1.- SINOPSIS
/ SYNOPSIS
When journalist Manuel Cueto is hired to type novelist Joaquin Goñez’s last book, his presence
provokes an avalanche of feelings that bring Joaquin to the edge of emotions and memories that
had lain dormant in the solitude of the last stages of his creative life.
Accustomed to years of loneliness, Joaquin finds in the young journalist a bridge to the forgotten
years of his youth in the 60’s and 70’s, during his wild years in Buenos Aires. Argentina had been
witness to the mistakes made in the passage to adulthood, the memories of old friends, the
meaning of loyalty, the influences of cinema and jazz, the taste of first love and the experiences of
the many which followed and the intimate relationship with his parents, particularly with his mother
Roma, a strong, intelligent woman, a supporter of his youthful ideals.
It is to Roma to whom Joaquin owes his free, bohemian spirit and the aspirations shared with her in
the shadow of the memory of his father
will awaken in Joaquin the desire and the impatience to recover all he had, so far, believed lost.

/ JOSÉ SACRISTÁN
José Sacristán began his professional life as an actor in 1960. Throughout these years he has
worked with directors such as: Adolfo Aristarain, Fernando Fernán Gómez, Luis García Berlanga,
Francisco Regueiro, Pilar Miró, Jordi Grau y José Mª González Sinde, among others.
He has worked in over 125 films.
As I walked into my drama class (one day in the month of July), the director of the school, Hugo
Midón, greeted me and asked how old I was. I said I was 12. Then he asked my coach, Mauricio
Ottaviano, if I could audience for Adolfo Aristarain. He said yes. Hugo called my parents to make
sure they agreed and they accepted.
I read a text in English in front of a camera. After that, I had two more interviews, one with Susú
Pecoraro and another one with Gustavo Garzón (my parents in the film). Finally, Adolfo said I had
been selected to play the role of Joaco. Every single time, I was treated like a god.
As far as the crew is concerned, they are the utmost. They all took care of me as if we were one
big family. In what refers to "Adolf", no one has as much peace and tranquillity as he… he is a
great "maestro" and I was lucky enough to start my acting career with him.

Her parents wanted to name her Eva. But, as she was born on the 17th of October, they thought it
would be too much of a burden, since she'd be celebrating her birthday on the day of Peronist

Marina includes in her curriculum another six films, in two of which - "Natural" and "Estrella del Sur"
- she had starring roles. Yet, she confesses her first love is theatre.

“Roma”, me contesta.

After a brief conversation we began to work. They were hard months, dynamic, creative, full of
discoveries, of complicated decisions, of endless adjustments. Adolfo found the formula to tell his
story and I tried to give the extensive material coherence with the valuable help of Kathy Saavedra.
When, in a relatively short time, the story had been written, Adolfo had already commenced
filming.
The movie began to grow and the used pages of the screenplay began to fill the waste
baskets. It is always like that. The script is a guide which is useful, as a precise instruction manual,
for the construction and exhibition of the story. It includes “everything”, but “everything” must be
visualised and timed. Faces, wardrobe and mannerisms must come to life; that´s why the main
characteristic of a script is its transitory nature. Once used, a screenplay is worthless. Yet, a large
part of the creative process lies in its pages... One writes, one films, one edits. When telling the
story and setting it on paper, one thinks of all the instructions and indications which will be given to
22
the professionals who take place in the filming process and then, in fragments, one films what is
already a representation and an appearance of real life. The final editing will give us the exact
dimension of the results achieved.
It is a hard task and, as Conrad, the Polish writer said: “Life is short and truth lies in the
distance.” To surprise, to capture in a bold moment in the course of time an ephimerous phase of
life, is only the beginning of the job. A task begun with tenderness and faith must rely in presenting
a fragment of life without hesistation or fear in front of everyone, in the spotlight of sincerity. The
essence of truth must show its true colors, its true form, its vibrations, its mobility. With a little skill
and luck one can, at times, attain a sincerity so perfect as to awaken in the hearts of the spectator
the vision of pain or pity, of fear or jubilation wrapped in a sense of unbreakable solidarity; a
solidarity of mysterious origins in the work, in the happiness, in the uncertain destiny which links all
men together and all humanity with the visible world it inhabits.”
One afternoon of a spring day, I receive a call from Adolfo in Buenos Aires...

Amores realizados, amores frustrados,
traiciones, lealtades, sacrificio, rencillas familiares, muertes repentinas, apremios económicos,
/ DIRECTOR’S NOTES
The essence, the core of what is told here is absolutely primitive, ancestral and well known: the
love of a mother for her son.
There are no great events, just minor happenings of importance only to those involved; things which
alter their simple existences. Fulfilled loves, frustrated loves, betrayals, loyalties, sacrifices, family
spats, sudden deaths, financial difficulties, travel, escapes and the eternal fear of the future, the
fear of surviving with dignity.
A mother who shows herself little conventional when she’s obliged to choose between giving up or
fighting for the survival of her family. Joaquin, her son – also known as Joaco – is her only child.
The family is the typical Buenos Aires mix of Italian and Spanish (Basques): Goñez is the father’s
family name and Di Toro the mother’s.
26
The placid existence of this middle class Argentinean family in 1954, with a secure and stable future
ahead, is brought to a sudden halt with the death of the father. After this event, the mother sets
herself a single objective which gives her reason to continue living even after losing the man who
gave meaning to her life.
In a time of rigid morals and conventions accepted without discussion, she breaks with tradition
confronting both families and doing what is necessary to give her son a future. She pushes barriers
with the strength of her common sense and intelligence, with her capacity to blur the fine lines of
accepted protocol. She knows she must not allow her son to lose his status in the middle-class,
that nothing must change even at the expense of her own sacrifice. For him, she can live a
fictitious life, thus protecting him without shame or guilt. Her life has been lived, now it’s the turn of
her son, Joaquin.
But her son does not respond to all he is offered: he’s a dreamer, a bad student, undisciplined and
lazy. He’s not interested in lucrative careers. Instead he wants to write and immerses himself in
the bohemian atmosphere of Buenos Aires in the 60’s. He doesn’t know what he will do with his
life. He wants to travel the world, be free, experience adventures. He’s the black sheep throwing
overboard the efforts of his mother. What fills him with guilt is Roma’s lack of reproach in the face
of his disobedience; her acceptance that her son wants a different life, even at the expense of her
fear.
After a period of freedom, Joaquin will eventually return to his city to fulfil what he believes is his
mission, his debt, even if it is too late for his mother to know.
