1. A thin 20-cmx20-cm flat plate in pulled at 1m/s horizontally through a 3.6-mm-thick oil layer
sandwiched between two plates, one stationary and the other moving at a constant velocity
of 0.3 m/s, as shown in figure below. The dynamic viscosity of oil is 0.027 Pa*s. Assuming
the velocity in each oil layer to vary linearly, (a) plot the velocity profile and find the location
where the oil velocity is zero and (b) determine the force that needs to be applied on the
plate to maintain this motion. [ F = 1.62 N]
[F = 122.366 lb]

14. (a) Find the horizontal and vertical forces per foot of width acting on the Tainter gate shown
in the figure below. (b) Locate the horizontal force and indicate the line of action of the
vertical force without actually computing its location. (c) Locate the vertical force (hint:
consider the resultant). [Fx = 10108.8 lb/ft; Fy = 1831 lb/ft; b) 12 ft; c) 16.56 ft]
6.728 ft]
17. A solid block, 4 in wide by 4 in deep and 3 in high weighs 0.90 lb. It floats in liquid (γ=55lb/ft3)
inside a cubic container of side 5 in. Before immersion the liquid was 2 in deep. (a) At what
level will the block float? Find the distance z from the bottom of the block to the bottom of
the container. (b) If the block is tilted by a couple (no net force) to an angle of 15ᵒ so that
two sides remain vertical, what will be the righting moment in lb*in? [z = 1.363 in; 0.0385
lb*in]
