ENGLISH TENSES

PRESENTES
PRESENT SIMPLE
Sujeto + V1/V1-s (he, she, it)
- Para hablar de hechos generales que son verdaderos y permanentes en el mundo.
Hechos y condiciones que no cambian
- Acciones que se realizan habitualmente
Ex: She likes living in Paris = A ella le gusta vivir en París

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
Sujeto + to be + V-ing
- Para hablar de eventos en progreso en el momento en que se habla
- Acciones que se repiten continuamente, generalmente acompañados de adverbios
como always, often, all the tim, constantly
- No se puede utilizar con los state verbs, los cuales describen pensamientos,
sentimientos, sentidos y posesión

Pensamientos: believe, know, remeber, think (cuando significa creer), feel, suppose, etc.

Sentimientos: love, like, hate, want, prefer, etc.

Sentidos: hear, see, feel, touch, smell, taste

Posesión: have, belong, own, etc.

Ex: Mel is watching the TV in her room = Mel está viendo la televisión en su habitación -> sigue
viendo la TV

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE


Sujeto + HAVE/HAS + V3
- Para referirnos a eventos en el pasado conectados con el presente
- Cuando la acción tiene un resultado o consecuencia en el presente
- Para acciones que acaban de finalizar, expresada con el adverbio just.
Ex: He has twisted his ankle, so he cannot play today = Él se ha torcido el tobillo, así que no
puede jugar hoy -> acción pasada con consecuencia actual

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS


Sujeto + HAVE/HAS + BEEN + V-ing

- Para hablar sobre una actividad ya finalizada en el pasado reciente


- Cuando la acción empezó en el pasado y continúa en el presente
Ex: He has been building a house = Él ha estado construyendo una casa -> empezó a construirla
en el pasado y aún no ha terminado
PASADOS
PAST SIMPLE
Sujeto + V-ed/V2
- Para hablar de acciones que empezaron y acabaron en un momento concreto en el
pasado
- Cuando son acciones finalizadas en el pasado
- Acciones que ocurrieron una detrás de otra
- Acciones que ocurrieron hace mucho tiempo
Ex: I drank too much and then I puked = Bebí demasiado y entonces vomité

PAST CONTINUOUS
Sujeto + WAS/WERE + V-ing
- Para hablar de una acción que ocurrió y se desarrolló en el pasado pero no está
determinada en el tiempo
- Para actividades que empezaron en el pasado y continuaron hasta que otra las
interrumpió
- Para actividades que empezaron en el pasado y continuaron después de que sucediera
otra acción
Ex: I was watching the news when mum came back = Estaba viendo las noticias cuando mamá
volvió -> empezó a verlas y no dejó de hacerlo después de que su madre llegara.

PAST PERFECT SIMPLE


Sujeto + HAD + V3
- Para hablar de una secuencia de eventos en el pasado y destacamos el que ocurrió
primero.
- Es el más lejano de los tiempos
- Usamos expresiones como when, as soon as, after, before, etc.
- Usamos adverbios como already, just, never.
Ex: When he got to the station, his train had already left = Cuando llegó a la estación, su trén se
había ido ya -> destacamos el hecho de que el tren se fue antes de que él llegara a la estación.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS


Sujeto + HAD + BEEN + V-ing
- Cuando hablamos de un primer acto en el pasado que empieza antes que otro.
Ex: I needed a walk because I had been sitting down the whole day = Necesitaba un paseo
porque había estado sentada todo el día
FUTUROS
FUTURE SIMPLE
Sujeto + WILL + V1
Para acciones futuras
- Realizar promesas -> I’ll go to destroy the One Ring = Iré a destuir el Anillo Único
- Ofrecimientos espontáneos -> I will make dinner tonight = Haré la cena esta noche
- Situaciones seguras que van a ocurrir en el futuro -> He won’t pass his exam = No
pasará su examen
- Hacer predicciones sin evidencia -> I don’t know, but I think I will visit Howarts next
year = No lo sé, pero creo que visitaré Howarts el año que viene
- Pedir cosas u ordenar -> You won’t eat my chocolates again! = No te comerás mis
chocolates otra vez

FUTURE CONTINUOUS
Sujeto + WILL BE + V-ing
- Acciones en progreso en un tiempo específico en el futuro -> This time tomorrow, I
will be flying to Paris = A esta hora mañana estaré volando a París
- Acciones que vemos como nuevas o temporales -> I will be teaching english until I find
something else = Estaré enseñando (enseñaré) inglés hasta que encuentre otra cosa
- Predicciones sobre eventos futuros -> He’ll be coming to Teatre, I guess = Estará
yendo (irá) a Teatre, supongo
- Predicciones sobre el presente -> She’ll be eating her birthday cake right now = Estará
comiendo su tarta de cumpleaños ahora
- Preguntas formales o educadas -> Will mister Bane be joining us for dinner? = ¿Se
estará uniendo (unirá) el señor Bane a nosotros para cenar?

FUTURE PERFECT
Sujeto + WILL HAVE + V3
- Acciones que van a ser completadas antes de un momento específico en el futuro ->
Next month, we’ll have been married for two years = El mes que viene habremos
estado casados por dos años
- Con by by the time para expresar que la acción sucederá antes que cierto momento
futuro -> I will have died by the time you finish your homework = Habré muerto para
cuando termines los deberes
- Con in, in a day’s time, in two months’ time, etc. Para especificar que la acción ocurrirá
después de dicho periodo de tiempo -> In two years’ time, I will have completed my
degree -> Dentro de dos años habré completado my grado

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS


Sujeto + WILL HAVE BEEN + V-ing
- Para expresar que algo continuará hasta un momento específico en el futuro
- Para mostrar que algo ha terminado justo antes que otra acción futura -> When I end
this trimester, I will have been sleeping bad for months, so I’ll be tired = Cuando
termine el trimestre habré estado durmiendo mal durante meses, así que estaré
cansada
- Con expresiones de tiempo como by the time, when, by then, by tomorrow, etc -> By
the time they arrive, we’ll have been working for hours = Para cuando lleguen
habremos estado trabajando durante horas
GOING TO
Sujeto + BE + GOING TO + V1
- Decisiones e intenciones -> I‘m going to study english after the biology exam = Voy a
estudiar inglés después del examen de biología
- Realizar predicciones que muy probablemente sucedan -> The clouds are getting dark.
It is going to rain = Se están oscureciendo las nubes. Va a llover
- Para hablar del futuro en pasado, es decir, planes para el futuro que se hicieron en el
pasado -> Last time I saw you, you were going to study medicine = La última vez que te
ví, ibas a estudiar medicina

PRESENT CONTINUOUS
Sujeto + am/is/are + V-ing
- Para planes fijos que sabemos que van a suceder
- Intenciones cercanas en el tiempo
Ex: I’m picking up my sister at the train station tomorrow = Estoy recogiendo a mi hermana
de la estación de tren mañana.

PRESENT SIMPLE
Sujeto + V1
- Para situaciones futuras que forman parte de un programa determinado
Ex: The next film of Avatar premieres in 2024 = La siguiente película de avatar se estrena en
2024

Since computers were first introduced to the public in the early 1980's, technology (change)

My English is really getting better. I (try) _______ to learn the language since 2010, but only
