INTRODUCCIN
INTRODUCTION
cpula. El dilatado proceso de construccin tom 240 aos.
Constructing Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral on extraordinarily soft soil was a formidable challenge back in 1573,
when the building was started. Its creators took advantage of the experience gained by the Aztecs during construction of
their Major Temple. In the case of the Aztecs, to the Mesoamerican tradition of superimposing new pyramids over the old
ones during the festivities of the New Fire, they incorporated the practical need of adding successive construction stages
to their buildings with the implicit purpose of concealing damage produce by differential settlements. Master builder
Claudio de Arciniega conceived an outstanding foundation for the Cathedral but even so settlements occurred during
the construction of the massive building compelled the succeeding architects to incorporate architectural ingenuity to
mask misalignments. In 1630, Juan Gmez de Trasmonte erected the vaults and the transept. Luis Gmez de
Trasmonte was appointed in 1656 to build the main dome. He was uncertain about the load bearing capacity of the
transept columns and his suggestion of enlarging them was not followed. Lorenzo Rodrguez constructed the Sagrario
(parish church) starting in 1749 and he adopted a similar foundation system, but with a lesser quality. Damin Ortiz de
Castro decided to repair the San Miguel chapel so it could bear the weight of the western bell tower and also began
constructing the campaniles in 1780. Manuel Tols completed the Cathedral in 1813 after harmonizing the building and
embellishing the dome. The long-lasting construction process took 240 years.
Emilio Rosenblueth, junto con los Doctores Daniel Resndiz, Gabriel Auvinet, Miguel Romo, Luis Arnal y Jess Aguirre;
Snchez y Arturo Ramrez Abraham.
CONACULTA
The Cathedral and the Sagrario church have survived up to now thanks to restorations that have taken place over more
than 300 years. Interventions have been increasingly complex due to the accumulation of structural damage and
inclination, and the exposure to ever higher differential settlement rates. It is more than seven years now since the end of
the Project for the Geometrical Correction of the Cathedral and the Sagrario Church and for hardening its subsoil. It is
very satisfactory to be able to state that, as verified with field measurements, the behavior of the religious complex
improved very favorably after the successive application of underexcavation and selective soil hardening.
Authorities responsible of the project decided to consult architectural and engineering learned societies in view of the
high degree of difficulty of the work described here and an international committee for overlooking the underexcavation
project was created, headed by Prof. Michele Jamiolkowsky, president of Committee for the Safeguard of the Tower of
Pisa. Prof. John B. Burland from Imperial College, London, and Prof. Giorgio Macchi from the University of Pavia, both
members of the committee for the Italian tower joined the team, together with Prof. Gholamreza Mesri from University of
Illinois, Dr. Pietro de Porchelinis from Cimentaciones Especiales Rodio and Dr. Miha Tomazevic from the Institute of
Tests in Eslovenia. Distinguished Mexican experts, Dr. Emilio Rosenblueth and Dr. Daniel Resndiz, were also
members of the committee, together with doctors Gabriel Auvinet, Miguel Romo, Luis Arnal and Jess Aguirre
Crdenas; other expert engineers joined the committee: Neftal Rodrguez, scar de Buen. Juan Manuel Orozco and
Juan Scmitter. After a thorough critical review of technical documents which included a close examination of the results
obtained with underexcavation trials performed at the San Antonio Abad Church and after inspecting the work being
done at the Cathedral, the international committee approved the project and recommended that underexcavation be
applied, using the geotechnical version of the Observational Method to control and verify each step in the process.
Thereafater, in August 1998, a second committee was formed, headed by Dr. Daniel Resndiz. Other participating
members were Dr. Gabriel Auvinet, Dr. Sergio Covarrubias and Dr. Manuel Mendoza, geotechnical consultants, as well
as Mr. Oscar de Buen and Mr. Neftal Rodrguez, structural engineers. The Second Committee's task was to examine
information about the injection of mortars at the Palace of Fine Arts as well as the results of mortar injection trials at
former Texcoco Lake and at the Cathedral's west atrium. The Committee approved mortar injections for hardening
selectively the subsoil. This was a most important decision because the use of this technique may very possibly avoid
the need to perform another underexcavation stage in the future; another advantage is that injection of mortars can be
reapplied in the future at a very reasonable cost.
Acknowledgements . Sergio Zaldvar, architect, headed the project since it began in 1989 until 2000; Dr. Xavier Corts
Rocha took over the direction of the project afterwards. Member of the Technical Committee that overlooked the
development of the project are duly acknowledged: Dr. Fernando Lpez Carmona, Dr. Roberto Meli, Dr. Enrique Tamez,
Ing. Enrique Santoyo Villa, Ing. Hilario Prieto. Dr. Jorge Daz Padilla acted as secretary for the committee and as
consultants, Dr. Efran Ovando Shelley, Ing. Roberto Snchez and Ing. Arturo Ramrez Abraham.

