Arquitectura austera

Q uizá mañana seamos más, quienes alcancemos la virtuosa manera de vivir que
nos ofrece “la arquitectura austera” de los arquitectos franceses Anne Laca-
ton y Jean-Philippe Vassal, merecedores del premio Pritsker de Arquitectura este
año 2021. El objeto arquitectónico viejo, quizá en desuso se revalora para hacerse
presente en la vida de muchos que antes se imaginaban fuera de una habitabili-
dad con valores funcionales y estéticos arquitectónicos. “La buena arquitectura
es abierta, para mejorar la vida de cualquier persona” …donde el espacio es una
constante sugerencia de familiaridad, de utilidad y de belleza, aseverado por el
mismo Philippe. Los tres principios de Vitruvio: la Venustas (belleza), la Firmitas “Anne y Philippe en su quehacer arquitectónico, se ocupan por el rescate de edificaciones
(firmeza) y la Utilitas (utilidad). donde las preexistencias son su mejor materia prima.”
La realidad de hoy nos mueve a ver el mundo desde dentro,
siendo la vivienda el micro mundo de cada familia —cual-
quiera que sea, ahora su tipología—. Así Anne y Philippe
en su quehacer arquitectónico, se ocupan por el rescate de
edificaciones donde las preexistencias son su mejor materia
prima. De tal suerte, que tanto vivienda como instituciones
culturales y o académicas, espacios públicos y desarrollos
urbanos adquieren una vocación social, que atiende la res-
ponsabilidad de enriquecer la condición humana, beneficiar
el desarrollo de la ciudad y respetar las pautas que la natura-
leza exige silenciosa. El resultado demuestra un trabajo con
un amplio conocimiento de los principios de sostenibilidad
desde el espacio privado hasta el espacio público.
La arquitectura austera de esta dupla creativa de la arqui-
tectura ha beneficiado a muchas familias, a toda una comu-
nidad y por ende a una ciudad. Su trabajo es significativo
para la contribución de sociedades más sanas y sostenibles.
Los internacionales Anne Lacaton y Jean Philippe Vassal han
ocupado su experiencia y conocimiento para el desarrollo de
un tipo de arquitectura con un quehacer democrático que
va más allá de buscar una imperiosa forma estética para, en
cambio, encontrar en su arquitectura restauradora espacios
que atienden a la recepción estética del habitante.
Su visión de modernidad estética y funcional sostiene un
argumento que va más allá de la búsqueda de la belleza
arquitectónica o, incluso de la originalidad. Su discurso es
evidentemente una renovación de pensamiento decantado
hacia una filosofía ontológica, que busca la respuesta ónti-
ca-lógica del habitante y como resultado obtiene una verdad
ética arquitectónica; Una arquitectura que responde a los
fenómenos climáticos y ecológicos debilitados que derivan
en factores socio económicos de ciudad a gran escala.
Ante los ojos de estos arquitectos franceses, su creación ar-
quitectónica austera supone un fuerte compromiso con la
experiencia humana y con el respeto de la naturaleza y sus
órdenes. Por esto, es fácil estar de acuerdo con las palabras
del arquitecto Alejandro Aravena (presidente del premio
Pritsker 2021), “Lacaton y Vassal son radicales en su deli-
cadeza y audaces en su sutileza, equilibrando un enfoque
respetuoso pero directo del entorno construido”. El premio
Pritsker entregado a Anne y Philippe es un manifiesto de
la urgente necesidad de tomar este mensaje como una co-
rriente que debe preponderar hoy para las nuevas formas de
comprender el espacio y sus atmosferas; de comprender al
habitante alejado del derecho a la arquitectura para sus es-
pacios personales; de comprender las fenomenologías que
delinean las nuevas formas de habitar del siglo presente.
Anne Lacaton y Jean Philippe Vassal han sido evaluados por

editora y autora de arquitectura estadounidense, Directora
Ejecutiva del Premio Pritzker de Arquitectura que deja su
encargo a la Doctora en historia de la Arquitectura Manuela
Lucá-Dazio.
Austere architecture

P erhaps tomorrow there will be more of us who will achieve the virtuous way of
life offered by “austere architecture” by French architects Anne Lacaton and
Jean-Philippe Vassal, winners of the Pritsker Prize for Architecture this year 2021.
The old architectural object, perhaps disused it is revalued to be present in the
lives of many who previously imagined themselves outside of a habitability with
functional and architectural aesthetic values. “Good architecture is open, to im-
prove the life of any person” ... where space is a constant suggestion of familiarity,
utility and beauty, asserted by Philippe himself. The three principles of Vitruvius:
the Venustas (beauty), the Firmitas (firmness) and the Utilitas (usefulness). “The Pritsker Prize awarded to Anne and Philippe is a manifesto of the urgent
need to take this message as a current that must prevail today for new ways of
understanding space and its atmospheres”
Today’s reality moves us to see the world from within, hou-
sing being the micro-world of each family — whatever it
may be, now its typology. Thus Anne and Philippe in their
architectural work, are concerned with the rescue of buil-
dings where the preexistence is their best raw material. In
such a way, that both housing and cultural and or academic
institutions, public spaces and urban developments acquire
a social vocation, which attends to the responsibility of enri-
ching the human condition, benefiting the development of
the city and respecting the guidelines that nature demands
silently. The result shows a work with a wide knowledge of
the principles of sustainability from the private space to the
public space.
The austere architecture of this creative duo of architecture
has benefited many families, an entire community and the-
refore a city. Their work is significant for the contribution of
healthier and more sustainable societies. The internationals
Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal have used their expe-
rience and knowledge to develop a type of architecture with
a democratic task that goes beyond seeking an imperious
aesthetic form to, instead, find in its restorative architecture
spaces that serve the aesthetic reception of the inhabitant.
His vision of aesthetic and functional modernity supports
an argument that goes beyond the search for architectural
beauty or even originality. His speech is evidently a renewal
of thought decanted towards an ontological philosophy,
which seeks the ontic-logical response of the inhabitant and
as a result obtains an architectural ethical truth; An archi-
tecture that responds to the weakened climatic and ecolo-
gical phenomena that derive in socio-economic factors of a
large-scale city.
In the eyes of these French architects, their austere architec-
tural creation represents a strong commitment to human
experience and respect for nature and its orders. For this
reason, it is easy to agree with the words of the architect
Alejandro Aravena (president of the Pritsker Prize 2021),
“Lacaton and Vassal are radical in their delicacy and bold in
their subtlety, balancing a respectful but direct approach to
the built environment.” The Pritsker Prize awarded to Anne
and Philippe is a manifesto of the urgent need to take this
message as a current that must prevail today for new ways
of understanding space and its atmospheres; to understand
the inhabitant away from the right to architecture for their
personal spaces; to understand the phenomenologies that
delineate the new ways of living in the present century.
Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal have been evaluated
by the renowned architects: Alejandro Aravena, President,
Deborah Berke, Stephen Breyer, Barry Bergdoll, André
Aranha Corrêa do Lago, Wang Shu, Kazuyo Sejima, Benede-
tta Tagliabue and Martha Thorne, academic, curator, editor
and author of American architecture, Executive Director of
the Pritzker Architecture Prize who leaves her commission
to Manuela Lucá-Dazio, PhD in History of Architecture.
