Introduction
Hass avocado (Persea americana Miller) is a crop that has been increasing its sowing on a large
scale in Colombia, according to DANE, this product is one of the fruit trees with the highest
growth in areas in the last decade and is currently the third most important fruit tree in the
national agricultural sector. It should be taken into account that Colombia has excellent
conditions in terms of soil and climate, which means that the avocado has a very good
production, despite being a robust tree in its natural environment, it has a series of phytosanitary
limitations that are manifested both in nurseries and commercial home orchard plantations, in
reference to this methodology Bartoli, (2008) explains "as a consequence, the farmer must
employ management strategies that allow him to keep diseases at levels that do not produce
economic damage and avoid the arrival of other diseases", according to Bekey (1987) he
comments that "avocado root rot is favoured under conditions of high humidity". Castaño and
Zapata (2002) explain that "it is essential to keep in mind that an epidemic requires three factors
environment for the infection of the pathogen and the subsequent development of the disease".
EIM requires the farmer to understand how the crop and the pathogen populations that attack it
develop, what options are available for managing a particular disease, and the return on
investment, together with its impact on the environment and public health (Rajotte, 1993, p.132).
Developing
In field conditions, the disease occurs in foci, in the wettest areas, affected trees stop growing,
leaves are reduced in size, lose their normal green colour and are pale in appearance, with time a
slight but generalised yellowing of the tree occurs. As the vigour of the tree decreases, a slight
but progressive wilting of the tree is observed, even in conditions of adequate humidity, due to
the rotting of the absorbing roots, diminishing the intake of water and nutrients, when observing
the secondary or absorbing roots of the diseased trees, these manifest a necrosis or death of dark
colour, the fungus can attack the base of the stem and colonize it totally, the fungus can attack
the base of the stem and colonize it totally, producing wilting, drying and sudden death of the
tree.
The pathogen
Phytophthora cinnamomi and other members of the genus Phytophthora bear a superficial
resemblance to fungi, but are not part of the same kingdom and differ in that their cell walls are
composed of celluloses rather than chitins; they belong to the Oomycota (class Oomycetes)
which are placed in the kingdom Chromista (Stramenopila).is a soil pathogen that attacks the
root system of a wide range of plant species. It grows with microscopic-sized filaments
(mycelium) on the root surface and invades the cells of susceptible plants. On host plants it
causes lesions that look like rotten areas. This weakens or kills plants by reducing or stopping the
movement of water and nutrients within the plant (Calm,2003, p.21), currently, Phytophthora
cinnamomi root rot is the most serious disease of avocado in the world (Neilsen,2016, p.21) In
Colombia, cinnamomi has been the only species of this Oomycete that has been clearly identified
Life cycle
Zoospores, chlamydospores and oospores are structures that P. cinnamonio produces for the
development and surface of the disease, the pathogen enters the asexual sporulation cycle in the
presence of excessive moisture, by effects of heavy irrigation, abundant rainfall, flooding or poor
drainage and when soil temperature rises from 24 to 28°C. The sporangia release zoospores (the
main infection structure) which, with the aid of flagella, move towards the young roots of the
host, as a chemotactic response to the amino acids and sugars released by the roots. When they
reach the root of the host, they attach themselves to the rootlets by means of an adhesive
secretion and then become encysted and finally germinate; according to Zentmyer (1961),
penetration occurs about 24 hours after infection. Six hours after penetration, the feeder root

three soil samples were taken between 10 and 20 cm depth in the root zone (rhizosphere) of each
seedling, the equivalent of 10 g of soil (dry weight), mixed with 100 mL of a 0.25% water-agar
solution; then, 2 mL of the suspension (soil-water-agar) were taken, sown in Petri dishes with

Four expanded leaves were collected from each avocado seedling, packed in paper bags and

treatment and each type of fertilisation were weighed and sent to the Soil Chemistry laboratory
of C.I. Tibaitara (CORPOICA), Bogotá, for their respective analysis. The interpretation of the
results of the foliar analysis of macro and micronutrients was carried out following the criteria of

