In Spanish, there are two simple past tenses: the preterit and the imperfect. We will
start with the preterit, which expresses completed actions in the past.
Conjugation
In order to conjugate a verb in
the preterit, you must study a
-AR: trabajar
yo trabajé nosotros trabajamos
different set of verb endings.
tú trabajaste vosotros trabajasteis
él-ella-Ud. trabajó ellos/as-Uds. trabajaron
You must first remove the –
ar, -er, -ir ending from the
infinitive form. Then you are
left with the stem of the
-Er/-IR correr/vivir
verb, which is the same in all
yo corrí nosotros corrimos
verb forms. Next, you attach tú corriste vosotros corristeis
the –ar, -er/-ir verb endings él/ella-Ud. corrió ellos/as-Uds. corrieron
of the preterit depending of
the person that is performing
the action.
The preterit is used to:
1 Describe completed actions in the past.
Ella se levantó, desayunó, hizo la tarea She woke up, had breakfast, did her homework.
3. Bailamos merengue.
6. Estudiaste lingüística.
7. Levantaron pesas.
8. Nadé en el lago.
9. Trabajaron juntos.
