Confiesa tu fe en Cristo como Salvador y Señor.

Si crees que Jesucristo murió por tus pecados y deseas recibir nueva vida a través de Él, debes
hacer una oración similar a esta y pedirle que sea tu único y suficiente Salvador y Señor:

“Amante Dios, yo soy un pecador y he sido rebelde contigo de muchas maneras. Yo creo que
Jesucristo murió por mis pecados y que solamente a través de la fe en su muerte y resurrección
podré ser perdonado. Ahora, me arrepiento de mis pecados y pido a Jesucristo que entre a mi
vida y sea mi Señor y Salvador. De aquí en adelante, seguiré al Señor Jeucristo. Muchas
gracias, Señor, por amarme y perdonarme. En el nombre de Jesucristo, amén”.

Después de haber recibido a Jesucristo en tu vida, debes compartir tu decisión con otra
persona y seguir el ejemplo de Cristo, debes ser bautizado por inmersión en tu iglesia local
como una expresión pública de tu fe.

L comienzo de la temporada de
la Navidad, cuando yo era niño,
mi familia comenzaba a buscar
nuestro árbol de Navidad y las diferentes
cajas de todo tamaño que contenían luces
multicolores parpadeantes, tiras de luces
y adornos, tanto comprados como hechos
a mano, y las medias volvían a ocupar
su lugar sobre la chimenea. Todos estos
objetos eran valiosos para nosotros, pero
tal vez el más apreciado fuera un pesebre
con sus figurines. Colocábamos el establo
cubierto de paja sobre la TV. Luego venían
los sabios, los pastores, los ángeles y los
animales. María y José ocupaban sus
puestos en el centro. Finalmente, con
mucho cuidado y como la pieza central,
colocábamos la figura más preciosa de
todas: la del Niño Jesús en el pesebre.
Solo los Evangelios de Mateo y Lucas
incluyen relatos sobre el nacimiento de
Jesús. Marcos comienza su Evangelio con
el ministerio de Jesús ya adulto. Pero el
relato de Juan es especialmente significativo
porque él lo comienza en la eternidad
pasada. Es interesante, entonces, que cuando
una persona comienza a aprender acerca de
Jesús escuchando lo que solemos llamar “la
historia de la Navidad”, el centro de atención
pase de los hechos del nacimiento de Jesús
a la consideración del “principio” (Juan
1.1). Los primeros versículos del Evangelio
de Juan nos ayudan a reconocer que el
nacimiento de Jesús no fue solo un gran
regalo, sino el mayor regalo que jamás se
haya dado en la historia.
Como líder de un grupo de estudio bíblico,
deléitese en la gloria de quién es Jesús.

