Confiesa tu fe en Cristo como Salvador y Señor.

Si crees que Jesucristo murió por tus pecados y deseas recibir nueva vida a través de Él, debes
hacer una oración similar a esta y pedirle que sea tu único y suficiente Salvador y Señor:

“Amante Dios, yo soy un pecador y he sido rebelde contigo de muchas maneras. Yo creo que
Jesucristo murió por mis pecados y que solamente a través de la fe en su muerte y resurrección
podré ser perdonado. Ahora, me arrepiento de mis pecados y pido a Jesucristo que entre a mi
vida y sea mi Señor y Salvador. De aquí en adelante, seguiré al Señor Jeucristo. Muchas
gracias, Señor, por amarme y perdonarme. En el nombre de Jesucristo, amén”.

Después de haber recibido a Jesucristo en tu vida, debes compartir tu decisión con otra
persona y seguir el ejemplo de Cristo, debes ser bautizado por inmersión en tu iglesia local
como una expresión pública de tu fe.

Conocer
¿Por qué este estudio?
Los jóvenes necesitan tener una
comprensión clara de lo que significa
seguir a Jesús. Muchos de ellos tienen
una mentalidad de espectador; van a la
iglesia el domingo y eso es todo. Fuera de
la iglesia, sus vidas no se ven diferentes a
las de los no creyentes. Todos los creyentes
necesitan entender las exigencias radicales
que hace Jesús a sus seguidores. El Sermón
del Monte es la descripción de Jesús de lo
que significa seguirle.
Se desafiará a los jóvenes a conocer
a Cristo. Bajo el término global de
CONOCER, el señorío de Cristo es una
categoría y este estudio llevará a los
jóvenes a descubrir lo que significa ser un
ciudadano de su Reino, bajo su señorío.

en sus espaldas.

conclusión de que los cristianos son muy diferentes
de Cristo?
>>  Piensen en esto: Si tú fueras un cristiano que no
puede hablar, ¿cómo sabrían las personas que eres
un cristiano?

Escucha a Jesús.
Los discípulos vinieron a Él. Y Él los enseñó.

>>  Prepare el terreno para el estudio: Antes de este
acontecimiento, Jesús había estado viajando por
toda la región de Galilea, enseñando, predicando y
sanando a las personas de muchas enfermedades y
dolencias.
>>  Los maestros de ese tiempo solían enseñar estando
sentados.
>>  En este pasaje, ¿a quiénes creen ustedes que estaba
enseñando Jesús: a la multitud o a los discípulos?
>>  No importa a quiénes estuviera Él enseñando,
nosotros necesitamos escuchar lo que Él dijo.
Opción: Enseñanza sobre una colina (Natural)
Si el clima lo permite, piense en la posibilidad de
tener la clase al aire libre, ¡quizás incluso sobre
una colina! No se preocupe por llevar sillas.
Invite a los jóvenes a sentarse alrededor de usted
en la tierra, para que la experiencia resulte lo
más parecida a la de Jesús cuando pronunció el
Sermón del Monte.
Transición: Cuando escuchamos a Jesús,
descubrimos cualidades cristocéntricas que
deben ser evidentes en la vida de cada uno de sus
seguidores.

Jesús describió el carácter de quienes lo siguen
y anticipó las bendiciones que recibirán los que
posean estas cualidades.
>>  Lea Mateo 5.3-12.
>>  La palabra “bienaventuranzas” procede del término
bendiciones en latín.
 ¿Qué creen ustedes que significa ser
bienaventurados?
>>  Dirija la atención a “Las Bienaventuranzas” (ítem
2) de las Ayudas para la Enseñanza. Cada una de
las Bienaventuranzas identifica una característica
o cualidad, seguida por una bendición que
experimentan los que poseen esas cualidades.
>>  Haga que los jóvenes entiendan qué es cada una
de las características y la bendición resultante,
realizando la actividad de igualar que aparece en la
Guía del Alumno. (Respuestas: 1-c, 2-h, 3-a, 4-f, 5-e,
6-b, 7-g, 8-d).
>>  Pida a los jóvenes que se turnen haciendo
escenificaciones graciosas para representar las ocho
características.
 ¿Cómo adquiere una persona las ocho
características de un seguidor de Cristo?
>>  No podemos lograr estas características por
nosotros mismos. Solamente Dios puede cultivarlas
en nosotros, pero debemos querer llegar a ser
personas que posean estas características. Estas
características o cualidades se harán evidentes
cuando demostremos nuestro compromiso de seguir
a Cristo.
 ¿Qué es ser bienaventurado?
>>  Si vivimos de acuerdo con las Bienaventuranzas,
el resto del Sermón del Monte, nuestro estudio del
mes, es lo que serán nuestras vidas.
Transición: Cuando nuestra vida refleja a Cristo en
nuestro carácter, influenciamos al mundo para Él.

Influencia al mundo para

Jesús utilizó dos imágenes para describir la
influencia de sus seguidores en el mundo.
>>  Lea Mateo 5.13-16.
>>  Diga a los jóvenes que hagan una lista en la Guía del
Alumno de los usos de la sal. Haga que descubran
por qué la sal se compara con la vida cristiana.
>>  ¡No solamente debemos ser sal en nuestro mundo,
sino también luz adondequiera que vayamos!
 ¿Cómo puede ser una persona “sal” y “luz”?
>>  Agrupe a los jóvenes en dos equipos: El equipo “Sal”
y el equipo “Luz”. Pida a cada equipo que exprese
ideas en cuanto a las maneras como una persona
puede ser sal (al equipo Sal) o luz (al equipo Luz)
cada día.

cristiano” para iniciar el estudio, repase las listas
que hicieron los equipos. Compárelas con las
características dadas en las Bienaventuranzas.
>>  Desafíe a los jóvenes a repasar las características
o cualidades presentadas en Mateo 5.3-10 y a
evaluarlas tal como se ven reflejadas en sus vidas.
>>  Después de que los jóvenes hayan evaluado las
características, invítelos a escribir una oración de
compromiso de llegar a ser la clase de persona que
Jesús quiere de quienes lo siguen.
>>  Anime a los jóvenes a comentar con la clase, o con
cualquier otra persona, cómo responderían una de
las siguientes preguntas:
 ¿Cómo puedes ser sal y luz en tu hogar? ¿En la
escuela? ¿En tu comunidad? ¿En nuestro mundo?
>>  Termine la sesión en oración, pidiendo a Dios que
ayude a los jóvenes a entender la clase de persona
que Él quiere que sean y a comprometerse a llegar a
ser esa persona.
Opción: Tallado en una vela (Natural)
Lea Mateo 5.16. Rete a los jóvenes a memorizar
este versículo esta semana. Dé a cada joven una
vela y un palillo de dientes. Pídales que tallen
en un lado de la vela Mateo 5.16. Anime a los
jóvenes a colocar la vela en algún lugar, para que
les recuerde memorizar el versículo y ser luces de
influencia para Cristo.
 Comentario

“L
o que más tengo en mi vida
son cosas por mejorar”.
Estas palabras me causaron
una profunda impresión al escucharlas
por primera vez, y las recuerdo con más
frecuencia de la que quisiera. Carl Bates
(ya fallecido), sirvió como pastor de la First
Baptist Church de Charlotte en Carolina
del Norte, desde 1959 hasta 1980, y
también presidió la Convención Bautista
del Sur, desde 1970 hasta 1972. El Dr. Bates
ilustraba esta frase con una historia acerca
de un hombre que salió una noche del hotel
donde se alojaba para asistir a una cita por
allí cerca. Un auto que pasó se metió en un
charco y lo salpicó, pero el hombre pensó
que no era nada. Sin embargo, mientras más
se acercaba a la luz de la calle que estaba en
la esquina, con más y más claridad veía lo
desarreglado que había quedado. Para mí, el
Sermón del Monte de Jesús es como esa luz
de la calle.
El sermón del Señor no debe
desalentarnos, más bien nos ayuda, ya que
nos muestra lo que realmente significa
seguir a Jesús. Es una brújula espiritual que
nos indica la dirección correcta que Él quiere
que sigamos.

Su actitud interior
Mateo 5.1-6
Mateo prepara el escenario para
el Sermón del Monte que Jesús predicó.
Personas de toda Galilea y las áreas
circundantes habían acudido a verlo y
escucharlo, como también buscando
sanidad. En un día determinado, Viendo
la multitud, Jesús subió hasta cierto lugar
en un monte cercano. Los maestros de esa
época acostumbraban sentarse para enseñar,
así que cuando Él se sentó, vinieron a él sus
discípulos y comenzó a enseñarles.
¿Se refiere el pasaje a los discípulos o a la
multitud? Aunque tanto Sus discípulos como
la multitud podían escuchar a Jesús (7.28),
Su mensaje parece dedicado especialmente
a los que Él había escogido para que lo
siguieran.
Pero, sin duda alguna, Sus palabras
revelan a todo aquel que lo escuche lo
que implica seguir a Jesús. La palabra
“discípulo”, en particular, nos da una idea
cabal de lo que significa seguir a Jesús.
Jesús declaró que aquellos que
demuestran ciertas características son
Bienaventurados. No estaba diciendo que
debemos esforzarnos para lograr esas
características y así ganar el derecho de
recibir bendiciones divinas. Más bien se
trata de características que identifican
quiénes, por la gracia de Dios, son
ciudadanos del reino de los cielos. La
designación no implica que sean creyentes
perfectos o completamente maduros
(aunque esta, obviamente, es la meta; vea
5.48). Pero sí indica que, al menos, ya han
comenzado a seguir al Señor. Mientras lo
seguimos no debemos ser pasivos, sino
cultivar activamente las cualidades que Él ha
plantado en nosotros.
Al comenzar nuestro estudio de las
bienaventuranzas, debemos tener en cuenta
que estas no se refieren a ocho grupos
distintos de personas, sino a ocho cualidades
o características que definen a un mismo
grupo, el de los que siguen al Señor.
Las primeras cuatro bienaventuranzas
reflejan actitudes interiores, la primera
actitud es la de los que son pobres en
espíritu. Una persona que es pobre en
espíritu tiene una actitud opuesta a la
arrogancia, el orgullo y la autosuficiencia.
Sí, en el mundo se admira y recompensa
la autosuficiencia, pero en su forma más
independiente es una mentira. Una persona
no puede declararse independiente en el
sentido de servirse solo a sí misma sin pagar
las consecuencias.
Cuando somos pobres en espíritu,
entendemos que no podemos ganarnos las
bendiciones de Dios. Quienes piensan que
pueden agradar a Dios por sí mismos están
ciegos a sus pecados y pasan por alto las
elevadas normas de Dios. Después de confiar
en Cristo quedamos expuestos a la luz de
la verdad de Dios y reconocemos nuestra
enorme necesidad espiritual. Tuvimos un
cambio en nuestra actitud. Reconocimos que
estábamos espiritualmente vacíos y que no
teníamos nada que pudiéramos negociar con
Dios. Solo cuando admitimos esto estuvimos
listos para arrepentirnos y recibir la
salvación mediante Cristo que, en Su gracia,
Dios nos regaló. La pobreza en espíritu es el
preludio para la riqueza de la salvación.
Jesús afirmó que los pobres en espíritu
son Bienaventurados porque de ellos es el
reino de los cielos. (En los evangelios, las
expresiones “reino de Dios” y “reino de los
cielos” son sinónimas). Ser pobres en espíritu
abre la puerta a la gracia de Dios y, después,
también nos permite andar humildemente
junto con Él. Aunque esta ciudadanía ya es
una posesión de los creyentes, los beneficios
plenos se harán realidad cuando Cristo
regrese.
¿Es posible que usted, inconscientemente,
haya pensado alguna vez que ya es lo
bastante espiritual como para vivir para
Cristo en sus propias fuerzas? Pero no puede,
¿verdad? Vivir la vida cristiana requiere la
presencia, la fortaleza y la guía de Cristo.
¿Por qué? En y por nosotros mismos, aún
somos incapaces de complacer a Dios. Pero
cuando descansamos en Él, Él nos ayuda a
atravesar cada día y nos permite hacer lo que
Él desea.
Bienaventurados los que lloran, porque
ellos recibirán consolación. Jesús no
especifica qué clase de llanto es este, así que
puede referirse a todos. Es probable que en
el contexto de las otras bienaventuranzas
la idea principal sea llorar por nuestros
pecados de comisión y omisión. Cuando nos
arrepentimos con sinceridad por haber caído
en pecado, somos consolados nuevamente
con la seguridad de que Cristo ha expiado
todos nuestros pecados. Llorar por el pecado
también incluye sentir profundo dolor
por las actitudes y los actos pecaminosos
de nuestra sociedad y otras del mundo.
Lloramos por los efectos destructivos del
pecado en las multitudes y en determinadas
personas. Parte del consuelo de Dios en
este sentido consiste en la seguridad de
que, al final, Su balanza de justicia estará
equilibrada.
Muchos de nosotros hemos llorado por la
pérdida de un ser querido, o de un trabajo,
ahorros, oportunidades, etc. La pérdida
implica tristeza, no podemos negarlo.
Entendamos, además, que llorar es tan
natural como sangrar cuando nos cortamos.
Si nos cortamos, sangramos; si sufrimos una
pérdida, sufrimos. Es así de simple, así nos
hizo Dios.
La bendición especial para nosotros es
que cuando sufrimos, siendo creyentes, Dios

nos consuela con Su presencia mientras
procesamos nuestro dolor. Nunca nos deja
solos para soportar nuestras penas.
Como con todas las bendiciones divinas,
conoceremos el alcance total y final del
consuelo divino en la eternidad. Es de
esperar que parte de nuestro consuelo
consista en ver cómo Dios entretejió
nuestras experiencias de dolor en Su
propósito eterno para nosotros (Romanos
8.28).
La siguiente actitud es mansedumbre.
La palabra que se traduce como mansos
transmite la noción de ser suave, humilde,
sensible, considerado y cortés. La
mansedumbre se concentra en los demás,
más que en uno mismo. Esta actitud interior
brota de una conciencia espiritualmente
desarrollada de nuestra pobreza espiritual.
Estar conscientes de nuestras fallas
y limitaciones nos ayuda a tratar con
paciencia, bondad y ayuda a las personas que
tienen fallas y tropiezan. La mansedumbre
no es debilidad. Cualquiera que soporte
pacientemente las imperfecciones de otro no
puede ser débil.
Mantener un espíritu manso es un
desafío constante, especialmente cuando
las personas mundanas, dentro o fuera de la
iglesia, nos presionan para que sigamos sus
planes. Una vez más lo repetimos: ser manso
no significa ser un debilucho que cede ante
la presión. En su lugar, confiamos en que el
Señor nos dé la sabiduría y la fortaleza que
necesitamos para representarlo dignamente
en este mundo.
Los creyentes mansos recibirán la tierra
por heredad. Los inconversos, naturalmente,
se burlan de esto. A su parecer, los mansos,
en general, son perdedores y no ganadores.
Nos dicen que abramos los ojos y miremos
a nuestro alrededor. ¿Quién recibe
reconocimiento, promociones y premios?
¿Acaso no son, por lo general, las personas
agresivas, arrogantes, que empujan a un lado
o pasan por encima a los mansos? Parece que
ellos siempre obtienen el reconocimiento.
Entonces, ¿en qué sentido puede la tierra
pertenecer a los mansos? La Biblia indica
que los seguidores de Jesús reinarán con Él
(vea 2 Timoteo 2.12; Apocalipsis 5.10). Esa
promesa se cumplirá cuando Él establezca Su
reino en los nuevos cielos y la nueva tierra.
Entendamos que reinar con Él significa que

nuestras actitudes serán iguales a las suyas.
En el reino de Dios totalmente establecido
no adoptaremos valores ni objetivos crasos y
materialistas. ¡De ninguna manera! Heredar
la tierra, entonces, no puede significar que
cada uno de nosotros poseerá un lujoso
palacio con un enorme terreno y algunas
casas de veraneo en lugares selectos. La
bendición que Jesús pronunció no está
centrada en la posesión, sino en servirle a
Él, de maneras que tal vez aún no se hayan
revelado.
La cuarta actitud es la de los que tienen
hambre y sed de justicia. Esta justicia no
es la justicia de Cristo por medio de la cual
Dios nos ve como creyentes (justificación),
por maravilloso que sería desear esto. Más
bien, se trata del deseo interior de tomar
decisiones correctas, decir las palabras
correctas y hacer las cosas correctas porque
todo eso da evidencia de que Dios está
obrando en nuestras vidas para hacernos
más semejantes a Cristo. Los que tratamos
de seguir a Cristo sabemos que no llegamos a
la medida de lo que Él exige, pero deseamos
lograrlo. Cuando a través del tiempo
andamos fielmente a Su lado, Él nos infunde,
cada vez en mayor grado, el propósito y el
poder para agradarle (vea Filipenses 2.13).
Es cierto que aunque crecemos en rectitud,
en esta vida nunca seremos absolutamente
justos. Así que, ¿en qué sentido se nos
puede llamar Bienaventurados por ansiar la
justicia? Tenemos la esperanza segura de que
seremos saciados. El proceso ha comenzado
y nuestro progreso, aunque limitado, nos
alienta. Pero ese proceso no se completará
hasta la segunda venida de Cristo (1 Juan
3.2). Hasta entonces, que Dios nos encuentre
fieles. Sin duda, Él será fiel a Su obra en
nosotros (Filipenses 1.6).

externas
Mateo 5.7-12
Mientras las primeras cuatro
bienaventuranzas se refieren a actitudes
internas, las últimas cuatro tienen que ver
con relaciones externas.
Ser misericordiosos es perdonar, pero
también es dar una respuesta de amor a los
miserables y desamparados. Como hijos de
Dios hemos recibido misericordia y esto nos
capacita para ofrecerla a otros.
¿Se ha encontrado usted con alguna
persona que estuviera sufriendo una
situación difícil y quiso ayudarla, pero ahogó
su intención con una serie de “razones”
por las cuales sería mejor no involucrarse?
¿No nos ha sucedido a todos? Cuando
actuamos con compasión, somos bendecidos
y bendecimos a otro al mismo tiempo. Las
actitudes de misericordia pueden implicar
dinero, palabras útiles o bondadosas, obras
prácticas o simplemente escuchar con
empatía. Ninguno de nosotros puede dar
misericordia a todas las personas que la
necesitan, pero podemos decidirnos a ayudar
cuando y como podamos.
Los misericordiosos alcanzarán
misericordia. No será porque la merezcan,
el hecho de dar misericordia a otro más
bien demuestra que uno ya ha recibido la
misericordia divina. Mientras más damos,
más tenemos para dar. La misericordia de
Dios fluye a través de los que tienen el hábito
de ofrecer con gracia su ayuda, su consuelo,
su perdón cuando sea necesario.
Después, Jesús dice que son
bienaventurados los de limpio corazón.
Los fariseos eran muy escrupulosos en
sus rituales de lavamiento que los hacían
ceremonialmente limpios. Jesús reveló
la verdad sobre esa patraña, diciendo que
eran como hermosas tumbas por fuera,
mientras que por dentro estaban llenas
de podredumbre (vea 23.27). El corazón
es el centro de nuestro ser: nuestros
pensamientos, nuestros sentimientos,
nuestras intenciones, nuestros valores,
nuestros anhelos, todo. Incluyendo la pureza
sexual y mucho más. Se refiere a quienes
Cristo ha limpiado y dotado de poder por
medio del Espíritu Santo. Tener ese tipo de
corazón nos aparta de actuar con cualquier
forma de engaño, mezquindad o motivos
egoístas.
Ellos verán a Dios se refiere al futuro.
En mi opinión, esto significa que veremos
al Señor cuando regrese (vea 1 Juan 3.2).
Esta esperanza cierta nos motiva a actuar
con corazón limpio. No obstante, aun ahora
podemos verlo con los ojos de la fe. Con
un corazón limpio, lo vemos cada vez más
claro, lo cual quiere decir que lo entendemos,
entendemos Sus caminos y Sus propósitos.
Los pacificadores son bienaventurados,
son llamados hijos de Dios. Todos conocemos
el dicho: “De tal palo, tal astilla”. Dios es
el supremo Pacificador que hace las paces
entre los pecadores y Él mismo por medio de
Cristo. Y Él guía a los pecadores redimidos
a ayudar a que otros se reconcilien con Dios
y entre sí. Los esfuerzos de las iglesias para
evangelizar son buenas oportunidades
para que todos los creyentes actúen como
pacificadores.
Tristemente, no solo es común encontrar
relaciones tensas y rotas entre los miembros
de una familia o un vecindario, sino también
dentro de nuestras iglesias. ¿Quién no
conoce a alguna persona o alguna familia
que se fuera de una iglesia por causa de su
mala relación con otro miembro o grupo?
Gracias a Dios por los que están dispuestos a
ayudar a sanar relaciones entre las partes en
conflicto. Esto requiere un amor persistente
ya que los involucrados pueden descargar su
enojo sobre quien está tratando de ayudar.
Mire a su alrededor. ¿Podría Dios utilizarlo
como pacificador en alguna situación en
particular?
La última bienaventuranza parece
una paradoja. Unir la persecución con la
bendición podría parecer como querer
mezclar agua con aceite. Quizá por esto
Jesús agregó algunos comentarios en los vv.
11-12. Aquí cambió a la segunda persona,
sois, aparentemente, para dirigirse a los
Doce elegidos en particular.
Observemos primero que la persecución
es por causa de la justicia. Jesús, en el v. 11,
define esto aclarándolo: por mi causa. Las
personas que rechazan voluntariamente
a Cristo tienden a rechazar a quienes
viven para Él. Este rechazo puede tomar
forma de insultos, falsas acusaciones y
chismes calumniosos; en casos extremos,
la persecución puede dar lugar a la muerte.
Esto ocurrió con los primeros creyentes
y ha continuado durante los siglos,
especialmente en los países que actualmente
no tienen libertad religiosa. Aquí, en los
EE.UU., muchos de nosotros hemos sufrido
comentarios burlones y sarcásticos, desdenes
y cosas peores. Y en este país la oposición a la
libertad religiosa va en aumento.
¿Cómo son bienaventurados los cristianos
que son perseguidos? Ellos son ciudadanos
del reino de los cielos. Jesús nunca alentó a
Sus seguidores a esconder su fe en Él cuando
sufrieran persecución, sino por el contrario,
les dijo: Gozaos y alegraos. Y agregó que el
galardón de estos creyentes es grande en los
cielos. Jesús puso a los creyentes perseguidos
en el mismo nivel de los profetas que fueron
perseguidos antes que ellos. A los ojos del
mundo no tenían importancia, pero a los
ojos de Dios, eran héroes.
Recuerde que Jesús no quería decir
que debemos esforzarnos y tener estas
cualidades para ser bienaventurados. Lo que
dijo fue que somos bienaventurados porque
estas cualidades, aunque llegan en diferentes
momentos, muestran que somos seguidores
suyos. Sigámoslo en nuestra vida diaria y
permitamos que Él haga que estas cualidades
sean cada vez más visibles en nosotros. Esto
nos permitirá ser una influencia positiva.

Su influencia en el
mundo
Mateo 5.13-16
Jesús destacó la influencia de los
creyentes en el mundo diciendo: Vosotros
sois la sal de la tierra. La sal tiene varios
usos, entre los más importantes hay dos
que son los de preservar y dar sabor. Los
creyentes deben actuar como límites para
la corrupción en el mundo. La sal no puede
preservar la carne si no se frota sobre la
misma. No puede dar sabor a la comida si no
tiene contacto con ella.
Es claro, entonces, que no podamos influir
en las personas mundanas evitándolas.
Debemos ser las personas más rectas,
amistosas, disponibles, consideradas,
responsables y útiles que existan en el
vecindario, en el trabajo, en el equipo.
Nuestra “salinidad” puede ayudar a
controlar el mal comportamiento y también
puede darles a otros sed de Cristo. Seamos
“salados” todo el tiempo, en todas partes.
Dado que Jesús realmente es “la luz
del mundo” (Juan 9.5), nosotros somos
la luz del mundo porque reflejamos Su
vida, que nos imparte el Espíritu Santo
que mora en nosotros. Al igual que una
ciudad se establece sobre un monte para
que se vea, no para que se pueda esconder,
las lámparas se ponen en lugares elevados
para que disipen la mayor cantidad posible
de tinieblas. De esta misma manera los
creyentes, en nuestras actividades diarias,
debemos dejar claro ante todos que somos
cristianos, a medida que hacemos brillar
la luz de la verdad de Dios en un mundo
espiritualmente oscuro.
La palabra que se traduce como buenas en
la expresión buenas obras significa “buenas”
y “atractivas”. Las buenas obras deben
realizarse de manera que sean admirables y
que reflejen la calidad de nuestro carácter.
No tienen como fin llamar la atención hacia
nosotros, sino hacia Dios. Jesús no quiere
que seamos “estrellas” espirituales, Él quiere
mostrarse a sí mismo por medio de la forma
en que vivimos y servimos. Muchas veces
esto implica hablar de Él.
El comienzo del Sermón del Monte
trata acerca de los aspectos básicos de lo
que significa seguir a Jesús. Permita que
las bienaventuranzas lo motiven a vivir
en la práctica lo que Dios ya puso en usted
como hijo suyo. Además, recuerde que
seguir a Jesús no nos lleva a recluirnos,
sino a involucrarnos con las personas que lo
necesitan.

Why This Study?
Students need to have a clear
understanding of what it means to
follow Jesus. Many have a spectator
mentality; they go to church on Sunday
and that’s it. Outside of church, their
lives look no different than the lives
of unbelievers. All believers need to
understand Jesus’ radical demands
of His followers. The Sermon on the
Mount is Jesus’ description of what it
means to follow Him.
Students will be challenged to know
Christ. Under the pillar of KNOW is the
category of lordship, and this study will
lead students to discover what it means
to be a citizen in His kingdom, under
His lordship.

“T
he biggest room I have is
the room for improvement.”
Those words resonated with
me the first time I heard them, and they
come to mind more often than I like to
admit. The late Carl Bates, president of the
Southern Baptist Convention 1970-72,
illustrated this idea with a story about a
man who left his hotel one night to walk
to a nearby appointment. A passing car hit
a puddle and splashed him, but he thought
little damage was done. With each step he
took toward the streetlight on the corner,
however, he could see more and more
clearly just how messed up he was. The
Sermon on the Mount is that streetlight
for me.
The Lord’s sermon is not intended to
discourage us, however, but rather to show
us what following Jesus really means. Thus
it serves as a spiritual compass to keep us
growing and moving in the direction He
wants us to go. Because the Lord seeks to
lead each believer, we rightly can draw two
conclusions: (1) we are on the way, and (2) we
have not yet arrived. In other words, we are
saved by faith in Christ; and we also are in
the process of becoming what He wants us
to be.
As we begin this five-week study on the
Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5–7, join
me in prayer that the Lord will use His Word
to accomplish in us all that He designed it
to achieve at this point in our lives. We start
with the Beatitudes in 5:1-12, which focus on
believers’ basic characteristics.

Listen to Jesus.
(Matt. 5:1-6)
Matthew 4:23-25 sets the stage for
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. People from
all over Galilee and surrounding areas
flocked to see and hear Him, as well as to
seek healing. On a particular day, when
He saw the crowds, He went up to a place
on a nearby mountain (5:1). Teachers of
that day customarily spoke from a seated
position, so He sat down with His disciples
gathered around Him (v. 1). Then He
began to teach them (v. 2).
Does them refer to His disciples or the
crowd (v. 2)? Although His disciples and the
crowd could hear Jesus (7:28), His message
seems targeted mainly to those He had
singled out to follow Him. Still, His words
certainly reveal to all His hearers the real
meaning of following Him. (See “Word
Study,” p. 12.)
Jesus declared people who exhibit
particular characteristics to be divinely
blessed. He was not saying that people
should strive to attain those characteristics
so they could earn the right to tap into God’s
blessings. Rather, those characteristics
identify people who by God’s grace are
citizens of the kingdom of heaven. This
designation does not imply they are perfect,
fully mature believers. It does indicate they
have begun to follow the Lord. As we follow
Him, we are not to be passive but actively to
cultivate the characteristics He has planted
in us.
As we begin to examine the Beatitudes,
we should note that they do not describe
eight separate and distinct groups of people,
but eight characteristics or qualities that
define one group—those who have begun to
follow the Lord.
The first four Beatitudes reflect inner
attitudes, the first of which is “poor in
spirit” (v. 3). Being poor in spirit is opposite
of the attitude of being arrogantly and
proudly self-sufficient, a trait prized and
admired by the world. It signifies we are
unable to earn God’s blessing. People who
think they can please God on their own are
blind to their sins and ignorant of God’s
high standards. When we became open to
the light of God’s truth and acknowledged
how vast is our spiritual need, we have an
attitude adjustment. We realize we are
spiritually bereft and have nothing we can
use to bargain with God. Only when we
admit this are we ready to repent and to
receive God’s gracious gift of salvation in
Christ Jesus. Poverty of spirit is the prelude
to the riches of salvation.
Jesus pronounced the poor in spirit to be
blessed because, as followers of Jesus, the
kingdom of heaven is theirs (v. 3; “kingdom
of heaven” and “kingdom of God” are used
interchangeably in the Gospels). Being poor
in spirit opens the door to God’s grace and
also enables us thereafter to walk humbly
with the Lord. While this citizenship is a
present possession of believers (“theirs”), the
full benefit of kingdom citizenship awaits
Christ’s return.
Do you ever think you have grown enough
spiritually that you can live for Christ on
your own? This doesn’t work out too well,
does it? Living the Christian life requires
Christ’s presence, strength, and guidance.
Why? In and of ourselves, we still are unable
to please God. As we lean on Him, He carries
us through each day, enabling us to do what
He wants. What a blessing!
Those who mourn are blessed, for they
will be comforted (v. 4). Jesus did not specify
what sort of mourning He had in mind,
so it could include all mourning. In the
context of the other Beatitudes, mourning
over our sins of commission and omission
probably should receive emphasis. When we
honestly repent of our lapses into sin, we are
comforted anew with the assurance our sins
all have been atoned in Christ. Mourning
over sin also can include the sinful attitudes
and actions in cultures throughout the world
and around us. We mourn sin’s destructive
effects on multitudes. Part of God’s comfort
in that arena lies in the assurance that in the
end, His scales of justice will be balanced.
Many of us have mourned losses of loved
ones, or jobs, or savings, or opportunities,
and on and on. Losses bring sadness; let’s
not pretend otherwise. Understand too that
mourning is no more related to a lack of
faith than is bleeding when cut. When cut,
we bleed; when hit with a loss, we grieve.
God made us this way. The special blessing
for mourning believers is that He comforts
us with His presence as we work through the
painful process of grief. We are never left
to bear our sorrows alone. As with all God’s
blessings, the full and final extent of that
comfort awaits eternity. Hopefully, part of
our comfort will come in seeing how God
wove our mournful experiences into His
eternal purposes for us. (See Rom. 8:28.)
The next attitude is gentleness. The word
translated meek or gentle conveys the notion
of being humble, sensitive, considerate,
and courteous (v. 5). Gentleness puts the
focus on others rather than self. This inner
attitude stems from a spiritually educated
awareness of our own spiritual poverty.

limitations helps us deal patiently, kindly,
and helpfully with faulty and stumbling folk.
Maintaining a gentle spirit is a spiritual
challenge, especially when worldly folk
within or without the church crowd us
to adopt their agendas. Being meek does
not mean being a pushover or caving in to
pressure. Instead, we are to trust the Lord to
provide the wisdom and strength we need to
represent Him rightly in this world.
Gentle believers will inherit the earth
(v. 5). Unbelievers naturally scoff at this. In
their eyes, the gentle are generally losers,
not winners. They tell us to open our eyes
and look around. Who receives recognition,
promotions, and awards? Is it not usually the
arrogant, aggressive individuals who push
aside or run roughshod over the meek?
In what sense, then, can the earth belong
to the gentle? Scripture indicates Jesus’
followers will reign with Him (2 Tim. 2:12;
Rev. 5:10). That promise will be fulfilled
when He establishes His kingdom in the
new heavens and earth. Let’s understand
that ruling with Him implies our attitudes
will parallel His. In God’s fully established
kingdom, we won’t adopt crass, materialistic
values and pursuits. Inheriting the earth,
therefore, cannot mean each of us will
possess a luxurious palace with extensive
grounds plus a few vacation cottages in
desirable locations. The blessing Jesus
pronounced won’t be centered in ownership
but in serving Him (in ways not yet
revealed).
The fourth attitude is a hunger and
thirst for righteousness (Matt. 5:6). This
righteousness is not the righteousness of
Christ through which God views us believers
(justification). Rather this is the inner desire
to make right choices, say right words, and
do right actions, which is part of God’s work
to make us more like Christ. We who seek
to follow Christ know we don’t measure up
to His standards, but we want to do so. As
we walk faithfully with Him over time, He
instills in us more and more the purpose and
the power to please Him (Phil. 2:13).
Admittedly, though we grow in right
living, in this life we will never be absolutely
righteous. So in what sense are we called
blessed as we long for righteousness? We
have the sure hope that we will be filled
with righteousness (Matt. 5:6). The process

has begun, and our limited progress brings
encouragement. That process won’t be
completed, however, until Christ’s second
coming (1 John 3:2). Until then, may He find
us faithful!

Possess Christlike
qualities.
(Matt. 5:7-12)
While the first four Beatitudes focus on
inward attitudes, the last four concern
outward relationships.
Being merciful involves forgiving, but
it also includes a loving response to the
miserable and helpless (v. 7). As God’s
children we have received mercy, and this
equips us to extend mercy to others.
Have you ever encountered someone in a
distressing situation, had a burning desire to
help, but doused it with a series of “reasons”
not to become involved? Let’s all raise our
hands, for we’ve all done that. When we act
on our compassion, we are both blessed and
become a blessing to someone else. Merciful
actions may involve money, kind and helpful
words, practical deeds, or simply shared
tears. Believers’ mercies to me have included
providing forgiveness for my impatience or
failures, transportation in a pinch, meals
during family illnesses, encouraging letters,
caring phone calls, e-mails, and more. None
of us can show mercy to everyone who needs
it, but we can determine to help when and
how we can.
The merciful will be shown mercy (v. 7).
No, our acts of mercy don’t earn for us mercy
from God or anyone else. Showing mercy to
others rather demonstrates we have received
God’s mercy. The more we give, the more
we have to give. God’s mercy flows through
those whose habit is graciously to offer a
helping, consoling, or forgiving hand where
needed.
Jesus then described as blessed those
who are pure in heart (v. 8). The Pharisees
were scrupulous about performing washing
rituals that made them ceremonially clean.
Jesus stripped away their pretense, saying
that they were as beautiful tombs on the
outside but filled with impurities within
(23:27). Heart indicates the core of our
being—our thoughts, our feelings, our
intentions, our values, our longings—the
whole ball of wax. The word pure includes
sexual purity but much more. It describes
those whose hearts are cleansed by Christ
and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Such
hearts lead us away from acting with any
kind of deceit, meanness, or selfish motives.
“Shall” or “will” is future (v. 8). I take this
as meaning we will see the Lord when He
returns (1 John 3:2). This hope motivates
us to act with pure hearts until then (v. 3).
Now, however, we see Him with eyes of
faith. When our hearts are clean, we see Him
more and more clearly (meaning we better
understand Him, His ways, His purposes).
When we allow impurities into our hearts,
trying to see Him is like looking through
smeared eyeglasses.
Peacemakers are blessed, for they will
be called children of God (Matt. 5:9). That
is a way of saying “like father, like son/
daughter.” God is the supreme Peacemaker,
making peace between sinners and Himself
through Christ. He also leads redeemed
sinners to help others be reconciled to God
as well as to one another. Churches’ outreach
efforts are good avenues for all believers to
act as peacemakers.
Many believers at times may act more
as troublemakers than peacemakers.
Strained and broken relationships are
common in our homes, our churches, and
our neighborhoods. Who hasn’t known a
family who left the church because of being
at odds with another member? Thank God
for those willing to help heal relationships
between alienated persons. That is a godly,
sacrificial task. It requires a determined love
plus a thick skin, for the people involved
may turn their anger on the one trying to
help. Look around you. Could God use you
as a peacemaker in a particular situation?
Remember the price Jesus paid to provide
our peace with God and trust Him to use
you.
The final Beatitude seems paradoxical.
Mixing persecution and blessing seems akin
to mixing oil and water, and we know those
don’t mix at all. Perhaps this is the reason
Jesus added comments in verses 11-12. He
shifted to the second person, apparently
addressing His chosen disciples in particular.
Notice first that the persecution is for
righteousness (v. 10), and in verse 11 Jesus
defined that as because of Him. People who
willfully reject Christ are prone to reject
those who live for Christ. This can include
insults, false accusations, and slanderous
gossip. In extreme cases, persecution may
bring death. This was true of early believers
and has continued through the centuries,
especially in present-day countries that have
no religious liberty. Here in the U.S.A., many
of us have endured scornful and sarcastic
comments, snubbing, and worse.
In what sense are the persecuted
Christians blessed? They are citizens of
His kingdom. Jesus never encouraged His
followers to hide their faith in Him when
facing persecution, but rather to be glad and
rejoice (v. 12). He added that their heavenly
reward would be great (v. 12). He placed
persecuted believers in the same category
as God’s persecuted prophets (v. 12). In the
world’s eyes, they are zeros; in God’s eyes,
they are heroes.
Let’s recall that Jesus wasn’t giving us a
list of qualities toward which we are to strive
in order to be blessed. He was saying we are
blessed because these qualities, though at
various stages of development, demonstrate
that we are His followers. Let us consciously
follow Him throughout our daily lives and
allow Him to make these qualities in us
increasingly evident. This brings us to the
emphasis on being a positive Christian
influence.
(Matt. 5:14). Cities are built on high places
to be seen, not to be hidden. Lamps are
placed on elevated stands so they will dispel
the most darkness. Likewise, we believers
are to be open and obvious Christians in all
ordinary activities, shining the light of God’s
truth in a spiritually darkened world.
The word for “good” in “good works”
means both good and attractive (v. 16).
Such deeds are carried out in a way that is
admirable, and reflect the quality of our
character. They are not intended to draw the
spotlight to us but to God. In other words,
Jesus doesn’t want us to be spiritual show-
offs. He wants us to live and serve in ways
through which God can show Himself. This
often requires a verbal witness or testimony
from us.
The beginning of the Sermon on the Mount
focuses on the basics of what it means to
follow Jesus. Let the Beatitudes encourage
you to live out what God has put into you as
His child. Also remember that following Jesus
doesn’t lead us to seclusion but to involvement
with people who need Him.

Influence the world for
Christ.
(Matt. 5:13-16)
Jesus stressed believers’ influence in the
world by declaring, “Ye are the salt of the
earth” (v. 13). Salt has several uses, but
the most prominent are to preserve and
to flavor. Believers are to act as checks
on the world’s corruption. For salt to
preserve meat it has to be rubbed into it.
For salt to flavor food, it has to be added
to it. We cannot impact worldly people by
avoiding them. We need to be the most
upright, friendly, available, thoughtful,
considerate, and helpful people on the
block, on the job, or on the team. Our
saltiness can help check bad behavior and
also can make others thirsty for Christ.
Let’s be diligently salty.
Since Jesus truly is “the light of the
world” (John 9:5), our being the light of the
world is true in the sense we reflect His life
imparted to us by the indwelling Holy Spirit
believes the teachings but also lives by
them. Philosophers and religious leaders
had disciples. (See Matt. 9:14; 22:15-16.)
At times in the Gospels, “disciples”
describes the Twelve, those Jesus chose to be
with Him for special training, development,
and service (Matt. 10:1; 11:1). At other
times, the term is used in a broader sense
to include people who listened to Jesus but
only seemed to accept His teachings as true.
(See John 6:66.) Luke 6:12-16 reports Jesus’
naming the Twelve and then is followed
by a shorter version of the Sermon on the
Mount in 6:20-49. Matthew reported Jesus’
initial calling of the first four of the Twelve
(Matt. 4:18-22), and his own call (9:9),
though the other seven obviously were with
Him before being named in 10:1-4.
Most likely, therefore, in Matthew 5–7,
Jesus addressed primarily His committed
disciples and secondarily those who were
interested in His teachings but perhaps not
fully committed to Him.
