1. Introducción
Durante toda mi vida me ha fascinado el hecho
de que sea tan sencillo crear energía, pero el
problema es que, normalmente, mucha de esta
energía es contaminante y puede perjudicar al
medio ambiente y al planeta donde vivimos. Una
de las principales soluciones a este problema es
la energía renovable.
Siempre me ha interesado el tema de las ener-
gías renovables, pero realmente la que más me
ha llamado la atención siempre es la producida
por las placas solares, que tan solo requieren de
la luz del sol.
De esta forma, mi objetivo de aprendizaje de este
proyecto es aprender a crear una placa solar,
a poder ser con materiales no muy complejos.
Principalmente, el propósito de mi investigación
es aprender a crear energía a través de una placa
solar.
Crearé mi producto final a base de materiales
sencillos, pero, si estos no disponen de la calidad
necesaria, deberé comprar los materiales ade-
cuados para que el resultado final del proyecto
pueda tener la mayor calidad posible. El produc-
to deberá poder crear energía para alimentar a
un diodo led de 1,7 kw.

Mi producto es una placa solar creada mediante
elementos reciclables con la finalidad de poder
crear energía y, a la vez, enseñar a la gente que
debemos dejar de mirar hacia otro lado y empe-
zar a actuar para combatir el cambio climático.
Para realizar un producto final con una gran
calidad, los elementos de los que esté formado
también deben ser los mejores posibles. Por ello
hablé con mi padre, que es ingeniero eléctrico, y
me informó de que el mejor conductor y la mejor
opción para crear energía es mediante cobre.
Otra opción es crear la placa solar a través de
diodos, que van conectados entre sí y crean la
energía. El inconveniente de esta modalidad es
que los diodos no se pueden reciclar y que, para
conseguirlos, se deben comprar.
Teniendo en cuenta la efectividad de la placa so-
lar, voy a crearla mediante el método de diodos
ya que es mucho más eficaz y funcional que con
el otro proceso.
La placa solar consistirá en una base de cartón,
de alrededor de 40x40 cm, que contará con un
soporte en un lateral para unir las conexiones
que llevará. Los diodos que necesitaré son los

Los diodos se juntarán unos con otros y se si-
tuarán creando filas horizontales durante toda
la tabla de cartón. Con un cable unimos todos
los diodos para crear una línea mediante la que
viaje la energía. Finalmente, un capacitador se
unirá al final de la línea formada por diodos y se
podrá conectar al diodo led.
Presentación de la placa solar:
1. El producto vendrá sobre una placa de cartón.
2. En el lateral se encontrará el soporte para ob-
jetos como el capacitador.
3. Los diodos irán cortados tan solo por la parte
superior para que puedan recibir la luz solar
de la mejor forma posible.
4. Todos los diodos irán unidos gracias al derre-
timiento del estaño con un soldador.
5. La parte positiva del capacitador debe estar
colocada en la parte positiva de los diodos. La
parte negativa del capacitador debe ir conec-
tada a través de un cable con la parte negativa
de los diodos.

2. Aplicación de habilidades.
Uno de los factores más determinantes para la
creación de mi proyecto ha sido el desarrollo de
mis habilidades de investigación. Principalmen-
te he investigado sobre el diseño y la elaboración
de una placa solar con materiales sencillos.
He podido realizar diversas habilidades, tanto de
autogestión, investigación, pensamiento y comu-
nicación. He aplicado la habilidad de autogestión
cuando he organizado mi proyecto para que este
sea lo más efectivo y productivo posible. Al co-
mienzo de la creación de mi producto, creé una
planificación a largo plazo con plazos específicos
para cada tarea.
Para comenzar, reflexioné en mi diario de traba-
jo qué preguntas debía formular para la investi-
gación y la producción de mi producto final, para
poder crear una investigación más profunda.
Para poder conocer las respuestas a todas estas
preguntas, utilicé recursos que me ayudaron a
tener las cosas mucho más claras, como la llu-
via de ideas. Estas formas de ayuda para conocer
mejor las respuestas a mis preguntas, también
me ayudaron mucho a la hora de seleccionar y
elegir las fuentes más adecuadas, aquí utilicé la
habilidad de organización.
Cuando comencé el proyecto, iba a crear una pla-
ca solar con materiales más cotidianos creando
una fusión con distintos productos para la crea-
ción de energía, pero este método no era real-
mente eficaz y decidí modificarlo para obtener
una mayor fuente de energía. Cambié la idea del
producto y añadí otros elementos principales
como los diodos o la pequeña luz como objeto
para medir su funcionalidad.
También he aplicado la habilidad de pensamien-
to ya que he debido pensar qué aspectos se de-
berían mejorar sobre la creación de mi producto
o cuáles son las variables que pueden hacer que

este fracase y, por lo tanto, evitarlas. Igualmente,
también he tenido que reflexionar acerca de cuál
es la forma más efectiva para crear una pequeña
energía capaz de alimentar a los objetos.
Otra de las habilidades que utilicé fue la de co-
municación, ya que he tenido que comunicarme
con la supervisora asignada para poder realizar
mejor el proyecto.
Para utilizar todas estas habilidades durante el
transcurso de este proyecto, he tenido que tomar
ciertas medidas para que sean lo más exitosas
posibles, tal como se indica en la siguiente tabla.

La realización del proyecto ha contribuido en gran medida al desarrollo de mis habilidades de
aprendizaje (autogestión, investigación, pensamiento y comunicación) ya que he mejorado

raron mucho más cómo debía realizar el trabajo,
al igual que aclararon cuáles eran los mejores
aspectos de mi placa y cuáles los aspectos que
necesitaban una mejora. La importancia de pro-
fundizar en mi objetivo de aprendizaje no se vio
tan mejorada ya que realicé muy pocas pregun-
tas sobre este tema.
La habilidad de pensamiento ha sido la que me-
nos he llevado a cabo ya que pienso que las otras
deben tener un mayor peso a la hora de realizar
el proyecto. Ha tenido una misma importancia
tanto para la creación del producto como para
la creación del objetivo de aprendizaje. Para la
creación del producto, la habilidad de pensa-
miento me ha ayudado ya que, a la hora de pla-
nificar cada paso en la construcción de la placa
solar, en todo momento he tenido que pensar en
posibles mejoras y posibles fallos que esta podía
tener. Por otro lado, a la hora de profundizar mi
objetivo de aprendizaje también me ha ayudado
ya que he debido pensar en qué aspectos era más
adecuado centrar dicho objetivo y cómo debía
centrarlos.
Finalmente, el aspecto de comunicación me ha
ayudado principalmente en el objetivo de apren-
dizaje, ya que mi supervisora me ha ayudado a
mejorarlo y a corregir posibles errores del pro-
yecto y crear posibles mejoras. En el aspecto de
la importancia para realizar mi producto, esta
habilidad también me ha ayudado ya que, gra-
cias a la correspondencia con mi supervisora, he
podido tener más claro la fiabilidad de mi pro-
ducto y su uso.

4. Reflexión.
Mi proyecto personal ha tratado sobre la crea-
ción de una placa solar a base de materiales reu-
tilizados o comunes. El objetivo de este proyecto
siempre ha sido conocer un poco más sobre el
tema de la energía renovable y la electricidad.
El tema lo elegí porque siempre me ha apasio-
nado el tema de la energía renovable, ya que me
parece una cosa espectacular el simple hecho de
que cosas tan sencillas como el sol sean capaces
de crear algo tan complejo como la electricidad.
Creo que este proyecto podría concienciar a la
sociedad de que debemos innovar, ya que se
pueden hacer cosas muy grandes con elemen-
tos muy sencillos. También pienso que puede
concienciar en gran medida sobre el uso que de-
bemos dar a la energía de la que nos provee la
naturaleza, como es la energía renovable. Este
proyecto me ha servido para conocer en mayor
grado cómo se produce la creación de energía,
los materiales que hacen falta para crearla y la
dificultad que conlleva.
También he adquirido diversas habilidades que
podré usar en un futuro, como son las habilida-
des de investigación que he utilizado para inves-
tigar sobre el tema. De una de las cosas que más
orgulloso me siento es de haber podido crear
energía con materiales tan sencillos y accesibles.
Crear esa energía es algo muy complejo y he
conseguido hacerlo, con un grado de satisfacción
muy alto.
Sin duda alguna, el proyecto me ha beneficiado
principalmente para un aspecto, y este es el cómo
me ha preparado para el futuro. Tras hacer este
proyecto, he decidido decantarme por dedicarme
en un futuro a una ingeniería que esté dedicada
principalmente a la energía, ya que durante todo
el proceso de este proyecto me he percatado de
que es un tema que me encanta y al que me apa-
sionaría dedicarme en un futuro.

 En conclusión, tras finalizar mi proyecto, pue-

engage in practical explorations through a

with an essential opportunity to demonstrate
approaches to learning (ATL) skills developed
through the MYP; and foster the development
of independent, lifelong learners. ”From an

only a way of summarizing all the learning and
skills I had developed during the MYP, but also
an opportunity to challenge myself to push my
limits, and take my learning to another level.