Metalaxel 4%, Mancozeb 35%, Fosetyl-Al 35%, Potassium Phosphite, there was a decrease in
the pathogen population in the soil by 41, 30 and 48%, respectively, compared to the plant

is in agreement with the results of Garcia et al. (2003), who demonstrated that Trichoderma is a
cellulose degrading organism, and by Erwin & Ribeiro (1996), who demonstrated that T.
harzianum is a fungus that inhibits P. cinnamomi , competing with infections or parasites. The
averages between treatments in the three periods evaluated showed a decrease in the population
of the pathogen in the soil of 12.13 and 5% in the integrated fertilisation. The treatment with
experiments with pH greater than 6 and organic matter content greater than 7%; In addition, in
the artificial fertilisation an organic matter based on chicken manure was used, as agreed by Pegg

content (>7%), high carbon: nitrogen content and pH greater than 6, high population maintained
Disease severity (%): Differences have been observed, there was a high level of
significance between treatments in all three evaluations. With Tukey's resource comparison test

harzianum, showed a decrease in severity of 19, 28 and 17%, with respect to the control. The
decrease in the severity of root rot due to the effect of chemical and biological products, agrees
with Mora et al, (1987), Rosas et al (1986), Coffey (1987), Valenzuela et al (1985), Downer et al
(2002), Broadbent & Baker (1974) and Alle et al (1980), who observed that some of the products
used successfully for the management of this disease were: Metalaxyl, Fosetil-al, potassium

comparison of means of tukes at 5%, it was observed that the treatments, in the three evaluations,
with chemicals (Mancozeb 64% + Metalaxyl 4%, Mancozeb 35% + Fosetil- 35% and potassium
phosphite) the seedlings increased in height, the increase reached 36.17 and 32%, respectively,
these treatments significantly decreased the population of the pathogen in the soil and severity.
When considering the treatments with sugar cane bagasse + T, harzianum, the height of the
seedlings also increased with respect to the control by 10 and 18%, respectively.
Colonies of P. cinnamomi isolated from soil, according to treatments. Taken from the journal
The test of comparison of measures of Tukey at 5%, showed that in the three evaluations the
chemical treatments, produced the highest values of dry weight of the seedlings, with respect to
the control, however it is important to highlight the treatment with Mancozeb 35% and + Fosetyl
- 35%, which presented in the three evaluated periods, the highest values of weight, with
increases of 69,41 and 90%, respectively, in relation to the control. Both fosetyl and potassium
phosphite have similar active ingredients, which are recommended as fungicides and others as
fertilisers, although potassium phosphites are useful for pathogen control (PLM, 2012, P.111).
The content of organic matter, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca),
magnesium (Mg) and sulphur (S) in the soil was high; the concentration of nitrogen in the leaves
of avocado seedlings, showed a deficient level (less 1. 6%) in all treatments and fertilisation
types; the low level of N in the leaves may be due to the loss in the soil by leaching or washing
caused by irrigation water (Guerrero, 1995, p.111).). The concentration of K in the leaves only
exceeded the deficient level (greater than 0.35%) which was very similar in all treatments and in
the two types of fertilization; however, it is important to consider that in the soil there was good
availability of this element, but it was not absorbed by the avocado seedlings in the necessary
quantities, the element is highly mobile in the plant and can improve resistance to attack by pests
treatments, however, there were differences between fertilisation types. On the other hand, root
rot developed from the moment of inoculation, reducing the possibility of absorption and
mobilisation of micronutrients from the soil to the aerial part of the seedlings, showing scarce
foliar development and proliferation of new roots. According to Valenzuela et al (1985), fertile
soils with a high content of organic matter favour the root growth of avocado, which allows a
Chemical fertilization and biofertilization decreased the population of P. cinnamomi in the soil
and the severity of the disease, as well as increased the height and dry weight of avocado
seedlings. In the integrated fertilisation, there was a significant reduction in the population of P.
cinnamomi in the soil and the severity of the disease, in relation to the chemical fertilisation; it
also showed an increase in the height and dry weight of the avocado seedlings. The soils treated
with sugarcane bagasse + T. harzianum and T. harzianum alone showed the highest values of
cellulose enzymatic activity, compared to the control. It is important to consider that bagasse has
phosphite, T. harzianum and organic cover based on sugar cane bagasse with high cellulose
content and fertile soils, significantly reduced the disease, indicating that the review is oriented
to propose alternatives for the integrated management of the disease (MIE), involving practices
based on four basic principles: sanitation, cultural and biological management, use of resistant
