Novena y Rosario On December 9, 1531, while taking a walk

by the hill of Tepeyac, Juan Diego heard a
Guadalupano sweet voice that called to him from the
summit: “Juan Diego, littlest of my children,
I desire so much, I would like that a church
be built for me in this place ...”

Third Apparition
At 6 o’clock in the morning, December 12,
1531, Juan Diego finds the Lady of the
Heavens and she said: “Let nothing trouble
you, nothing disturb you. Your uncle has
already been healed. Am I not here? Am I
not your mother?” Later she sent him to the
hilltop to cut roses. The Virgin touched
them and she sent Diego with the flowers to
Bishop Zumárraga as the requested proof.

1531, Juan Diego encuentra al la Señora del
Cielo que le dice “Que nada te inquiete,
que nada te perturbe, tu tío ya sanó. ¿No
estoy Yo aquí que soy tu madre ...? Y
después de que lo mandó a cortar las rosas,
la Virgen las tocó y lo envió con el Obispo
Zumárraga, para entregarle la prueba
solicitada por este.

Most Blessed Virgin, my Mother, I am
yours. I am here with my heart full of
gratitude and hope. I come to seek your
consolation and protection. I confidently
come to take refuge in your loving bosom as
a Divine Mother and to thank you for all the
blessings with which you have given me.
You have always helped me to resolve my
misfortunes; you have been my
unconditional advocate before your Son,
Jesus Christ, with whom you painfully
suffered when he was crucified for our sins.
I beg you my Mother; continue interceding
to your Divine Son for me, for my family,
and for all those who carry you in their
hearts.
Give me your encouragement, dear Virgin
of Guadalupe, to face life with integrity and
grant me the grace of enjoying your
presence daily, since I feel secure when I
am close to you, protected and confident in
your care.
I am happy being with you. Thank you for
granting me the joy of being at your feet.

has colmado mi vida.
Siempre me has ayudado a remediar mis
males, has sido mi abogada incondicional
ante tu hijo Jesucristo, por quien sufriste

Most Blessed Virgin, accompany us in our
daily work, in our requests, in our pains, in
the difficulties of our lives, so that our
immortal spirit can rise free and pure to the

Defend us from all evil, Mother of Mexico,

choose you as my Queen and Lady. For this
reason I confirm the dominion that you

God who knew how to unite in you such
beauty with exalted purity and such brilliant
and rich elegance with such placid humility.
I remain, my Lady, absorbed in your
beauty. I would like my eyes to be fixed
eternally on you so that my heart would not
allow itself to be swept by another affection.
I will not be able to achieve this desire if
such radiant pendants of which you are
adorned, do not infuse in me an ardent and
fervent charity, with which I will love God
and you with all my heart and with all my
strength, and as my sole reason and end.

tuyas? Benditas mil veces las manos de
aquel Dios que supo unir en tu belleza
peregrina con tal pureza exaltada. Y gala tan
brillante y rica con humildad tan apacible.
Yo quedo, Señora, absorto de belleza tan
amable y quisiera que mis ojos se fijaran
eternamente en tí para que mi corazón no
se dejara arrastrar en otro afecto. No podré
logar este deseo si esos resplandecientes
asiros de que estas adornada, no me
infunden una ardiente y fervorosa caridad,

moon under your feet, always firm in your
devotion and love. May I not suffer the
ebbing of sin and guilt. Instead, may I do
my best in all my obligations, rejecting
everything that could offend God. Amen.

O Most Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe!
When we count all the wonders, what is
impossible for you? Neither the poverty nor
the insignificance of the "ayate" impeded
your image from being so skillfully
embodied, nor have the ravages of time in
more than four centuries been able to
destroy or erase. What more powerful
reason to encourage my trust and plead you
to open the bosom of your mercies, while
remembering the broad power that the
divine omnipotence of the Lord gave you to
favor mortals? Deign to imprint in my soul
the image of the Most High, which will erase
my faults. Don't let my offenses and bad
habits affect your compassion. Deign to only
look at me and that will raise up my hopes,
because if you settle your divine eyes on me,
surely you will sympathize with my pain.

