On this occasion, Espacio Fundacin Telefnica presents Efecto Downey (Downey Effect),
an exhibition curated by the Chilean scholar Justo Pastor Mellado.
The exhibition revolves around the works of Juan Downey a Chilean video-artist who died
in 1993 and it includes the works of five young artists from Paraguay, Chile and Argentina.
The show approaches identity issues, autobiography and local history, using video as an
instrument.
The versatility of the space provided by Fundacin Telefnica encourages the presentation of a
wide range of curatorial proposals and the widest display of possibilities of exhibition along with ne
technologies. For this reason, every show is a surprise to the spectator in terms of the use of spaces
And this is the case with Efecto Downey, where at the same time this feature is emphasized in the
curators conceptual discourse on the show.
Just like in its early beginnings, Telefnica keeps on supporting the production of original
proposals, especially those intertwined with new technologies.

Justo Pastor Mellado
Instead of producing a list with the
CV of each of the artists in a general
file, Ive decided to explain why I have
them meet in this exhibition. My job as
an infrastructure curator sets me to
think exhibitions as goods to be
produced for the writing of history. Juan
Downeys work is a platform of
connections on which these works rely
as far as a referential network is built
one where the works define the
adequate ways to be approached. This
way, the participants biographies
should fulfill such purpose i.e. being
faithful to the singularity of this zone.
My research strategy is based on
two axes: transference and filiation.
Thats all Ive done. Born in 1949,
I went to Universidad Catlica de Chile
to study philosophy in 1968. However,
in a swift way, due to a significant
political defeat, I moved to the more
harboring fields of art criticism. In this
sense, coming from political philosophy,
my arrival to the area of the arts is
relatively recent. Since 1980, Ive been
writing on the Chilean and Latin
American scene. Even though, since
1992, when I met Ivo Mesquita and
Paulo Herkebhoff, Ive been devoted to
rebuild the circumstances for the rise
and tying together of the information
and condensation network of certain
works as to their projection in the
international scene in order to subtract
myself away from the domestic
determinations. The differentiation of
the scenes occurs in the consistency of
the institutions and in the ways the
artistic formations are constituted.
I consider the curatorial work as
the continuation of political criticism
through other means. I live and work
in Santiago de Chile. However, Im a
frequent traveler between Bogot,
Lima, Buenos Aires, Asuncin, Sao

Paraguayan artist who, as Fredi Casco,
works and lives in Asuncion. She also
stands near the conceptual complex
I have mentioned. Unlike Casco,
however, she has concentrated in the
production of works in which she
directly applies the representation of
corporality, following formal strategies
connected to thread story and seam
story. She has participated in the
second, third and fifth Artes Visuales
del Mercosur Biennial, in Porto Alegre.
She has been a resident artist in
England and Italy. Soon, together with
Fredi Casco and Bettina Brizuela, she
will exhibit her works at Galera
Animal in Santiago del Chile.
