El desarrollo de recursos no convencionales es un reto muy atractivo para nosotros como
profesionales en E&P. El conocimiento sobre este tema se encuentra todava en sus primeras
etapas, no solo en Argentina sino en el resto del mundo.
La Sociedad de Ingenieros de Petrleo (SPE), consciente de su papel, ha estado trabajando
en la organizacin de esta Conferencia de Exploracin y Desarrollo de Reservorios No
Convencionales de la SPE, convencidos de que slo con el intercambio efectivo de ideas,
experiencias de nuestras empresas y la ayuda de instituciones tcnicas, vamos a lograr un
rpido y fuerte crecimiento en el desarrollo de recursos no convencionales.
Con ms de 50 presentaciones tcnicas y ms de 300 asistentes, lo invitamos a usted y a sus

The development of unconventional resources is a very appealing challenge for us as E&P
professionals. The knowledge on this topic is still in the early stages, not only in Argentina
but worldwide.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), conscious of its role, has been working in the
organization of this SPE Exploration and Development of Unconventional Reservoirs
Conference convinced that only with the effective exchange of ideas, the experiences of our
companies and the aid of technical institutions, we will achieve a rapid and strong growth in
the development of unconventional resources.

1. Introduction to Petroleum Rock Mechanics
Introduction to Petroleum Rock Mechanics
The mechanics of rocks play an important role in all aspects of hydrocarbon exploitation. Their faulting and folding control
the movement and trapping of hydrocarbons in the reservoir. During seismic investigations, their elastic properties control
how much of the subsurface we can see. During drilling, rock failure around the wellbore can lead to expensive lost rig
time and stuck pipe, and rock failure under the bit partly controls the rate of drilling. During production, the rock itself can
fail and be produced to surface; if this is likely to be a problem, costly sand exclusion methods may be needed. Wells may
need to be hydraulically fractured for stimulation or formation damage bypass; the stress in the rock around the wellbore
strongly inuences this process. Finally, the reservoir itself may deform during production, sometimes beneting us with
compaction drive, sometimes causing us problems with subsidence and permeability decreases.
Rock mechanics has become an important tool for engineers and geologist working with oil eld problems. However,
very few specialists still exist that are fully conversant in rock engineering. We give a short introduction to the science
of rock mechanics, and discuss how it can be used to help improve the effectiveness of hydrocarbon exploitation,
with the emphasis on planning for wellbore stability control during drilling, and understanding hydraulic fracturing
stimulation and completion strategy. This intensive course can help understand the essential aspects of geomechanics
enabling an engineer or geoscientist to make better eld development decisions.

Introduction
Historically diagnostic pumping events were mostly used to ne tune our fracture design on location, like calibrate perfora-
tion and near wellbore frictions, measure frac uid efciency and possible pressure dependant leakoff.
Nowadays with high focus on tight and unconventional reservoirs where applying buildup techniques to measure reservoir
properties and evaluate hydraulic fracture effectiveness is unpractical due to closure time requirements, the application of
Diagnostic Fracture Injection Tests (DFIT) became very popular. Therefore it is very important that we properly understand
how these tests should be applied, its limitations and how to run the interpretation to get the most possible out of them.
We should keep in mind that one critical step we must take before running any test, is to dene what information we
are looking for. Based on this, we will be able design and plan for the proper test.

estudios integrados y estimaciones de reservas y recursos de hidrocarburos. Su carrera empieza con Exxon en donde
ejecuta estudios de simulacin y desarrollo en reas tan diversas desde el Este de Texas hasta Arabia Saudita. Luego
de casi 10 aos con Exxon se une a Ryder Scott Company en 1997. El Sr. Acua se ha especializado en evaluaciones
de reservas y servicios de consultora estratgica a compaas internacionales y gubernamentales. Hermn Acua fue
uno de los co-autores del reporte incipiente del potencial no convencional de Vaca Muerta en Argentina que da como
resultado un enfoque mundial a este recurso. El Sr. Acua tiene particular experiencia e inters en los aspectos proba-
bilsticos y efectos de portafolio de los recursos no convencionales.

Objetivos
1. Visualizar y comprender el marco estratigrco de la F. Vaca Muerta.
2. Interpretar y entender el sistema petrolero en el que participa la F. Vaca Muerta, poniendo nfasis en los presentes
en nuestros yacimientos.
3. Reconocer los elementos estratigrcos estructurales que pueden ser obtenidos con el objeto de mejorar nues-
tras caracterizaciones de subsuelo.
4. Identicar heterogeneidades laterales y verticales (litolgicas, granulomtricas, forma y espesor de los cuerpos,
etc.), y relacionarlas con posibles escenarios de produccin y estimulacin.
5. Comparar la informacin de aoramiento con la informacin de subsuelo, fundamentalmente registros elctricos
de pozo.
6. Analizar el aoramiento desde la ptica de la estimulacin por fracturamiento hidrulico, estableciendo hiptesis
de desarrollo en funcin de las caractersticas observadas.