Jesús es
completamente Dios.
Juan 1.1-4
El prólogo de Juan, que consiste en los
primeros 18 versículos del Evangelio que
lleva su nombre, nos brinda la información
esencial para llegar a comprender la
verdadera identidad de Jesús. Sin embargo,
la verdad es que podríamos dar cursos
semestrales enteros o libros que examinaran
al detalle su significado y su grandeza y solo
serían suficientes para comenzar a hacer
justicia a estos versículos y las verdades que
ellos contienen. A través de la historia hemos
tenido muchos santos que han pasado
toda su vida meditando en el misterio de la
verdad de que el Eterno Verbo de Dios entró
en un mundo finito. Al hacerlo, Jesús, siendo
completamente Dios y completamente
humano, trajo consigo un mensaje que
transforma las vidas.
Juan comienza su Evangelio con las
palabras En el principio. Es evidente que
él quería que el lector recordara Génesis
1.1: “En el principio creó Dios los cielos y
la tierra”. El versículo inicial de la Biblia
comienza con Dios, y de inmediato sigue con
la obra creativa de Dios. Pero Juan enfatiza
que Jesús también estaba presente como
miembro de la Trinidad. Hablaremos más de
esto en unos momentos.
La característica más notable del prólogo
de Juan es su uso de la palabra griega logos,
que se traduce Verbo. ¿Quién es este Verbo
del que habla Juan? El apóstol brinda pistas
todo el tiempo, y el amplio contexto deja en
claro que está hablando de Jesús; pero en el
v. 14 hace una declaración fundamental al
respecto.
Los que estudian la Biblia deben recordar
que Juan escribía tanto para judíos como
gentiles. Para los gentiles, el logos era el
principio impersonal de la razón por la cual
todo existía y hallaba su orden. Por otro
lado, enseguida los judíos relacionarían la
palabra logos con el Antiguo Testamento
y la palabra dabar, que en hebreo significa
palabra. Aquí, el verbo era la expresión
propia de la divinidad en creación, revelación
y liberación. En el conocido comercial
televisivo de E.F. Hutton, la frase clave
era “Cuando E.F. Hutton habla, la gente
escucha”. En la Biblia, cuando Dios habla,
aparece la creación, se humillan quienes lo
escuchan y se liberan las naciones. No hay
obligación de escuchar a Dios, ya que Él nos
ha dado la libertad de elegir no hacerlo. Pero
cuando no escuchamos, los que perdemos
somos nosotros, no Dios.
El primer versículo se completa con tres
afirmaciones cruciales acerca del Verbo.
Primero, en el principio mismo de todas
las cosas (e incluso antes del principio),
era el Verbo. La Biblia no dice que el Verbo
“llegó” o “fue creado”. La idea es que Jesús
existía eternamente, que la historia nunca
ha conocido un instante en que el Hijo de
Dios no estuviera presente. Aquí, Juan hace
énfasis en el carácter eterno del Verbo.
Segundo, el Verbo era con Dios. Esto
tiene dos ideas: relación y separación. Jesús
existió desde toda la eternidad en la relación
más íntima posible dentro de la Trinidad
pero, al mismo tiempo, era separado en su
persona. Así que, Juan destaca la distinción
del Verbo.
Por último, cuando Juan proclama que el
Verbo era Dios, afirma la deidad del Verbo.
Aquí, Juan declaró la última verdad acerca
de Jesús, y dado que Jesús era Dios, todo
lo que se diga con justicia acerca de Dios
también era cierto acerca del logos.
Ningún lector sincero puede dudar que
Juan creyera y afirmara que Jesús era Dios,
total y completamente. El v. 2 refuerza este
pronunciamiento con una repetición: Este
era en el principio con Dios.
Los dos primeros versículos de esta parte
del pasaje de estudio hacen énfasis en la
relación de Jesús con Dios. Ahora, Juan
explica la relación de Jesús con la creación.
Expresado de forma positiva: Todas las

preguntarnos: “¿Quién creó: Dios o Jesús?”

no hubo creación sin Jesús: sin él nada de
lo que ha sido hecho, fue hecho. Jesús, el
Verbo viviente de Dios, mostró su deidad por
medio de su rol en la creación.
Pero la relación de Jesús con Dios y su rol
en la creación no son las únicas evidencias
de que Jesús es completamente Dios. Juan
extiende su argumento para demostrar
la relación de Jesús con la humanidad,
y esto también demuestra que Él no era
simplemente un ser: En él estaba la vida. La
Biblia no dice que Jesús recibiera la vida como
un ser creado. El Verbo poseía la misma vida
con existencia en sí misma que el Creador.
Luego, Juan escribe: “Porque como el Padre
tiene vida en sí mismo, así también ha dado
al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo” (Juan 5.26).

extender vida abundante en la tierra (vea
10.10) y vida eterna en el cielo (vea 3.16) a
aquellos que lo reciben con gozo. Tal vida, dice
Juan, era la luz de los hombres. Jesús ofrecía
y ofrece iluminación espiritual en un mundo
que sin Él sería oscuro.
Una de las más grandes diferencias
entre el cristianismo y otras religiones es la
enseñanza de que Jesús es completamente
Dios. Las afirmaciones de Juan acerca del
Verbo afirman clara y explícitamente la
divinidad de Jesús. En pocas palabras:
no podemos llamarnos cristianos y negar
la deidad de Jesús. Debemos captar
esta doctrina esencial y ser capaces de
defenderla contra cualquier grupo llamado
“cristiano” (como los Testigos de Jehová y los
Mormones) que rechace la idea de que Jesús
era y continúa siendo totalmente Dios.
Pero la aplicación se vuelve muy personal.
¿Cómo podemos nosotros los cristianos
quedarnos tranquilos dejando a Jesús en un
pesebre durante la Navidad si reconocemos
que ese bebé, aunque revestido de carne, era
divino por naturaleza? Si el “niño envuelto
en pañales” (Lucas 2.12) era completamente
Dios, conducto del Padre en la creación,
y poseedor y dador de la vida genuina,
nosotros, como seguidores suyos, tenemos
la obligación de exponer estas grandes
verdades acerca de Él a toda persona y en
todo lugar, ya que todo ser humano necesita
tener una relación con Él. ¿Por qué a tantas
personas en la actualidad les cuesta trabajo
creer que Jesús realmente es Dios?