2. Criterion A – Planning
My Topic
I am quite certain that the majority of the
population nowadays would agree that COVID-19
has had a huge impact in many lives around
the world. Whether directly through infection,
or indirectly as changes are made in ways of
schooling, shopping and so on, I believe that
most people would agree that even the smallest
connection to COVID-19 can change lives in
drastic ways. Due to the constant reminder of
this pandemic, we are living in, as well as my
curiosity regarding what exactly a coronavirus
disease is, I chose the topic of my Personal Project
to be “The Changes in a Sick Lung”. I investigated
the impacts of COVID-19 on an infected person
and how a patient’s lungs can change while they
are sick. My inquiry question was: “To what
degree does COVID-19 affect people’s lungs and
why should we be alert?”
Goal, Product and Global Context
My general goal for this project was to research,
analyze and inform the public on the possible
states of one’s lung when infected by COVID-19
thus encouraging society to be careful. In more
detail, I wanted to learn about the impacts of
COVID-19 on an infected person and how a

patient’s lungs can change while they are sick.
I planned to investigate using medical data, and
to raise awareness about self-care and following
safety precautions by giving readers an accurate
representation of the effects COVID-19 has on
lungs.
In order to meet my learning goal, I decided on
a product goal that consisted of two parts. The
first was a research paper with all my research,
explaining what COVID-19 is and giving a
professional written tone and possibly add a
glossary for medical terminology. By doing this,
I planned to raise awareness for COVID-19 and
possibly help future students in their research.
In the process of developing my paper, I had
to understand medical explanations about the
impact of COVID-19 on lungs and how they
specifically affect body strength, movement
and respiration. I also needed to understand
the correct medical terms when needed and
consider how the impact may be different
depending on age groups, ethnicity and gender.
Another vital piece of information I required
was what lungs look like and how they function,
so that I could make the models as accurate as
possible and achieve my goal at the end. The
second part of my product would be two models,
one of healthy lungs and one infected with
COVID-19. The goal of this part of my product
was to draw attention and make it easier for
the audience to understand the difference. I
planned on making the models out of whatever
resources I have available at the time, as long as
they looked accurate and helped people better
understand the impact of COVID-19.
A key concept during the process of making
my final product is my chosen global context. I
chose the global context Scientific and Technical
Innovation because I think it goes very well with
my investigation about lungs. My project was
all about health, and therefore, biology as stated
before. I also believe it could relate to technical

innovation since doctors and scientists around
the world have used technology to analyze
COVID-19 patients, and make new discoveries
– such as the newly developed vaccines, each
day. Further on, COVID-19 is an extremely fast
spreading and evolving virus, meaning that
various scientific discoveries and innovations
are made every day to ensure that society is as
prepared and safe as possible.
What Makes My Project Personal
Although I am blessed in the sense that I have
never had COVID-19, I have grown up with
asthma and bronchitis. From when I was a
baby, I have had considerably severe asthma
and even pneumonia at times. I’ve had to stay
in the hospital, and have had trouble breathing
many times. This made me question whether or
not having COVID-19 feels similar, and if not,
what it feels like. My motivation, therefore, was
learning and helping others understand what
it feels like to have COVID-19, and hopefully
alerting society to be careful. This topic also
relates to community and lifelong learning as
COVID-19 is a current issue in society, which
is still impacting lifestyle and health in most
countries around the globe. This makes the
topic of lung sickness and COVID in general
very relatable and important to modern day
society. Moreover, my goal of writing a research
paper and researching strongly relates to my
interests, since I really enjoy studying and
writing informational essays. By researching,
organizing the information and putting it
together in written form, I was improving and
practicing my communication and research
skills. I also planned to, as I said, improve my
analysis and summary skills, which can be very
useful in DP and in my future studies.

Prior Learning > > Transfer Skills
Due to the fact that I had never learned about the
respiratory system at school until this year, and I
didn’t know much about lungs, many wondered
why I would choose this topic. I chose this topic
because of the spreading COVID-19 virus. I had
read articles, watched documentaries, and heard
many stories from close friends, and even family
in Brazil, about what COVID-19 is and how it
impacts health. I knew that our lungs are one
of the primary organs in the respiratory system,
I was aware of the general effects of COVID on
people, and also knew from experience what it
feels like to have trouble breathing. Therefore, I
had quite a lot of general background knowledge,
and a strong desire to learn more, so I wanted
to delve deeper and discover the medical and
scientific reasons behind this virus.
This is one way in which I could apply and
strengthen my thinking skills, specially focusing
on transfer skills. Taking all my knowledge from
biology class, as well as from any conversations
I have had with relatives and friends with
COVID can reflect the strand of applying skills
and knowledge in unfamiliar situations and
comparing conceptual understanding across
multiple subject groups and disciplines. The
learning goal I had set for myself was a great
chance to develop this particular skill, and
understand when transferring knowledge is
helpful, as well as when it is misleading if used
in the wrong circumstances.

Developing Appropriate Success Criteria
From the perspective of an IB student just
beginning Year 11, I found it useful to compare
the MYP Personal Project to the design cycle.
As learned in design classes in the past,
specifications are a key part of developing a
product. Design specifications ensure that a
product meets both the essential and desirable
aspects, which in this case would be the
requirements of the IB according to my product
goal. With this in mind, I first developed product
specifications in my mind, and recorded my first
draft of criteria as bullet points.
These were my initial criteria:
1. Clearly shows a difference in the lungs
before and after COVID, giving reasons and
explanations when needed.
2. Includes detailed research results and
medical data to support arguments and
inform the public.
3. Excellently communicates the importance of
health and the necessity of following safety
precautions.
4. Research paper is well structured and
organized in a logical manner.
5. Frequently make direct connections with the
global context and topic.
As time went by, I realized that according to the
personal project criteria, I needed my product
success criteria to be a lot more detailed. This
was an improvement I made during my project,
as adding more strands and following the IB
rubric format gives a clear point of reference that
qualifies specific levels. My rubric consists of two
individual criteria, which divide my project into
the sections of: Lung model and research paper
(assessing the level of achievement of my product
goal, and its social impact), and report and link
back to concepts. Hence my final success criteria
which can be seen below:

Developing A Plan > > Organization Skills
Being the eager-to-learn person that I am, I was
able to develop my plan very early on in the process
of doing my personal project. Before beginning
classes at school, I had already developed a
chronogram spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel to
display an overview of my planned deadlines and
actual deadlines for specific parts of my project.
My plan generally included 5 separate parts:
Research, Lung Models, Research Paper,
Presentation and Report. My first priorities had
been to start researching, by visiting a range
of online sources and books recommended
by experts (such as my science teachers, and
family doctors). I planned to take brief notes on
a Microsoft Word document in form of bullet
points, and then separate them under headings

and sections that I could use from my report.
When most of my research was done, I planned
to re-write my notes in paragraph form, as well as
include in-text citations when needed. According
to my chronogram, this first part of my project
would last all the way until my exhibition, as
writing a paper in a hurry is never a good idea.
After a few weeks working on my research and
paper, my plan was to begin designing my lung
models, by interviewing my design teacher and
my uncle (lung specialist) to set specifications and
start developing sketches. This process overall
included research and inspiration, sketching
and improving, making prototypes, and finally
developing my product outcome. I had expected
this process to take four weeks, when truly it was
the longest part of my personal project.

The last two sections of my plan – as seen in my
chronogram, were developing a grading system
and planning a presentation for a given audience.
I expected this process to be short, and I planned
to make a rubric according to my criteria, which
would allow my audience to rate the product and
its effectiveness. Finally, the last step of my project
would be writing the report. I planned to do this
by combining all the information I had developed
in other documents, such as my criteria, my
action plans, my learning and product goals and
so on. Since I would already have most of the
information ready, I gave myself two weeks to
complete my report. After finishing my project, I
can say that I was extremely lucky to have been
advised to start my report early.
More than halfway through my project, I faced
another realization. It would have been better for
me to have a reflection/completion column on
my table so that I could refer to ATL skills and
the overall assessment criteria more frequently.
This would have helped me reflect on every
week’s progress, and my growth as a student.
Due to the lack of time, I decided to make small
modifications to my process journal, and write
a personal reflection as often as possible in the
document itself.

After starting my personal project lessons,

however, I received comments and feedback
from a few teachers suggesting a weekly action
plan to keep for myself. That would ensure that
I had straightforward and detailed planning,
while also keeping track of time. I therefore
made another improvement to my project,
which consisted of structuring weekly action
plans with strands and detailed explanations
using a table on Microsoft Excel. Hence the table
below showing my weekly plan for the months of
November through to January.

3. Criterion B – Applying Skills

3.1 Connection to Learning Goal

As mentioned, my learning goal was to research,
analyze and inform the public on the possible
states on one’s lung when infected by COVID-19
by encouraging society to be careful. I believe that
this aim opened up possibilities of development
in my research skills, communication skills,
and reflection skills. In order to achieve my
learning goal, I needed to read and utilize a wide
range of sources to ensure reliable information,
while also considering my tone of writing, and
the effect it would have on my audience. At the
same time, I also had to constantly reflect on
my progress to distinguish which skills I had
mastered, such as finding sources, or taking
detailed notes, as well as the skills I needed to
improve.

