no de los principales objetivos del Pro-
yecto del Gran Ecosistema Marino del
Golfo de México (GEM GM) es el in-
volucrar a las comunidades en la conservación
y manejo sustentable de los recursos marinos.
En este sentido, el GEM GM trabaja en estrecha
colaboración con la Comisión Nacional de Áreas
Naturales Protegidas (CONANP) para lograr
una mayor sensibilización sobre la importancia
de los valores ecológicos, sociales, culturales y
económicos de los ecosistemas marinos y cos-
teros del Área Natural Protegida (ANP) Laguna
de Términos, Campeche. Otro objetivo del pro-
yecto GEM GM es abordar la interacción entre el
medio natural y las actividades humanas a tra-
vés de estrategias de educación ambiental.
Para alcanzar estos objetivos se ha emplea-
do el proceso de planeación participativa orga-
nizando talleres de participación social de ma-
nera conjunta con la comunidad y autoridades
de diferentes niveles (ejido, municipio, Capitanía
de Puerto, Gobierno del Estado, Delegaciones
Estatales, etc.). También se ha contado con la
colaboración de investigadores de la Universi-
dad Autónoma del Carmen (UNACAR) y de la
Universidad Veracruzana (UV).
De los talleres realizados hay cinco que se
llevaron a cabo de finales de agosto a principios

ne of the main objectives of the Gulf of Mexico
Large Marine Ecosystem (GoM LME) Project
is to involve communities in the conservation and
sustainable management of marine resources.
In this sense, the GoM LME works in close
cooperation with the National Commission for
Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) to raise
awareness about the importance of ecological,
social, cultural and economic values of marine and
coastal ecosystems of the Natural Protected Area
(NPA) Laguna de Terminos, Campeche. Another
target of the GoM LME Project is to address the
interaction between the natural environment
and human activities through environmental
education strategies.
To achieve these objectives we used the par-
ticipatory planning process and organized social
participation workshops jointly with the communi-
ty and authorities of different levels (ejido, munici-
pality, Harbor, State Government, State Delega-
tions, etc.). Researchers from the Autonomous
University of Carmen (UNACAR) and University
of Veracruz (UV) have also collaborated.
There are five workshops that were conduc-
ted from late August to early September of this

de septiembre de este año y que destacan por
el número de participantes (300), por la calidad y
cantidad de información obtenida, por los acuer-
dos a los que se llegaron y por el interés de la
gente en contribuir a mejorar la calidad de vida
de su comunidad.
El tema de los talleres varió en cada comuni-
dad así: en El Aguacatal - Santa Rita fue sobre
pesca responsable (Fig. 1); en Isla Aguanda
sobre participación social y el uso sustenta-
ble de los recursos naturales de la Laguna de
Términos (Fig. 2); en Atasta sobre el ANP y los
bienes y servicios de los humedales (Fig.3).
Sin embargo, en todos los talleres se recabó
información sobre la presencia espacial y tem-
poral de los recursos naturales, con especial
énfasis en los recursos pesqueros, y se identi-
ficaron alternativas económicas. Una de estas
alternativas es el ecoturismo el cual se lleva a
cabo en la comunidad de Isla Aguada y que el
GEM GM y el ANP Laguna de Términos han
contribuido a organizar, planificar y regularizar.
Durante el taller se llegaron a varios acuerdos
entre los que destacan: 1) el establecimiento
de un costo único del recorrido turístico, 2) el
embarque y desembarque del muelle de API, 3)
el rol de rotación de las cooperativas para que

The theme of the workshops varied in each
community: in the Aguacatal - Santa Rita was on

ral resources of Laguna de Terminos (Fig.2), in
Atasta on the NPA and the goods and services
of wetlands (Fig.3). However, in all workshops
information was complied on spatial and tempo-
ral presence of natural resources, with special
emphasis on fisheries resources, and economic
alternatives were identified. One such alterna-
tive is ecotourism which has taken place in the
community of Isla Aguada and the GEM GM
and ANP Terms Lagoon has helped to organize,
plan and regulate. During the workshop several
agreements were reached, some of which are:
1) the establishment of a single price of the trip,
2) embark and disembark at the dock of API, 3)
the rotation of cooperatives so that everyone
gets the same opportunity to work and 4) the de-
velopment of a manual of best practices to en-
sure that the activity is sustainable and quality

