Devan Shimoyama, uno de los artistas emergentes más interesantes
y singulares de la escena artística norteamericana actual, cuyas
obras exploran las identidades queer y afroamericanas al tiempo
que desarrollan narrativas personales. El artista representa la figura
masculina negra queer como deseable a la vez que anhelante y la
elección de materiales inusuales, su sello distintivo, dota a las figuras
representadas de un espíritu mágico y alegre.
Shimoyama nació en 1989 en Filadelfia y vive y trabaja en Pittsburgh,
EE. UU. Con una obra única y personal –que incluye pintura, escultura
e instalación– desafía los estereotipos con representaciones
atrevidas acerca de las complejidades de la raza, el género y la sexua-
lidad. En su obra contrapone los aspectos más oscuros de la realidad,
como el racismo y la violencia policial, la homofobia y la misoginia, con
íconos que representan la belleza, la fuerza y la esperanza.
La diversidad de fuentes –pintura clásica, mitología, simbología,
cultura drag, iconografía queer, animación, moda, cine…– y estéticas
en su aproximación pictórica es una constante en su trabajo en el que
tiene gran importancia el papel del cuerpo y los autorretratos. Sus
composiciones se inspiran en la obra de pintores clásicos como
Caravaggio o Goya, pero con una expresión y una sensualidad más
contemporáneas, entreveradas con aspectos actuales de la cultura
mass media o popular. En sus collages pictóricos, con distintos
métodos y mediante el uso de una gran variedad de materiales brillan-
tes como son las joyas, purpurina, pedrería, lentejuelas, flores de seda
o elementos textiles, crea obras que capturan la belleza y la alienación
del cuerpo queer negro, proponiendo una masculinidad alternativa.
Tell Me reúne una selección de 15 pinturas de su serie más reciente,
Tarot, que se inspira en la práctica adivinatoria de la lectura de cartas.
Partiendo de los tarots más populares: el Tarot de Marsella y el
Rider-Waite-Smith, el artista reinterpreta la lectura del tarot desde la
cultura pop y su propia experiencia. Cada obra de esta serie presenta
un episodio de transformación y alude al diálogo entre el cambio
verdadero y el superficial, ya sea a nivel individual o social, reflexionan-
do sobre el deseo humano de presentarnos exteriormente como seres
contenidos y perfectos, al tiempo que revelan cómo ciertas prácticas
místicas o esotéricas pueden ayudar a adaptarnos a tiempos difíciles.
Las pinturas expuestas representan en su mayoría arcanos mayores.
Para la interpretación esotérica cada arcano representa una imagen
arquetípica con numerosos simbolismos. Por ejemplo, Le Bateleur
[El Mago], una de las cartas más importantes del tarot, representa al
sanador o guía espiritual y tiene que ver con los conceptos de
evolución y transformación. El artista ha sustituido los pentáculos
con los que se le suele representar por Bolas de dragón de una
popular serie de anime de su juventud. El artista es la persona
retratada en la mayoría de ellos o lo son sus familiares como es el
caso de La Impératrice [La Emperatriz] que es su madre. También
encontramos un arcano menor: Page of Wands [Sota de bastos].
Completan la muestra dos pequeñas pinturas: Drawn at Dusk [Saca-
da a la caída de la tarde] y Drawn at Twiligh [Sacada en el crepúscu-
lo] que representan al artista sacando una carta para hacer una
lectura. Nos remiten también a un eclipse, ya que aparecen frente a
un cuerpo celeste en el cielo y tiene que ver con El Sol y La Luna, dos
de las cartas más significativas para el artista.
“Para mí, la serie Tarot tiene mucho que ver con la autorreflexión,
permitiéndome disfrutar de mi propia infancia, de las cosas que
realmente amaba y que ayudaron a formar mi propio lenguaje visual,
al que todavía estoy apegado hoy, con respecto a la materialidad,
referencias y colores”, explica Shimoyama.

THE CAC MÁLAGA presents the first exhibition in Spain of Devan
Shimoyama, one of the most interesting and unique emerging artists
on the North American art scene today, whose works explore queer
and African-American identities while developing personal narrati-
ves. The artist depicts the Black queer male form as both desirable
and desirous, and his choice of unusual materials – his hallmark –
endows his figures with a magical and joyful spirit.
Shimoyama was born in 1989 in Philadelphia and lives and works in
Pittsburgh, USA. With a unique and very personal body of work –
which includes painting, sculpture and installation – he challenges
stereotypes by boldly addressing the complexities of race, gender
and sexuality. In his work he contrasts the darker aspects of reality,
such as racism and police brutality, homophobia and misogyny, with
icons that represent beauty, strength and hope.
A constant feature in his work – in which the role of the body and
self-portraits are of great importance – is the diversity of its
references (to classical painting, mythology, symbolism, drag
culture, queer iconography, animation, fashion, cinema…) and the
manifold aesthetics of his pictorial approach. His compositions,
inspired by the work of classical painters such as Caravaggio and
Goya, exhibit a sharply contemporary expression and sensuality,
interwoven with current themes of mass media and popular culture.
His pictorial collages, employing different methods and a variety of
shiny materials such as jewels, glitter, rhinestones, sequins, silk
flowers and textile elements, create finished works that capture the
beauty and alienation of the Black queer body, proposing an
alternative masculinity.
Tell Me brings together a selection of fifteen paintings from Shimoya-
ma's most recent series, Tarot, inspired by the divinatory practice of
card reading. Drawing on the most popular tarots – the Tarot de
Marseille and the Rider-Waite-Smith deck – the artist reinterprets
card reading from the perspective of pop culture and his own
experience. Each work in this series presents an episode of transfor-
mation and alludes to the dialogue between true and superficial
change, whether on an individual or a social level, reflecting on our
desire as humans to project an outward image of self-containment
and perfection, while revealing how certain mystical or esoteric
practices can help us adapt to difficult times.
Most of the paintings on display relate to the Major Arcana of the
tarot. In terms of esoteric interpretation, each arcanum represents
an archetypal image with numerous symbolic meanings. For
example, Le Bateleur [The Magician], one of the most important
cards in the tarot, represents the healer or spiritual guide and is
related to the concepts of evolution and transformation. Shimoya-
ma has replaced the pentacles with which the Magician is usually
pictured with Dragon Balls from a popular anime series of his
youth. In most of these paintings the portrayed figure is either the
artist himself or a member of his family, as in the case of La Impéra-
trice [The Empress] who is his mother. We also find a minor arcanum:
Page of Wands. Two small paintings complete the exhibition: Drawn
at Dusk and Drawn at Twilight, in both of which the artist is depicted
drawing a card for reading. These pieces also refer to an eclipse,
as they appear in front of a celestial body in the sky and are related
to The Sun and The Moon, two of the most significant cards for
the artist.
“The Tarot series to me is a lot about self-reflection, indulging in my
own childhood, the things that I really loved and that helped to form
my own visual language, that I am still attached to today, with regard
to materiality, references, and colours,” explains Shimoyama.
