aproximadamente. En la actualidad se mantiene a unos 110$.
English Version:
What is Coltan?
The peculiarities that make it such a special material are its ductility,
superconductivity - materials capable of conducting electrical currents without
resistance or energy losses under certain conditions, having an ultra-refractory
character, withstanding high temperatures, being a capacitor, temporarily
storing electric charge and release it when desired and its high resistance to
corrosion and alteration in general.
Interesting fact: In 2000, the Japanese company Sony had to delay the launch
of the Play Station 2 due to lack of mineral.
This mineral is little known, which is why it does not have in-depth research
detailing the impacts generated by the exploitation of this material. It is
greyish blue in color and has a metallic luster. Tantalum is mainly extracted
from it and, to a lesser extent, Niobium, both having similar properties.

Uses of Coltan
Tantalum capacitors are used in almost all cell phones, laptops, and many
other electronic devices. The relative recent boom in the technology has seen
the price of coltan rise, even to $ 500 per kilogram at one point, as technology
development companies struggle to keep up with demand.
Coltan's ability to hold and move electrical signals, and its conductive ability
in extreme temperatures, makes it ideal for smart pump guidance controls.
Security analysts say it is a strategic mineral.
Mining methods:
Coltan mines are found mainly in the east of the country of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo, in the North and South Kivu regions and in the
Eastern Province. Large rebel movements and the armies of these countries,
who rely on violence to control these areas, occupy these areas, bordering the
countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Extraction:
That is, it is excavated to remove the coltan from the subsoil and lacquer the
obtained mud, since the metal is deposited due to its weight. In the case of
erosive sediments, coltan is found in quarries or underground where it is
excavated with rudimentary instruments or with one's own hands.
Workers are often displaced, prisoners of war or prisoners who are promised a
sentence reduction, and civilians who leave their land or jobs to earn more
money. The salary of a miner can reach 10 dollars a week compared to 10
dollars a month for a normal worker. However, the most sought-after workers
are children as they are more easily introduced into the dug tunnels. They
work in semi-slavery conditions, guarded by the rebels' rifles and in contact
with radioactive materials such as uranium, thorium or radium.
Between 60 and 70% of the coltan exported from the DRC has been obtained
under the supervision of foreign militias and flown directly to Kigali (capital
of Rwanda) or Entebbe (Uganda) from airfields located in the vicinity of the
mines or in military vehicles
Price:
During the year 2000, the price of coltan varied from $ 65 per kilogram to
approximately $ 500. It currently stands at around $ 110.
