original, proyectado por
Herzog & de Meuron en
1999 sobre una antigua
fábrica —cerrada en 1972,

The extension of the
original museum, a project
by Herzog & de Meuron
dating from 1999 on an old
mill that was closed down
in 1972 after successive
transformations since
it was erected in 1860,
discreetly joins the brick
structures along the dock.

The new structure takes
its cue from the existing
buildings, rounding them off
to form a harmonious whole.
It consists of three parts of
33.5, 30.5, and 27.5m in
height. Two of them contain
the exhibition areas, and the
third the access, utilities, and
art handling facilities.

the design of the new
tower – with office space
for 3,100 employees –
relates explicitly to the
studio’s first high-rise for the
pharmaceutical company in

El nuevo complejo comercial de Coal Drops
Yard en el corazón de King’s Cross, junto al
Regent’s Canal, se desarrolla a partir de los
antiguos almacenes ferroviarios del siglo XIX
en los que se recibía y clasificaba el carbón que
llegaba desde el norte del país. Construido por
la oficina londinense de Thomas Heatherwick y
recientemente inaugurado, el proyecto amplía
las cubiertas a dos aguas de los depósitos
—apoyándolas en una estructura nueva e
independiente entrelazada con la preexisten-
te—, que se elevan y se estiran para unir los
dos viaductos generando un nuevo espacio
suspendido sobre el patio y cubriendo una
amplia superficie de espacio público.
Coal Drops Yard
The new Coal Drops Yard shopping district,
located in the heart of King’s Cross next to
Regent’s Canal, has been created through the
refurbishment of two old rail warehouses built in
the 19th century to receive coal for London as it
arrived from the North of England. The design
of Thomas Heatherwick, recently inaugurated,
extends the gable roofs of the warehouses, rest-
ing them on a new, independent structure inter-
twined with the preexisting. The roofs rise and
stretch to link the two viaducts, generating a new
area over the yard and sheltering a large por-
tion of the double-height space beneath, which
becomes the central point of the development
and can also host concerts and performances.

 Lina Bo Bardi
La Fundación Juan March presenta la primera
exposición organizada en España sobre la figu-
ra de Lina Bo Bardi (Roma, 1914 - São Paulo,
1992), una muestra que busca plasmar el pano-
rama artístico y cultural del Brasil de la segun-
da mitad del siglo xx, planteada en continuidad
con la que dedicó hace diez años a Tarsila do
Amaral, máxima representante de la vanguar-
dia ‘antropofágica’ brasileña de los años 1920.
Lina Bo Bardi, quien compartió las inquietudes
sociales de aquella artista, luchó por darles una
respuesta tangible valiéndose de su naturaleza
polifacética en un proceso inverso a la antro-
pofagia, proponiendo transformar la cultura
europea a través de la mirada latinoamericana.
‘Tupí or not tupí’
The Fundación Juan March presents the first
exhibition in Spain on the figure of Lina Bo Bardi
(Rome, 1914 - São Paulo, 1992). The show
wishes to reflect the artistic and cultural pan-
orama of Brazil in the second half of the 20th
century. ‘Tupí or not tupí’ is presented in continu-
ity with the exhibition dedicated ten years ago
to Tarsila do Amaral, the main representative of
the Brazilian anthropophagy movement of the
1920s. Lina Bo Bardi shared the social concerns
of this Brazilian painter, and strove to give them a
tangible answer using her multi-faceted nature in
a process inverse to anthropophagy, and which
sought to transform European culture through
the Latin American gaze.

 Roger Grasas
Roger Grasas (Barcelona, 1970) ha sido el
ganador del Premio Descubrimientos PHoto-
ESPAÑA 2018 con ‘Ha Aretz’ (‘la tierra prome-
tida’), una serie realizada en siete años sobre
los paisajes bíblicos de Israel, Palestina, Egipto,
Líbano, Jordania, Siria y Turquía que revela la
yuxtaposición entre el legado histórico y las con-
diciones contemporáneas —la globalización,
el tecno-capitalismo, el turismo o la guerra—.
Junto a otro de sus proyectos, ‘Min Turab’, este
sobre los países del Golfo Pérsico, el barcelo-
nés nos invita a reflexionar sobre la mutación del
paisaje, la sociedad y la cultura de unos lugares
en los que conviven las costumbres ancestrales
con los espacios posmodernos.
Transformed Landscapes
Roger Grasas (Barcelona, 1970) has won the
Descubrimientos PHotoESPAÑA 2018 Prize
with ‘Ha Aretz’ (‘the Promised Land’). The
series, completed over seven years in the
byblical landscapes of Israel, Palestine, Egypt,
Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey, reflects
how historical legacy and contemporary condi-
tions – globalization, techno-capitalism, tour-
ism, or war – are superimposed. In another
of his series, ‘Min Turab,’ taken in the Persian
Gulf countries, the photographer documents
– and invites us to think about – the mutations
of landscape, society, and culture in places
where ancestral traditions and postmodern
spaces coexist.

