CHORRO DE MAITA

It is an archeological site located at about thirteen kilometers from Guardalavaca Beach, on the road to Banes City in Holguín Province. There is an archeological
cemetery, which was discovered by chance when a farmer was digging a hole to set up an outhouse; he found out some human bones so he let the authorities
know about this, then archeologists came and searched the area. They unburied 168 skeletons of native inhabitants that are now exhibited in the same position
they had been buried, at different depth levels from the ground surface. They also found objects that belonged to the buried people like necklaces, idols, vessel
fragments, etc. A museum was built over the site where the skeletons and objects are exhibited. An aboriginal village, reproducing the life style of the natives,
was set up next to the museum. Visitors can learn about the customary activities of these people: the way they worked the land, the crops they used to grow, how
they fished and hunted and the instruments they used for these purposes. One can also see how their basic dish cassava was elaborated, what their houses
were like, their religious ceremonies, their possessions and the social life in general (marriage, entertainment, etc.). There is a restaurant that offers typical food.
Its main dish is based on roast pork and cheese, usually accompanied by some salad and French fries. There is a souvenir shop where visitors can buy
handicraft and decoration items that are representative of the native aboriginal culture.