Una especie carismática, como lo son los
delfines, puede servir como un catalizador im-
portante para impulsar la conciencia pública y la
acción. En este sentido, también se ha puesto
énfasis en considerar al manatí como uno de los
recursos marinos vivos prioritario del GEM GM.
Esta especie tiene una presencia importante en
la Laguna de Términos y está en peligro de ex-
tinción por lo que se han realizado talleres de
educación ambiental con los niños de las escue-
las primarias de la comunidad de Atasta, en los
cuales también han participado los padres de fa-
milia y los profesores. Los talleres se centraron
en los bienes y servicios de los humedales, en
la importancia de vivir en un ANP, en el manatí
como especie clave del ecosistema manglar y
en cómo todos podemos contribuir en la conser-
vación y el manejo sustentable de los recursos
naturales.

of dolphins of Laguna de Terminos.
Charismatic species, such as dolphins, can
serve as an important catalyst to promote pu-
blic awareness and action. In this sense, em-
phasis has been placed on considering the
manatee as one of the priority living marine
resources of the GoM LME. This species has
a significant presence in the Laguna de Termi-
nos and is in danger of extinction so they have
given environmental education workshops to
children of the elementary school of the Atas-
ta community, in which parents and teachers
also participated. The workshops were focused
on the goods and services of wetlands, in the
importance of living in a NPA, in the manatee
as a key species of the mangrove ecosystem
and how we can all contribute to the conser-
vation and sustainable management of natural
resources. The Biol. Blanca Cortina, from the
University of Veracruz and who as been working
for nearly 15 years with the conservation of the
manatee within the rural communities of the
wetland of Alvarado, Veracruz collaborated with
the workshop.

En estos talleres colaboró la Biól. Blanca Cor-
tina de la Universidad Veracruzana quien tiene
cerca de 15 años trabajando en la conservación
del manatí con las comunidades rurales de los
humedales de Alvarado, Veracruz. Ella explicó
al grupo de adultos como la elaboración de ar-
tesanías a partir del lirio acuático ha sido una
alternativa económica para las cooperativas de
mujeres de Alvarado, Ver. También dio detalles
sobre la construcción de
casas y cuartos a partir de
las botellas de plásticos
(agua y refrescos) relle-
nas de arena.

She explained to adults that the elaboration
of handicrafts with water lily could be an alter-
native to economy, which has been success-
fully carried out by cooperatives of women in
Alvarado, Ver. She also gave details about the
construction of houses and rooms, with plastic
bottles (sodas and water) filled with sand.

The involvement and full participation of
the community is vital to bring about change
in attitude and raise awareness of the impor-
tance of marine resources. The strategy to in-
form, discuss and agree with the community on

discutir y acordar con la comunidad las diferentes

nejo sustentable de los recursos marinos tiene
un componente social y que sólo integrando
esta parte podremos llevar a cabo actividades
económica y ecológicamente sustentables.

l II Congreso Nacional de Investigación
de Cambio Climático se llevó a cabo del
17 al 19 de octubre en Mérida, Yucatán.
Organizado por la red de cambio climático, con
el liderazgo del CINVESTAV Unidad Mérida.
El Congreso hizo un análisis de los efectos
que se registran en las costas del Golfo de
México, en particular en la region Sureste, con
propuestas para intervenir de manera oportuna.
Por parte de los organizadores el Dr. Víctor Vidal
Martínez, coordinó el congreso, con el apoyo de
la antropóloga Emma Rosa Alonzo Marrufo y el
biólogo Ricardo Torres Lara.
El objetivo central del Congreso fue generar
un mensaje colegiado hacia los tomadores de
decisiones, empresarios, y otros miembros de
la sociedad civil sobre los efectos del cambio
climático y las posibles soluciones. Este es el
Segundo Congreso que cuenta con una amplia
colaboración de instituciones academicas nacio-

