CONTINUOUS
Para formar el presente continuo se utiliza el verbo
auxiliar “to be” y el verbo+ing.
Sujeto Auxiliar (to be) Verbo+ing
talking, eating, learning,
I am
doing, going…
love loving
come coming
see seeing
Los verbos formados por una sola sílaba que solo tienen una
vocal y terminan en consonante, doblan esa consonante antes de
añadir —ing.
run running
win winning
sit sitting
Los verbos de dos sílabas con la acentuación en la
segunda sílaba también doblan la consonante.
begin beginning
prefer preferring
admit admitting
Los verbos terminados en una sola vocal + L, doblan la L
antes de añadir —ing en inglés británico pero no en inglés
americano.
travel travelling (UK)
travel traveling (USA)
Los verbos terminados en —y hacen el
gerundio normalmente.
play playing
study studying
carry carrying
Cuando un verbo termina de ésta forma, se reemplaza la
combinación de vocales "ie", por la consonante "y",
agregando al final el gerundio "-ing".

• I’m studying now. (Estoy estudiando ahora.)
utiliza para
hablar sobre algo
• He’s eating at the moment. (Está comiendo en este momento.)
que está pasando
en el momento en • Is it raining? (¿Está lloviendo?)
el que hablamos.
2. También lo usamos para hablar de algo que está sucediendo
en la actualidad pero no necesariamente cuando hablamos. En
este caso, se utilizan expresiones de tiempo como “currently”,
“lately” o “these days”.
Ejemplos:
• He’s not [He isn’t] coming to class tomorrow. (No viene a la clase manaña.)
Involuntaria:
• I am seeing you.
• It smells like you are cooking something. (Huele como que estás cocinando algo.)
• I am tasting the soup to see if it is as good as it smells. (Estoy probando la sopa para ver si es tan buena
como huele. )
• Do you think there is something wrong? (¿Crees que hay algo mal?)
• I am being ill.
• I don’t care if you don’t like it, you are going to
• David needs a new car. (David necesita un nuevo coche.) eat it! (No me importa si no te gusta, ¡vas a comerlo!)
• I’m not caring if you are not liking it, you are going
• David is needing a new car.

Ejemplos:
• Ann owned a house when she lived in New York. (Ann poseyó una casa
cuando vivió en Nueva York.)
• Ann was owning a house when she lived in New York.
• Ejemplos:
• I have [I’ve got] a car. (Tengo un coche.)
• I am having a car.
• I disagree, I think it’s a great idea. (No estoy de acuerdo, creo que es una gran idea.)
