8 • LAS FACULTADES
Author’s note.
The Faculties was born as a procedure of grafting. Onto the
organism of a Puerto Rican family, different kinds of tissues were
transplanted: sexual, religious, political, techno-virtual, criminal.
Some even from different species: xenotransplants. There was
no rejection. The bodies (PACO, MAGDA, BRIAN KEVIN, la
NENA, el ABUELO, SERVER) thus emerged as bodies without
resistance, completely permeable to the past, the future; to the
terrestrial and the celestial; to the concrete and the illusory. An
immunosuppressed condition analogous to that of neonates:
between life and death, liquid, participant of life and death.
Antonin Artaud comes to mind, writing in 1933 about theatre
and the plague: the plague which kills the individual while leaving
the organs intact; the theatre destroying the organs without killing
the organism. Both, plague and theatre, carrying, nevertheless a
case of exception, of crisis: “Under such a scourge, all social
forms disintegrate.”1 Now, the case has become quotidian: the
disease is normative, or more accurately, disease and norm have
abdicated in favor of other systems, interactive, counter-radical
(meaning counter-cataclysmic), conductive. We have gone from
an Artaudian metapathology to an immunology of daily living.
In 2008, for instance, the media spreads the story of Demi-Lee
Brennan, an Australian girl who, after undergoing liver transplant,
