Conclusion

Einige Vorlesungen über die Bestimùmung des Gelehrten; GA I/5 28 y 145, System
sobre filosofía del derecho (GA I/3 320 y 342; I/4 75, 100, Grundlage des
Naturrechts) y moral (GA I/5, 167 y 197, System der Sittenlehre).
‘Primat der praktischen Vernunft’ in Fichtes Grundlage der gesamten
Wissenschaftslehre”, Fichte-Studien, N° 10, 1997, pp. 253-271). F. Neuhouser,
teórica bajo un mismo principio (cf. Neuhouser, F., Fichte’s Theory of
Subjectivity, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1990, pp. 8 y 29-31).
práctica” (GA I/2 65, Rezension Aenesidemus).

(GA I/2 404 y 432).
Fichte-Studien, N° 10, 1997, p. 77; J. Beeler-Port, “Zur Stellenwert der
Sólo a

identifying those aspects of the human mind that allow for the
intuition and cognition of an objective world. In the course of
his analysis of consciousness, Kant claims that appearances
are to be regarded as nothing more than representations and
that time and space are only sensible forms of intuition and
not determinations given as existing by themselves, or condi-
tions of objects viewed as things in themselves.2
If transcendental idealism is nothing but a complete
analysis of consciousness, or the I, as J. G. Fichte calls it, then
there is no need or warrant for reference to anything beyond
the I.3 According to Fichte, transcendental idealism provides
a schema of the human mind as a whole, which includes,
as Kant stipulated, a thorough account of the universal
and necessary mental activities that allow us to experience
the empirical world.4 Thus, Fichte argues that the concept
of being is purely derivative insofar as all consciousness is
based upon and conditioned by self-consciousness.5
For Fichte, nothing can be an object of conscious-
ness but myself, beyond the self, there can be no thing in
itself to account for experience.6 The central task of Fichte’s
Jena Wissenschaftslehre is answering the question: “How do
I discover myself?”.7 Discovering myself involves an act of
thinking that refers to an intellectual intuition of myself as

self-determining.37
Likewise, Kant claims, only by means of an original
spontaneity does the self count as an intellect and thus, we
must represent this activity in order to view ourselves as
intellects. Nonetheless, we cannot directly grasp, or intellec-
tually intuit, our self-determining activity. The original syn-
thetic unity of apperception yields self-consciousness, but
this consciousness entails no knowledge, which requires the
determination of the object according to the form of inner
intuition.
In the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant calls our aware-
ness of the moral law a fact of reason, because we have no
preceding awareness of freedom and because what it com-
pels is not based on experience. He argues that if we were
given immediate consciousness of freedom of the will, the
moral law would be an analytic proposition, but since this
immediate consciousness would require an intellectual
intuition, which we do not possess, freedom cannot be pre-
supposed. Thus, the moral law is simply the undeniable, and
indeed, the “sole fact of pure reason”.38
In the Jena Wissenschaftslehre, Fichte uses intellec-
tual intuition in reference to four distinct ideas: 1) the real
37 “Now since I do not have another self intuition that give the determining
in me (I am conscious only of the spontaneity of it) prior to the act of
determination, as time does in the case of the determinable, I cannot
determine my existence as that of a self-active being; all that I can do
is represent to myself the spontaneity of my thought, that is of the
determination, and my existence is still only determinable sensibly, that
is, as existence of an appearance”. Critique of Pure Reason, trans. Norman
Kemp Smith, New York, St. Martin’s Press, 1965, p. 169 (KrV B 158).

52 Self-reverting activity involves a movement of transition from a state of
determinability to determinacy. See WLnm-K Section 2, and WLnm-H
Section 2, GA IV,/2. In the nova methodo, Fichte employs the “principle of
determinability” to produce a detailed examination of the determinate
and determinable aspects of the I, which is characterized in terms of its
real (self-determining) and ideal (representing) activity. For the original
discussion of the principle of determinability, see Solomon Maimon,

the object in question is necessarily represented as some-
thing objective – that is, as something of such a nature that
in relation to it I (the subjective in me) am “entirely depen-
dent and thoroughly constrained”,30 in the sense that “I
have to consider myself purely as a cognizing subject and,
in this cognition, entirely dependent upon objectivity”.31 In
other words, even if what is at stake is the representation of
subjective action (i.e. of something started and determined
by what is subjective in me, so that what is objective is deter-
mined by what is subjective, and not the other way around),
the very representation of subjective action requires the
representation of something objective, that is of something
that is supposed to be there regardless of whether it is rep-
resented or not – and indeed so much so that, in this case,
what is subjective (my representation of it) “is supposed to
be determined by what is objective, and not vice versa”.32 And
this is why Fichte speaks of resistance – and indeed of resis-