Il l u s t r at i v e s t r at i g r ap h i c al p r o f i l e. The
stratigraphical profile shown in Fig. 4 was produced
from the results of three CPT borings performed in
front of the Cathedral and of the Sagrario. As seen
there, the soil at the boundary between both churches
is stronger because it corresponds to the zone that
has received the heaviest load transmitted by the
Aztec temples, by an archaeological fill, and by the two
heavy Colonial structures. Towards both ends of the
profile penetration resistance reduces almost by a
half. This condition induced the tilting of the southern
part of the Cathedral towards the west whereas the
Sagrario is inclined to the east. This deformation
pattern explains the formation of historical fissures at
the west side of the Cathedral and at the east of the
Sagrario. The same figure also shows the thickness
and depth of the most relevant strata found in the soil
sequence at the site.
Subsoil deformations . The depth of the contact
between the natural shallow crust and the soft clays
was defined from information derived from the CPT
tests. That surface was originally flat but as a result of
the consolidation induced by the Aztec pyramids it
underwent depressions as deep as 10 m, as sown Fig.
4. This is why the site was leveled with artificial fills to
shape a new initial plane before the construction of the
Colonial churches.
Laboratory tests (one-dimensional consolidation
tests) demonstrated that the loads applied by the
former pre-Hispanic constructions were removed at
some parts, although in other areas they were
subsequently increased by the weight of the Cathedral

Notas / Notes:
Geo m et r y o f c o r r ec t ed s et t l em en t s . The
configuration of corrective settlements is represented
with meshes as those depicted in Fig. 9. The upper
mesh shows cumulative and corrective differential
settlements as of September 1999. The lower part of
the figure presents the same corrective settlements
but referred to a horizontal plane, i.e. without
considering historical differential settlement. The
shape and distribution of the corrective settlements
that reached a maximum of 88 cm, is also shown.
Corrections in the towers . Topographic surveys
evinced differential elevations that were originally
present in the main faade and the towers. Both
towers were monitored periodically starting in October
1993 using electronic plumbs with a sensitivity of 0.1
mm
and 35 m long steel wire lines
(precision=1/35,000 or 5.9). Regarding the influence
of underexcavation and mortar grouting, the
correction achieved by April 2000 at the west and east
towers consisted in rotations and displacements of
28.7 and 27.9 cm, respectively, along a northeast
direction, equivalent to correcting 26.3 and 24.6 % of
pre-existing tilts in the west and east towers, which
were initially inclined 109 and 113 cm, respectively.
Reference plumb line. The impossibility of seeing
with the naked eye the corrections that were in course
prompted the installation of a large plumb line at the
Cathedral's central dome, to make its movements
apparent to visitors. Fig. 9 presents the reconstruction
of the path followed by the plumb line in the course of
time. It is interesting to point out the change in the
direction of its trajectory induced by differential
settlements that resulted from the extraction of water
from underground aquifers, since the end of the 19th
century. It should also be mentioned that from October

Geotechnical measurements from 1911 to 1993 (prior to ballasting) evince that the Tower rotated 7 25 during that period.
This corrective rotation can be literally interpreted as taking the Tower back to the inclination it had 333 years ago.
However, the historical graph of its leaning demonstrates that the position corresponding to 140 years ago was
actually recovered.