T he II National Congress on Climate Change
Research took place from the 17th to the
19th of October in Merida, Yucatan. It was orga-
nized by the climate change research network,
with the leadership of CINVESTAV Campus
Merida. The congress analyzed the effects re-
gistered on the Gulf of Mexico coasts, in parti-
cular in the Southeastern region, with proposals
to intervene in time. On behalf of the organi-
zers, Dr. Victor Vidal Martinez, coordinated the
congress with the support of the Ms. Emma
Rosa Alonzo Marrufo and the Mr. Ricardo
Torres Lara.
The Congress´ main objective was to gene-
rate a collegiate message for decision makers,
entrepreneurs and other members from civil
society on climate change effects and possible

ma de Cambio Climático del Gobierno Federal
y la ONU. Este congreso aglutina información
científica disponible en México sobre cambio cli-
mático. En este 2012 el congreso se realiza por
sedes regionales agrupando a los estados del
Sureste; Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo,
Chiapas y Yucatán.
En esta edición del Segundo Congreso ade-
más de la información científica, se abordaron
temas de carácter social, donde hay interven-
ción de los diversos sectores de la sociedad
Mexicana. Uno de los temas centrales aborda-
dos fue el de la vulnerabilidad y adaptación al
cambio climático en las zonas costeras.
Sobre este tema en el contexto de la escala
regional Golfo de México, el Programa del Gran
Ecosistema Marino a cargo del Dr. Porfirio Álva-
rez, presentó los avances del programa Binacional
México Estados Unidos de América, informando
de los diversos componentes de trabajo y accio-
nes conjuntas que ambas naciones realizan en el
Golfo de México y destacó los resultados de los ta-
lleres binacionales que han dado pauta a nuevas
colaboraciones regionales con participantes cien-
tíficos mexicanos y norteamericanos, así como
con instituciones federales y académicas.
El Dr. Alvarez citó el tema de la vulnerabilidad
costera y los riesgos hacia la población, y sobre
los esquemas de planeación participativa que
podrían coadyuvar a preparar a la población
respecto a la elevación del nivel del mar, los pro-
cesos de erosión costera, y de las afectaciones
al entorno socioeconómico.
La Red Interinstitucional de Cambio Climático
del Sureste de México es un grupo muy intere-
sante de académicos mexicanos que trabajan en
beneficio de la región y buscan aportar a las insti-
solutions. This is the second congress that has
an ample collaboration of national academic in-
stitutions, the first event after 2011 in the UNAM
as part of the works of the Climate Change Pro-
gram of the federal government and the UN.
This event concentrates scientific information
on climate change available in Mexico. In this
2012, the congress was organized by national
regional headquarters, grouping the southeast
states; Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo,
Chiapas and Yucatan.
In this edition of the second Congress, be-
side scientific information, social themes were
addressed, were there is an intervention of
different sectors of the Mexican society. One
of the addressed central themes was the vul-
nerability and adaptation to climate change in
coastal areas.
Regarding this theme within the regional
Gulf of Mexico scale context, the Program of
the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem in
charge of Dr. Porfirio Alvarez, presented the
advances of the Bi-national program Mexico
and United States of America, informing of the
diverse work and conjunct action components
that both nations do in the Gulf of Mexico and
highlighted the bi-national workshops´ results
which have created new regional collaborations
with Mexican and American scientific partici-
pants, as well as with federal and academic in-
stitutions.
Dr. Alvarez addressed coastal vulnerability
and the risks towards the population and the
participative planning schemes that could help
to prepare the population regarding the sea
level rise, coastal erosion processes and the
socioeconomic impacts.

