We know already very well that, during the 20th century, the bandoneon survived and developed itself thanks to its exile to the River
Plate. The pioneers of the technical development of the bandoneon were the tango musicians Minotto Di Cicco, Marcucci and
Lipesker, Pedro Maffia, Pedro Laurenz and Marcos Madrigal. They not only influenced the way of approaching the instrument, but
also the definitive form of 142 bi-sonorous tones, that would be adopted for the bandoneon following on their exchanges with the
standard German manufacturers. Some time after came the “modern” pedagogues: Julio Ahumada,
Julio Pane, Alejandro Barletta, Rodolfo Mederos and Juan José Mosalini.
They modernized the repertoire and laid the foundations for the academic teaching of the instrument in Argentina and Europe.
Moving into this 21st century, the bandoneon pedagogy has expanded exponentially. Its geographical reach now extends with the
opening of official bandoneon classes to France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Lithuania, Germany, Finland, China and South
Korea. Two European women, great pedagogues, the Belgian bandoneonist Eva Wolff and the German Yvonne Hahn, developed
referential methods for approaching the instrument. The bandoneon, its teaching and its literature are nor longer limited to the River
Plate region neither to the Tango’ sound universe. Step by step, the bandoneon has begun to leave its tango roots following the path
to become an instrument suitable for all kinds of music and all cultures interested in its sound.
Coming just at the right time, Matías Gobbo's work adds modern teaching materials to the music of the bandoneon.
It is well known that it is necessary for a musician to develop a good taste for sound quality, beautiful melodies and rich harmonies.
However, it is often the case that technical exercises lack these last two qualities.
The “Estudios”, which Matías Gobbo modestly and austerely titles with just numbers (I would rather recommend each student or
teacher to name according to their own imagination or sensations), are in real: ‘minimal oeuvres ’. Many of them are brilliant short
compositions allowing the student to spend the time pleasantly while developing perception, taste, the quality of sound emission,
articulations, dynamics and the control of the bellows. All of these are essentials for a high-quality interpretative development, but
as a complement, of course, to the necessary technical studies, so that in this way the student will achieve the necessary autonomy

As a bandoneon teacher, I am always looking for new didactic materials, in order to approach a wide variety of works to my
students, both in terms of genre and style, as well as in terms of different levels of technical difficulty.
Until a few years ago we had, on the one hand, the classical methods, such as those of Marcucci-Lipesker, Caviello-Rey Mundo and
Pedro Maffia. With their strong technical imprint, they offered exercises similar to those of academic literature of other instruments
such as the piano. On the other hand, we had the arrangements of popular music, written by great bandoneon teachers at the end
of the 20th century. These arrangements, of great musical and didactic value, are still used in schools and institutions throughout
Argentina, and even in institutions around the world where the bandoneon is taught today.
Although the aforementioned materials are of an excellent level, I always welcome the appearance of new arrangements and
original compositions for this instrument. Even more so when said materials combine both technical practice and an aesthetic
search. Materials that, from the most simple to the most complex, are a pleasure to play.
The études in this book, written by Matías Gobbo, provide these qualities in a wonderful way. They are a great enrichment for the
musical library available to the bandoneon today. These études not only show a great understanding of the technical aspects that
the bandoneonist will approach when starting his or her journey with the instrument, but also offer a no less important feature: a
remarkable musical sensitivity. It is a pleasure playing these études, from the first to the last.
I congratulate Matías for his great work, for his tireless desire to produce new material of the highest level, and I am grateful for his
willingness to share it so generously with teachers and students all over the world. I am sure that bandoneonists who are just
beginning their journey with this beautiful instrument, will enjoy the music presented in these pages.

The bandoneon studies included in this volume were written with those who already
have a basic background in the practice of the instrument in mind.
Unlike Vol. 1, the compositions are not accompanied by graphics that indicate the
location of the notes for each studie, however, in the last part of the book students
will find the location of all the notes on the keyboards with a hyperlink so that they
can listen and see the location in real time.
The last studies of the present volume focus on the practice of articulations, which I
recommend to play carefully observing the notations for each case.
I hope this contribution will be useful for those who are interested in continuing to
learn and play the bandoneon.