Toyo Ito será el autor de la nueva sucursal
del Hermitage en el puerto de Barcelona. Los
promotores del museo han anunciado que han
encargado el diseño al japonés —que ya ha
construido varios edificios en Barcelona, como
las Torres de la Fira de L’Hospitalet de Llo-
bregat o el Hotel Suites Avenue del Paseo de
Gracia—, a fin de impulsar un proyecto que
no acaba de despegar. La nueva propuesta,
muy diferente a la original presentada hace dos
años, plantea un edificio de formas sinuosas,
en hormigón blanco y vidrio, con una altura de
25 metros y una superficie construida de unos
16.000 metros cuadrados. La Autoridad Portua-
ria de Barcelona dispone de un plazo de ocho
meses para su aprobación, después de lo cual
el Ayuntamiento debería conceder la licencia de
obras. Si finalmente sale adelante, el Hermitage
de Barcelona pasará a formar parte, junto a las
de Ámsterdam, Kazán, Ferrara, Vladivostok,
Víborg, Omsk y Vilna, de la lista de sucursales
del gran museo de San Petersburgo.
Ignacio Vicens y Emilio Tuñón son a
partir de ahora Miembros Internacionales del
RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects), un
honor que concede cada año la institución a
Toyo Ito will design a new branch of the
Hermitage in the port of Barcelona. The proj-
ect developers announced that they have
commissioned the design to the Japanese
architect – who has completed several build-
ings in Barcelona, such as the Fira Towers in
L’Hospitalet de Llobregat or the Hotel Suites
Avenue on Passeig de Gràcia – with the ob-
jective of giving a final boost to a project
that hasn’t quite taken off. The new project
is very different from the original scheme
presented two years ago, and consists of a
sinuous building in white concrete and glass,
rising 25 meters high, and with a built area
of 16,000 square meters. The Port Authority
of Barcelona now has eight months to ap-
prove the project, after which the City Council
should issue the building permit. If it finally
gets the go-ahead, the Hermitage Barcelona
will join Amsterdam, Kazan, Ferrara, Vladi-
vostok, Vyborg, Omsk, and Vilnius on the list
of branches of the grand museum of Saint
Petersburg.

Richard Meier ha anunciado que se retira-
rá de la actividad diaria del despacho, aunque

1934, Meier fundó su estudio en 1963 y desde
entonces ha desarrollado más de 130 proyec-
tos en diferentes países de América, Europa y
Asia, todos ellos con un inconfundible estilo —
protagonizado por el rigor geométrico, la clari-
dad espacial y la luz—, que le llevó a ganar el
Premio Pritzker en 1984. A partir de ahora será
Bernhard Karpf, hasta ahora director de la
oficina de Nueva York y colaborador de Meier
desde 1988, quien lidere la firma, mientras Mi-
chael Palladino continuará dirigiendo la sede

management of daily activities of his studio,
though he will remain available to colleagues

añadiendo: «Estoy orgulloso de lo que hemos
logrado juntos durante los últimos once años, y
espero ser testigo de cómo la Escuela continúa

so con Harvard y con el mundo los próximos
años». El arquitecto iraní-estadounidense, na-
cido en Teherán en 1954, ha manifestado su
intención de volver a las tareas docentes de la
Escuela después de un año sabático.

stated Mostafavi, and added: “I am proud of
what we have accomplished together over
the past 11 years, and I look forward to wit-
nessing the School continue its collaborative
ethos and engagement with Harvard and the
world in the years to come.” The Iranian-
American architect, born in Tehran in 1954,
intends to return to teaching and research
after a sabbatical.
