1.1- Greetings and farewells

Greeting and farewells are very important when learning English. Depending on the
context you can use formal or informal expressions, so context is crucial. The time of the day
is also relevant; you don’t greet the same way in morning or at night.

Depending on the time we can use different alternatives.

Morning Greetings

Formal Informal
 Good Morning  Morning
 Hi
 Hello

 Examples:

Picture 1
At the Office
Boss : Good moring Santis
Santis : Good Morning Mr. Alvarez

Afternoon greetings (after 12:00 p.m.)

We never say good night to greet, good night means bye bye at night.

Farewells are also important and we can use different forms in different situations. Let’s see
some examples.

Formal Informal

 Goodbye  Bye

 See you soon  Bye-bye

 See you tomorrow  See you

 Good night  See you later./tomorrow./on

1.4 Introducing yourself and others

People introduce themselves for different reasons: for business, for school
situations, parties, when making new friends, etc. For that reason, we have
different ways to do it.

Let’s have a look at some examples:

Formal introductions

A: Mr. Pitt, this is Professor Kerr.

B: Professor Kerr. I'm pleased to meet you.

A: Mr. Pitt, may I present Professor Kerr.

B: How do you do?

Pic. 9

Formal language is used in formal situations for example funerals, meetings

with important people, business meetings, job interviews, etc.

General/Neutral introductions

Informal introductions

A: John, meet Julia

B: How are you, Julia? Informal introductions are
for people we meet at parties,
A: John, this is Julia. or when we are with friends.
B: Hi, Julia.

You can also introduce yourself to people you don’t know depending on the situation:
For example:

 “I am Police Officer Perez, and I am arresting you for…”

 “I’m a Peter Rosenberg, your pilot on this flight…”
 “Hi, I’m Natalie, your English teacher…”

Pic. 10

"How do you do” = “Pleased to meet you"

Very formal - Formal

“How do you do” has nothing to do with

 Let’s read the book.

(In this case we are talking about a specific book: the blue book right here.)

Clothes

Clothing is something we all should wear in order to fit in to society. The act of
wearing clothing is a choice in some indigenous societies while in a more modern culture
you could find yourself in trouble with the police if you choose not to wear clothes.
Clothes are easily accessible and can be bought in most high street shops. Supermarkets
are also beginning to sell clothes. Clothes are for keeping people warm or serving as
protection from the strong burning sun. Certain items of clothing can be expensive,
especially if it is made by a well-known brand or is a particular design. While clothing is
affordable for most people, the price usually depends on the quality of the material used
to make the item and its brand name. In most countries clothing is taxed, while food is
not. This is probably because clothing can be considered as a luxury item, especially if it
is of very good quality.

The type of clothing that is worn usually depends on the occasion. People that
attend a wedding usually wear formal clothes. Men often wear suits and women wear
dresses. Formal and smart clothing is often worn in times of celebration. People often
wear different clothing at work. Some jobs require people to wear a special uniform
which should be worn by all employees. A pilot, doctor or air hostess may be required to
wear a uniform so that all the staff can be easily recognized. Other jobs are less strict
and may allow people to wear casual clothes. Construction workers are usually asked to
wear protective clothing, especially when the site is considered highly dangerous.

People often choose to wear comfortable clothing inside their own home. This
choice of clothing may be very different to the clothing they would normally wear
outside. Some people even stay in their bedclothes all day on the weekend when they plan
to relax and not go anywhere. People often wear clothing which matches their current
state of health or their age. Pregnant women are likely to wear baggy clothes, while
youths often wear tighter clothing to show their figure. Younger females often wear high
heeled shoes while elderly people tend to wear more comfortable shoes which will allow
them to walk with ease.

5.2 Getting around

When we want to describe the way we get from one place to another,
we have different useful verbs that can help us:

E.g. I TAKE the subway every morning.

Oscar TAKES the train to Rancagua.

We TAKE the plane early when we go to Arica.

 DRIVE

E.g. I DRIVE my car to work.

They DRIVE a van on vacation.

5.3 Talking about how we move around

The Simple Present tense is the grammatical structure used to describe daily
routines. Its basic arrangement is like this:

 AFFIRMATIVE

I get up at 6:30am every day.

We have breakfast very early on Saturdays.

subject + verb + complement

We add “s” on the verbs when the subject is it, she or he.
Special cases
 She takes the subway.
Have - Has
 Amanda reads the newspaper.
Do - Does
 It snows a lot in Boston. Go - Goes

Picture 99

Cuaderno de Apuntes de uso exclusivo de los estudiantes del Instituto Profesional AIEP. Prohibida su reproducción. Derechos reservados AIEP. 59
Vicerrectoría Académica
Cuaderno de Apuntes

 NEGATIVE

I DON’T have breakfast on weekends.

We DON’T take the subway to go to class.

Subject + DO / DOES NOT + verb + complement

As you can see, the negative form is formed by DO or DOES + NOT. In the case of
DOES, it is used when the subject is HE - SHE – IT (third person singular) and the verb
doesn’t have the “s” of the affirmative form.

 She DOESN’T drink coffee.

