“There are five basic methods for developing a more powerful vocabulary. The first method is to
memorize words using sight recognition by marking vocabulary cards for words you want to learn. A
second method is to learn phonetics so that you can sound out words you can’t recognize when
your hear them. Another method is to learn words by their use in context as you read. A fourth
method is to learn word structure, such as the meanings of roots, prefixes, and suffixes. If none of
these methods works, you can turn to a dictionary for word study”.
