Verbos + infinitivo sin to: Did you hear her come in?
El verbo to hear tambin puede ir seguido de infinitivo y de gerundio. Igual que en castellano, a veces queda
ms natural decir: Did you hear her come in? (La oste entrar?), y otras veces: I could hear the little birds
singing (Oa cantar a los pajarillos).

Nadie te hizo firmar, no?
Nuestro profesor nos haca ponernos de pie en el rincn
si suspendamos.
Quin podr hacer que se vayan los malos espritus?
Te harn esperar fuera si llegas tarde.
Es esa la historia que hace rer a la gente cada vez?
Nobody made you sign, did they?
Our teacher used to make us stand in the corner if we
failed.
Wholl be able to make the evil spirits go away?
Theyll make you wait outside if youre late.
Is that the story that makes people laugh every time?

La construccin con to listen sera similar: I like to listen to them sing/singing. Aqu el to despus
de listen equivale a la preposicin a, as que no tiene nada que ver con el infinitivo.

Verbos + infinitivo sin to: Just watching the rain fall

Sigamos practicando esta estructura, ahora con el verbo to watch. Muy parecido a to see, pero con el
sentido de mirar u observar.

Qu divertido es verte jugar al ajedrez!
Alguna vez has visto como se seca la pintura?
Podras echarme una mano en vez de mirar como
trabajo?
Si me dejas ver como lo haces ahora, podr hacerlo solo
despus.
Vas a quedarte ah a ver como me como todas las
ostras?
Its so much fun to watch you play chess!
Have you ever watched paint dry?
Could you give me a hand instead of watching me
work?
If you let me watch you do it now, Ill be able do it on
my own later.
Are you going to stand there and watch me eat all the

Podemos decir: Ill watch/see that film tomorrow, y I watched/saw that film yesterday. Pero slo
valdra: Im watching it now.

Verbos + infinitivo sin to: Let me go!

Jams decimos el infinitivo con to despus de to let. El problema es que se confunde con to allow, que s
que va seguido de to.

Me dejars quedarme (por aqu) si estoy callado? Will you let me stick around if Im quiet?
No dejes que nadie nunca te diga lo contrario. Dont ever let anyone tell you the opposite.
Que haya luz! Let there be light!
Djalo estar, djalo estaaar... Let it be, let it beeee...
Que coman tarta! Let them eat cake!

En construcciones con there + to be, tambin hay que eliminar el to.

Verbos + infinitivo sin to: Can you help me finish?

Seguramente por razones de esttica y comodidad, normalmente se omite el to del infinitivo despus del
verbo to help. Es opcional y slo cambia la forma, no el significado de la frase.

l necesita algo que le ayude a seguir con su vida. He needs something to help him get on with his life.

Ojal (yo) pudiera ayudarte a ver cmo es ella en reali-

Debe de haberles ayudado alguien a solucionarlo. Someone mustve helped them sort it out.

Conocas la expresion con true colours? La usamos para hablar de la verdadera naturaleza o las
verdaderas intenciones de alguien.

Hay otros verbos y expresiones que van seguidos de infinitivo sin to. Aqu vers una muestra de algunos de
los ms destacados. Para que se te queden bien grabados, ayudara que te inventaras mnimo 20 ejemplos
con cada uno.

(Yo) preferira gastar mi dinero en otra cosa.
Ms vale que no te equivoques sobre ella.
Puedes sentir su corazn latir?
Ella podra ser la definitiva!
Tendremos que aparnoslas con lo que tenemos.
Id rather spend my money on something else.
Youd better not be wrong about her.
Can you feel its heart beat?
She could be the one!
Well have to make do with what weve got.

Rather ir seguido de un tiempo en pasado si el sujeto de la frase siguiente cambia: Id rather you
didnt wake me up if I fall asleep on the couch.

Verbos + infinitivo sin to: modal verbs

Y acabamos con un minirrepaso de los verbos modales que, llueva, nieve o granice, jams pueden ir
acompaados de to ni antes, ni despus. Que luego salen cosas raras como must to o to can, y a tu
profesor le da un infarto.

Debo arreglar mi habitacin antes de irme de vacaciones. I must tidy up my room before going on holiday.
Aunque puede que sea una sorpresa para algunos, todos Although it might come as a surprise for some, you all

Puede que haya alguien en la puerta. There may be somebody at the door.
Todo el mundo debera beber dos litros de agua al da? Should everyone have two liters of water per day?
Eso slo puede pasar si la gente no tiene cuidado. That can only happen if people arent careful.

Si consideramos have to un verbo modal, sera la excepcin que rompe la regla: You have to hide so
that no one can see you!.