3.2 Research – Information Literacy Skills >>

Research & Data Collection
Research and data collection were not only a
key part of developing my product, but it was
the main step in which I could achieve my
learning goal. In order to accomplish my aim
of understanding more about what COVID-19 is
and how it can be prevented, it was absolutely
crucial that I did a lot of research. By applying
prior knowledge in subjects like biology and
history, I was quick to make use of various
media to ensure reliability in my research. This
meant that I not only utilized online sources,
but I also contacted relatives that know about
this topic, and created a survey which I sent to
professionals to confirm all my findings. Creating
a survey in different languages truly allowed me
to explore more areas of information literacy,
and it pushed me out of my comfort zone, as it
required a lot of analysis and summarizing. An

Through this process, I was able to focus
on the strands of collecting and analyzing
data to identity solutions (identifying
which preventions methods were most
relevant), processing data and report results
(summarizing and organizing my survey results
to draw conclusions for my research paper),
and constructing a bibliography according to
recognized conventions (applying previous
knowledge on APA format, and Origin-
Purpose-Values-Limitations tests). My research
bibliography is exemplified in the picture below.
However, as I got closer to finishing my products,
I realized that keeping record of my thoughts
helped me remember which improvements to
make, and how I could change the way I was
writing or painting to achieve my learning goal
of impacting the general public. When referring
back to the ATL skill table, I can confidently
say that I have found myself improving in areas
of self- management skills that I hadn’t yet
perfected. Since I am a reasonably organized
person, the strands which I most improved on
included identifying strengths and weaknesses
of personal learning strategies, and of course,
keeping a journal to record reflections. Writing
journal entries demonstrated my flexibility as I
adjusted to different environments, as well as my
eagerness to act on feedback after checkups. An

3.3 Self-Management - Reflection Skills >>

Journal and Weekly Reflection
Apart from research, I was also able to reflect
on how effective my product was in regards to
achieving the learning goal by being eligible to
the general audience, and encouraging society
to take COVID-19 precautions. I was able to
develop my reflection skills, therefore, through
my process journal. Making the decision to
include weekly reflections in my process journal
instead of my action plan seemed risky at first.

3.4 Connection to Product Goal
The ATL skills I chose to focus on also tie in very
well with my product goal of creating a 3D lung
model, as well as a research paper. Throughout
the process of achieving my product goal, I was
able to develop my communication skills as I
challenged myself to express my learnings using
different media, self-management skills since I
had to be time-managed enough to finish both
products on time, as well as other skills such
as critical thinking while considering different
sources of information, or even social skills as
I listened carefully to my supervisors’ critiques
and accepted negative feedback. I have grown a
lot through the course of making these products.

niques I had learned from my teachers. I had to
constantly think of paraphrasing, in-text citations,
organizing my research paper logically, as well as
the tone or purpose of my writing. This high ex-
pectation I set for myself was an encouragement,
and really helped me understand which areas of
my communication skills (specially reading and
writing) I had already mastered, and which ones

3.4.1. Communication Skills >> Developing a

Research Paper
As previously stated, writing my research paper
allowed me to further refine my skills in writing
reports. Although writing is one of my strongest
skills, I wanted to expand my techniques to ensure
better results in future written essays and tasks in
DP and college later on. I also wanted to focus on
my audience, and make use of scientific/medical
language while also making my paper interesting
and understandable. First, developing a research
paper required that I read critically in order to
comprehend medical vocabulary and terminol-
ogy related to COVID-19. While this was not too
hard a challenge, it allowed me to expand my vo-
cabulary and knowledge in the subject of biology,
which may be very useful in my next few school
years. After finishing my research, I had to com-
bine all my findings to draw a final conclusion.
It was important that I had a detailed picture in
my mind of what my research paper would look
like before writing it, and because of this, I was
able to develop a part of my language compre-
hension skills. Perhaps the area which I practised
the most during the process of writing this paper,
however, was literacy skills. In order to display
all my learnings both in this project, and in the

3.4.1 Research - Media Literacy Skills >>
Printing a 3D Lung Model
The second half of my product goal consisted of a
3D lung model, which would show the difference
between a normal, healthy human lung, and a
COVID-19 lung. My aim was to be as realistic as
possible with the models, while making them
easy to understand so that my audience could
truly learn from my exhibition. With this part of
my product, I was able to experiment a lot with
different media and ways of creating models. In
addition to creating prototypes and asking for
guidance from my design teacher, I also found it
important to conduct research about the values
and limitations of using different materials. For
instance, one of the designs I considered, and

even attempted to make, was a lightbox. I had
planned to make a lightbox with a general lung
diagram, and add on flashcards that would show
the effect of different diseases on the lung. After
creating this model, however, I quickly realized
that it was not very gaudy, as well as being too
fragile. This would not interest my audience, and
it would perhaps be too small to show the actual
difference, which was my main goal. Through
this whole process, I developed my media literacy
skills, especially in terms of understanding the
impact of media representations and modes of
presentation. I then adapted my design to a 3D
printed model, and created my final product. My

4. Criterion C – Reflecting
4.1 Impact of the Project on my Learning
Reflection on ATL Skills as an IB Learner
In addition to developing certain ATL skills, the
process of achieving my learning and product
goals allowed me to grow as an IB learner.
When thinking of the ten IB Learner Profiles,
I can proudly say that a few of them struck out
to me as traits that I have improved during this
process. Being principled, knowledgeable and
reflective are the three main traits I developed.
I had to constantly consider whether or not
I was being academically honest, as well as
ensuring that my sources were cited correctly.
I also constantly analyzed my strengths and
weaknesses to ensure that my products were
made to the best of my ability, all while acquiring
new information about COVID-19 and enlarging
my understanding of the disease. I think having
developed these learner profiles will not only
be useful for research/individual work projects
like this, but also for any type of group work or
assignment in the future.
4.2 Evaluation of Knowledge & Understanding
As I began investigating and working on this
project, I slowly realized how much prior
knowledge and experience I already had. What
I thought would be a very extensive search
about COVID-19 turned out to be solidifying
my assumptions and society’s rumors about the
effects and treatments of the disease. This was
therefore one of the strengths I had going into this
project, as my background knowledge was more
developed than I had expected. Another advantage
that I had included experience in writing reports
in subjects like physics or history, which helped
me know how to structure and effectively manage
my written product. In regards to ATL skills, I was
able to apply my skills in self- management to
make sure that I could learn and progress faster.

This is not at all saying, however, that I didn’t
have challenges or new learnings in this process.
The first challenge I had as I started learning
about the topic of COVID-19 was understanding
medical terminology. Although I had learned
some vocabulary in biology class, understanding
names for different diseases and symptoms was
one of my weak points. As I noticed this challenge,
I began to create a glossary by taking notes on a
Microsoft Word document to ensure that I could
have easily accessible definitions of certain words
to use during my future reading. This turned out to
be a very effective solution, as I not only began to
understand articles better, but I also memorized
part of this new vocabulary. Another challenge
that I had was creating my lung model, as my
resources and time were limited. This, however,
taught me to deal with setbacks and become
more flexible. A final challenge I had during
this learning process was knowing the extent
to which information was factual or debatable.
Since COVID-19 is still a mystery to uncover,
many articles include false assumptions or facts
that are extremely controversial. This made my
research and understanding process a lot more
complicated, as I had to ask my uncle or biology
teacher whether or not certain statements were
correct. This also helped me develop the habit of
checking the reliability of my sources, therefore
strengthening and building upon my previous
learning.
This project has been very beneficial to me
throughout this year. It allowed me to more
extensively comprehend the world I am living
in today, as well as to be better informed on my
responsibilities as a citizen in this battle against
COVID-19.

4.3 Evaluation of Product Outcome
Personal Reflection
My written product came together a lot
better than I had imagined. By following my
teachers’ advice and using reliable sources, I
was successfully able to summarize all my
findings with my own words, and accomplish
the goal of making this crucial information about
COVID-19 understandable to the general public.
Referring back to my criteria, I would grade
my written product a seven or an eight out of
eight. I was able to successfully develop a well-
organized research paper, make complete
use of APA referencing and highlight and
justify the effects of COVID-19 as well as
precaution methods. I am proud of this part of
my product, and I believe it will make an impact
in my community. The picture below shows the

On the contrary, the process of developing the
second half of my product was challenging. I
faced certain family matters, involving travel and
donating our belongings, which led to a lack of
materials for me to finish my lung model. While
my original plan was to have two models with
labels and color differences, my reality was that
due to personal issues, I had a great amount of
time and resources taken away. This resulted
in a single model without labels. By comparing
my final lung product to the criteria that I had
designed, and the expectations I had for myself, I
would grade my lung model within the 5-6 band.
Although I was effectively able to display the
changes between a healthy and sick lung, a
lot of explanation and pointing out was required
during the presentation I led to Year 11 students.
Thus, not meeting the 7-8 band strand of clearly
showing these differences. The reason that my
mark for the model is average, however, is that

the model is realistic and accurate, and allows
me to explain the different parts affected
by COVID-19, which was the main goal in the
first place. This perfectly aligns with the 5-6 band
descriptions in the strand ii. The picture below

Looking back, a possible change that I could have
made during the process of creating my model
was to simplify the task instead of hoping I would
achieve it. Due to travelling, and COVID-19, my
family did not have as many resources available.
Instead of developing a plan B and designing a
digital model, or a paper model, I chose to wait
and hope I would have time later. By creating a
plan B, I would have been more time-managed,
and possibly had a better outcome. Overall, I
am satisfied with how my lung model turned
out considering all the setbacks I faced. I was
successfully able to present my findings to my
class group, and I believe that the model was still
a useful tool to have.

present my project in front of my year group and
teachers in an oral presentation accompanied by

2. Criterion B
Halfway through the project, I realized that I
could get a lot more out of it by making something
more concise and focused on the topic, rather
than having half of my website give background
information. I also decided to start a petition
directed towards the Afghan government,
because this could allow me to help more if it
gained traction.
Communication
For the communication aspect, I made a survey
once I finished my project to ask several people
what they thought about my project, and asked
them what could be improved, their opinion,
and also to rate it out of 8. Improving my project
would allow me to keep researching and learn
more things, so I really wanted to know how
other people thought that this could be better.

criterion C section.

