Introducción
Es imperativo medir el caudal de gas producido de una manera tan precisa que se puede durante las operaciones de
producción porque ese valor se requiere para una operación de proceso eficiente, el reporte fiscal, la planeación
futura y una información de calidad.
Los 3 tipos de medidores mas comunes utilizados en producción son:
1. La unidad diferencial
2. La unidad de cantidad discreta
3. La unidad de flujo másico
A continuación se examinará la unidad diferencial que es la usada en nuestro campo.
Objetivos
Al completar esta sección, debería ser capaz de:
• Describir el principio de operación.
• Entender las precauciones de seguridad que se deben tomar.
• Entender los critérios de performancia de un meter.
Principios de operación
Debido a la complejidad de esta área, el principio de operación de cada medidor se discute bajo la descripción de
cada tipo de equipo.
Las placas de orificio son las que más ampliamente usamos de los elementos primarios por medir el flujo a través de
una cañería que usa el teorema de Bernoullis. El teorema de Bernoullis asume un flujo aerodinámico, pero en la

Un orificio en una tubería representa un cambio abrupto de área para el efluente y esto aumenta la turbulencía
considerablemente. Así se requieren formulas que tienen en cuenta los efectos de flujo turbulento cuando el tamaño
de un orificio para medir una proporción de flujo dada será calculado.
Después de que el flujo ha atravesado el orificio, su velocidad disminuye y esto causa un aumento en la presión.
Esto significa que alguna de la pérdida de presión se recupera. La cantidad de esta recuperación depende de la
proporción del diámetro del orificio, d, al diámetro de la cañería, D.
El diagrama debajo muestra un perfíl de presión en una línea a través de un orificio. Las pérdidas de presión entre
los puntos A y B son debidas a la fricción en la línea. De B a E la presión sube debido entonces a la resistencia al
flujo causado por el orificio. La presión luego cae rápidamente entre E y G porque la velocidad de flujo a través del
orificio aumenta. De G a H ocurre la recuperación. Los puntos que C y F son donde la pérdida de presión es medida
a través del orificio. La presión estática se toma tambien downstream en el punto F.

Performancia
Una incertidumbre (normalmente, pero incorrectamente llamó ' el accuracy') de menos de 3% puede esperarse con
un medidor de orificio correctamente colocado, pero la calidad puede deteriorarse con el uso. El borde afilado del
orificio puede corroerse, la cañería puede ponerse demasiado áspera para permitir un flujo laminar, impurezas
pueden acumularse contra la placa y, externamente la calibración de la célula diferencial puede alterarse. La
inspección periódica de la placa-orificio y la condición interior de la cañería es por consiguiente esencial, la
frecuencia dependiendo de la limpieza y características del fluido y materiales utilizados. Al tomar todas estas
precauciones, el medidor puede ser considerado como el medidor mas fiable que tengamos a nuestra disposición.

Procedimiento de la lubricación
El lubricante de alta temperatura Daniel se utiliza, se proporciona en batones de ½" OD por 2". Se recomienda que
la placa se lubrifique una vez por mes, que la placa sea retirada o no.
1. Abrir la válvula de equalización.
2. Girar la válvula puerta en sentido contrario del reloj a su posición abierta.
3. Levantar el porta orificio hasta que toque la parte inferior de la “clamping bar”.
4. Cerrar la compuerta.
5. Cerra la válvula de equalización.
6. Abrir lentamente la válvula de defogue.
7. Remover la barrilla de metal del engrasador.
8. Colocar grasa y volver la barrilla en su lugar.
9. Enroscar lentamente para inyectar grasa. Si se hace de manera demasiado rápida, la presión alta del
lubricante puede romper el sello de la válvula o alejar la válvula de su asiento.
10. Enroscar a fondo para inyectar todo el lubricante. Si se requiere mas lubricante, repetir pasos 7 a 9.
11. Cerrar la válvula de defogue
12. Lentemente abrir la válvula de equalización.
13. Abrir la compuerta.
14. Bajar lentamente el porta-orificio hasta que se asiente con firmeza en el fondo del medidor.
15. Cerrar la compuerta (1/4de vuelta en el sentido del reloj).
16. Controlar que el medidor lee correctamente.
Remover la placa-orificio
Es probable que cualquier instalación de placa será un reemplazo de placa y no una nueva instalación; por eso
empezamos con el levantamiento de una placa. Siga los pasos 1 a 10 arriba, y luego proceda con lo siguiente.

Durante el periodo de flujo, o sobre todo durante cualquier prueba llevada a cabo, el caudal de gas puede cambiar;
por consiguiente, pueden requerirse tamaños diferentes de placas de orificio. El diámetro correcto de placa se
selecciona por ensayo y error, por lo tanto es importante tener un aparato que permite cambiar la placa-orificio sin
interrumpir el flujo de gas.
Para grabar la presión diferencial, un instrumento llamado registrador de presión diferencial se utiliza. La entrada de
presión alta se conecta a la parte upstream del orificio, mientras la entrada de baja presión se conecta a la parte
downstream del orificio. La presión diferencial a través del orificio se transmite a una celda cuya deformación se
traduce en un movimiento de rotación de un eje. Este movimiento es amplificado mecanicamente y metrializado por
una pluma sobre una carta graduada. La carta gira bajo la acción de un reloj y la presión diferencial se registra en
función del tiempo. La misma carta registra presión estática y temperatura.