Juan 1.10-11, 14-15
Los versículos iniciales del Evangelio
de Juan declaran la gran verdad de que
Jesús siempre ha sido y es completamente
Dios. Pero en esos versículos vemos
mucho más acerca de Jesús. Juan enfatiza
para sus lectores que el Verbo divino no
solo era plenamente Dios, sino también
completamente hombre.
Contra las falsas enseñanzas de
algunos grupos en los tiempos del Nuevo
Testamento, que afirmaban que Cristo solo
“parecía” haber tomado forma humana,
Juan enfatiza la verdad absoluta de la
encarnación del Verbo; que Él se convirtió

en hombre. Juan, en el v. 10, usa tres veces
la frase “el mundo” para destacar el triste
hecho de que el Verbo estuvo presente con
su gente (las personas que Él mismo había
creado), pero ellos lo rechazaron.
Primero, Él estaba en el mundo. Juan
repite la idea que vimos en el v. 1 para
enfatizar la naturaleza eterna de Cristo. Él
no fue creado, ni fue parte de la creación.
No vino para una breve visita, sino existió
siempre; incluso antes de hacer el mundo.
Juan, en segundo lugar, reafirma el rol
que Cristo cumplió en la formación del
mundo creado: el mundo por él fue hecho. Él
fue el agente de la creación.
Finalmente, aunque el Verbo siempre
existió y fue fundamental para la creación
del mundo, el mundo no le conoció. Las
personas no lo reconocieron. Aunque es
lamentable, significativo y sorprendente,
la respuesta de la humanidad, en general,
es rechazar a su propio Creador. El v. 11
es todavía más específico. En un punto
determinado de la historia, Cristo vino
a lo suyo, y los suyos no le recibieron. Sin
lugar a dudas, Juan afirma la verdad de la
encarnación. Jesús entró al mundo como
un bebé en su propia nación, Israel. Pero el
pueblo judío lo rechazó.
No debe sorprendernos que aquellos a
quienes damos la buena noticia rechacen
nuestro mensaje. Aunque Jesús siempre
ha estado presente en el mundo como
instrumento de la creación del Padre,
los seres humanos no lo reconocen para
relacionarse personalmente con Él. Y lo
rechazaron, aunque podían ver a Dios en
la carne y podían contemplar su rostro.
Nuestra tarea, simplemente, es ser fieles y
dar a otros este mensaje: Dios vino al mundo
en forma humana para permitir que cada
uno de los seres humanos tenga una relación
íntima y personal con Él. Dios no fuerza
a nadie a creer, así que nosotros tampoco
debemos intentar hacerlo. El hecho de que
Jesús, siendo Dios, se hiciera humano, ¿qué
nos enseña acerca de servir a los demás?
En el v. 14, Juan llega al clímax de su
prólogo, declarando bella y concisamente
la verdad de la encarnación. Vuelve a
usar la palabra logos y, por primera vez,
relaciona explícitamente al Verbo con
Jesús (aunque no lo menciona por nombre).
Como Verbo, Jesús fue hecho carne. Tomó
forma humana y participó plenamente
de la experiencia de la humanidad. En
palabras de Pablo, “se despojó a sí mismo,
tomando forma de siervo, hecho semejante
a los hombres” (Filipenses 2.7). Sin dejar
de ser completamente Dios, Jesús se hizo
completamente humano.
Juan expresa esto, quizá de una manera
más íntima, cuando escribe que el Verbo habitó
entre nosotros. Esto significa literalmente:
“hizo su tabernáculo con nosotros”. Es
probable que Juan recurra a las imágenes del
tabernáculo del Antiguo Testamento, donde la
presencia de Dios descansaba y era visible entre
su pueblo (vea Éxodo 40.34-38). Pero, con la
encarnación de Jesús, la humanidad tuvo la
presencia de Dios en su sentido más pleno, no
en forma de una estructura, sino en la forma
de su Hijo. Al venir a residir entre nosotros
como un bebé nacido en Belén (mediante el
proceso que incluyó su desarrollo en el vientre
de María), Jesús personificó el significado de
“Emanuel, que traducido es: Dios con nosotros”
(Mateo 1.23).
Para aclarar aun más la certeza de
la humanidad de Jesús, Juan afirma: y
vimos su gloria. Él y los otros discípulos
eran testigos oculares de Jesús como
Dios-hombre. Es muy posible que al usar
la palabra “gloria”, Juan se refiriera a los
milagros de Jesús, junto con su muerte y su
resurrección. En y por medio de Jesús, Dios
hizo conocer su presencia, poder y bondad.
Tal vez Juan estuviera aludiendo a la
gloria de Dios que vimos descender en el
Antiguo Testamento sobre el Monte Sinaí
(Éxodo 24.12-18) y sobre el tabernáculo
terminado (40.34-35). Sin embargo,
esta gloria no era visible como una nube
sobre una montaña o un edificio, sino en
la persona del unigénito del Padre. Los
eruditos de la Biblia difieren acerca de si la
gracia y la verdad describen la gloria de Jesús
o el unigénito del Padre. De cualquier forma,
el favor inmerecido de Dios y su verdad se
revelan con más claridad en su Hijo Jesús.
La encarnación de Jesús en carne humana
es una doctrina central del cristianismo.
Juan quería dejar absolutamente claro
para sus lectores la verdad de que Jesús
era completamente hombre y plenamente
Dios. Él citó como una evidencia adicional
el testimonio de Juan el Bautista, que dio
testimonio de que Jesús vendría después
de él, y existía antes que él. Por tanto, Juan
el Bautista reconocía y proclamaba la plena
humanidad y la plena deidad de Jesús.
Nosotros también debemos hacerlo. Muchos
tienden a enfatizar la deidad o la humanidad
de Jesús, pero ambas son ciertas. La
humanidad de Jesús nos da la seguridad de
que Él experimentó plenamente todos los
desafíos que nosotros debemos atravesar.
Pero Él también es Dios. Por eso, es nuestro
sumo sacerdote, que puede simpatizar
con “nuestras debilidades” e interceder en
nuestro lugar, porque Él “fue tentado en todo
según nuestra semejanza, pero sin pecado”
(Heb. 4.15).