Ef ec t i v i d ad d e l a i n y ec c i n p ar a el
endurecimiento.
comportamiento inicial, expresado grficamente
Pr ec i s i o n t o p o g r ap h i c s u r v ey s . These
measurements were made at 246 control points
distributed over the whole area covered by the
monument. Column and pilaster plinths as well as
chapel walls were leveled, including reference steel
bolts embedded in the outer walls. Points were located
at the walls of the Capilla de las nimas and of the
Curia, at the atrium fence bars, and at the top of the
deep benchmarks. These levelings were carried out
every two weeks from October 1991 to the end of
1999; it was subsequently decided to schedule them
monthly. A total of 215 levelings were made as of
August 2000. Three levelings per year were done
afterwards, until 2004. Two levelings were made in
2005 and none in 2006; the last survey was made in
December 2007 which added up to a total of 230.
Settlements accumulated since the beginning of the
project in October 1991 and since the start of
underexcavation in August 1993 were reported
graphically by means of contours lines. Differential
settlements produced every 28 days were also
presented graphically. During the leveling, the zero
curve corresponds to the historical reference: a point
located at the apse, at the intersection of axes C and 3,
in the west side of the Altar de los Reyes. It was
therefore possible to obtain the differential
movements with respect to this point. All levelings are
referred to a deep benchmark installed at a depth of
100.4 m below the surface (BNP-100) and are
correlated to the Atzacoalco Benchmark. The
movements recorded are the combination of those
induced by regional subsidence and those produced
by the effects of the corrective and preventive actions
discussed and described before.
Topographic configurations presented here were
deduced from interpolations in which the actual
coordinates of all leveled points were taken into
account. Those disclosed in previous publications and
papers were obtained applying other interpolation
criteria. These two interpretation forms can apparently
cause discrepancies between the figures of this
publication and those shown previously in other texts.
Those discrepancies are of little significance in
interpreting the general behavior but can be important
in analyzing structural details. That is why, to avoid any
confusion, the drafts shown here were prepared using
the new criterion.
CONACULTA
definida por el Dr. Fernando Lpez Carmona;
zonas faltantes.
14.
Originalmente se haba considerado que la
subexcavacin debera utilizarse peridicamente,
posiblemente cada 25 aos, para reducir los
hundimientos diferenciales futuros.
Sagrario.
subsuelo. Existen otros dos extensos reportes
estructurales de los Doctores Fernando Lpez
Carmona y Roberto Meli Piralla.

This document briefly describes the work carried out in the subsoil under the Cathedral and the Sagrario Church, from
the initial studies, geotechnical exploration, numerous experimental tests, underexcavation and soil hardening. This
was a long process that was interrupted several times due to various causes, it began in August 1989 and finished in
January 2002. All of the details in this complex project were overlooked by two structural experts, Dr. Fernando
Lpez Carmona and Dr. Roberto Meli.
Over the last one hundred years, the consequences of regional subsidence in Mexico City as well as the
compressibility of the soft clays in its subsoil prompted repeated repair work in the vaults of the Cathedral and the
Sagrario as well as three major interventions in their structures and foundations. In the first one, between 1906 and
1925, its director, Luis G. Olvera, repaired and reinforced the main dome and introduced steel profiles in 14 arches. In
second one, made in the foundation from 1942 to 1946, the masonry foundation beams were strengthened with
reinforced concrete. It was designed by the architects Manuel Ortiz Monasterio and Manuel Cortina Garca and was
carried out by Antonio Muoz. Control piles, an invention of Manuel Gonzlez Flores, were installed in 1972 during
the third intervention in an attempt to control the behavior of the foundations of both temples. However, ignorance of
deformation patterns and difficulties in installing the piles as well as to limitations of the piles themselves led to very
meager results and the behavior continued to be basically the same.
The fourth intervention is described in this booklet and began in 1989. Its first part was headed by Sergio Zaldvar
(architect, at the time Director de Sitios y Monumentos del Patrimonio Cultural, CONACULTA) and focused in the
geometrical correction of the structure, using the underexcavation technique to reduce inclinations, and continued
with soil hardening by means of hydraulic fracturing. In the second part the vaults were consolidated and mortars
were injected into the columns to eliminate stress concentrations produced by stone fragments wedged in between
masonry blocks, to level them; stresses are uniformized by injecting mortar in those spaces. This last part was in
charge of Dr. Xavier Corts Rocha (presently Director de Sitios y Monumentos del Patrimonio Cultural,
CONACULTA), continued with repairs in the towers and in the stone spheres that crown them. Another fundamental
part of this second stage was the restoration of altars, organs and paintings, all of which will finish at the end of 2008.
It is more than six years since geotechnical work ended and over this time the two temples have been closely
monitored. Based on the results of these instrumental observations it can now be ascertained that underexcavation and
soil hardening, developed in all their details to apply them in the Cathedral and the Sagrario have been successful, as
shown in this booklet. Both are pioneering technological developments whose usefulness were proven in this project
and can thus be considered as examples to follow in other monuments in downtown Mexico City or in any other part
of the world with soft consolidating soils. So it happened in the Tower of Pisa where Dr. Michele Jamiolkowsky,
president of the committee for the safeguard of the Tower, recognized that the case of the Cathedral was the
inspiration for underexcavation of the tower. More recently, the injection of the subsoil with hydraulic fracturing at
the tower of the Venetian church of the Frari (Franciscans) was also influenced by the experience gained at the
Cathedral.
The damaging effects of regional subsidence in Mexico City will be no doubt be present again in the Cathedral and the
Sagrario but attenuated, thanks to the efforts described in this booklet. These effects will be detected with the
instruments installed and with topographic surveys. For now we are certain that inclusions and mortar injections with
hydraulic fracturing in the clays are the best geotechnical tools to face them.
