EL PASADO SIMPLE
Es el tiempo verbal que se usa para hablar de acciones completas que ocurrieron en el
pasado.
Ejemplos:
I worked in London last summer.
She didn’t eat meat for years.
Did you play football as a child?
Con este tiempo verbal, es frecuente el uso de adverbios de tiempo y de expresiones temporales para
indicar el pasado:
an hour/month/year ago
last night/weekend/month/spring/year
yesterday
in 2010
De acuerdo con la forma que toma el pasado de los verbos en inglés, se clasifican en:
Verbos regulares: son aquellos verbos que siguen las reglas para la formación del pasado.
Verbos irregulares: la forma en pasado de estos verbos no sigue ninguna regla. Existe una extensa lista de
verbos irregulares en inglés.

Oraciones afirmativas
La estructura para formar oraciones afirmativas en pasado simple con el verbo to be es la siguiente:
Ejemplos:
I was in Rome last week.
Robert was an outstanding student.
My grandparents were painters.
La estructura para formar oraciones afirmativas en pasado simple con el pronombre there es la siguiente:

Ejemplos:
There was a huge playground in my primary school.
There were lots of kids in my neighbourhood.
Oraciones negativas
Para formar oraciones negativas en pasado simple con el verbo to be, agregamos el adverbio de negación
después del verbo en pasado:
Ejemplos:
I was not / wasn’t in Rome last week.
Robert was not / wasn’t an outstanding student.
My grandparents were not / weren’t painters.
La estructura para formar oraciones negativas en pasado simple con pronombre there es la siguiente:
Ejemplos:
There was not / wasn’t a huge playground in my primary school.
There were not / weren’t lots of kids in my neighbourhood.
Oraciones interrogativas
Las oraciones interrogativas en pasado simple con el verbo to be se forman de la siguiente manera:

Was he an outstanding student?
Were your grandparents painters?
La estructura para formar oraciones interrogativas en pasado simple con pronombre there es la siguiente:
Ejemplos:
Was there a huge playground in your primary school?
Were there lots of kids in your neighbourhood?
Oraciones afirmativas
La estructura para formar oraciones afirmativas en pasado simple con todos los demás verbos es la siguiente:
Ejemplos:
I studied English at Cambridge University.
My parents went to the bank early this morning.
She did her homework very fast.
Oraciones negativas
Para formar oraciones negativas en pasado simple con todos los verbos (excepto con el verbo to be)usamos el
verbo principal en infinitivo y el auxiliar do en su forma en pasado did¸ añadiendo el adverbio de negación:

Oraciones interrogativas
Para formar oraciones interrogativas en pasado simple con todos los verbos (excepto con el verbo to
be)tambiénusamos el verbo auxiliar do en su forma en pasado did y el verbo principal en infinitivo:
Ejemplos:
Did you study English at Cambridge University?
Did your parents go to the bank early this morning?
Did she do her homework very fast?
Ejemplos:
I finished the final exam just on time.
The sales manager did not mention the CEO’s negative report.
Did you stay at home last Saturday?
Ejemplos:
I always travelled to Brazil for vacation when I was young.
My sister didn’t eat meat for years.
My father worked ten years as a teacher.

EL PASADO CONTINUO
Este tiempo verbal se usa para referirnos a aquellas acciones que transcurrieron en un
momento determinado del pasado
Ejemplos:
She was reading in her room this evening.
He was not watching TV last night.
Were you studying for the exam during the weekend?
Oraciones afirmativas
La estructura para formar oraciones afirmativas en pasado continuo incluye el uso del auxiliar to be:
Ejemplos:
We were working on a new project this Monday.
I was writing an essay on the ancient Romans.
She was taking a shower last night when I phoned.
Oraciones negativas
Para formar oraciones negativas en pasado continuo, también usamos el pasado del verbo auxiliar to be:

Oraciones interrogativas
Las oraciones interrogativas en pasado continuo también se forman con el verbo auxiliar to be en pasado:
Ejemplos:
Were you watching the news last night?
Was your child studying hard enough for the exam?
Was the printer working yesterday?
Para hablar de acciones que estaban transcurriendo en un momento específico del pasado.
Ejemplos:
My sister was talking on the phone for two hours yesterday.
The management board was studying the sales report the whole week.
Were you reading in bed last night?
Ejemplos:
The teacher was explaining the new lesson but nobody was paying attention.
My parents were having dinner while my sister was listening to the radio in her room.
Everybody was talking loudly while I was trying to study for the exam.
