The study comments that people who have been affected or are survivors of a stroke
suffer a significant deterioration in their activities of daily living, instrumental,
occupational performance, independence... due to the relationship between the
pathology and sensory loss or impairment.
Despite the fact that it is a common pathology, the attention offered by the medical
team is quite limited and, consequently, rehabilitation is affected to a large extent.
In order to alleviate this imbalance in the medical field, a study was carried out with
special emphasis on treatment or sensory rehabilitation, since it is an essential factor
for improving the recognition of textures, objects, proprioception, etc.
In this study, 50 people were selected who, as mentioned above, had suffered a
stroke and had sensory impairment. The characteristics of the people selected were
very similar, in terms of age, the hemisphere affected... Within the study, the people
selected were divided into two groups, one was a control group and the other an
experimental group:
The first group, the experimental group, received a more specialized treatment in
sensory discrimination; however, the second group received an intervention more
focused on exposure to sensory stimuli.
In the results of the study, quite noticeable differences could be observed between
them.
The first group had a 36% improvement in sensory discrimination, even after the end
of the study. On the contrary, group two, which was the control group, did not obtain
the same results.
(The evaluations were carried out before and after each intervention, at six weeks
and six months after treatment).
Therefore, and to conclude, the conclusion reached by the study was that
incorporating rehabilitation or training after suffering a stroke improves very
significantly, both in the short and long term. In addition, there is an increase in the
quality of life of these people, since, as mentioned above, they suffer a very negative
impact on ADLs, IADLs, independence...
