Chapter 2
INTRODUCTION and
DESCRIPTION
Introduction
The image capture technology used in the LS 515 allows up to two images of the document to be captured
at the same time and in a single pass. These images are front (neutral image) and rear (neutral image).
With the LS515 it is possible to acquire the image front and rear with only one color (red, green or blue).
On a system command the peripheral can scan the document and deposit the read image-data into
memory ready to be transferred to the system as soon as the system sends the appropriate command.
Resolution can be chosen: either 100 or 200 dot/inch with 16 or 256 shades of gray or color images.
The document is driven through an “U” shaped path; before the bend the LS 515 reads the code-line and
when returning it stamps, prints and scans.
It is provided with a leafer that permits automatic document feeding (approximately 80 documents) for
documents that require the CMC7 or E13B code-line decoding, and with a linear entrance for handling
rigid documents that require only image capturing (i.e. credit cards).
The processed documents are deposited into one of the two collecting compartments, depending on the
instruction received from the system.
The read document stops temporarily, while the system performs the choice.
Connection to the system is made using a SCSI or USB 2.0 interface, which supply a fast image-data
transfer from the peripheral to the system. For the SCSI model only, it is possible to set a SCSI ID for the
peripheral from 0 to 7 by dip switch setting.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
Feeder
The feeder can hold up to 80 documents at a time. The feeding system is such that it is possible
to insert one or more documents at a time as even when stopped the document presser remains
open.
Image acquisition
The scanner module used is a new CIS with compact size. It is able to acquire images with a
resolution of 100/200 dpi,16/256 shades of grey or colour, by using an illumination system RGB.
The protective glass slide at the rear of the scanner is placed at the printing height of the ink-jet
printhead.
Autodiagnostic
The LS515 can run self-diagnosis for all its electromechanical components and includes an
internal Log for recording all necessary data and in order to make all maintenance easier.
Data interface
The LS515 communicates with the host via a SCSI-2 or USB2.0 interface, depending on the
model.
SW test program
The LS515 uses a specific SW to test all functions /applications.
Power supply
LS515 has an internal power supply. The LS515 has a switch which can interrupt the power
supply tension.
Document selection:
The LS515 has got two output recovery bins with a max. capacity of 50 docs per each.
The bins have got sensors which signal when bin is full. The output sequence follows the original
feeding-in sequence.
OPTIONS
MICR reading
The LS515 has got a printhead with a reading height of 11 mm. Its electronics can automatically
decode CMC7 or E13B characters. Its latest algorithm can guarantee a low error rate even with
the most ‘difficult’ documents known so far.
So that reading is reliable, the system which pulls through the document guarantees a maximum
speed error of +/- 3%.
Stamp unit
The LS515 has a stamping system with a self -inking pad. There is no signal for when the ink
runs out. The pad must be personalised by the end user in accordance with guidelines from CTS.
INK-JET printing
The used print head is 12 nozzles type and can write a string of alphanumerical characters on
the back of the document. The vertical position of the printhead is fixed.
There is no ‘correct printing’ signal. There is a counter which can be reset when the printhead is
replaced which records the number of characters printed by each printhead.
Badge reading
The LS515 may also be equipped with an optional manual magnetic badge reader which can
have two or three tracks according to ISO 7810 and ISO 7811 standards.
· The LS 515 reader detects the image on the front or back of the document, reads and decodes the
CODE LINE of magnetic characters on the front of the document and transmits all this information
to the central processing unit.
· This system is connected to the CPU by means of the internal STANDARD SCSI-2 interface and
USB 2.0 interface.

7 - Optical Window
It displays the settings for the OCR or BARCODE decoding.
· Select the track to be read (see point A) and confirm selecting “READ”;
This occurs after a read or scanning command has been sent by the host, when the document stops
along the paper path.
If this occurs, a long beep is sounded and the 3 console LEDs blink until the reader receives a reset
command via PC.
Double leafing is signalled when two documents are fed into the device; LS515 will send a WARNING
message to the host and will continue to work; if requested by the application, it will stop and block the
document transport until the operator removes the double leafing.