The Voice of the Turtledove
has been heard in our land
At daybreak one Saturday morning in 1531,
on the very first days of the month of
December, an Indian named Juan Diego
was going from the village where he lived to
Tlatelolco in order to take part in divine
worship and listen to God’s command-
ments. When he came near the hill called
Tepeyac, dawn had already come, and Juan
Diego heard someone calling him from the
very top of the hill: “Juanito, Juan Dieguito.”
He went up the hill and caught sight of a
lady of unearthly grandeur whose clothing
was as radiant as the sun. She said to him in
words both gentle and courteous: “Juanito,
the humblest of my children, know and
understand that I am the ever virgin Mary,
Mother of the true God through whom all
things live. It is my ardent desire that a
church be erected here so that in it I can
show and bestow my love, compassion,
help, and protection to all who inhabit this
land and to those others who love me, that
they might call upon and confide in me. Go
to the Bishop of Mexico to make known to
him what I greatly desire. Go and put all
your efforts into this.”

La voz de la Tórtola
se ha escuchado en nuestra tierra
Un sábado de mil quinientos treinta y uno,
a pocos días del mes de diciembre, un indio
de nombre Juan Diego iba muy de
madrugada del pueblo en que residía a
Tlatelolco, a tomar parte en el culto divino
y a escuchar los mandatos de Dios. Al llegar
junto al cerrillo llamado Tepeyac, amanecía,
y escuchó que le llamaban de arriba del
cerrillo: «Juanito, Juan Dieguito.»
Él subió a la cumbre y vio a una señora de
sobrehumana grandeza, cuyo vestido era
radiante como el sol, la cual, con palabra
muy blanda y cortés, le dijo: «Juanito, el más
pequeño de mis hijos, sabe y ten entendido
que yo soy la siempre Virgen María, Madre
del verdadero Dios por quien se vive.
Deseo vivamente que se me erija aquí un
templo, para en él mostrar y prodigar todo
mi amor, compasión, auxilio y defensa a
todos los moradores de esta tierra y a los
demás amadores míos que me invoquen y
en mí confíen. Ve al Obispo de México a
manifestarle lo que mucho deseo. Anda y
pon en ello todo tu esfuerzo.»
Cuando llegó Juan Diego a presencia del
Obispo don fray Juan de Zumárraga,
Franciscan, the latter did not seem to
believe Juan Diego and answered: “Come
another time, and I will listen at leisure.”
Juan Diego returned to the hilltop where the
Heavenly Lady was waiting, and he said to
her: “My Lady, my maiden, I presented
your message to the Bishop, but it seemed
that he did not think it was the truth. For
this reason I beg you to entrust your
message to someone more illustrious who
might convey it in order that they may
believe it, for I am only an insignificant
man.”
She answered him: “Humblest of my sons,
I ask that tomorrow you again go to see the
Bishop and tell him that I, the ever virgin
holy Mary, Mother of God, am the one who
personally sent you.”
But on the following day, Sunday, the
Bishop again did not believe Juan Diego
and told him that some sign was necessary
so that he could believe that it was the
Heavenly Lady herself who sent him. And
then he dismissed Juan Diego.
On Monday Juan Diego did not return. His
uncle, Juan Bernardino, became very ill,
and at night asked Juan to go to Tlatelolco
at daybreak to call a priest to hear his
confession.
Juan Diego set out on Tuesday, but he went
around the hill and passed on the other
side, toward the east, so as to arrive quickly

Juan Diego volvió a la cumbre del cerrillo,
donde la Señora del Cielo le estaba
esperando, y le dijo: «Señora, la más
pequeña de mis hijas, niña mía, expuse tu
mensaje al Obispo, pero pareció que no lo
tuvo por cierto. Por lo cual te ruego que le
encargues a alguno de los principales que
lleve tu mensaje para que le crean, porque
yo soy sólo un hombrecillo.»
Ella le respondió: «Mucho te ruego, hijo
mío el más pequeño, que otra vez vayas
mañana a ver al Obispo y le digas que yo en
persona, la siempre Virgen santa María,
Madre de Dios, soy quien te envío.»
Pero al día siguiente, domingo, el Obispo
tampoco le dio crédito y le dijo que era muy
necesaria alguna señal para que se le
pudiera creer que le enviaba la misma
Señora del Cielo. Y le despidió.
El lunes, Juan Diego ya no volvió. Su tío
Juan Bernardino se puso muy grave y, por
la noche, le rogó que fuera a Tlatelolco muy