necesario.
Juan 1.12-13, 16-18
Hace varios años, en un episodio de una
conocida serie televisiva de temática legal, se
mostraba a un empleado con problemas en
su desarrollo que se había unido a una secta
religiosa. Este hombre llevaba un turbante
al trabajo y, cuando uno de los gerentes de
la firma para la que trabajaba le preguntó al
respecto, él contestó que lo hacía porque era
un hijo de Dios. La respuesta del gerente fue
bastante sentimental, pero al mismo tiempo
muy reveladora, le dijo que todos somos hijos
de Dios. Esta escena de esa serie nos impulsa
a preguntarnos: “¿Quién es, realmente, un
hijo de Dios?” En su prólogo, Juan deja en
claro que Jesús era completamente Dios y
completamente hombre. A continuación
Juan afirma, basándose en la identidad
real de Jesús como Verbo de Dios, que solo
aquellos que colocan explícitamente su fe en
Jesucristo son verdaderos hijos de Dios.
El v. 11 concluyó con un tono deprimente:
“los suyos no le recibieron”. Pero había
esperanza. Juan cambia su atención de los
que rechazaron a Jesús a la buena noticia de
un remanente que sí cree. Afirma la segura
esperanza y la necesidad de recibir a Jesús
para llegar a ser parte de la familia de Dios.
A diferencia de quienes se apartan de
Cristo, a todos los que le recibieron, a los
que creen en su nombre, les dio potestad de
ser hechos hijos de Dios. No podemos hacer
nada para ganarnos un lugar como hijos de
Dios, pero a los que reciben a Cristo, Dios les
da el poder de ser llamados hijos/as suyos.
Dios da esta autoridad y privilegio por su
propia gracia, más que por cualquier obra de
quienes lo reciben. Quienes lo reciben a Él
son adoptados en su familia. Aunque Dios
es Padre de toda la humanidad por haberla
creado, no todos pueden decir que son hijos
de Dios. Solo pueden afirmarlo a quienes han
recibido a Jesús como su salvador.
En el v. 13, Juan utiliza tres descripciones
negativas seguidas de una declaración
positiva para aclarar cómo una persona
experimenta el nuevo nacimiento y se
convierte así en un hijo de Dios.
Primero, quienes lo hacen no son
engendrados de sangre. Nadie se convierte en
hijo de Dios simplemente por linaje o herencia.
Segundo, nadie se convierte en parte de la
familia de Dios como resultado de la voluntad
de carne, es decir, del deseo sexual que emana
de los naturales instintos humanos que Dios
le ha dado al esposo y a la esposa. Finalmente,
llegar a ser hijo de Dios no es resultado de
voluntad de varón. Juan estaba aludiendo
aquí a la decisión de tener hijos que toma una
pareja. Aunque Dios también gobierna ese
proceso, el nacimiento espiritual no tiene
absolutamente nada que ver con ninguna clase
de deseo humano innato.
La declaración positiva es: sino de Dios.
Solo por la voluntad de Dios una persona se
convierte en hijo o hija de Él. Jesús mismo
hizo esta distinción entre nacimiento natural
y el nuevo nacimiento al declarar: “Lo que es
nacido de la carne, carne es; y lo que es nacido
del Espíritu, espíritu es” (Juan 3.6).
La Biblia pasa a explicar qué hace tan
especial a Jesús que una persona debe poner
su fe en Él para tener la salvación. Basándose
en el v. 14, Juan afirmó que de su plenitud
tomamos todos los creyentes. La plenitud
de Jesús es lo que llena; es la fuente de la
bendición de Dios por medio de Cristo como
aquel que es “lleno de gracia y de verdad”
(1.14). Para entender correctamente qué
quería decir Juan al hablar de gracia sobre
gracia, observe la referencia a Moisés en el
v. 17. “Gracia sobre gracia” destaca la idea de
un ejemplo de gracia que reemplaza a otro.
En este caso, la ley por medio de Moisés
fue dada, como acto anterior de la gracia de
Dios, pero la superó la gracia y la verdad que
vinieron por medio de Jesucristo.
Una razón más por la cual Jesús es
completamente necesario para que alguien
se convierta en hijo o hija de Dios es el rol
que Jesús cumple en revelar a Dios a la
humanidad. Juan cita la verdad común
de que A Dios nadie le vio jamás. Es cierto
que Moisés y otras figuras del Antiguo
Testamento tuvieron atisbos de la presencia
divina. Pero Dios mismo le dijo a Moisés:
“No podrás ver mi rostro; porque no me
verá hombre, y vivirá” (Éxodo 33.20). ¡Ver a
Dios en toda su santidad y perfección sería
una sentencia de muerte inmediata! Pero
el unigénito Hijo de Dios vino como Dios-
hombre y le ha dado a conocer.
La palabra “exégesis”, que solemos utilizar,
proviene de un término griego similar que
Juan utilizó para referir que Jesús reveló al
Padre. Jesús explicó, hizo conocer a Dios,
entre los seres humanos. Él mismo le declaró
a Felipe: “El que me ha visto a mí, ha visto al
Padre” (Juan 14.9). Jesús es Aquel que está
en el seno del Padre. Como tal, puede dar a
conocer al Padre plenamente, porque Él lo
conoce totalmente.
Así que, para llegar a ser hijo de Dios, la
persona debe creer en Jesús. Un mensaje así no
cae bien en nuestra sociedad pluralista actual,
ni en medio de las versiones cada vez más
diluidas del evangelio que se encuentran entre
muchos que hoy dicen ser seguidores de Cristo.
Pero sigue siendo cierto (vea Hechos 4.12).
Antes de siquiera intentar enseñar esta lección
de suprema importancia, compruebe si usted
realmente ha recibido a Jesús como su Salvador
y Señor creyendo en su nombre. Desafíe a
los miembros de su clase para que también
lo hagan y destaque que en esta Navidad
los cristianos no pueden —en realidad, no
deben— dejar a Cristo en un pesebre. Él es el
regalo más grande que se haya dado en toda la
historia del mundo, y nuestra responsabilidad
es recibirlo y expandir la buena noticia de Él a
un mundo perdido y agonizante.

