What is a BLOCK MODEL?
• 3D arrays of rectangular or cubical blocks used to model
orebodies and other sub-surface structures.
• Size of block chosen to adequately represent the geology
and mining method to be used.
• An area is divided into a matrix of
blocks whose dimensions are
governed by the mining method
and the geology.
Types of models
• Standard block models
• Seam models
Grade Block Models
A grade can be assigned to each block by a variety of
methods:
- inverse distance weighting
- block kriging
- Laplace interpolation
Rock-type Block Models
• Each block can also be assigned a rock type or rock
code, a metallurgical code ( eg sulphide or oxide),
density, rock competency, etc.
Laterite (10)
Oxide (20)
• Block Model attributes are stored in individual
block models that have the same no. of rows,
columns and levels.
• A typical project will consist of a set of block
models organised in folders.
Using block models ..
• You can update blocks using solids, polygons and
points.
• Interpolate data using ID or kriging methods
• View block model data against other data such as
drillholes, traverses, sample points, etc.
• Use block model data as visual refrenece for pit, cut,
stope design, etc.
• Use block model grades for ore reserve calculations.
• etc.
Manipulating block model Data
• Create equivalent grade models for multi-
metallic deposits
• Find ratios of different elements
• Create density models (density as function
of rocktypes, grades, etc.
• Convert block model from one set of units
top another
• etc.
Display Modes
• Block Outlines
• Block values
• Block Outlines and Values
• Cubes
• Display more than one value per block