2.1 Applying skills to my learning:

Organization
For the organization aspect, I have not only made
an action plan (shown in criterion A), but I have
also always kept track of what I was doing and
did most of the things on time. I did this through
a personal work journal that I have been keeping
since the first day. I figured that this way I would
be able to work out everything much better and
it proved to be very useful when making my
project.

I also made sure to use reliable sources, and

while I came across some other, less reliable
sources, I only used the ones that I could verify.

Before I started my actual project, I did some
investigation and evaluated the sources I found
using the CRAAP Test. The CRAAP Test is a
source-checking test that evaluates sources on
5 criteria: their Currency (How recent is this
source?), Relevance (How relevant is this source
to my investigation?), Accuracy (Does it reference
its sources? Are they reputable?), Authority (Who
was this written by? Are they an expert in their
field?), and Purpose (What is the purpose of the
writer/writing platform this source is published
on? Do they have personal interests at play?).
Below we can see two of the sources evaluated.
I also did this for all of them, but I only put two

Affective
I applied my affective skills by, during the making
of the project, asking other people what could be
improved. This was especially useful because it
allowed me to improve all criteria, especially the
aesthetic one, as we can see in this email from
someone who was knowledgeable in website
making suggesting that I alter the color scheme
of my project to a more muted tone to highlight
the information more and to add all of my posts
in the layout.
Transfer
Throughout the making of this project over
what was essentially three months, I got the
opportunity to participate in both class debates
and extracurricular ones (such as the CICAE-
UCJC debate league) talking about the topic
of Afghanistan, and although none of them
specifically talked about the education of women,
it was brought up several times. Preparing
for these debates also helped me gain more
background knowledge on the overall situation
so that I could focus more on women’s education
in the country. This is a document with the
context for the question given to us in the CICAE-
UCJC debate league.

3. Criterion C:
To explain the impact that this had on me, I divided
the project into three stages: Inquiry, Action, and
Reflection. The first one is the investigation phase
before beginning the product; The second is the
making of the product; The last is the reflection
upon the product.
Inquiry: At this stage, I knew little to nothing
about this kind of situation. I had no idea what
was really going on in Afghanistan, and I had
been told about it so much on such a superficial
level that, to be honest, I’d lost most of my
interest in it. I chose this topic before that, so I
lost motivation pretty early on, but thanks to my
Action I was able to regain it.
Action: This was perhaps the most important
part of the project for me. At this point I was very
demotivated; I didn’t want to even start doing
my product and I hated my personal project
because I thought the topic was overdone. I was
very burnt out, having talked about Afghanistan
on 3 different subjects and in 2 separate debates.
Thankfully, once I got to it, I really enjoyed
making the website and learning more, because
even though I’d talked about Afghanistan a lot, I
had no information on the impact this had had
on women’s education since people are focusing
more on the humanistic side (I do not intend to
belittle this part of the conflict in any way, shape,
or form. I simply intend to highlight how, in my
experience, while women’s rights have been
brought up multiple times, their education was
never a main point of focus). Not only this, but
because I had had to do so much research for
other things with the same topic, I ended up with
a lot of previous background and context.
Reflection: This was my least favourite part.
It was lengthy, dull, and overall, very stressful.
However, I really liked the opportunity to reflect
on myself and my project. While this was the part

that I enjoyed the least, I think it was also the
one that had the biggest impact on me because
it allowed me to collect all of my thoughts and
summarize everything that I had learned. I think
I would’ve forgotten a lot of the things I wrote
were it not for this part.
Progress made towards my learning goal: I
have managed to learn a lot about not only the
situation in Afghanistan (which I also learned a
lot about on the side because it had been given
so much visibility) but also the after-effects
it has had on women, especially young girls
in Afghanistan (albeit I realized that it also
worked for women trying to study for college
or university). I am very happy with everything
this project has taught me as it has also made
me more aware of situations like this when a
country is being taken over and can’t fight back.
A similar situation would be what happened in
Iraq, although it is more similar to Afghanistan
in the sense that they both involved a military
invasion on behalf of the US.
Progress as a result of my product: Thanks to
my product, I have been able to raise awareness
of the situation in Afghanistan. Not only did I
learn a whole new variety of things, but I also
have a big sense of self-satisfaction knowing that,
in times of crisis, I tried to do my best with the
resources I had.
What impact has my project made on the
world? My project was able to amass over a
thousand signatures, meaning that I was able to
gain a lot of attention from it.

How will this help me in the future? Not only
did I learn a range of different, very important
skills, but I also saw the more humanitarian
side of war. Before, when I thought about war,
I only saw the military and financial sides, and
the humanitarian ones on a much smaller scale.
I knew people suffered the consequences of
military occupation, but I didn’t exactly know to
what extent. Now, looking forward, I will make
sure to empathize more with people suffering
from wars. Not only this but a project so focused
on the global community and education could
help me greatly to widen my scope of knowledge
and for other institutions to recognize me as a
well-rounded person.
What other skills have I learned? I have
learned more about making a website and
starting a petition. These are both things I knew
very loosely about, and now I am better at them
and I can use them in future projects. I have also
learned more about global politics in general,
which can prove to be very useful for things
such as debates or any projects requiring basic
background GP knowledge.
I also further developed several ATL skills, which
are briefly explained below.
Research: Previous to this project, I used to
believe that research was something you could
do over a couple of days, but now I understand
so much more. I know how to evaluate sources
thanks to the CRAAP test, I know where to look
and how to cite. Overall, I am very happy with
my progress in this area.
Self-Management: This area only changed
slightly, as my self-management was admittedly
not the best. I missed two deadlines, got very
stressed about this project, and overall did not
enjoy this aspect of the ATL skills. However, I did
make a good action plan and (mostly) followed it,
pushed through even with large periods of stress

due to exams and things of the sort, and was
overall able to manage myself quite well. I have
learned from my mistakes but unfortunately,
I don’t think that this is enough to significantly
improve my self-management.
Social: I was able to develop this through the
exchange of feedback, as can be seen in the
email in the Affective under my skill application
section of this document. I received appropriate
feedback, and overall communicate very well
(linked to the next skill). Along with Thinking, I
think I performed best in this skill.
Communication: This was also one of my best
ATL skills since I really needed to talk to other
people about my project because it required a
lot of “viewer participation” (especially for the
petition). It links closely with Social, although
Communication also stood out in my talking with
my supervisor. I believe I went to him every time
I needed help and that helped me a lot, especially
in the making of my product. Before I wasn’t
really good at communication, but this personal
project has definitely improved that.
Thinking: I was able to greatly improve
my thinking process thanks to this project,
because not only did it help me think about the
information I was getting but also the people in
the sources I saw. The young girls I quoted, who
were all too scared to keep learning and further
their education.
These were the three IB attributes I thought I
developed/described my project the best.
Open-minded: I have shown to be open-
minded while writing this website. Afghanistan
is a country that is very culturally different from
Spain, the country I grew up in, and I avoided
touching on controversial topics or culturally
clashing topics (except for education, which was
the main focus of my project). If any religious

references were made, they were only for the
purpose of showing that the Taliban’s policies
only enforced Islamic education and not general
education.
Caring: I have shown empathy for the people
suffering in Afghanistan and, trying my best to
be respectful, was able to raise awareness of
their situation, hoping that they’ll get out of it
as soon as possible and doing my best to help
with the resources currently available to me. I
am obviously not able to do much, but I have
shown caring throughout the entire process of
this project.
Thinker: I have shown critical thinking skills
by not only reflecting on the situation but also
by helping come up with everyday solutions for
people like me who aren’t really able to directly
influence the situation from their homes because
they have no real diplomatic/military power, as
they are just average people. Through the use
of this skill, I have also been able to encourage

Here I have made a table compiling all of the re-
sults sent in from the survey I did at the end of my
project to get feedback and evaluate my criteria.
As we can see, most people rated an 8 on every
criterion, with 10+ people voting 8 for the Aes-
thetic and Function criteria. The second most vot-
ed choice would be a 6-6-7-7. My personal rating
for my PP would be an 8-6-7-8 since I believe that
is what best fits into my criteria requirements.
My project’s main strength is the function crite-
ria, since not only was that one the best-rated,
but when asked about the impact of the project
on the awareness of the situation, most ranged
anywhere from 1-10 prior to reading, while 9-10
were the main answers after reading the website.
I do however believe that a bit more information
might have been very useful. If I had to repeat
this project all over again, I would use a differ-
ent website maker (WordPress would’ve proba-
bly been the one), add more information and try
to find someone with contacts in Afghanistan for
me to interview them, to offer a more personal
perspective on the matter.

an organic and formal aesthetic that gives the
reader the feeling of offering reliable sources.
However, I am missing a more creative point
that situated the reader at a geographical and
cultural level.
- Audience. It offers information in a correct
and structured way, but it is true that in some
points I need more information.
- Extension. It offers key information that
situated the target audience but, more
bibliographical research and testimonies (if
possible) of these realities are lacking.
- Function. From my point of view, this is the
closest aspect to the 7-8 range because it
really fulfils its function, understanding the
key elements that you want to transmit to the
public.
As we can see, the main issue was the information.
There were also comments on how engaging the
website was and the mobile adaptation. However,
this last one was an issue I could not solve given
the nature of WIX.
I believe that my success criteria ended up being
adequate to the nature of the project, given that,
although the main answer was 8-8-8-8, there
were a variety of answers ranging mostly from
6-8 on all criteria, demonstrating that my project
was accurate, but the criteria weren’t easy
enough to always get 8 on all criteria.
Overall, I am very pleased with how this project
came out, and everything that I have gained
from it. I hope that I am given the opportunity
to work on things like this more in the future
and sincerely hope that this website was able to
reach at least one person, because all it takes is
for one person to begin spreading the word, and
more will soon follow.