S a child, my family would dig into
boxes big and small containing
the Christmas tree, blinking
multicolored lights, sparkling strings
of garland, handmade and purchased
ornaments, and stockings to be hung on
our fireplace mantle. But perhaps the
most treasured item was a nativity scene
made of miniature figurines. We placed
the straw-covered stable on top of the
TV. Next came the wise men, shepherds,
angels, and animals. Mary and Joseph
took their positions in the center. Finally,
we carefully positioned the most precious
figure, the baby Jesus, lying in a manger,
as the centerpiece.
We find a very significant message and
challenge in the pieces of a cherished
Christmas decoration. Nativity scenes
do not tell the entire story of the gift
God gave through the birth of a child in
Bethlehem. We must not leave Jesus in
a stable. If we fail to recognize the entire
identity of the Christ-child, we cannot
fully comprehend just how great God’s gift
of His Son was for humanity. Our culture
loves the idea of Jesus as a cooing infant
wrapped in cloth surrounded by a host of
onlookers. Yet many intentionally reject
His true identity as the Son of God, God in
human flesh, and the Savior of the world.
Only Matthew and Luke’s Gospels
included the birth narratives of Jesus.
Mark introduced his Gospel with Jesus’
ministry as an adult. But John began
in eternity past. John’s prologue is a
complete treasure trove for those needing
to recognize the birth of Jesus was not
only a great gift, but the greatest gift
ever given in history. As teachers, bask
in the glory of Jesus’ identity, dedicate
yourselves to sharing Him with those
most in need of a relationship with Christ,
and challenge your class members to
understand exactly who Jesus is and
commit themselves to be witnesses of His
ministry and mission.