de la Laguna de Terminos, en la Isla del Car-
men, sitio donde también existen instalaciones
estratégicas del sector energético nacional, y
población que queda expuesta a estos fenóme-
nos. En el Puerto de Progreso en el estado de
Yucatán, donde hay evidencia de elevación pau-
latina del nivel del mar y afectaciones por oleaje
mas intenso y afectaciones a los sectores pro-
ductivos establecidos en las costas. Asimismo,
estos fenómenos generan cambios importantes
en las condiciones de los ecosistemas costeros,
como son las lagunas costeras, humedales, ya
que estos se llegan a salinizar y cambian los pa-
trones de circulación, y distribución de la biota
marina con afectaciones a la producción pes-
quera entre otros.
Finalmente los huracanes y otros eventos hi-
drometeorológicos extremos implican riesgos a
la población e infraestructura. Esto representa
un enorme desafío a la sociedad, a la economía
y por lo tanto se debe generar una política públi-
ca con enfoque precautorio.
El Programa del Golfo de México Gran Eco-
sistema Marino se comprometió a mantener una
estrecha colaboración con las instituciones de
la región para fortalecer los trabajos específicos
en las costas del Estado de Yucatán en colabo-
ración con el CINVESTAV para un proyecto de
planeación local en el Municipio de Telchac.

Climate Change is having its effects on the
coasts of Mexico and in particular in various
points of the Peninsula of Yucatan, such is the
case of the coasts of Tabasco, where the oil
infrastructure is of national interest. Along the
coasts of Campeche, where erosion coastal
movements and sea level rise are registered
along the Terminos Lagoon, in Isla del Carmen,
site where there are strategic facilities of the
national energetic sector, and population that is
exposed to these phenomena’s. In the Port of
Progreso in the state of Yucatan, where there
is evidence of a constant elevation of the sea
level, there are affectations because of more
intense waves and to the productive sectors
established on the coasts. These phenomena´s
generate important changes in the coastal eco-
system conditions, such as the coastal lagoons
and wetlands because these salinize and
change their circulation patterns and distribu-
tion of the marine biota with affectations to the
fish production among others.
Finally, the hurricanes and other hydro-mete-
orological events imply risks to the population
and the infrastructure. This represents an enor-
mous challenge to society and to the economy,
so a public policy should be generated with a
precautious focus.
The Gulf of Mexico large Marine Ecosystem
compromised to sustain a close collaboration
with the regions institutions to strengthen spe-
cific works within the coasts of the state of Yu-
catan in collaboration with CINVESTAV for a lo-
cal project being planned in the area of Telchac.

ientíficos y administradores de áreas
marinas protegidas (AMPs) de la re-
gión del Golfo de México se reunieron
para discutir estrategias de fomento a la comu-
nicación, coordinación y colaboración con objeto
de maximizar la eficiencia al abordar temas es-
pecíficos de interés común a las AMPs del Gol-
fo. Como resultado, el desarrollo de un plan para
la implementación de una Red Internacional de
Áreas Marinas Protegidas del Golfo de México
está en marcha entre los Estados Unidos, Méxi-
co y Cuba.

M PA managers from around the Gulf of
Mexico region met to discuss strategies for
Gulf MPAs to increase communication, coordi-
nation and collaboration to maximize efficiency
and effectiveness of addressing targeted issues
of mutual concern to the community. As a re-
sult, the development of an International Gulf of
Mexico Marine Protected Areas implementation

México (CONANP), el Programa GoM LME co-
organizó un taller con objeto de crear una Red
Internacional de AMPs del Golfo de México.
El taller se llevó a cabo del 17 al 19 de julio en
Boca del Río, Veracruz, con la participación de
profesionales de AMPs representativas del Gol-
fo de México, así como con representantes de
agencias de los gobiernos de Estados Unidos,
Cuba y México, quienes intercambiaron expe-
riencias e ideas res-
pecto a la importancia

para que el concepto
de red responda a las

servación a escala re-
gional.
Como resultado de
la reunión se adoptó
un plan de implemen-
tación que servirá
como catalizador para alcanzar un nuevo nivel
de gestión regional de los recursos costeros y
marinos. Los siguientes pasos y esfuerzos se
centrarán en la aplicación de elementos clave
de la recientemente creada red de AMPs del
Golfo de México, tales como el cambio climático,
la respuesta a eventos catastróficos y capacita-
ción/extensión sobre el valor de las AMPs.

ve la identificación de necesidades prioritarias
para mejorar la gestión de las AMPs, herra-
mientas para la comunicación efectiva entre sus
administradores, y parámetros de diseño espe-
cíficos de análisis para maximizar la eficiencia,

As a result of the meeting an implementation
plan that will serve as a catalyst for achieving
a new level of regional ocean and coastal re-
source management was outlined. Next steps
and efforts will focus on implementing the key
elements of the newly created Gulf of Mexico
Regional MPA Plan focusing on managing cli-
mate change, catastrophic event response, and
outreach/training about the value of MPAs.

