Presentación
English 3 is one of the subjects that belongs to the communication area of the curriculum,
along with two other subjects: Taller de Lectura y Redacción (Spanish Reading and
Composition) and Informática (Computing). According to the ccf, the area’s main objective
is to promote in students the development of the following skills: critical reading,
argumentation of ideas, effective communication in the student’s native language and an
additional language (in this case, English). This subject is taught in the first semester and
its antecedent is the subject Foreign Language taught in the basic education level
(secundaria). Its purpose is to increase and consolidate the social practices of language,
this is, what the expert users of the language do to interpret and produce oral and written
texts, preserving the social function of such acts.
The four courses of the English program focused on the competence based approach, don’t
ignore previous approaches, specially the communicative approach, which has been one of
the most relevant ones.
The main goal of English 3 is to develop the communicative competence of the second
language student by developing linguistic communicative skills: oral and written production
and listening and reading comprehension.
This workbook is divided into four blocks. Each one develops a particular theme, which is
common in the life of our students, and is developed in specific contexts where
communication and the use of language are performed naturally. In this way, the student
develops his or her proficiency by acquiring new vocabulary, reinforcing the knowledge of
grammar structures learned previously and by developing linguistic skills with appropriate
practice and evaluation.

Changing my life
Contexto

FOOD AND US
(Craven, 2019)
ARJUN
Please tell us about food in your countries. What do people usually eat? What kind of things
do you usually eat?
Hi. I’m from India. A lot of people in India don’t eat any beef. We eat lots of vegetables and
usually have some rice and some bread with every meal. After we eat, we like to have some
fruit, too. Bananas are my favorite. Western food is popular here, of course, and young
people especially like to eat burgers, and that kind of thing. They aren’t hamburgers because
they don’t have any meat inside. They have vegetables inside, so they’re vegetable burgers!
LENA
In Austria, our food is very international. Chinese, Turkish, Indian, and Italian restaurants
are all popular. The big meal of the day is lunch, but for something quick, try Austria
Sandwich –it’s cheap, too. We eat a lot of meat, rice and vegetables. For dinner, I usually
have something easy –meat, bread and cheese. Of course, we have some great desserts,
too. Do you know that Austrians like cake?

Tom Smith usually has only 15 minutes to eat lunch so he bolts it down. This does not mean
he eats much for lunch since he only has a sandwich and a coffee. However, his wife Susan
loves cooking and she always whips up a wonderful dinner. This explains why Tom is not so
thin. He pigs out every evening on a full course dinner - a roast with vegetables and a pasta
side and to top it off, a big dessert which Susan picks up on the way home from school where
she is a teacher. Susan is quite petite, so it is not surprising that she only picks at all the food
she prepares and just gnaws at a carrot or some other vegetable while she listens to Tom
speak about his day. For breakfast, Tom sometimes warms up Susan's left-overs and then
he runs off for another day of work. This is against the doctor's advice so Tom should think
about cutting back on meat and eggs to bring down his cholesterol. Actually, Mary, the
woman who helps them with their house also has high cholesterol, even though she has cut
out meat and eggs and is on a diet of fish and steamed vegetables. Recently, however,
Susan has noticed that the whiskey bottle is emptying out quite quickly so she suspects that
Mary is knocking it back now and again. This would be OK except for the fact that this is
Susan's favorite bottle of whiskey!