Objetivo de aprendizaje
Al comenzar mi proyecto personal, no tenía muy
claro de qué quería que se tratase ya que hay un
gran número de cosas que me interesan. Sin em-
bargo, finalmente elegí relacionarlo con la cos-
mética, ya que últimamente era un tema que me
interesaba mucho y basar mi proyecto en ello me
pareció una buena idea ya que además haría al
proyecto más desafiante.
La cosmética me interesa tanto ahora por lo re-
lacionada que está con la ciencia, sobre todo con
la química, que es una asignatura que disfruto
mucho estudiando. Dentro de la cosmética existe
una amplia variedad de productos, pero los que
más me gustaban eran los brillos de labios. La
cantidad de tonalidades distintas de color que
hay y las propiedades tan beneficiosas que pue-
den tener algunos en los labios es algo que cap-
taba mucho mi atención. Por ello quise aprender
más sobre este producto de cosmética al igual
que quería investigar en todo el trabajo que tiene
detrás el negocio de ese producto. Por todo ello
mi objetivo de aprendizaje es lograr saber cómo
hacer cosméticos éticamente responsables y sa-
ber cómo funciona un negocio sobre ellos.

Lo que quiero conseguir con mi objetivo de
aprendizaje es adquirir las habilidades necesa-
rias para poder crear una tienda en la que vender
mi propio brillo de labios. Al tener claro de qué
se iba a tratar, definí a través de qué plataforma
quería crear mi tienda y los ingredientes nece-
sarios para el producto, incluyendo desde los
aspectos más estéticos como el sabor y el color,
a los aspectos del beneficio que estos brillos de
labios deben aportar.
Criterios de logro del producto
Al crear los niveles de logro que debía cumplir mi
producto, definí seis categorías. En las primeras
dos categorías lo que quería conseguir era ser ori-
ginal y tener mucha diversidad para así llamar la
atención de la gente y que fuera más probable que
compraran mi producto. Las dos siguientes cate-
gorías se refieren más al impacto del producto y si
es positivo o no. Me resultaban importantes estos
dos criterios porque el número de ventas y el fe-
edback son pruebas de si ha tenido éxito o no. El
siguiente criterio se centra en la presentación del
producto, también es crucial ya que, si no genera
una buena impresión, la gente no lo comprará. A
continuación, al tratarse de un negocio, añadí un
criterio basado en el beneficio que se conseguía
de las ventas. Por último, el criterio referente a los
beneficios físicos que aporta el brillo de labios ya
que es importante que no solo ofrezca un color
más bonito, sino que también cuide los labios.

Para saber cómo hacer cosméticos éticamente responsables y saber cómo funciona un
negocio, he tenido que aplicar habilidades de investigación. Concretamente las tres que
he utilizado son: establecer conexiones entre diversas fuentes de información; obtene ry
analizar datos para identificar soluciones y tomar decisiones fundadas , y localizar, organizar,
analizar, evaluar, sintetiza r y utiliza r, de manera ética , información procedente de diversas
fuentes y medios (incluidas redes sociales y en línea). Cuando empecé mi investigación, la
dividí en tres partes, una se enfocaba en la parte del negocio, otra en la parte de la salud (qué
ingredientes usar que sean beneficiosos para los labios) y la última parte en la ética (la
crueldad animal, ingredientes que no esté n testados en animales) y elaboré un pequeño plan

Goals and Motivation

Throughout the few months this project lasts I I decided that I wanted to create a videogame
hope to learn about a variety of different things because I’ve always liked working with

Introduction
At   the   beginning  of  this  Project,  I  created  a  Task  Timeline.  This  timeline  outlined  the  tasks  I
predicted I’d have to complete to create my product and  was composed  of 12 different tasks

Task  1:  Deciding  Game  Type

Applying Skills
Introduction
At the beginning of this Project, I created a
Task Timeline. This timeline outlined the tasks
I predicted I’d have to complete to create my
product and was composed of 12 different tasks
spread throughout 15 weeks, starting in early
October, and finishing in the Second week of
January. Within this section of the report, I will be
explaining each individual task, what it included,
the steps it took to carry it out and finally how it
relates to the IB Approaches to Learning and the
skills from the latter.
Task 1: Deciding Game Type
Thinking Evaluating Issues, Developing
Arguments
This first task was to decide the Game Type.
Although this seems quite easy, there are many
parts to this. For starters, I had to choose what
dimension I wanted my game to be in. Unity
offers many options, including 2-Dimensional
Games, 3-Dimensional Games, Virtual Reality
games and much more. However, seeing as
I had never developed a videogame before I
decided to narrow it down to 2-Dimensional
(2D) and 3-Dimensional (3D). To decide how
I wanted to make my game, I decided to note
down some similarities and differences between
each, thus utilising several of the skills in the
thinking approach to learning. By creating a list
containing the pros and cons I was developing
arguments in favour and against of both, whilst
evaluating the issue at hand. Doing this helped
me reach a better decision, and I finally ended
up deciding to make a 2D game, primarily
because it was easier to learn for beginners,
and as someone with no previous experience in

programming or game development this was a
very important aspect.
The skills utilised to carry out this task were
very helpful for the creation of the Game Design
Document, thus relating to Criterion A of the
Product Success Criteria, and it helped me reach
my learning goal as I learnt about some of the
decisions that had to be taken before the creation
of the game, and in the planning of said game.
Below are some of my notes, which serve as
evidence of me actually carrying this task out.
The information that can be found there was
sourced from various websites such as Melior
Games’1, a Game Development Outsourcing that
specialises in both 2D and 3D games and with
over 120 games published, and from official Unity
Game Development Engine Documentation2.
Task 2: Deciding Scripting Language
Thinking Evaluating Issues, Developing
Arguments
This second task at hand was to decide what kind
of Scripting Language I wanted to use. As someone
who has never programmed anything before,
I had to choose a Language that I considered
valuable and that would work well with Unity.
Following some research, I narrowed it down to
two options: C#, the native language that comes
with Unity’s Game Development Engine, or Bolt,
a Visual scripting language that allows the user

to create code by connecting nodes (allowing for
the creation of a game without writing a single
line of code)3. To decide which Language I’d end
up using, I decided to follow a similar method
to the one used in the previous task. I created
a Venn Diagram to evaluate the issue at hand,
and to develop arguments against and for each
and to see some similarities, thus applying the
thinking approach to learning.
The creation of this Venn Diagram allowed me to
have a better idea on how I was going to complete
the strands in Criterion C of the Product Success
Criteria, which is composed of the scripting
component of the product. It also allowed me to
further my knowledge on scripting, bringing me
closer to the Learning Goal of learning how to
code and script games.

Task 3: Learning How to Script
Research Develop Long Term Memory

This third task was to learn how to script. At
first, this task might seem quite broad and
encompassing a great variety of topics; impossible
to learn how to do all this in just 2 weeks. However,
this wasn’t as complicated as it sounds.
It is my belief that the best way to learn how to
do something is by actually doing it by yourself,
as the theory tends to be quite different from the
actual practice. I believe that experience in doing
something tends to be better than knowledge
on how to do something. Therefore, what I
did to learn how to script was follow tutorials;
on websites, on YouTube, on streams of game
developers creating games. This encompassed
my Research and Thinking skills, as it allowed
me to Develop Long Term Memory on how
to script specific things and events, all whilst
learning new technologies (C#).
One such example on how I did this was by
creating an Angry Birds style game, where the
player operated a bird who was tasked with
knocking down crates and other obstacles in
order to kill purple monsters by launching itself
at them. I did this following a tutorial by Jason
Weimann on YouTube4, where I learnt how to
operate the Unity Editor and some scripting.
This relates to Criterion C of my product’s Success
Criteria, which is Scripting. It is impossible to
carry out the creation of the product without
knowing how to script the game into a playable
version. Finally, this helped me reach my
learning goal in a similar way to the previous
task, as what I wanted to learn was how to script
and create games.

