Accidents at home are more common than we imagine, a fall in the bathroom, blows with the furniture in the house,
accidental cuts, burns, ingestion of toxic substances, etc. The most important thing is to act quickly and in the most
appropriate way depending on the accident that has occurred. Having a first aid kit nearby will be essential in
emergencies.
Domestic accidents are the third leading cause of visits to hospital emergency services by the older population. In
addition to the physical consequences, accidents at home have important psychological consequences: fear, anxiety,
etc. Sometimes, although we do everything possible to avoid them, accidents do occur, hence the importance of
knowing how to act and do it quickly and calmly so that the consequences are minimal.
accidents in the home claim a great number of lives in addition to many people with disabilities and injuries of all kinds.
After traffic accidents, they are the second cause of mortality, mainly in minors and older adults.
Remember that accidents are avoidable in more than 90% of cases, let us forget that they are the product of chance and
that if we follow some recommendations and avoid risky situations we can preserve the integrity of our families, among
the most important risks we find the following:
• Falls.
• Burns.
To prevent falls:
• Doors, balconies, windows that give access to areas of risk of falling, must have a locking system that prevents their
opening to children.
• Get help to carry bulky packages, even if they are not heavy.
• Do not use defective ladders or lower them on your back. The use of stairs must be prohibited to children.
The main causes of poisonings, allergies and irritations are usually: Medicines, cleaning products, insecticides and garden
products, paints, solvents and adhesives, fuels (and products derived from combustion), perfumery and cosmetic
products, alcoholic beverages.
• Accidents caused by these products are, in general, a consequence of their ingestion and, more rarely, of their
inhalation or contact with the skin.
• Properly label the containers and if possible keep the products in their original containers.
• Avoid using containers of food products, or those used for water or soft drinks.
• Place as much as possible protections around those objects that are hot and that are necessarily accessible.
• Select and use objects with insulating grip elements (handles, handles, etc.), in good condition.
• Wear insulating gloves or mitts to move hot objects or handle inside a live oven.
• The handles of pans, pots and pots must not protrude from the kitchen cabinet.
• Handle rockets, firecrackers and cartridges with care and keep them out of the reach of children.