 Joey DOESN’T have lunch at the office.

 It DOESN’T rain much in Calama.

Picture 100

 INTERROGATIVE

DO you go running on weekends?

DOES Kelly leep late on Saturdays?

DO / DOES + subject + verb + complement

The short answer would be:

 Yes, I DO (go running on weekends) / No, I DON’T (go running on weekends).

 Yes, she DOES (sleep late on Saturdays) / No, she DOESN’T (sleep late on
Saturdays).

Cuaderno de Apuntes de uso exclusivo de los estudiantes del Instituto Profesional AIEP. Prohibida su reproducción. Derechos reservados AIEP. 60
Vicerrectoría Académica
Cuaderno de Apuntes

As you can see, questions start with the auxiliary DO or DOES, depending on your subject.
Following previous rules, HE – SHE – IT take the form DOES. In this case the verb doesn’t
have the “s” of the affirmative form.

DOES Paula likeS chocolates? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.

DOES Simon workS at the hospital? Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.

5.4 Time

WHY BE ON TIME?

Being on time:

 Demonstrates that you are diligent and dependable.

 Indicates that you honor your obligations.
 Shows that you have respect for other people and that you care about their
time.
 Sets a good example for your children and others.
 Builds self-confidence and success.

One of the common attributes of all successful people is that they view their time
as a precious resource. When you are late for appointments with people who value their
time, you waste one of their most valuable assets and there is a good chance they will
view you as rude, irresponsible and disrespectful. Is this how you want to show yourself?

Not only should you make every effort to be on time for business-related appointments,
but also to be on time for personal commitments. Valuing your friend’s time and earning
their respect is an important part of your individual reputation.

6.1 Present situations

Let’s go back a little and remember questions using the simple present. Look at the
examples and then do the exercises below.

 Do you have a car?

 Does Andres go to football matches?

 Do they know me?

 Do we have a test?

 Does it bite? I mean, the dog?

 Does Alejandra work in a clinic?

 Does Maite like Pepa Pig? Picture 110

These kinds of questions are called closed questions, because there are only two possible
answers: “yes” or “no”.

 Examples

Do you like The Beatles? Does Maria study English?

Yes, I do. Yes, she does.

Do you like Ricky Martin? Does Maria work in Santiago?

No, I don’t. No, she doesn’t.

6.2 Opened and closed questions

Now that we remember what closed questions are, let’s take a look at
opened questions.
To ask about specific information about routines, we use WH-
questions (like what, when, where, etc.) Here you have some examples:

WH- USE EXAMPLE

WHAT Asking about an object (concrete or abstract). What is your name?

WHEN Asking about general time or moment. When do you have English class?

WHERE Asking about a place or position. Where do they live?

Which color do you want? It can be blue, red or
WHICH Asking about choice among different options.

MY DAILY ROUTINE

My name's Julia, and I am 27 years old. I live in London but I’m German. I live with
my boyfriend and we are very happy. I work in a bank and I love my job.

From Monday to Friday, my day starts very early. I always get up at 6:30 and I have
a 20-minute shower. Then, I get dressed and comb my hair. At 07:00 a.m I have breakfast,
I usually have coffee and cereal. After that, I put on my make up and go to work.

At 10:00 a.m., I sometimes have a snack and at 12:00 I usually have lunch at the
office with my colleagues. They are wonderful people who have a good sense of humor, and
they are good friends too. At 3:30 I have a snack again, I usually have some tea and
biscuits.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I go to the gym after work. When I get home,
I have a shower again, I prepare dinner and I watch TV for a while. I like to go to bed as
soon as possible, around 9:30.

Thursday is different because I don't go to the gym. I go out with my boyfriend

every Thursday. We sometimes go to the cinema or we go out for dinner and to have a
drink.

My boyfriend's name is Daniel, he is 31 years old, and he's an architect. He likes

cooking but he doesn't like cleaning the house so we share the housework.

His family is from Spain. He has two brothers and no sisters. We have been a couple
for six years. And we have been living together for two years.

On Friday night I always go out with my friends, we sometimes go to a bar and

sometimes we meet at a friend’s house but I can't be home late because I have to get up
early on Saturday to clean the house.

At the weekend, I always visit my parents and I often visit my grandparents, too.

7.1 Going shopping!

We can use cardinal numbers to count things but also we can use them to
say the prices of things.
To ask for prices first of all we need to get familiar with the questions
How much.
Examples

 How much does this guitar cost?

 How much is this guitar?

As you can see we have two forms of asking, you can use any of
them.

 How much are those computers?

 How much is that computer? Depending if the element is
singular or plural you have to use
 How much do those computers cost? do or does and is or are
 How much does that computer cost?

Answers also vary. Take a look at the examples.

 How much are those pants?

They are $10.999.- (Ten thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine pesos)

 How much is that shirt?

It’s $15.000.- (Fifteen thousand pesos)

Notice that when the element is singular (shirt) we use IT is and when it’s plural (pants)
we use THEY.

