When we use remember followed by ing, we mean having memories of something. An action we
did in the past that we can still visualize in our heads.
Example
I remember playing football with my friends after school when I was a child.
(Recuerdo jugar al fútbol con mis amigos después de la escuela cuando era niño).
There might be someone in the house because I don’t remember leaving the door open.
(Puede que haya alguien en la casa porque no recuerdo haber dejado la puerta abierta).
En cambio, usar remember más infinitivo implica recordar algo que tenías que hacer. Algo que era
tu responsabilidad llevar a cabo.
Instead, using reminder plus infinitive implies remembering something you had to do. Something
that was your responsibility to carry out.
Example
Forget
La lógica es la misma que con remember. Forget con ing se refiere a algo que hiciste y de lo que ya
no te quedan recuerdos. Lo normal es que aparezca en futuro.
The logic is the same as with remember. Forget with ing refers to something you did that you no
longer have memories of. The normal thing is that it appears in the future.
example
En cambio, forget tiene otro significado cuando lleva un infinitivo. En tal caso, quiere decir que no
te has acordado de hacer algo que tenías que hacer.
Instead, forget has another meaning when it carries an infinitive. In that case, it means you didn't
remember to do something you had to do.
example
Regret
En este caso, no es que tengamos un significado diferente de la misma palabra. Es que, a la hora
de traducir, tenemos que usar palabras distintas. Regret más ing se traduciría como arrepentirse.
Esto es, desear cambiar algo que hiciste en el pasado.
In this case, it's not like we have a different meaning of the same word. It's just that when it comes
to translating, we have to use different words. Regret more ing would translate as repenting. That
is, wishing to change something you did in the past.
example
Por otro lado, seguido de infinitivo, regret sería lamentar. Es como una manera más formal y
educada de dar malas noticias.
On the other hand, followed by infinitive, regret would be regretting. It's like a more formal and
polite way to give bad news.
example
Stop
La forma más frecuente es usar stop con ing. De esta manera, de lo que hablamos es de dejar de
hacer algo. Es decir, la acción descrita por el segundo verbo es la que finaliza.
The most common way is to use stop with ing. This way, what we're talking about is to stop doing
something. That is, the action described by the second verb is the one that ends.
example
Por otro lado, si lo utilizamos con el infinitivo, lo que expresamos es que dejamos de hacer algo
con la intención de hacer otra cosa. Es decir, que la acción descrita por el verbo que va después de
stop no es la que termina sino la que empieza.
On the other hand, if we use it with the infinitive, what we express is that we stop doing
something with the intention of doing something else. That is, the action described by the verb
that goes after stop is not the one that ends but the one that starts.
example
Estaba corriendo y tenía sed, así que me detuve a beber un poco de agua.
We stopped to look at the map because we were lost.
Mean
En este caso, mean seguido de infinitivo tiene el significado de tener la intención de hacer algo.
In this case, mean followed by infinitive has the meaning of intending to do something.
example
Por otro lado, mean junto al ing viene a significar algo así como conllevar, involucrar, requerir o
significar en función de la frase.
On the other hand, mean next to the ing comes to mean something like entail, involve, require or
mean depending on the phrase.
example
Go on
La forma más común de usar este verbo es seguida de ing. En tal caso, significa continuar haciendo
algo.
The most common way to use this verb is followed by ing. In such a case, it means continuing to
do something.
example
Please, go on reading.
En cambio, go on como uno de los verbos seguidos de infinitivo tiene un significado diferente. Es
un poco difícil de dar una traducción exacta en español, pero podríamos decir que significa algo así
como «a continuación» o «más adelante».
Instead, go on as one of the verbs followed by infinitive has a different meaning. It's a little hard to
give an exact spanish translation, but we could say it means something like "next" or "later".
example
The actor made his debut at the age at 18. He went on to win 3 Oscars.
She was a minister for 10 years. She then went on to become the Prime Minister.
He had a successful professional career in sports. After retiring, he went on to work on TV for
many years.
Tuvo una exitosa carrera profesional en el deporte. Después de retirarse, pasó a trabajar en
televisión durante muchos años.
Try
Antes de un infinitivo, la traducción de try es intentar. Es decir, algo (generalmente difícil) que
tienes la intención de realizar, pero no sabes si serás capaz o, si se usa en pasado, significa que no
lo fuiste.
Before an infinitive, the try translation is to try. That is, something (usually difficult) that you
intend to do, but you don't know if you'll be able to or, if used in the past, it means you weren't.
example
My brother tried to open the door but in the end he had to call the locksmith.
Mi hermano trató de abrir la puerta, pero al final tuvo que llamar al cerrajero.
Con ing, mucho menos frecuente, la traducción sería más bien la de «probar a». Esto es, llevar a
cabo una acción que sabes que podrás hacer, pero sin saber si obtendrás los resultados esperados
o si te servirá para algo.
With ing, much less frequent, the translation would be rather that of "try a". That is, take an action
that you know you can do, but without knowing if you will get the expected results or if it will do
you any good.
example
If your computer isn’t working well, you should try turning it off and on again.
I’m not sleeping well, so I’ll just try drinking less coffee.