Jesus is completely
God.
John 1:1-4
John’s prologue might be the greatest
passage in the Bible detailing the true
identity of Jesus. Semester-long classes
on these verses and books attempting to
detail their meaning and greatness cannot
do justice to the truths presented by John.
Saints throughout the history of the
church have spent lifetimes meditating
on the mystery of the Eternal Word
entering a finite world both fully God
and completely human for the purpose of
bringing the message of true and lasting
life and the mission of self-sacrificing love.
John opened his Gospel with “In the
beginning.” Seemingly he intentionally
wanted the reader to remember
Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created
the heaven and the earth.” The opening
verse of the Bible begins with God’s
work of creation, and in John’s thought,
it designates this original creation in
contrast to new creation in Christ. The
most striking feature of John’s prologue is
his use of the Greek word logos, translated
word. In fact, the identity of the Word
with Christ is not specifically revealed
until the climactic verse 14. Bible students
should keep in mind John’s audience
most likely consisted of both Gentiles and
Jews. In Greek thought, the logos was the
impersonal principle of reason by which
everything existed and found order. On
the other hand, Jews would immediately
relate the logos to the Old Testament and
dabar, the Hebrew term for word. There,
the word was God’s divine self-expression
in creation, revelation, and deliverance. In
the old E. F. Hutton TV commercial, the
hook line was “when E. F. Hutton talks,
people listen.” In Scripture, when God
speaks, creation appears, listeners are
humbled, and nations are delivered!
Three crucial affirmations about the
Word completed the first verse. First, at
the very beginning of all things was the
Word. The Bible does not claim the Word
“came” or “was created.” The idea is Jesus
eternally existed, that history has never
known even an instant when the Son
was not present. Here John stressed the
eternality of the Word. Second, the Word
was with God. The thought is twofold:
relational and separateness. Jesus existed
from all eternity in the most intimate
of possible relationships within the
Godhead, but at the same time, He was
separate in person. The distinction of the
Word was highlighted. Finally, the deity
of the Word was asserted as John in the
high point of the verse proclaimed the
Word was God. John’s point was to make
abundantly clear that anything and
everything that could be said about God
was true of the logos. No doubt should
ever exist that John believed and claimed
Jesus was completely God. Verse 2 only
underscores by repetition this very
pronouncement.
While the first two verses stress Jesus’
relationship to God, John next explained
the Word’s relationship to creation.
Positively, all things were created through
Him. One might ask, “Who created,
God or Jesus?” Throughout Scripture,
God is always portrayed as the Creator
of the universe, while His Son is the
agent of creation. In other words, God
the Father created everything through
Jesus. (See also 1 Cor. 8:6; Col. 1:16;
Heb. 1:2; Rev. 3:14.) Negatively, John
made the claim of Jesus’ work in creation
even clearer. To dispel any possibility of
creation apart from Him, John asserted
not one thing was created that has been
created. Jesus, the Word of God, displayed
His deity through His role in creation.
But His relationship with God and
creation are not the only evidence Jesus
is completely God. John extended
his argument to demonstrate Jesus’
relationship with humanity proclaimed
He was no mere human being. Instead,
Life was in Him. The Bible does not claim
Jesus was given life as a created being. The
Word possessed the same self-existent life
as the Creator! John later wrote, “For as
the Father hath life in himself, so hath he
given to the Son to have life in himself”
(5:26). Having life in Himself allowed
Jesus to extend abundant life on earth
(10:10) and eternal life in heaven (3:16) to
others. As completely God, possessing life
in Himself, the Word was the light of men,
granting spiritual illumination in a dark
world.