Task 4, 5 and 6: Creating the Game Design
Document

The fourth task is directly related to the fifth and
sixth task, as these two other tasks are just an
expansion on the main task, which is the fourth.
The fourth task is the Creation of the Game
Design Document. A Game Design Document is
a document that serves as an outline of what the
game will be like, such as the assets, mechanics,
gameplay, game elements and an executive
summary of the game as a whole.
Creating a Game Design Document is an
integral part of the Game Development Cycle.
It allows you to write down your ideas for the
game, without having to constantly rely on your
memory to remember how you wanted a specific
thing to be. If you’re working with other people
on the project, it helps them see the vision of the
project you had in your head and gives them a
reference on how the product should be. Finally,
once the game is completed you can compare
it to the Game Design Document and use the
latter as a sort of benchmark, although the actual
game tends to stray from the initial Game Design
Document as setbacks appear here and there
and new ideas arise.
By creating a Game Design Document, I am
utilising the Self-Management approach to
learning, and more specifically I am utilising the
Planning skill, as I am creating a plan on how
the Game will work and what work needs to
be done. Furthermore, this also falls under the
communication approach to learning, with
the written communication skill being used to
transmit ideas.
Tasks five and six are a part of creating the Game
Design Document, which I decided to add in
order to split up when each part of the document
should be completed, as I knew this was

something that was going to take a lot of time.
Task five was to be comprised of the Gameplay
of the game, and the mechanics that would be
included in said game. Then, Task Six was where
the Assets and Game Elements would fall under.
These 3 tasks closely tie into the product goal, as
it aids in the creation of all 4 criteria of Product
Success by setting out a plan on how they will
be achieved, and the Game Design Document
is even responsible for a criterion of its own
(Criterion A). As for the Learning Goal, the Game
Design Document is related to the latter as part
of learning how to create a videogame is learning
how to successfully plan one, which the Game
Design Document covers.

take up too much space and there is a limited

The Seventh task was to learn Game Creation with
Unity Engine. However, this task ended up being
somewhat merged into Task three, which was
learning how to script, as one cannot learn how to
script in C# without actual objects to script, as C#
is an Object-based programming language.
To learn how to do this, I followed several
tutorials on YouTube and read some of the
Unity Documentation in order to get a general
idea of how it all worked. Once that was done,
I decided to get a bit hands on and followed the
same tutorial I used for scripting, but this time
changed up the levels a bit and added some
personal touches.
Similar to Task three, I used my Thinking and
Research skills. The knowledge I learnt was
used to Develop Long Term Memory and to get
knowledge I would later apply on the actual
creation of the game, and I also learnt new
technologies (Unity Game Engine). I also learnt
how to create User Interfaces in Unity, and since
I already knew how to create Interfaces in other
programs this was fairly easy to get used to.
This task is related to Criterion D and Criterion B
the Product Success Criteria, which are User In-
terface and Gameplay. The creation of the game
is directly related to the gameplay, as the latter
depends on how things are laid out to be success-
ful. As for my learning goal, learning how to use a
Game Creation engine that is as powerful as unity
is incredibly valuable, as it allows me to use it for
further, more advanced projects in the future.

To create the game, as I stated before, I used
Unity Game Engine, with assets from the Unity
Asset Store and the C# coding language. There
isn’t much to write here, as all it involved was
hours on hours of hard work to ensure the game
was up to the standards I wanted.
This was the apex of my project, for which
3 Product Success Criteria apply: Criteria B
(Gameplay), Criteria C (Scripting) and Criteria D
(Interface), as it is the combination of the 3 that
make up the game. Criterion A (Game Design
Document) also came into play, as it helped me
decide what elements had to go first and were a
benchmark on how the levels should be designed.
This was the most important part to create the
product; I was literally creating the product now.
As for the learning goal, this gave me valuable
experience that I will be able to use for my next
games, such as what things are good to do and
what things I should refrain from doing.
For this, the evidence I have are the scripts I
made which I uploaded to GitHub, and the actual
game which I uploaded to itch.io

Task 10: Personally Testing the Game
Thinking Trouble Shoot
Task ten was carried out alongside task 9, as
I was constantly testing the game as I made
changes to ensure everything worked before I
moved forward with the project. However, not
everything worked how I wanted it to, for which
I had to think and troubleshoot.
One such example is the platform movement
wasn’t working, so I had to troubleshoot to find
out the issue. After around a quarter of an hour, I
realised the issue was that the waypoints were set
at different values in the Y axis, which prevented
the platform from moving as it detected changes
on both the X and Y axis.
This task comprised Criterions B and C, which
are the Gameplay and the scripting. This is
because issues where the game doesn’t work due
to an error in the code are related to the Scripting
component of the game, and if the game doesn’t
work this also lowers the gameplay component
of the game.
I believe personally testing the game really
helped me reach my learning goal, as it let me see
what errors I made and helped me correct them
and learn how to fix them in order for this not to
happen again in the future when I am creating a
game of my own for personal reasons rather than
educational reasons. As for the product goal, this
helped me perfect the product and mould it into
what I truly wanted it to be since the beginning.
There aren’t any pieces of evidence for this as it
was done on the go, and I didn’t think of taking
screenshots or screen recording.

Task 11: Opening the Game to Outdoor Testers
Communication Give and receive meaningful
feedback
Task eleven was simply opening the game to a
select group of outdoor testers in order to receive
feedback on how to improve the game. In the
software development world, this is known as Beta
Testing, and it falls under the Communication
Approach to Learning and more specifically the
Give and receive meaningful feedback part of
this ATL.
For my Beta test I uploaded a variant of the game
to itch.io and asked for some people from the
Unity Community Discord Server to try the game
out and give me some meaningful feedback in
the form of bug reports.
I received several reports, such as the player
being able to clip outside the map boundaries
and this being recognised as the level being
passed, or reports of cherries being physically
unobtainable due to the positioning and physics
constraints of the Player Character.
This was part of Criterion B, as I finally allowed
other testers to access the gameplay, which
allowed me to know if the gameplay actually met
the criteria I had previously created prior to the
creation of the game.
This step related to my Product goal as it helped
me make it better and further perfect it to the
best form possible, and it related to my learning
goal as I experienced what having
a game in Beta Testing and what
receiving feedback was like.

testers sent back and that serves as
evidence for this task:

Task 12: Listening to Feedback
Social Listen to Others
Task twelve was pretty straightforward. With
the feedback I had received in task eleven I
now had to make changes to ensure these bugs
and mistakes were corrected; Just receiving
the feedback was of no use if I didn’t listen to
it. This thus fell under the Social aspect of the
Approaches to learning, and under the skill of
listening to others.
So, I changed the bugs and sent it to the testers
again, and once they were happy with the final
result the game could be considered finished.
This last step of the process related to Criterion
B, or the gameplay, as I listened to feedback
provided by people and made changes to the
gameplay accordingly. As for the evidence, below
is the fixed version of the bug report in Task 11.
This last step of the project related to my Product
goal as it was the final step needed to finally
complete the first version of my videogame. It
brought together everything I had been working
for the past 15 weeks in a fitting way. As for my
learning goal, this final step was the last stone
that had to be set in my learning process, and
now I believe I know how to create a game, and
if given the time and resources could easily do it
completely by myself, without the aid of tutorials
or google.

Reflecting
Impact of project on myself and my learning
This project had three main impacts on myself,
and as a consequence, on my learning. The first
one of these I’d say is that I now know how to
code using C# and can even code a basic game
in Unity. The second impact this process had on
me was a great improvement of my planning
skills through the creation of the Game Design
Document. Finally, the third and final impact
carrying out this project had on me was on my
plans for the future; seeing as I now know how
to create videogames, I think I might try to create
one to formally publish in the future, but that is
yet to see.
Skill Knowing how to code
Thanks to this project, I now know how to code
a basic game in C#. Whilst this might not seem
like much initially, as someone who had never
written a line of code before this project this is a
colossal improvement. I went from someone with
no idea on how to code to someone who knows
enough coding in order to apply it into real-world
scenarios and having the code actually work
without bugs. I believe what was responsible for
this change was the tutorials I followed, as they
really allowed me to understand what I was doing
and why I was doing it in a way that was concise
and comprehensive. This experience allowed me
to truly comprehend what it was that was behind
everything that went on in a videogame, whether
it be on someone else’s videogame or on my own.
Skill Improved Planning Skills
As a result of this project, I managed to improve
my planning and time-management skills. This
was done through the creation of a timetable
with specific dates for each task to take place and
descriptions of what each individual task should
constitute, and through the creation of a Game
Design Document which allowed me to set my

ideas down in writing before further proceeding
with the project. Before this project took place,
I left everything for the last moment, constantly
procrastinating and being in a loop of thinking
“I’ll do it later”, which led me to doing things
in a rushed manner without much thought put
into them. However, since the start of the project
my procrastination has greatly decreased and
I now do things before they are due, following
a weekly planner and schedule. This has seen
an improvement on my grades and my creative
output, as for example in this project, where I
managed to channel my inner creativity to create
a game I am truly satisfied and happy with.
Future Plans Creation and Publishing of a
full-size Videogame
Whilst this was a complete videogame, I am
not sure if it can be considered a “full-size”
videogame. Yes, it includes all the necessary
aspects of a videogame, but I believe it could be
more complex, have more levels, and more things
to do and collect in general. What this project has
inspired me to do is keep working on this game
past the Personal Project and work it into a full-
sized game, with much more levels and traps,
multiple collectibles and much more player
mechanics. I gained a lot of motivation to keep
learning and keep improving my skills when it
comes to game creation and coding in general,
and I am really excited to keep working on this
project and possibly officially publishing it to
the web and to the general public one day. This
has also motivated me into delving into different
programming languages and more applications
of programming other than that of videogames,
and maybe even create an application.

