LA PRINCESA TRISTE DE SANTA ANA

Dice la leyenda que, hace mucho tiempo, donde hoy se sitúa Guayaquil y el Cerro de Santa
Ana, vivió un acaudalado rey inca. Tenía una hermosa hija que, un día, enfermó
repentinamente.

El rey solicitó la ayuda de brujos y curanderos, pero ninguno pudo sanarla. En cambio, cuando
parecía que no había esperanzas, apareció un hombre que decía tener la cura para la muchacha.

El hechicero le dijo al rey: “Si quieres salvar la vida de tu hija, has de renunciar a todas tus
riquezas”. El rey se negó y mandó a sus guardias a matar al brujo.

Después de la muerte del brujo, una maldición cayó sobre el reino donde se impuso la oscuridad
por años.

Desde entonces, cada 100 años, la princesa tenía la oportunidad de devolver la luz a su reino,
pero nunca lo lograba.

Siglos después, un expedicionario que escaló el cerro, se encontró con la muchacha. Esta le dio
dos opciones: tomar la ciudad llena de oro o elegirla a ella como esposa fiel.

El conquistador eligió quedarse con la ciudad de oro. La princesa, muy enojada, lanzó una
maldición. El joven, asustado, le rezó a la Virgen de Santa Ana para que lo protegiera.

Cuenta la leyenda que por este motivo el Cerro de Santa Ana, sobre el que se fundó la ciudad de
Guayaquil, fue denominado así.

Legend has it that, a long time ago, where Guayaquil and the Cerro de Santa Ana are located
today, there lived a wealthy Inca king. He had a beautiful daughter who, one day, suddenly fell
ill.
The king sought the help of sorcerers and healers, but none could heal her. Instead, when it
seemed hopeless, a man appeared who claimed to have the cure for the girl.
The sorcerer told the king, "If you want to save your daughter's life, you must give up all your
wealth." The king refused and sent his guards to kill the sorcerer.
After the sorcerer's death, a curse fell on the kingdom where darkness prevailed for years.
Since then, every 100 years, the princess had the opportunity to return the light to her kingdom,
but she never succeeded.
Centuries later, an expeditionary who climbed the hill, met the girl. She gave him two options:
take the city full of gold or choose her as his faithful wife.
The conqueror chose to keep the city of gold. The princess, very angry, put a curse on him. The
young man, frightened, prayed to the Virgin of Santa Ana to protect him.
Legend has it that for this reason the Cerro de Santa Ana, on which the city of Guayaquil was
founded, was so named.