Durante la Segunda Cumbre del Golfo cele-
brada en Diciembre de 2011, en Houston, Texas;
el Programa GoM LME presentó la idea de crear
el CiiMar-GoM dando a México la oportunidad
de trabajar conjuntamente con científicos esta-
dounidenses en las cuestiones que son una
preocupación común en la región. Esta iniciati-
va permitirá la creación no solo de un marco co-
laborativo entre científicos, también equilibrará
la participación al incluir a instituciones acadé-
micas y de investigación distribuidas en toda la
región del Golfo de México.
Asimismo, el Consorcio promoverá y fortale-
cerá los acuerdos institucionales centrados en la
investigación con mecanismos que favorezcan
la cooperación regional en materia de océanos,
mares y costas.
El Consorcio tendrá las siguientes funciones:

The Gulf of Mexico LME program has been
promoting the creation of networks between
both nations to deeply connect the stakehold-
ers of the region, either by the nature of the ac-
tivities that unite the entire Gulf region or due
to the existing challenges posed by diverse
threats such as climate change, disasters, sea
level rise and other topics that require strong in-
terventions, best use of resources and genuine
collaboration.
During the Gulf Summit held in Houston
Texas in December 2011, the Gulf of Mexico
LME program presented the initiative to cre-
ate CiiMar-GoM, giving Mexico the opportunity
to jointly work with US scientists on issues that
are of common concern in the region. This initia-
tive creates not only a collaborative framework
among scientist but also allows for a wider and
balanced participation with all academic and re-
search institutions distributed along the region.
The Consortium will promote and strengthened
institutional arrangements and focused research,
with mechanisms that favor regional cooperation
on oceans, seas and coastal resources.
CiiMar-GoM will have the following functions:

ses, aimed to catalyze collaborative efforts at the
national and international level. Its main goal will
be based on the premise of a solid academic co-
llaboration to timely attain Gulf´s regional priority
issues. In particular, CiiMar-GoM would work to-
wards the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosys-
tem Strategic Action Program prepared by both
nations.

vances Studies (CINVESTAV for its acronym in
Spanish) Dr. Romeo de Coss Gómez and the
Executive Director of the Lousiana Universities
Marine Consortium (LUMCON), represented by
Dr. Nancy Rabalais, signed the letter of inten-
tion, where the other nine academic and re-

CiiMar-GoM will be joining GOMURC by a

Ambientales del Golfo de Mexico en el
Foro Nacional de Educacion Ambiental para la

L Foro Nacional de Educación Ambien-
tal para la Sustentabilidad con cede

of Environmental Education for

he National Forum for Environmental Educa-
tion and Sustainability, took place in Boca del
Rio, Veracruz, with the participation of a number
of representatives from at least 15 Universities,
Federal and State Institutions, and organizations
from all around the country that in total repre-
sented more than 790 people registered for this
event. The workshop was integrated mainly by
seminars, working tables, posters and general
presentations about different issues related to

tualmente están trabajando en la región. Algunos
asistentes a la reunión eran representantes del CE-
CADESU, CONANP; Gobiernos estatales, Univer-
sidades, y Organizaciones de la Sociedad Civil.
El Dr. Gonzalez Gaudiano, coordinador principal
del Foro Nacional, dio la introducción y bienvenida
al evento dando algunos datos sobresalientes del
Golfo de México, además destacó su importante
posición como un Gran Ecosistema Marino muy
productivo con notorios beneficios económicos