Overall, I’d say I’m pretty satisfied with how the
product turned out. There is definite room for
8/8 improvements in areas such as the Interface that
could be improved a lot such as with the addition of

more User Interface Items, such as a pause button,
a main menu, a mute music button and much
4/8 more. The Gameplay is quite good in my opinion,
although if I were to redo the project I’d add more
of a story and a further logical link between the
levels than the current one. Other areas such as
the scripting are very close to perfect, as they meet
the highest possible standards for grading (8/8).

CRITERION A: Planning
Throughout my life, I have had many experiences
in which people were being exposed to drastic
situations. Through the understanding of what
people were going through, I discovered a
whole new world; one which allowed me to
communicate with others, non-verbally, leading
to me feeling less lonely in hard times and to really
enjoy every moment at its fullest, making me
truly understand how lucky I am for everything I
have been offered in life. This is why, through the
process of completing my personal project, my
main goal is to learn how each individual lives life
in a unique way and how issues introduced into
their lives inflict onto their personal well-being.
I plan to do so through primary and secondary
research. I will present the information collected
in a booklet format to spread awareness.
Furthermore, by sharing these stories, I am
hoping to inspire others to become the most
positive, aware, and open-minded people they
can be. Moreover, through this project, I will be
exposing them to ways in which they can have an
impact, large or small. I will do this through the
expression of different challenges and beliefs one
has, implementing literature, in an innovative
manner.

will not only need to apply a substantial amount

Lastly, I classify these learning goals as lifelong
skills one should acquire to live a life of global
awareness.
My product goal will be to present two or more
stories which express challenges different
people are forced to face within their lives and a
few pieces of poetry. To help me reach both my
learning and product goals, I have set different
criteria which I will need to follow. Furthermore, I
have narrowed them down to seven main criteria
which I will base my success on: aesthetics,
quantity, quality, content, audience, impact, and
sources. When it comes to aesthetics, I would
like for my product to be organized in a logical
manner appealing to the audience, and in a way
that it successfully reflects the themes presented;
by meeting these criteria the audience will have a
clear and well-presented idea of what my project
and its aim is. It will be presented in a platform
which successfully and logically reflects and
connects the story’s content (ex. the colors/
images/ illustrations/ font reflects the content).
I will try and reach these criteria by inquiring
into different connotations which are made in
regard to certain figures, colors, shapes, and
images, hoping that it will, successfully, deliver
the chosen message and intrigue the audience.
Secondly, I would like for my product to,
contemporarily, have both quantity and quality,
to ensure this I will have to strongly input
by summarizing skills by wisely selecting
what topics to discuss. Furthermore, to reach
my expectations, I will need for my writing
to have enough information to satisfy the
audience’s knowledge. To ensure a successful
understanding of the writing, it will be a

excellent use of communication skills, for the
audience to successfully develop awareness
regarding the issues presented. I would also like
them to feel engaged with the topic. To further
allow this, there will also be different techniques
incorporated in the writing allowing for the
audience to also seek a personal connection.
Finally, when sharing my product, I will ensure
that the information shared comes from reliable
sources which concur with what shared by the
interviewees.
My product goals will help me reach my learning
goal as when working on reaching those goals,
I will also need to use a variety of ATL skills
which share common ground with the ways
I want to achieve my learning. I will be using
my critical thinking skills when working on
creating my product. For a successful outcome,
when interviewing the interviewees, I will need
to identify gaps in knowledge and formulate key
questions, consider ideas from other perspectives
and points of view, formulate provocative
questions and goals and identify obstacles and
challenges – this will allow to have further insight
into his/ her personal life. I will also use transfer
skills I already have in unfamiliar situations.
For example, when it comes to organizing text.
These skills needed for my product goal will
help me achieve my learning goal as they focus
on exercising the learning I am hoping to gain. I
will evaluate the success of my product through
a survey which the audience will be able to fill

disposal. Additionally, even though I have a
clear idea of what I would like for my product to
be, I am open changes if it means improving my
overall product and its impact. Nevertheless, if
changes are made, I will look over my success
criteria and investigate for ways which I can
meet the success criteria in an alternative
way, demonstrating equal standard, with the
same founding concept. I will use my success
criteria when looking over each individual
piece. Furthermore, I am hoping that by setting
certain standards for myself to achieve through
my product and learning, I will be able to give
more attention to detail and ensure that there
is diversity throughout the project. Moreover,

my planning as it will be what makes sure I stay
on track.
To conclude, to help make sure I meet all my
goals, in the given amount of time, I will be
following a detailed plan. When following the
plan, I will need to strongly apply my self-
management skills and push myself to dedicate
the appropriate amount of time to each sector of
my product. When creating my plan, I wanted
to ensure that I was detailed and noted certain
points which allowed for me to reflect on my
progress in accordance with the plan (below you

I believe that the fact that this project is not
only something I am passionate about but also
something which describes societal issues, it
will allow me to push through as it will be a

To help achieve my learning and product
goal I applied different ATL skills (research
skills, critical and creative thinking skills, self-
management skills, reflection skills, social skills,
and communication skills) to meet the standards
I set for myself. In accordance with my plan,
my actions followed an order to allow for me
to have the resources I needed to successfully
complete the product. The plan was of essential
use throughout the completion of my product
as I set different reminders and dedicated
specific moments to working on my personal
project; every week I recognised it as essential
to dedicate my time on Saturdays from 2-3p.m
and on Tuesdays from 6-8p.m on working on my
personal project. As my calendar shows, when
possible, I dedicated additional time to working
on my personal project throughout the week.
Throughout the process, it was also of essential
importance to seek out criticism and feedback,
which I did through conducting different surveys
and contacting my supervisor, my teachers
and family members when needed (see figure
6). Additionally, I showed perseverance and
persistence by being constant in the amount
of time I dedicated to my project, regularly
contacting my supervisor and comparing my
progress in accordance with the plan I had set for
myself. Lastly, I built understanding of personal
strength and challenges to have a clear idea on
what changes to make for constant progress.
I showed this through the justifications of the
changes I made; for example, the reasoning
behind having a printed format of my product,
instead of a digital one.
Firstly, as my learning goal was to gain more
awareness of how certain events and challenging
experiences impact a person’s life and learn
different ways in which I can express thoughts,
ideas, and beliefs through literacy in a clear
and innovative manner, I inquired into different
possible candidates for the interviews. When
researching into whom I could potentially

interview, I applied critical thinking skills to
identify problems and develop aims as I had
to consider how his/ her story relates to my
personal project (what problems am I raising
awareness upon) and what the aim/ impact of
sharing his/ her story was. When considering
whom to interview, I had to apply my reflection
skills as I considered my personal relationships
with different people, ideas, and concepts.
Furthermore, this caused some conflict as I didn’t
know where I stood in asking him/ her personal
questions due to factors as my age or familiarity.
I also conducted several surveys through
Microsoft Forms which increased my general
knowledge of different challenges individuals
face (see figure 7.) Once I had gathered all the
potential interviewees, I decided to contact them
and, upon agreement, schedule an interview. Out
of the 4 candidates I contacted, two accepted and
confirmed availability for a potential interview.
Amongst the two that accepted, the first was
a man who was a refugee at an organization
which I volunteered at in the past and the second
was a woman who experienced conflict in her
marriage and fought cancer. At their response,
I started investigating into potential questions
and information which I would like to find out
more on during the interview; I researched
into past journalists’ techniques and questions
when inquiring into a story. Here I applied my

formulated the questions for the interview. When
formulating the questions, I applied creative
thinking skills as Identified my gaps in knowledge
to formulate key questions as presented in
figure 2. Eventually, I considered what I already
knew about the individual, and what I would
like to learn more about to further deepen my
connection with the interviewees. For instance,
I inquired more into the services and goals of an

organization through which I encountered one
of the candidates, Conde Abubakar (see figure 3),
watched interviews on refugees and researched
further into the medical background of cancer.
This was a pleasant surprise as I didn’t expect
to also gain more scientific knowledge from this
project. Once I had gathered more information
and had more background knowledge, I felt more
prepared for the interviews. Moreover, I strongly
applied my information literacy skills to find
information through different media, identifying
primary and secondary sources and filtering
how reliable each source was. For example, to
back up certain information retrieved from the
interviews I utilized different media to either
obtain or back up certain perspectives. This
included historical data on the political situation
of certain countries, such as the political situation
in Italy in the early 2000s.
When conducting the interviews, I applied
my social collaboration skills as I felt obliged
to provide a safe and comfortable setting for
the interviewee by being empathetic and
respecting his/her differing points of view. I also
used communication skills as it is of essential
importance when being an interviewer to clearly
express a thought or a question to make sure
that the interviewee is able to correctly interpret
questions leading to topic-centred answers.
Moreover, I used active listening techniques
to understand him/ her and used a variety
of speaking techniques to make sure that the
purpose/ message of my questions/ statements
was clear. Once the interview had been conducted,
I had to transcribe the whole interview. This took
a lot of motivation and perseverance as I had to
make sure that I retrieved all the main points
correctly and coherently. I, once again, applied
my creative thinking skills to break down large
components to logically combine parts of my
transcription (see figure 4) to make sure that
I could easily look back at those points when
composing the stories. I also applied my transfer

