Places and languages
There are over one hundred and ninety countries in the world and about seven
thousand languages. Over one billion speakers in China speak Mandarin Chinese,
so Chinese is in first place compared to other languages. The language of Hindi, in
India, is in second place. And Spanish is in third place. Spain isn´t a big country, but
there are over four hundred and seventy million Spanish speakersin different
countries aroundthe world. Four hundred and eighteen million speakers live in
Latin America. They all speak Spanish as their first language.
As a first language, English is in fourth place. About three hundred and eighty
million people are native English speakers. But English is a second language for
over one billion other people, the news or studying science and medicine. In some
countries, English is not the native language, but it is the oficial language for the
government. It is also the language of education in many universities and schools.
About eighty per cent of the world´s population speak the big four languages, and
the other twenty per cent speak 6,996 languages between them. And many
countries use lots of different languages. For example, on the islands of vanuatu in
the South Pacific Ocean there are sixty - five different islands and they have one
hundred and nine different languages. That´s one point five languages for every
island.
Unfortunately, the world loses a language every two weeks. This is because lots of
younger people only speak one of the big four languages and they don´t learn the
languages of their parents and grandparents. For Example, Charlie Muldunga lies
in Australia and he speaks English because it is the first language of the country,
but his native language is Amurdag. Charlie is the last speaker of this language and
when he dies, the language dies.
Lugares e idiomas
Hay más de ciento noventa países en el mundo y cerca de siete mil idiomas. Más
de mil millones de hablantes en chino hablan chino mandarín, por lo que el chino
ocupa el primer lugar en comparación con otros idiomas. El idioma del hindi, en la
India, ocupa el segundo lugar. Y el español está en tercer lugar. España no es un
país grande, pero hay más de cuatrocientos setenta millones de hablantes de
español en diferentes países alrededor del mundo. Cuatrocientos dieciocho
millones de hablantes viven en América Latina. Todos hablan español como primer
idioma.
Como primer idioma, el inglés está en el cuarto lugar. Cerca de trescientos ochenta
millones de personas son hablantes nativos de inglés. Pero el inglés es un segundo
idioma para más de mil millones de personas, noticias o estudios de ciencias y
medicina. En algunos países, el inglés no es el idioma nativo, pero es el idioma
oficial del gobierno. También es el idioma de la educación en muchas universidades
y escuelas.
Alrededor del ochenta por ciento de la población mundial habla los cuatro grandes
idiomas, y el otro veinte por ciento habla 6.996 idiomas entre ellos. Y muchos
países usan muchos idiomas diferentes. Por ejemplo, en las islas de vanuatu en el
Océano Pacífico Sur hay sesenta y cinco islas diferentes y tienen ciento nueve
idiomas diferentes. Eso es un punto cinco idiomas para cada isla.
Desafortunadamente, el mundo pierde un idioma cada dos semanas. Esto se debe
a que muchas personas más jóvenes solo hablan uno de los cuatro idiomas
principales y no aprenden los idiomas de sus padres y abuelos. Por ejemplo, Charlie
Muldunga se encuentra en Australia y habla inglés porque es el primer idioma del
país, pero su idioma nativo es Amurdag. Charlie es el último hablante de este