One of the greatest distinctions
between Christianity and other religions
is the faith that Jesus is completely God.
Simply put, one cannot legitimately call
himself or herself a Christian and deny the
deity of Jesus. John’s introduction to the
Word clearly spoke to His divine nature.
As teachers, we must grasp this essential
doctrine and be able to defend it against
any so-called “Christian” group, such
as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons,
who reject Jesus was and remains fully
God. In addition, how can Christians
satisfy ourselves with leaving Jesus in a
manger during the Christmas season if we
realize the infant, though robed in flesh,
was divine in nature? If the swaddling-
clothed baby was fully God, the Father’s
conduit in creation, and Possessor and
Giver of genuine life, it places upon us the
obligation of sharing that great message to
a world in need of a relationship with Him.

Jesus is completely
man.
John 1:10-11,14-15
The initial verses in John’s Gospel declare
the great truth that Jesus has always
been and is completely God. That is only
half the story, though. John stressed to
his readers that the divine Word was not
only fully God, but completely man as
well. Against the teaching of some groups
in New Testament times that Christ
only “seemed” to take on human form,
John drove home the absolute truth of
the Word’s incarnation.
John used world
three times in verse 10 to press home the
sad fact of the Word’s being present with
His people, yet finding Himself rejected.
In the Greek, world can refer to place or
people, depending upon the context. The
Greek here has the world leading each of
three phrases, emphasizing a truth about
Jesus and His relationship with the world.
First, He was in the world. Echoing the
same thought of verse 1, John stressed
the eternal nature of Christ. He was not
created nor was He part of creation. He
did not come for merely a short visit, but
He always existed even before the world
was created through Him. John secondly
reasserted the role Christ played in the