Salió Juan Diego el martes, pero dio vuelta
al cerrillo y pasó al otro lado, hacia el
oriente, para llegar pronto a México y que

When Juan Diego reached the peak, he was
astonished that so many Castilian roses had
burst forth at a time when the frost was
severe. He carried the roses in the folds of
his tilma (mantle) to the Heavenly Lady.
She said to him: “My son, this is the proof
and the sign which you will bring to the
Bishop so that he will see my will in it. You
are my ambassador, very worthy of trust.”
Juan Diego set out on his way, now content
and sure of succeeding. On arriving in the
Bishop’s presence, he told him: “My lord, I
did what you asked. The Heavenly Lady
complied with your request and fulfilled it.
She sent me to the hilltop to cut some
Castilian roses and told me to bring them to
you in person. And this I am doing, so that
you can see in them the sign you seek in
order to carry out her will. Here they are;
receive them.”

le salió al encuentro a un lado del cerro y le
dijo: «Oye y ten entendido, hijo mío el más
pequeño, que es nada lo que te asusta y
aflige. No se turbe tu corazón ni te inquiete
cosa alguna. ¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu
madre? ¿No estás bajo mi sombra? ¿No
estás, por ventura, en mi regazo? No te aflija
la enfermedad de tu tío. Está seguro de que
ya sanó. Sube ahora, hijo mío, a la cumbre
del cerrillo, donde hallarás diferentes flores;
córtalas y tráelas a mi presencia.»
Cuando Juan Diego llegó a la cumbre, se
asombró muchísimo de que hubiesen
brotado tantas exquisitas rosas de Castilla,
porque a la sazón encrudecía el hielo, y las
llevó en los pliegues de su tilma a la Señora
del Cielo. Ella le dijo: «Hijo mío, ésta es la
prueba y señal que llevarás al Obispo para
que vea en ella mi voluntad. Tú eres mi
embajador muy digno de confianza.»
Juan Diego se puso en camino, ya contento
y seguro de salir bien. Al llegar a la
presencia del Obispo, le dijo: «Señor, hice
lo que me ordenaste. La Señora del Cielo
condescendió a tu recado y lo cumplió. Me
despachó a la cumbre del cerrillo a que
fuese a cortar varias rosas de Castilla, y me
dijo que te las trajera y que a ti en persona te
las diera. Y así lo hago, para que en ellas
veas la señal que pides y cumplas su
voluntad. Helas aquí, recíbelas.»
He immediately opened up his white
mantle, and as all the different Castilian
roses scattered to the ground, there was
drawn on the cloak and suddenly appeared
the precious image of the ever virgin Mary,
Mother of God, in the same manner as it is
today and is kept in her shrine of Tepeyac.
The whole city was stirred and came to see
and admire her venerable image and to
offer prayers to her; and following the
command which the same Heavenly Lady
gave to Juan Bernardino when she restored
him to health, they called her by the name
that she herself had used: “the ever virgin
holy Mary of Guadalupe.”

Desenvolvió luego su blanca manta, y, así
que se esparcieron por el suelo todas las
diferentes rosas de Castilla, se dibujó en ella
y apareció de repente la preciosa imagen de
la siempre Virgen santa María, Madre de
Dios, de la manera que está y se guarda hoy
en su templo del Tepeyac.
La ciudad entera se conmovió, y venía a ver
y a admirar su devota imagen y a hacerle
oración, y, siguiendo el mandato que la
misma Señora del Cielo diera a Juan
Bernardino cuando le devolvió la salud, se
le nombró como bien había de nombrarse:
«la siempre Virgen santa María de