skills as I was translating the interviews from
Italian (a language I don’t usually use in more
academic situations) to English. When I finished
my first draft, I started brainstorming different
ideas on ways I could organise my writing. I
also made connections between different areas
such as how, what the interviewee said, relates
to present day issues. Additionally, to meet
my criteria of conveying the stories in a clear
manner, I conducted additional research after
the interview, to learn more about the topics/
issues discussed. For example, I researched on
the political situation of the country (Africa)
from which one of my interviewees came from
to better interpret and share his story. Through
that research, I was able to ensure greater
credibility and validity within my story. To
enhance the story, I also researched into different
words to help portray the story by researching
synonyms (Thesaurus. (2021). Thesaurus.com.
https://www.thesaurus.com/) to use.
Once I completed my research from my draft,
I transcribed my final piece of writing. At this
point, I started investigating into potential
ways to present my product, considering all
alternatives to make sure that I portrayed my
message in the best way. At first I thought of
presenting my product in a multimedia way
(through a platform). This brought me to reflect
on the purpose of my product, and as I wanted to
present it in a manner more personal to myself,
I decided to present it using a paper/ booklet
format (see figure 5.) My completed product is
two short stories, on the two individuals, and
four different pieces of poetry, written in relation
to my personal experiences and perspectives on
life. The poetry booklet relates to my original idea
for my personal project, writing different pieces
of poetry. Nonetheless, I had decided to change
my project to one of writing stories. However,
through the process of creating my product, I
practiced my flexible thinking skills by making
intuitive judgements on what I thought would

best help me reach my product goal, considering
the opportunities, resources and limitations there
can be. An example of a limitation was finding
individuals to interview as, even if his/ her
personal story could be successfully adapted to
a story for my project, my personal relationship
with the individual did not provide for a good
fit. The poetry booklet, as well, aims to inspire
others as I wrote most of the poetry wrote when
I was going through a hard time myself. This led
me to reflecting on my personal well-being and,
along the way, comparing to how my emotional
status was progressing/ changing.
As a result of fully developing these ATL skills, I
was able to develop as a student as I apprehended
certain skills which helped me understand the
best techniques for me to learn. Furthermore, as
the project is personal to me and when working
upon it, I wanted to make sure that I did what
would work best for myself, I attempted different
apprehension skills and was able to reflect on
the most effective way for me to learn, through
the application of those skills. For instance, when
preparing for the interviews I investigated into
different approaches one has as an interviewer.
By practising my research skills, I was able to
identify key components of researching; for
example, the importance of the use of certain
key words and how to recognize and validate the
reliability of a certain platform through factors
as its URL or publisher. The development of
these skills impacted my learning within other
subjects as I apprehended certain skills which I
know I will be able to apply for life, as I already
am on a daily basis. For example, the practice of
my literacy skills through the transcription of the
interviews as well as the apprehension of globally
and locally sourced issues in the present day.
These help me develop as a student and a person
on both a short- and long-term scale as not only
do I now have additional knowledge upon the
topic, but I also have a better understanding of
how to gain said knowledge.

CRITERION C: Reflecting
The goal of the project was for me to learn
different ways in which one can express thoughts,
ideas, and beliefs, through literacy, in a clear and
innovative manner, by investigating into what
allows for writing to be such a powerful, special,
and unique experience; ways that writing can,
positively, have an impact society. I also wanted to
learn how past and present-day issues contribute
to individual and collective well-being. When the
project was introduced, I wanted to do something
more active, something which I felt would have
a much stronger and direct impact on the society
around me, however, due to covid restrictions
and me being new to the country I felt as I had
to stick something different yet still close to my
heart.
The process started before I even knew it!! I
had to find potential interviewees, receive their
consent, research to then formulate proper
questions, transcribe to then translate my
interviews, and then compose and organise
everything according to my aesthetical
preferences. Along the process, I had to adjust
my plan whilst ensuring I met deadlines.
For example, initially I set for myself to have
conducted both interviews by the beginning of
October. However, as my interviewees reside in
Italy (and I in Qatar – I was travelling at the end
of the month), I had to be flexible and work on
other aspects first (research writing techniques,
political and cultural aspects of the interviewees

my stories.) Additionally, in the plan I set myself
to have interviewed a few more individuals - I
decided it was best to conduct two interviews
as I had underestimated the length of the
process. Instead, I thought to differentiate my
type of writing to further develop my language
and literature skills through the practice of
composing pieces of poetry. I had also set
different dates to dedicate myself to organizing
a workshop on the power of writing for the SEK

community. However, due to covid restrictions I
was unable to do so. This was a disappointment
as I wish I could have been able to have a greater
impact on my community and it proved my self-
management skills to not be as efficient as I
thought. The exhibition date was postponed and
conducted virtually. Thus, instead of physically
preparing my exhibit, I created a Microsoft
Sway presentation and a two-minute video
explaining my project. I feel as the presentation
of my product wasn’t as effective as I found
it much harder to communicate with the
audience digitally. Along the process of hearing
the incredible stories of these two individuals,
I discovered that I wasn’t as open-minded or
knowledgeable on the issue as I thought before
the project. I would generally confine myself
to judging a person due to only considering a
single-story, whereas now I know that there can
be, and usually is, more than one motive behind
a certain situation. I also further developed
my social and communication skills as whilst
interviewing Maria and Abubakar, I stepped out
of my comfort zone and, no-matter how much
I prepared for the interviews, I had to be open
to different reactions and responses practising
my improvisation skills. This has already had
an immense impact in my daily life as I am now
able to have conversations with many more
people as I feel more confident in regard to
my communication and social skills and have
further developed my empathy skills (I am able
to ‘put myself in another person’s shoes.’)
I reached my learning goal as, through the
research of different techniques writers used
and practical application when composing my
two stories and four poems, I was able to develop
as a writer and expand my vocabulary whilst
learning about challenges inflicted on one’s life.
Furthermore, to ensure that I would reach my
product goals, I set different criteria I was aiming
to achieve:

Aesthetics: I felt as I have met the criteria I had
set as the aim was to present my product in a
format which reflected the purpose of the product
(a story or poem), follow a logical format, have
substantial balance between pictures and writing
and have an aesthetically pleasing/ attractive
format for the audience. However, I do not feel
as I exceeded as I could have incorporated
more illustrations throughout the booklet and
made it more valuable for example by creating
a hard cover. I believe that if I had been more
balanced on what I dedicated my time, I could
have potentially exceeded this criteria as I would
have focused on the aesthetical presentation, as
well as its content. This changed my opinion on
how effective I think my self-management skills
are as if I had organized my time more wisely,
I would have probably been able to exceed my
aesthetical criteria as well.
Quantity and Content: In relation to the
quantity and content of my product I feel as I have
exceeded my expectations as I present six pieces
of writing instead of the two I had set to meet the
criteria. Furthermore, thanks to the quantity the
audience was able to clearly interpret the stories.
Additionally, the content fulfills its purpose as it
highlights and emphasizes the challenges one
can be forced to face in life, and the importance
of the journey of these two individuals. It was of
essential importance that I used my media literacy
skills as I had to organise, analyze, evaluate, and
synthesize my information efficiently to ensure
that I communicated the message effectively for
multiple audiences.
Audience: As I was unable to personally present
my project (due to covid restrictions), we had a
virtual exhibition so, consequently, feedback and
questions were also given online.
Impact: The impact the project had on me
exceeds what I expected as my understanding on
the topics I researched strongly and thoroughly

improved, I was able to connect the interviewees
lives (stories which I wrote) to many other lives
(I interpreted and shared it as a microcosm
to many lives), consequently, improving my
awareness to modern day issues. Additionally, the
poems I shared presented certain perspectives
and feelings which I feel very close to my heart
– this allowed for me to reflect on what impact
different personal experiences, in my life, had on
me. However, I feel as the impact it had on the
audience only meets my expectations as due to
certain covid restrictions and my limited skills
when it came to finding an alternative solution to
doing service learning (primarily I had in mind
of organizing a workshop), I feel as I was unable
to directly have an impact on my surrounding
community.
Quality and sources: To evaluate the quality of
the pieces I produced, I compared them to the

English criteria (B & D) what classifies as a 10
graders standard of writing which, according
to the criteria, I meet as I organise text and use
language and punctuation effectively and in
a logical and coherent manner. Additionally,
I applied my information literacy skills when
verifying the information from the interviews
with different sources to ensure the information
I received from the interviews was reliable and
valid – I did so by comparing it to other sources
which I identified as credible (who the author
is, how biased he/ she is, what evidence he/ she
has (primary/ secondary…), the platform it is
shared on and the date of publication)). At the
end of the interview I asked each interviewee
how felt, Maria said that that she felt “happy to
share this part of my life with someone- it feels
wonderful and liberating” and Conde Abubakar
expressed that “I never thought my life would
be of inspiration to other people, so thank you.”

Throughout the project my supervisor meetings
were very important and nourishing to my project
as they allowed for me to share and discuss
ideas which led me to coming to a decision
which I felt was best for me and my surrounding
environment.
As an overall, this project not only helped me
develop as a student but also as a person as I
am now able to apply something I love, writing,
with the aim of having an impact with the
people around me. I have also developed certain
skills and attributes which have taught me new
apprehension techniques which I will be able to
use for the rest of my life, inside and outside a
classroom.
