MODALES
1. Definición y uso:
Los verbos “modals” son una categoría de verbos especiales.
Ejemplos:
He can speak Chinese. Él sabe hablar chino.
She should be here by 9:00. Ella debería estar aquí a las 9:00.
They might not come to the party. Quizás no puedan venir a la fiesta.
This can’t be true. Esto no puede ser verdad.
Could I use your phone? ¿Podría usar su teléfono?
Shall I open the door? ¿Quieres que te abra la puerta?

1. Ability (habilidad)
1.1. afirmativa
-The fire spread through the building quickly but everybody managed to -
escape.
- El fuego se extendió rápidamente a través del edificio pero todos
conseguieron escapar.
1.2. negativa
- I used to be able to stand on my head but I can‟t any more.
- Yo sabía hacer el pino pero ya no puedo más.
2. Obligation (obligación)
2.1. afirmativa
-I can‟t stay up late. I have to wake up early tomorrow morning. (external)
-I haven‟t phoned Ann for ages. I must phone her tonight. (personal)
-No puedo quedarme hasta tarde. Tengo que despertarme pronto mañana por la
mañana.
- Hace mucho tiempo que no llamo a Ann. Tengo que llamarla esta noche.
3. Advice (consejo)
3.1. afirmativa
-You look tired. You should go to bed.
-It was a great party last night, you should have come.
-Parece cansado. Debería acostarse.

- Podrias intentar de dejar de fumar. Puede que te haga sentir mejor.

-¿Podríamos encontrarnos de nuevo mañana ? (sugerencia condicional)
-¿Qué sugiere que debo hacer? (pedir recomendación)
6.1. afirmativa
-We should invest more in China.
-They should do something about this terrible train service.
-He should resign.
- Deberíamos invertir más en China.
- Deberían hacer algo sobre este servicio de tren lamentable.
- Él debería dimitir.
Nota: para expresar una opinión personal, se usa las frases de introducción “I
think/I don't think”
7.2. negativa
- He got angry because I wouldn‟t lend him any money. (past refusal)
-Damn! My car won't start. I'll have to call the garage.
(present refusal)
- Él se enfadó porque no quise prestarle dinero. (negarse en pasado)
- ¡Caramba ! Mi coche no arranca. Tendré que llamar el taller. (negarse en
pasado)

8. Preferences (preferencias)
8.1. afirmativa
-“How about a drink?” “I would rather have something to eat”.
-¿Te apetece una copa? -Preferiría algo de comer.
8.2. interrogativa
-Would you rather go to the cinema or stay home?
- ¿Prefieres ir al cine o quedarte en casa?
