THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

During the summer of 2014, huge numbers of people filmed themselves pouring a bucket of ice-cold
water over their head, then nominated somebody else to do the same. Over 2.4 million people
posted videos on Facebook during July and August, and they went viral. Twenty-eight million people
uploaded, commented on or liked ice-bucket-related posts. So what was it all about? Was it just a bit
of fun?

Not exactly. They did it in order to raise money for charity and to increase awareness of ALS—
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (or MND — Motor Neurone Disease), which is the degenerative
disease that afflicts Professor Stephen Hawking. And in fact it was a huge success — it raised millions
and millions of pounds.