formation of the created order. He was the
agent of creation. Finally, even though He
always existed and was instrumental in
its creation, the world did not recognize
Him. Sadly, the general response of
humanity is a rejection of its own Creator.
Verse 11 particularized the preceding
statements about Jesus. At a distinct
point in history, Christ came to His own,
and His own people did not receive Him.
John distinctly asserted the truth of the
incarnation. Jesus entered into the world
as a baby in His own nation, Israel. Still,
the Jewish people rejected Him.
We should not be surprised when those
with whom we share the good news reject
our message. Even though Jesus has
always been present in the world as the
Father’s instrument of creation, human
beings consistently fail to recognize and
enter into personal relationship with Him.
Our job is simply to be faithful in telling
others the message that God entered into
the world in human form to enable human
beings to have an intimate, personal
relationship with Him.
John reached the climactic point of his
introduction, stating the most concise
definition of the incarnation. He again
used logos and for the first time explicitly
linked the Word with Jesus. As the Word,
Jesus became flesh. He took on human
form, fully participating in the experience
of humanity. In Paul’s words, He “made
himself of no reputation, and took upon
him the form of a servant, and was made
in the likeness of men” and He was “found
in fashion as a man” (Phil. 2:7-8). Although
completely God, Jesus also became fully
human. John more intimately expressed
that Jesus took up residence among us
(John 1:14). A more literal translation
would be “He tabernacled with us.” John
probably drew upon the Old Testament
imagery of the tabernacle, where God’s
presence would rest and be visible among
His people. But with the incarnation of
Jesus, humanity had the fullest sense of
God’s presence, not in the form of some
structure, but of His Son. By taking up
residence among us as a baby born in
Bethlehem, Jesus embodied the meaning
of “Immanuel,” that is, “God is with us”
(Matt. 1:23).
To make even clearer the certainty of
Jesus’ humanity, John stated that His
followers observed His glory. He and the
other disciples were personal eyewitnesses
of Jesus as the God-man. Most likely,
the glory he refers to was Jesus’ miracles
along with His death and resurrection.
God made known His presence, power,
and goodness. It is possible John
hinted at God’s glory descending in
the Old Testament upon Mount Sinai
(Ex. 24:13-18) or the completed tabernacle
(Ex. 40:34-35). But this glory was not
visible on a mountaintop or building, but
in the person of the One and Only Son
from the Father. Bible students differ on
whether “grace and truth” further define
the glory of Jesus or the Son from the
Father. Either way, the unmerited favor
of God and His truth find their greatest
fulfillment in Christ.
The incarnation of Jesus in human flesh
is a central doctrine of Christianity. John
the apostle wanted to stress the truth

the witness of John the Baptist as further
evidence. The Baptist testified that Jesus
was both coming after him and existed
before him. John the Baptist therefore
realized the full humanity and deity of
Jesus. So should we. Many people have
a tendency to emphasize either Jesus’
deity or humanity, but both are equally
true. The humanity of Jesus gives us the
assurance He fully experienced everything
we go through during our lives. As a
result, He is our high priest who is able
to sympathize with our weaknesses and
intercede on our behalf, because he has
been tested in every way as we are, yet
without sin (Heb. 4:15).

John 1:12-13,16-18
Several years ago, a popular legal
drama showed an episode including a
developmentally disabled employee who
had joined a religious cult. The employee
wore a turban into work and, when
questioned by the law firm’s managing
partner about his head covering, answered
that he was a child of God. The managing
partner’s response was sentimental, but
also very telling, when he offered that
we all are children of God. One scene
from a TV series begs the question, “Who
exactly is a genuine child of God?” John
previously made clear in his prologue

Based on the true identity of Jesus as the
Word of God, John went on to assert that
only those placing explicit faith in Jesus
Christ are truly God’s children.
Verse 11 ended on a depressing note.
But there was hope. John turned his
attention from those rejecting Jesus to
the good news of a believing remnant.
In doing so, he asserted the necessity of
receiving Jesus in order to become part of
God’s family. Unlike those turning away
from Christ, to all who did receive Him
He gave the right to be children of God.
Becoming God’s child cannot be earned,
only granted! To those receiving Christ,
God gives the right to be called His sons
and daughters. He grants the authority
and privilege by grace coming from
Himself rather than based on any works
or the recipient. These persons are adopted
into God’s family. While God is the Father
of all humanity from the standpoint of
being their Creator, all people cannot
call themselves His children. Only those
individuals receiving Jesus, who believe
in His name, can make that claim. (See
“Concept Study”)
John asserted how one becomes God’s
child through three negative descriptions
followed by a positive declaration. First,
people are not born of blood. No one
becomes God’s child simply through their
bloodline or heritage. Second, adoption
into God’s family is not the result of
the will of the flesh or sexual desire
emanating from the natural, God-given
human instinct of men and women.
Finally, becoming God’s children does
not result from the will of man. John
referred to the decision to have children
by parents generally. No, it is only through
God’s will people become His children.

version of the good news found among
