He wrote this poem during the Summer of April 1876, before entering

his fifth year in Ateneo Municipal in June.

This poem reflects the very strong connection between Jesuit education
and faith. It expresses his belief in the importance of religion in the

The first text was written in Spanish (Alianza Íntima Entre La Religión Y
La Educación) but was later translated into English and Filipino (Malapit
na Ugnayan ng Relihiyon at Mabuting Edukasyon)

ALIANZA ÍNTIMA ENTRE LA RELIGIÓN Y LA EDUCACIÓN

Si de la vid pomposa
El tallo ufano crece
Cual hiedra trepadora Y sus dulces racimos nos ofrece,
Tortuosa camina En tanto que al sarmiento generosa
Por el olmo empinado, Alimenta la planta cariñosa;
Si el rocío del cielo
Siendo entrambos encanto al verde prado, Tal límpidas Corrientes
Vigoriza y sustenta a la pradera,
Y a la par se embelecen De célica virtud dan nueva vida
Y por él, en Hermosa primavera,
Mientras unidos crecen; A Educación cumplida,
Salen las flores a border el suelo;
Y si el olmo compasivo faltase, Guiándola con sus luces refulgentes;
Tal si a la Educación fecundizara
La hiedraal carecer de su Consuelo Por ella delicado olar exhale,
Con sus doctrinas Religión piadosa,
Vería tristemente marchitarse; Y Sus frutos sabrosos nos regala.
Hacia el bien lacentera caminara
Tal la Educación estrecha alianza Sin Religión, la Educación humana
Con planta generosa;
Con alma Religión une sincera; Es cual nave del viento combatida
Y dando de virtud lozanas flores
Por ella Educación renombre alcanza; Que pierde su timón en lucha horrible
Esparciera doquiera sus olores.
Y ¡ay! Del ser que ciegao desechando Al fragoroso impulse y sacudida
De santa Religión sabias doctrinas, Del proceloso Bóreas terrible
De su puro raudal huye nefando. Que la combate fiero
Hasta undirla altanero
En los abismos de la mar airada.

Habang Umaakyat ang baging sa puno
Hirap na gumagapang, kasama ang palamuti
Ng luntiang parang, iginaganyak Kung walang Relihiyon, Edukasyong Pantao Tulad nito’y bangkang
Ang isa’t isa at sabay na lumalago. hinampas ng hangin Na nawalan ng lakas, di malaman ang gagawin
Ngunit sakaling tanggihan ng puno ang tulong Sa nangangalit na alon, nakatatakot ana daluyong Malupit na Boreas,
Ang baging ay maluluoy, magiging inutil. nasa’yo ang lakas At kapangyarihang ipinangangalandakan sa’min
Gayon din ang Edukasyon sa Relihiyon, Dito sa kaibuturan ng iyong nangangalit na dagat.
Pinag-ugnay ng isang dakilang Espiritu.
Sa Relihiyon, Edukasyon ay nakikilala,
At hinagpis sa lapastangang isiping tumatanggi
Sa batayang aralin ng Relihiyon,
Habang ang hamog ng langit ay pagkain ng bulaklak
Itong malinis na isapa’y napapabayaan.
Nagpapalakas sa kayumanging lupa,
Habang ang sinol, umuusbong mula sab aging, Palamuti ng araw ng tagsibol; kaya ganoon din
Buong pagmamalaking nag-aalay ng tamis Kapag ang Relihiyon ang nakalinga
Habang ang magarang kasuotan Sa Edukasyon at mga doktrina nito,
Pianakakain mga ugat nito; gayundin ang tubig Taas-noo siyang maglalakas, masaya
Ng saloobin ng kalangitan ay nagbibigay-buhay Tungo sa kabutihan, at saanma’y
Sa Edukasyong tunay, naghahasik Maamo’y, mapipitas ang mga prutas ng saloobin
Ng liwanag, nagbibigay init; dahil sa kanila
Ang baging ay mabango at prutas nito’y matamis
Kay lungkot, O Hari ng sakalangitan
Nagkatawang-tao’t sa lupa’t tumahan,
Hindi Mo ba ibig na Haring matanghal
Kundi Pastol naming sa kawan Mong mahal?

Of the verdant plain, embellishing
Each other and together growing,
But should the kindly elm refuse its aid
The ivy would impotent and friendless wither
So is Education to Religion
By spiritual alliance bound
Through Religion, Education gains reknown, and
Woe to the impious mind that blindly spurning
The sapient teachings of religion, this
Unpolluted fountain-head forsakes.
As the sprout, growing from the pompous vine,
Proudly offers us its honeyed clusters
While the generous and loving garment
Feeds its roots; so the fresh’ning waters
Of celestial virtue give new life
To Education true, shedding
On it warmth and light; because of them
The vine smells sweet and gives delicious fruit
Without Religion, Human Education
Is like unto a vessel struck by winds
Which, sore beset, is of its helm deprived
By the roaring blows and buffets of the dread
Tempestuous Boreas, who fiercely wields
His power until he proudly send her down
Into the deep abysses of then angered sea.
As the heaven’s dew the meadow feeds and strengthen
So that blooming flowers all the earth
Embrioder in the days of spring; so also
If Religion holy nourishes
Education with its doctrine, she
Shall walk in joy and generosity
Toward the good, and everywhere bestrew
The fragrant and luxuriant fruits of virtue

when education is accompanied by religion, it leads
to not just Intellectual development, but also Moral
and Spiritual enlightenment.