! WARNING!
MAINTENANCE
The standard maintenance procedures suggested are the following: (their operation schedule is
obviously variable, being a function mainly of the workload of the peripherals in terms of daily processed
documents and, moreover, of their characteristics and the working environment)
· In order to guarantee that the endorsement is working properly, we recommended to check the
contacts of the ink-jet head. The contacts must be free of ink; if there is some ink, clean the contacts
with detergent solution.
· Periodic verification (every six months) in order to guarantee that the gummed movement rollers are
free from track of dirty or deformations, which could generate skid of the check.
· Periodic verification (every six months) in order to assure the transport and movement belts are all
properly tensioned (the speed variation must always be within the specification) by use of specific tools
(supplied to our service partners when attending the CTS training course), and replacement of the
plastic covers of the camera if not previously done (after about 1,000,000 checks processed their
replacement is recommended)
· In case of wrong insertion of improper documents (i.e. check with staple), proceed immediately to
verify that the parts involved in the reading (MICR head / camera's covers) and in the transport (rollers,
belt) of the document have not been damaged or are out of setting: in case proceed in the re-adjusting
or substitution of the part.
· Remove the ink jet cartridge when the unit has to be packaged and shipped
Operator maintenance
Cleaning procedures
Periodic cleaning (daily / weekly) , by using an aerosol spray, on the entire paper path, mainly in case the
handled checks are of paper leaving deposits and, in case of stain or dirty present on the cover glass of the
camera, slide it out and clean with a cloth moistened with detergent neutral for plastic (never use paint
thinner or other organic solvents, which can leave stains) ; in case of some deposits of dirt or debris on the
transport roller, which could affect their correct grip, proceed in the cleaning using a cloth (or a paper
sheet) drenched with the same detergent and, turning the rollers to be cleaned with the fingers, take care
to exercise just a light pressure on them.
· Verify that along the entire paper path no foreigner articles (i.e: staples, clips, paper debris ..) are
present (and remove them if found).
· Power on the unit and verify its initialization cycle (by hearing the motors running for about 2 - 3 sec )
and the occurred USB connection (acoustic beep).
· Take care to properly line up each check of the bundle in both the front and bottom edge to allow the
proper feeding.
WARNING
1- Never lift up or insert any cable’s connectors when the main switch is in turned On
2- Periodically proceed in the cleaning of the ink jet nozzles (with fiberglass cloth) if the unit is not
regularly utilized.
3- If the unit is not utilized for long period, remove the ink jet cartridge
Pay attention to not have any check inserted along the paper path before to turn Off the LS515.
Troubleshooting
- Check the position of the ink-jet cartridge, pay attention to proceed with care,
avoiding to damage the support. The correct position is shown in the
pictures below.

ADJUSTMENTS
Adjustments
These descriptions are often accompanied by one or more drawings and if necessary help and
check procedures are available to ensure that the adjustment is proceeding as required.
A star in the drawing shows where to use the required tools (screwdriver,
wrenches, etc.)
NOTE!
A too tight belt causes excessive wear while a belt that is too loose tends to slip out of the pulley.
In both cases, the kinematic movements of the belt are hindered.
If specific indications are missing, the tension can be checked by pushing the belt in the middle of
the two pulleys; the deflection value is proportional to the interaxis of the pulleys.
Removing covers
Usually the best thing is to remove and replace the covers in the following order:
· Remove the four screws as shown in figure around the main cover.
· Remove the four screws as shown in figure and lift the base upward.
100gr / 2mm 1
The figure shows the front document stamp; the same conditions must be
reached for the back stamp.
NOTE!
Stamping Quality
· The inking roller-stamp interplay adjustment is done in factory. The stamping quality depends on
the quantity of ink on the inking roller and on the interplay between inking roller and stamp.
The dotted line (3) represents the inking roller which must be removed to
access this adjustment.
NOTE!
The figure shows the back document stamp in its rest position.
The same condition must be obtained for the document front stamp.

This group is made up of three different sensors which monitor double feeding at three different heights
on the document.
The calibration is done in factory using a sheet of white paper with weigh of 80 gr/m² in the input slot.
In case of handling of particular checks (i.e. darker than usual), the customer is required to adjust the
double leafing calibration with reference to one of those documents.
Calibration of this photosensor group may be carried out via a S/W command using the “LSW5 demo
test” diagnostic program.
Proceed as follows:
· LS515 moves the document in front of double leafing photosensor (photosensor 3 page 2-9)
· Check if the document comes through the paper path correctly.
· Press the P1 (see page 3-10) button on the board.
- If the calibration procedure is successful, the document will be sent to the sorter 1;
- If the calibration procedure is not successful, three acoustic beeps will be emitted and the
operator shall remove the document manually.
At this stage the machine is ready to carry out any other operation (the previous calibration data will be
overwritten)
This adjustment ensures the relation between a theoretical number of pixel (obtained from the length in
millimetres of a document) and the number of pixel related to the image digitalized by the peripheral.
Calibration of this group may be carried out via an S/W command using the “LSW5 demo test” diagnostic
program;
· Load the program and select “ Setting“ menu in order to access the calibration menu. Select
“Image Calibration”.

This process is usually done in factory when the electric mother board is new.
Through the CTS download application is possible to write or update the firmware of the unit completely.
In this case the unit has to be connected to a PC by a download cable (CAB-0767), then proceed as
follows.
! WARNING!
”CTS Download" has to be copied in the same folder of the
peripheral DLL.
Through the ”CTS DWL” application, provided with the unit, it is possible to update partly the firmware.
The base of the firmware is not modified and only the variable part is updated. This way connecting the
unit through a download cable is not necessary : the standard connection cable is sufficient.
! WARNING!
”CTS DWL" has to be copied in the same folder of the peripheral DLL.
Run the download application and set all the required information:
