EL CAC MÁLAGA presenta la primera exposición en un museo en
España del artista alemán afincado en Los Ángeles, Friedrich Kunath.
There Must Be A Spanish Word For This Feeling reúne una selección
de veinte pinturas realizadas entre 2015-2023, algunas inéditas. Con
un estilo muy personal que confronta lo corriente y lo cotidiano con lo
sublime, crea imágenes emotivas, incluso melancólicas, que, combi-
nadas con frases poéticas, proponen una visión del mundo teñida de
paradojas, humor e ironía, entre la realidad y el paisaje onírico.
Friedrich Kunath nació en 1974 en Chemintz, en la Alemania del
Este; en 1985, se mudó con su familia a Brunswick donde estudió en
la Universidad de Arte de Braunschweig, y en 2007 se trasladó a Los
Ángeles, donde continúa viviendo y trabajando. Estos viajes han mar-
cado su obra, y su vida en la Costa Oeste le ha aportado una mayor li-
bertad a la hora de enfocar su trabajo. Su práctica artística abarca
pintura, escultura, dibujo, vídeo, fotografía e instalación. El romanti-
cismo alemán es una de sus mayores influencias, así como el arte
conceptual y el simbolismo. Sus referentes e intereses son muy varia-
dos, incluyendo la historia del arte, la cultura popular, la filosofía ale-
mana, la ilustración publicitaria, los dibujos animados, la fotografía de
naturaleza, el deslumbrante mundo de Hollywood y Los Ángeles, la

música, el perfume o el tenis.
Combina una variedad de imágenes y elementos de la pintura de pai-
sajes, con figuras de dibujos animados y frases en unas composicio-
nes tragicómicas que están llenas de dicotomías (felicidad-tristeza, es-
te-oeste, luz-oscuridad, profundo-superficial…), de romanticismo,
que no nostalgia, de ironía, que no cinismo, de humor, de ambigüedad
y de emociones que evocan sentimientos universales como el amor, la
pérdida, la esperanza, la soledad, el optimismo o la desesperación.
Todo ello invita al espectador a reflexionar sobre las grandes cuestio-
nes relativas a la existencia pero con sarcasmo y humor. Utiliza colores
intensos, diferentes texturas y motivos recurrentes como degradados
de colores que parecen arco iris o atardeceres en sus pinturas.
La música es un elemento esencial para el artista y con frecuencia hace
referencia o incorpora títulos o letras de canciones en sus pinturas. Los
textos manuscritos que aparecen en sus obras también pueden proce-
der de libros o de poemas. El título de la muestra, There Must Be A Spa-
nish Word For This Feeling [Debe haber una palabra en español para
este sentimiento], procede de la letra de la canción Albemarle Station,
del músico y poeta americano David Berman –figura muy importante
para el artista–, del disco The Natural Bridge (1996). Kunath juega con
el lenguaje, la palabra sentimiento evoca emoción, y las emociones son
un tema central en su trabajo, pero las ilustra de una manera irónica.
Sus pinturas, narrativas complejas, poseen diferentes niveles tanto téc-
nica como conceptualmente, lo autobiográfico, lo emocional y lo con-
ceptual se interrelacionan y nos permiten sumergirnos en el universo
Kunath desde distintas perspectivas, un mundo surreal y alocado.
Kunath posee una visión personal y complicada de la vida contempo-
ránea, de nuestra historia y de nuestro futuro. Sus obras muestran
personas tratando de encontrar su camino en el mundo, luchando
para definir sus vidas, explorando la condición humana y los valores
de la sociedad. Muestran la vulnerabilidad del hombre frente al mundo
y también un deseo de retornar a una forma de vida más simple y
pura. Todo ello queda reflejado en los títulos de sus pinturas. La cru-
deza del mundo visto a través del filtro de la cultura popular.

THE CAC MÁLAGA presents the first museum exhibition in Spain by
German-born Los Angeles-based artist Friedrich Kunath. There Must
Be A Spanish Word For This Feeling features a selection of twenty
paintings made between 2015 and 2023, some of them are now
being exhibited for the first time. With a deeply personal style that con-
fronts the banal and ordinary with the sublime, Kunath creates poign-
ant, often melancholic images which, combined with poetic phrases,
propose a vision of the world suffused with paradox, humour and
irony, shifting between reality and an oneiric landscape.
Friedrich Kunath was born in 1974 in Chemintz, East Germany. In
1985 he moved with his family to Brunswick where he studied at the
Braunschweig University of Art. He moved to Los Angeles in 2007 and
continues to live and work there today. These personal journeys have
marked the artist’s work, while his life on the West Coast has enabled
him to approach his work with greater freedom. Kunath’s oeuvre
spans painting, sculpture, drawing, video, photography and installa-
tion. German Romanticism is one of his major influences; others are
conceptual art and symbolism. His references and interests are
wide-ranging, including art history, popular culture, German philoso-
phy, commercial illustration, nature photography, the dazzling world
of Hollywood and Los Angeles, music, perfume and tennis.
Kunath combines a variety of images and elements from landscape
painting with cartoon figures and texts in tragicomic compositions
filled with dichotomies (happiness-sadness, east-west, light-darkness,
deep-superficial, etc.), romanticism that steers away from nostalgia,
irony that shuns cynicism, ambiguity, and emotions that evoke univer-
sal feelings such as love, loss, hope, loneliness, optimism and despair.
All of this invites viewers to reflect on life’s great questions but with a
touch of sarcasm and humour. He uses deep colours, different tex-
tures and recurring motifs in his paintings, such as colour gradients
that resemble rainbows and sunsets.
Music is an essential element for the artist and he often makes refer-
ence to or includes song titles or lyrics in his paintings. Books and
poems are also the provenance of the handwritten texts that appear in
his works. The title of the show, There Must Be A Spanish Word For
This Feeling, comes from the lyrics of the song Albemarle Station by
US musician and poet David Berman, a very important figure for
Kunath, from the album The Natural Bridge (1996). Kunath plays with
language; the word ‘feeling’ evokes emotion, and emotions are a cen-
tral theme of his work, albeit illustrated ironically.
Kunath’s paintings are complex narratives with different technical and
conceptual levels. The autobiographical, emotional and conceptual
converge, offering different perspectives that draw us into his uni-
verse, a surreal, crazy world.
Kunath has a complicated personal vision of contemporary life, our
past and our future. His works are about people trying to find their way
in the world, struggling to define their lives, exploring the human con-
dition and social values. They highlight the vulnerability of humans
against the world and also a desire to return to a simpler, purer way of
life. All of this is reflected in the titles of his paintings. The harshness
of the world viewed through the filter of popular culture.