was evident that there is a strong feeling for the
need to increase awareness and professiona-
lize environmental educators to address different
problems through promoting behavior changes
in societies and local communities to make them
more sustainable.
As part of this Forum, the Environmental
Educators Alliance for the Gulf of Mexico, par-
ticipated through an informative meeting were
the objectives, vision, mission of the Alliance,
and activities from different colleagues from the
region were presented. Some attendees were
representatives from the Center for Education
and Training for Sustainable Development (CE-
CADESU), the National Commission for Natural
Protected Areas (CONANP), “Universidad de
Veracruz”, “Universidad Juarez Autonóma de
Tabasco”, civil organizations such as “La Mano
del Mono”, “Amigos y Vecinos del Ambiente y
del Patrimonio Cultural”, amongst others.
Mr. Gonzalez Gaudiano, main coordinator of
the National Forum of Environmental Education
for Sustainability began the meeting with a wel-
coming and expressed remarks about the Gulf
of Mexico and its important position as a produc-
tive Large Marine Ecosystem with outstanding
economic benefits for the region. He pointed out
the need to develop a strong network to work
together in attending important problems that the
region is facing.
Maria de Lourdes Jímenez Badillo, General
Director of the Institute of Marine and Fisheries
Science Institute from the University of Veracruz
gave a welcoming speech and expressed the in-
terest of this University of becoming member of

Tanto el Dr. Gonzalez Gaudiano y la Dr. Jímenez
Badillo mostraron su compromiso con la Alian-
za y mencionaron la necesidad de desarrollar
proyectos como esta red para tener una colabo-
ración conjunta que pueda fortalecer iniciativas
que beneficien a la región.
Durante esta reunión también se discutieron
diferentes actividades en donde el Proyecto
GoM LME ha tenido algún tipo de colaboración.
Fue muy grato también escuchar acerca de di-
versas experiencias exitosas en el trabajo local
con comunidades. Tal es el caso de la Coopera-
tiva Pesquera en Alvarado conocida como “Mu-
jeres Experimentando S.C. de R.L” coordinado
por Blanca Cortina de la Universidad Veracruza-
na. Este proyecto ha permitido desarrollar más
capacidades locales para fortalecer sus econo-
mías a través de actividades sustentables.

pacitación a Organizaciones Rurales del CECA-

ment with the Alliance and mentioned the need

During this meeting different activities were
the GoM LME project has collaborated, were
also discussed, and it was also pleasant to listen
to successful experiences based on local pro-
jects in the region of the Gulf of Mexico. These
projects have used environmental education
strategies to develop local skills within communi-
ties such as the women´s cooperative project in
Alvarado, Veracruz where local capabilities were
increased in order to strengthen their economies
through sustainable activities.
Edith Matinez from CECADESU presented
main results of the training course that was
coordinated by CECADESU and the GoM LME
project was an important partner (February –
September 2012). The course was 50% online
and 50% fieldwork at Patzcuaro, Michoacan and
Cd. Del Carmen, Campeche. Important institu-
tions such as the National Commission for Na-
tural Protected Areas (CONANP), The National
Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), and the Na-
tional Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)
convened during this training course and worked
together in the contents and the logistics. As
a result of this collaboration it was possible to
count with more than 82 participants from local
institutions who are continuously working with
wetlands all around the country.
The objective of the training course was to pro-
vide main elements of the structure, operation,
and dynamic behavior of wetlands, including their

