INTRODUCCIN:
Los teres tert-butlicos son los principales adi-tivos oxigenados que se utilizan en la
reformulacin de gasolinas. Los ms utilizados son: ter metil tert-butlico (MTBE), ter etil
tert-butlico (ETBE) y ter etil tert-amlico (TAME). Se han detectado problemas ambientales
con el MTBE, por eso las nuevas normativas obligan a buscar otros aditivos que lo sustituyan.
El ETBE presenta mejores propiedades de mezclado, adems se obtiene de etanol que procede
de fuentes renovables. Estas caractersticas facili-tan la adaptacin progresiva de una planta
que produce MTBE para producir ETBE.
La sntesis de ambos teres son similares, pero la termodinmica es ms restrictivas para el
ter etlico (Sneesby, et al., 1997). Por la existencia de dos azetropos, la mayor parte del
alcohol residual se obtiene con el ETBE en los fondos de la columna de destilacin. La cintica
de la reaccin de formacin de ETBE fue estudiada por Zhang et al. (1997), Jensen y Datta
(1995) y Schwarzer et al. (2000), ellos observaron que un exceso de alcohol favorece la
formacin del ter e inhibe las reacciones secundarias. En los centros activos del catalizador se
adsorben etanol e isobuteno; a alta concentracin de alcohol, este domina la superficie, pero a
baja concentracin, el isobuteno tiende a adsorberse en centros activos adyacentes,
favoreciendo la formacin de los di-isobutenos (DIB). Fit et al. (1994), Estudiaron la formacin
de ETBE y ob-servaron que un gran exceso de etanol tiene un efecto inhibidor en la reaccin
de formacin del ter y por lo tanto, debe existir un valor de la relacin molar de alimentacin
etanol/isobuteno (E/I) que maximiza la selectividad hacia el ter y reduce la concentracin de
alcohol en los fondos de la columna de destilacin.
El proceso Hls de produccin de teres tert-butlicos se muestra en la figura 1; y lo forman
tres etapas principales:
