2 USES
• Use “have to” and “must” to express the idea that something is necessary or obligatory. Sometimes it
does not matter which form is used. In questions, Do you have to ...? is the more common form.
• Use must to talk about an obligation that we impose on ourselves.
Example: I must go to the dentist. (personal sense of obligation, it is necessary)
• Use “have to” to talk about an obligation that is external, that comes from something or someone else.
Example: I have to be there at eleven o'clock. (an appointment, set by someone else)
“Mustn't” and “don't have to” do not mean the same thing.
• Use mustn't to tell someone not to do something because it is wrong, dangerous, or illegal.
Example: You mustn't ride a motorcycle without a helmet
• Use “don't have to” to say that there is no obligation to do something or that it is not necessary.
Example: In some schools, the students don't have to wear a uniform.

READ THIS SAYING:
We can use the Third Conditional to talk about 'impossible' conditions, impossible because they are in
the past and we cannot change what has happened.
Examples:
• If I had had time, I would have gone to see him. But I didn't have time.
• If we had bought that house, we would have had to rebuild the kitchen.

B) Construction
If + past perfect (if clause) would (‘d) have + a verb in participle (main clause)
If you had studied hard, you would have got good grades.
If I had had a lot of money, I wouldn’t have worked anymore
Notice that the main clause can contain 'would', 'could' or 'might.
Examples:
• If I had seen him at the meeting, I would have asked him. (But he wasn't there so I didn't.)
• If I had seen him at the meeting, I could have asked him. ( But he wasn't there so it wasn't possible.)
• If I had paid more attention in class, I would have understood the lesson.
Also notice that sometimes the 'if clause' is implied rather than spoken.
• I'd have done it. ("if you had asked me but you didn't.")
• He wouldn't have let him get away with that. ("if he had tried that with me.")