objetivo fue brindar los elementos conceptuales
sobre la estructura, funcionamiento y comporta-
miento dinámico de los humedales y su relación
con el ser humano. Fue mencionada la colabo-
ración que existió con la alianza y la posibilidad
de que estas experiencias puedan ser replicadas
en otros estados de la región. Gracias a este tipo
de colaboraciones fue posible realizar dos sali-
das de campo en Cd. Del Carmen, Campeche y
Pátzcuaro, Michoacán además de contar con la
experiencia de varios especialistas.
Patricia Estrada y Rubén Saidaña presenta-
ron la experiencia del Acuario de Veracruz acer-
ca de la expedición de humedales inter-coste-
ros en Texas y Louisiana en Estados Unidos,
el cual tenia el objetivo de brindar información
y herramientas educativas sobre la importancia
de los hábitats costeros del Golfo, así como la
problemática que enfrentan las costas y los eco-
sistemas costeros de la región. Esta expedición
es un claro ejemplo de los buenos resultados
que se pueden lograr con instituciones estado-
unidenses como es el caso del Gulf of Mexico
Foundation. Finalmente, como parte de los re-
sultados obtenidos se mencionó que se firmará
un memorándum de entendimiento para formali-
zar la relación inter-institucional.
La última presentación fue realizada por la
Directora del Centro de Información y Comuni-
cación Ambiental de Norte América A.C., Margie
Simon de Ortiz bajo el titulo de la Red de Edu-
cadores Ambientales de México, REAMBI. Se
enfocó en explicar en que consiste REAMBI y

gave an introduction of the programs and politics
in charge of its conservation and management.
Finally, Edith Gonzalez explained the collabora-
tion with the Environmental Educators Alliance,
and she also mentioned that this experience
could be replicated in other states of the country.
Patricia Estrada and Rubén Saldaña, presen-
ted the experience of the Aquarium of Veracruz,
the inter-coastal wetlands expedition from Texas
to Louisiana. This expedition was possible thanks
to the excellent collaboration that exists between
the Aquarium of Veracruz and the Gulf of Mexico
Foundation. This educational trip has the main
objective of taking educators on an exploration
and live aboard a vessel up to inter-coastal wa-
terway. This expedition educates participants on
issues facing coastal communities, aiming to ba-
lance both economy and environment. This re-
presents a clear example of successful binational
collaboration from different institutions that could
be replicated through the Alliance.
The last presentation was in charge of Mar-
gie Simon, who introduced the Mexican Environ-
mental Educators Network known as REAMBI
that is coordinated by CICEANA. She explained
how this network works and the registration pro-
cedure. It is possible to create an account to
have free access to the Alliance group. In this

A través de esta RED es posible crear un propio
perfil y tener uno o varios grupos en donde se
puedan planear foros de discusión, intercambiar
experiencias, etc. Actualmente la Alianza ya for-
ma parte de la red gracias a los acuerdos que se
establecieron en reuniones pasadas.
Finalmente, diversas lecciones aprendidas
y casos exitosos de gobierno federal, estatal,
academia, sociedad civil y otros actores, fueron
presentados durante este evento. Es importante
hacer énfasis en que la mayoría de los partici-
pantes están interesados en volverse miembros
de la Alianza de Educadores Ambientales para
el Golfo de México, ya que están conscientes de
la necesidad de identificar y recopilar experien-
cias exitosas de diferentes partes de la región
con la finalidad de replicarlas en otros lugares
del país. La participación activa de los asisten-
tes demostró el interés de establecer este tipo
de redes para vincular investigación de acade-
mia con la sociedad a través de proyectos que
traigan beneficios a comunidades locales. Sin
embargo, será necesario tener claros cuales
son los alcances actuales de la Alianza, y las
acciones necesarias para fortalecerla.

other colleagues working in environmental edu-
cation in the Gulf of Mexico. It will also be possible
to have access to a virtual library. Main results
of this event will be added in this page and in the
project webpage.
Different lessons learned from government,
academy and civil society were mentioned du-
ring this meeting. It is important to point out that
most of the participants are interested in beco-
ming members of the Environmental Educators
Alliance for the Gulf of Mexico, as they are aware
of the need to identify and gather successful ex-
periences from different parts of the region and
seek to replicate them. The active participation
of attendees denoted an interest in establishing
this network in order to link research projects from
academy with society through projects that bring
benefits in local communities. However, it will be
necessary to analyze the scope of the network
and current capabilities to make it stronger.
The main achievements are that more people
are interested in becoming part of the Alliance and
feel committed with this initiative. Nevertheless,
funding remains as an issue to address in order
to continue with the consolidation of the Alliance.
It was also agreed by most of the participants that
it is necessary to develop a formal document that
establishes the formal creation of the Alliance.