Going shopping

Mrs Smith is going shopping with her son. They are looking for a present for Mr
Smith's birthday. Mrs Smith wants to buy him a new camera and Tom wants to buy him a
jumper.
They drive to the department store on the high street. Mrs Smith uses the
escalator to go to the Electrical Department on the third floor and Tom takes the stairs
up to the Men's Clothing Department on the first floor.
When she gets to the Electrical Department she finds that cameras are sold in
the Photography Department on the ground floor. She takes the elevator down and asks
the sales assistant there for some help. She doesn't know much about cameras and needs
some advice. He recommends an automatic camera by Olympus, but it is too expensive.
She asks him if he has anything a little cheaper and he tells her about a special offer on
the Pentax range. It still seems expensive so she thanks the assistant and decides to shop
around first.
Meanwhile, Tom is looking at the jumpers. He only has £10 to spend so he can't
afford most of them. He sees his mother and they decide to go to the smaller shops

8.2 Describing jobs

Every job is different and people are different, too. So we can have
different opinions about our or other people’s jobs, according to our experience
or what we have heard from them.

A job can be:

 BORING A boring job is not fun. Maybe you can even fall asleep!

 EXITING An exciting job can be pure adrenaline.

 EASY An easy job is a piece of cake! It doesn’t take you much to learn how

to do things.

 DANGEROUS A dangerous job can kill you or put you in risk.

 SAFE A safe job doesn’t mean any danger to the people who do it.

 STRESSFUL A stressful job can make you sick. You always have too many things to

do and it drives you nuts!

Can you think of other adjectives that can help us describe jobs?

1._________________________ 3.__________________________

2. _________________________ 4. __________________________

You can describe jobs in two different ways: using HAVE or using TO BE.

3 Interesting and weird Jobs

Are you looking for a job? Here there is a list with some suggestions!

1. Chocolate consultant

This is the ultimate job for anyone with cravings for chocolate – and yes, jobs like
this really exist. There are lots of different types of chocolate consultants, who work
tasting new mixtures and creating different recipes or finding particular types of chocolate.

2. Professional Sleeper

Typically, professional sleepers participate in university studies on sleep or dreams,

but others make sure beds are comfortable. In 2009 during an art show at The New Museum
of Contemporary Art, women were paid to sleep as part of a “living art” exhibition. So if you
like sleeping, this is the perfect job for you!

3. Island Caretaker

This job was advertised as “Officially the best job in the world” in 2009 and involved
working for the Queensland Tourism Board. Ben Southall won the job, earning £73,400 to
live on an island in the Great Barrier Reef for six months, swimming, exploring and generally
enjoying himself while filming and blogging about all the fun he was having.

8.3 Workplace

People work in different work places depending on the activity they do. Let’s see
some of them.

 Fire Station: where firemen train and work. They are always ready in case of a fire.

 Police Station: where police officers work and prepare to protect the streets.

 Space Center: where astronauts train and prepare to go out of space.

 Hospital: where doctors work and save lives.

 Tribunal/ Court: where lawyers work defending people.

 School: where teacher teach students.

 Restaurant: where cooks and chefs work preparing delicious food.

 Veterinary Clinic: where veterinarians help sick animals.

Picture 129
 Office: where people like architects work in their space.

 Beauty center: where hairstylists can work with people’s hair in different styles.

 Construction site: where workers are building houses, apartments, etc.

Don’t forget that to know about the place where someone works, we use the
Simple Present tense:

 Where do you work?

I work in a hospital.

 What does Felipe work?

He works in a restaurant, he’s a chef.

jobs, it’s time to mix things.
As you know, Simple Present is used for describing routines so now
you will have to describe the routines of some jobs. Pick 4 different jobs
and write a short description of the routine of that person and then read
it to your partner to see if they can guess what the job is.
E.g. A teacher works in a school. He/she teaches and evaluates
his/her students.

9.3 Putting ideas together

We can use conjunctions to connect two different ideas in a sentence. The

conjunctions we will see now are AND, OR & BUT:

AND connects two ideas that are similar; it means more, addition.

Examples:

 I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

 She’s wearing a dress and high heels.

 It’s cold and it’s raining.

BUT connects two opposite ideas, it means contrast or contradiction.

Example:

 It’s raining but I’m not wearing a raincoat.

 I am calling Sharon, but she is not answering.

 He’s Chilean but he lives in the U.S.

Picture 141

OR is used to give options in a phrase.

Examples:

 You can go to the park or the stadium.

 Do you prefer pizza or lasagna?

 I don’t know if the shirt is green or blue.

What is the internet?

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the
standard Internet protocol suite, a set of communications protocols, to serve billions of
users worldwide. The internet has reshaped and redefined most traditional
communications media including telephone, music, film, and television. This has givgaveen
birth to new services. Newspaper, book and other print publishing are adapting to Web
site technology, or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds.

The Internet enabled or accelerated new forms of human interactions through

instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed
both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and
financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire industries.

The origins of the Internet reach back to research of the 1960s, commissioned by
the United States government in collaboration with private commercial interests to build
robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks. The commercialization of what
was by the 1990s an international network resulted in its popularization and incorporation
into virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2011, more than 2.1 billion people
— nearly a third of Earth's population — use the services of the Internet
