= the Indef. = a(n), some, 0 Español: Def. = -l Indef. Ejemplo de referencia anafórica Ten lionesses at the city zoo are to be put on a contraceptive pill to prevent a population explosion. For 20 years the lions have prided themselves on their breeding capabilities. Now the treatment will make them infertile for 3 years and so stop the increase. Ejemplos de identificación catafórica y exofórica Identificación catafórica: By an odd coincidence the first message [transmitted by telephone] was a cry for help from its inventor. Identificación exofórica: We will go to the zoo next week. Iremos al zoológico la próxima semana. Ejercicio 1 Some obsessive-compulsive disorder sufferers develop rituals which reduce anxiety, but these rituals are only remotely related to the obsessional thoughts –for example: responding to an intrusive thought about family members being involved in an accident by turning around three times. Again, this kind of behaviour seems odd at first sight, but is it really that odd? Most people have some sort of superstitious behaviour that, when performed, reduces anxiety; many students take lucky charms into the examination room; a particular pen may be associated with exam success, and used in every exam thereafter; people still throw salt over their shoulders, and touch wood to avoid calamities. Because calamities are rare, superstitious behaviours seem pretty effective. Ejercicio 2 The Hawaiian Islands are remote. It is hard to appreciate how far away they are from any continent, when an aeroplane can whisk you there in a few hours from San Francisco. As you look through the cabins windows at endless blue water, time seems to collapse. Yet all time you pass over the vast and appparently feautureless Pacific you are also traversing and incalculable strech of basalt. The Islands floored by varieties of igneous rock have 363 million square kilometres of sea floor. Ejercicio 3 Part of what makes South Park so much fun to consider from an academic perspective is the fact that the program is hyperaware of itself as participating precisely in a debate about the value and influence of popular culture. All texts are invariably and inevitably products of their historical moments and the show is no different: It has a history, it is a product of historical forces, and it quite consciously incorporates and contends with a variety of specific histories. Ejercicio 1b A boy of 12 has unearthed evidence exonerating the US Navy officer blamed for a wartime disaster in which 880 men died, many of them picked off by sharks as they drifted helplessly in the Pacific. Researching a school history project, Hunter Scott, from Pensacola, Florida, unearthed records showing Capt. Charles Mc Vay was framed so that the top brass would escape blame for the highest number of deaths in American naval history. Ejercicio 1b… The gruesome fate of the men aboard the Indianapolis is the stuff of legend, and was part of the psychodrama of the film Jaws. Quint, the old sea dog played by the actor Robert Shaw, explains that his lifelong vendetta against sharks stems from five days and nights 30 years earlier which he spent watching his Indianapolis shipmates being eaten. In July 1945, the heavy cruiser was steaming in enemy waters some 600 miles west of the island of Guam when two torpedoes were fired into its hull, sinking it within minutes. The ship's radio was destroyed, preventing a call for help. Ejercicio 2 Since the beginning of culture, man has been curious about the world in which he lives; he has continually sought explanations for his own existence and for the existence of the world: how it was created, how it developed and brought forth life and humankind, and how one day it will end. Early ideas on the subject were developed in mythological, religious, or philosophical frameworks. All these ideas have a common characteristic: they are directed to the totality of the phenomena; they want to account for everything that is. They intend to present the absolute truth by attempting to give immediate answers to the fundamental questions of existence: "Why is the world the way we find it? What is life? What is the beginning and end of the universe? Ejercicio 2… Several hundred years ago, human curiosity took a different turn: instead of reaching for the whole truth, people began to examine definable and clearly separable phenomena. They asked not "What is matter?" and "What is life?" but "What are the properties of matter?" and "How does blood flow in the blood vessels?"; not "How was the world created?" but "How do the planets move in the sky?" In other words, general questions were shunned in favor of limited ones for which it seemed easier to get direct and unambiguous answers. The England of the Elizabethan period no longer exists. I shall never forget the Christmas of last year. Nunca olvidaré la Navidad del año pasado. Sustantivos propios definidos

Ejercicios Oil-users in importing countries reacted to the OPEC embargo and price-rise with blank disbelief. This could not be happening. But it was. The unilateral price increase was alarming enough; but what really shook users as the embargo. What triggered the panic, not only in the U.S. and the Netherlands but in every industrial country. Was the realization that in only two decades the oil-users in importing countries had delivered themselves helpless into the hands of their foreign suppliers. The oil-using cars and central heating and power stations woul be cold, still and useless without their pungent lifeblood; and nothing the users could do would make any differemce until far too late. Ejercicios In the weeks and months after what became known as the “oil shock”, oil was transformed from a commodity dealt with by commerce, into a policy issue dealt with by governments. In the US, the onset of the winter of 1973-4 demonstrated that, even before the OPEC embargo, supplies of heating oil and natural gas would not suffice to meet the peak demand. Ejercicio contrastivo 1 The time and circunstances surrounding the arrival of the first human inhabitants of North and South America has become a lively topic for debate. However, the Northern Plains and montane basins of the central and southern Rocky Mountains have produced some of the best preserved evidence of North America’s earliest known pedestrian, large mammal hunters whose presence is documented during the closing years of the Pleistocene. Ejercicio contrastivo 1 Other groups, recognized by weaponry and tool assemblages, were present until ~9,000 years ago. By 11,000 years ago, a number of large mammal species, including the mammoth, mastodon, camel, and horse were extinct or nearly so, and the older subspecies of bison would follow soon after. The search for an explanation of these Pleistocene extinctions has been another lively and controversial topic for paleontologists, biologists, geologists, and numerous other specialists for several decades. The debate turns on whether the late Pleistocene extinctions were the results of paleoecological changes, human predation, or a mixture of both. The problem shows no signs of an immediate resolution.
