CLIMATE ACTION
Consequences in Colombia
The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies of Colombia, IDEAM,
says that historical evidence shows a significant increase in droughts and extreme rainfall in
the last thirty years, and an increase of about 0.9 degrees Celsius is forecast for 2040 and
2.4 degrees Celsius at the end of the century in the country's temperature.
According to the institute, 100 percent of the municipalities of Colombia have some degree
of risk from climate change, and in 2040 25 percent will be at high and very high risk of
suffering strong impacts.
Last year, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development published the
document for decision-makers of the National Policy on Climate Change, which sets out
the national goals of low-carbon and climate-resistant development, to reduce the risks and
seize opportunities.
Colombia, faced with this objective of action for the climate, committed to three actions:
• The first corresponds to carrying out actions to guarantee effective disaster management,
• The second action refers to the fact that by 2030 the 32 Departments that make up the
country have implemented adaptation and mitigation initiatives to climate change in their
planning and territorial development instruments.
• The third action is the design of the climate change action plan and the implementation of
the greenhouse gas-GHG reduction and low-carbon development strategy.
Emission reduction
Design of the Climate Change Action Plan and implementation of the GHG reduction and
low-carbon development strategy. By 2022, 36 million CO2 expected to have been
reduced.
