1.- THE CITY

SÍNTESIS HISTÓRICA

Ronda se sitúa en la zona más noroccidental de la provincia de Málaga, en una cuenca rodeada de
montañas de gran continuidad y mediana altitud, confiriéndole un carácter inaccesible que, junto a sus
características climáticas, hidrológicas y de suelo, la han determinado a lo largo de su historia.

Ronda, una de las ciudades más antiguas de España, Ronda tiene sus orígenes en la Prehistoria,
destacando entre sus restos más importantes la Cueva de la Pileta, verdadera reliquia del arte rupestre andaluz,
así como los numerosos conjuntos de monumentos megalíticos, entre los que destacan el Dolmen del Chopo.

De época romana son numerosos los vestigios dispersos por la Comarca, aunque sobresale, de entre
todos, el yacimiento arqueológico de la ciudad romana de Acinipo.

No obstante, es el legado cultural árabe el más perceptible en Ronda y su territorio. La Ronda musulmana
alcanzó gran importancia siendo capital de una de las cinco Coras de al-Andalus. Su cultura quedará
impregnada a lo largo del tiempo en nuestro urbanismo, gastronomía, tradiciones, sistemas de cultivo, etc...

Será con la conquista de la ciudad (1485) por los Reyes Católicos, cuando se produzca una nueva
reorganización cultural, y de la fisonomía de la ciudad, aunque será en el siglo XVIII el que remarque
definitivamente el papel de la ciudad en el contexto de Andalucía. Es en esta época cuando se construyen los
monumentos más significativos y emblemáticos de Ronda: el Puente Nuevo y construcciones emblemáticas como
la Plaza de Toros.

La imagen romántica de la ciudad se forja, sin duda, durante el siglo XIX, con el bandolerismo y la
tauromaquia causando una profunda impresión en muchos insignes viajeros. Ambos aspectos se han convertido
desde entonces en símbolos de nuestra cultura y tradición. No obstante, la riqueza cultural y tradicional de Ronda
es mucho más amplia y diversa que estos agradables tópicos, y es en esa diversidad en la que se basa el
atractivo actual de Ronda.

HISTORICAL SUMMARY

Situated in the far north west of the province of Malaga, Ronda sits on an outcrop of rock in a basin
surrounded by mountain ranges, the height and length of which make access to the town difficult. This fact,
together with the climate, hydrology and geology of the area, has left an indelible stamp on its history.

One of the oldest towns in Spain, Ronda has its origins in prehistory. The Cave of the Pileta, a true relic of
Andalusian stone age art, is one of the most significant remains of this period together with various groups of
megalithic monuments such as the Dolmen of the Chopo (Poplar).

Scattered around the province one finds various remains from the Roman period, the most important being
the archaeological site of the Roman town of Acinipo.

Nevertheless, the most striking aspect of the cultural heritage of Ronda and its surroundings is Arabic. Under
Muslim rule the town rose to importance as the capital of one of the five Coras of al-Andalus. This influence has
impregnated the style of building, the gastronomy, agricultural practices and many other traditions in the region.

The conquest of the town by the Catholic Kings in 1485 was followed by a period of cultural and structural
reorganisation, but not until the 18th century did the role of the town become clear in the general context of
Andalusia. It was during this period that Ronda’s most significant and emblematic monuments were built, the New
Bridge and the Bullring.

The romantic image of the town was forged, without doubt, during the 19th century with banditry and
bullfighting making a strong impression on the minds of distinguished travellers. These two aspects have since
become symbolic of the culture and traditions of the area, nevertheless, Ronda has a wealth of culture and
tradition which goes beyond this over simplified image and it is this diversity on which the present day attraction of
the town and the Serranía is based.

“SIERRA DE LAS NIEVES” NATURAL PARK

Con una superficie de 18.592 Ha., fue declarado Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO. Abarca parte de los términos
municipales de Istan, Monda, Parauta, Ronda, Tolox y Yunquera. Montañas de abruptos relieves, simas, cuevas y
profundos barrancos se suceden en este parque. La sima GESM, está considerada como la tercera del mundo por su
profundidad, más de 1.100 metros.
En el recorrido a pie se contemplarán: quejigos, tejos, arces, fresnos, encinas, castaños, pinos y, sobre todo, un
bosque de Pinsapos (una especie de abeto en estado arcaico que sólo permanece en esta Serranía y en el norte de
Marruecos). Entre la variada fauna destacar animales como: el águila real, la cabra montés, la nutria, la salamandra,
el lagarto, la víbora, etc.

This park, declared Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO, has an area of 18,592 hectares. Taking in the municipal
areas of Istan, Monda, Parauta, Ronda, Tolox and Yunquera.Craggy mountains, chasms, caves and sheer ravines are
the dominant features of this park. The GESM abyss is over 1.100 metres deep and is considered to be the third
deepest in the world. It is the natural sanctuary of the “Pinsapo” or Spanish Fir. Here we find a forest of this tree found
only in this Serrania and Morroco. Other trees found are Gall Oaks, yew trees, maples, ash trees, Holm Oaks, Chestnuts
and Pines. Animals that can be seen include Mountain Goats, golden eagle, otter, salamander, lizard, viper etc.

Declarado Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO en 1977. Se extiende a lo largo de una superficie de 51.695 Ha. El
pinsapo representa la especie emblemática del parque. La naturaleza caliza del terreno y el excepcional régimen
pluviométrico (2000 l/m2 año), han originado un paisaje kárstico con grandes escarpes y grutas, como el complejo
espeleológico de Hundidero-Gato.Así mismo destacar la diversidad de la fauna representada en especies como: el
buitre leonado, la cabra montés, el corzo, el ciervo,... y gran riqueza de aves rapaces e insectivoras en general.

Situado entre las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga. Ocupa una superficie de 170.025 Ha. En él tenemos el mayor
alcornocal de la Península que junto a especies vegetales reliquias del pasado (acebo, rododendro, etc.) le
proporciona un valor botánico y paisajístico incomparable. Destacan especies cinegéticas como el ciervo y el corzo,
así como actividades económicas tradicionales y arquitectura popular, únicas en estos territorios.

Situated between Cadiz and Malaga Provinces. Here we find the largest wood of Cork Oaks in the Iberian
Peninsula, together with plants that are relics of the past (holly tree, rhododendron etc.). Here we find game in the
form of deer and roebuck plus traditional economic activities and popular architecture.
