NATURAL DISASTER
Natural disaster is any catastrophic event caused by nature or the natural processes of the
earth.
CHARACTERISTICS OF NATURAL DISASTERS:
Natural disasters have the characteristics of being caused by nature, causing situations that
affect humanity, such as:
Damage to houses and roads,
Destruction of basic structures and services,
Loss of life,
Basic service cuts.
2. - METEOROLOGICAL:
This type of natural disaster can occur in many variations and all of them are weather
related.
These can be predicted with some anticipation thanks to modern technologies that define
the behavior of the climate and analyze the possibility that they will affect a certain place.
Within the natural meteorological disasters we have, for example, Typhoons, cold and
warm fronts, El Niño and La Niña, tornadoes, tropical storms, hurricanes, snowfall, hail,
drought and floods due to rain.
3. - GEOPHYSICALS:
They are all those natural disasters that are formed or arise from the very bowels of the
planet Earth or from the terrestrial surface.
Within this group we can find avalanches, landslides, solar storms, earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, fires and landslides, among some others.
4. - BIOLOGICAL:
Biological natural disasters are caused by some special circumstance within the animal
kingdom and somehow affect the environment and humanity.
The most important and representative biological natural disaster is the complex red tide.
Other examples can be plagues, epidemics and infections such as swine fever or bird flu.
Natural phenomena, such as rain or storms, are considered natural disasters when they
exceed the limit of what is otherwise considered normal.
Natural disasters are caused by man by changing the status quo of the environment and
wrongly interacting with it.
The overexploitation of natural resources generates many problems such as pollution,
climate change and settlements in natural areas that are not conducive to it. These actions
end up having a negative impact on the environment, generating situations of potential
disaster that we later say is “natural”.