33 N.B.: The point is not that the object of my efficacious action must be
something that is there independently of any representation (as if I
had access to any such thing), but rather that the representation of my
Wirksamkeit must take the representation of its object as something
resulting from and corresponding to what is there regardless of whether it is
represented or not.
34 SSL, GA I/5 25; FSW IV 7.
243 | Fichte and the Body in Action
But what does this mean? First, to avoid any possible mis-
understanding, it should be underlined that according
to Fichte the said features are what must characterize the
object of my efficacious action insofar as it plays this role (i.
e. insofar as it is the object of any such action). Put another
way, the point is that, regardless of whether it may play other
roles and therefore present other features, as long as it is
represented as something subject to my Wirksamkeit (as long as
it is represented as the object of meine Wirksamkeit) it is and
must represented as mere Stoff.
Secondly, it should be borne in mind that Fichte is
referring to two kinds of resistance, not just to one. On the one
hand, as pointed out above, the object of my Wirksamkeit must
resist what Fichte terms the ideal activity (ideale Thätigkeit):
we cannot represent the object of one’s Wirksamkeit without
representing it as something that impinges itself upon one’s
Vorstellung and binds one’s Vorstellung to what is there any-
way. But, on the other hand, Fichte is also referring to the
object’s resistance to the reale Thätigkeit36 –his point is that,
even if the object is represented as mere Stoff, it must be
assigned at least some degree of resistance to real activity i.e.

12). Incidentally, it should be noted that what we are dealing with here is
Fichte’s 1798 answer to a question raised by him in the second of his 1794
(“by what
authority does man call a particular portion of the physical world his body?
how does he come to consider this body as belonging to his Ego, whereas
it is altogether opposed to it?” (BG, GA I/3 34; FSW VI, 302). The translation
is borrowed from Fichte, J. G., The Vocation of the Scholar, tr. W. Smith,
London, J. Chapman, 1848, pp. 26-27. It is almost needless to add that:
a) much of what Fichte says on this topic in the SSL has a close parallel
both in his GNR (particularly in its first part) and in the Wissenschaftslehre
nova methodo, and b) the latter focus on other important aspects of the
question. Moreover, there are also other significant developments in Part
II of the SSL itself. But a complete analysis of all relevant aspects would go
far beyond the scope of this paper. We must concentrate on Fichte’s 1798
introductory remarks and leave out everything (or almost everything) else.

70 It is to be noted that in his introductory remarks Fichte leaves out his own
views on the organized body and on the connection between what he terms

71 In other words, my body is where the two realms –the realm of subjectivity
(I-hood, my activity, my Zweckbegriffe and my will) and the realm of
objectivity (the realm of resistance to what is subjective, i.e. the realm of
resistance to me, to my activity, to my Zweckbegriffe, and to my will)– come
into contact with each other.
261 | Fichte and the Body in Action
***
Now, all this may give the impression that one’s body is just
a particular link in the middle of this very complex set of
representations: a representation among many others, a
particular form of declension des Verhältnisses des Subjectiven,
und Objectiven zueinander: something circumscribed and
therefore isolable.
But this impression proves to be misleading.
On the one hand, Fichte’s point is precisely that my
body is not just an intermediate instance between the
more subjective and the more objective components of the
72 Put another way, my body stands out as being at the same time a) something
opposed to subjectivity (I-hood, my activity, my Zweckbegriffe and my will) –
for it is Stoff: it belongs to the realm resistance to what is subjective, it is
made of resistance to me, to my activity, to my Zweckbegriffe, and to my will –
and b) something equated with subjectivity (something equated with me, with
my activity, with my Zweckbegriffe and with my will). Fichte does not put it in
these terms, but it can be said that what distinguishes my body is the fact
that it has, as it were, the nature of an oxymoron.
262 | M. Jorge de Carvalho
***
74 Or, to put it in the terms used by Fichte, my body is not just an Ansicht of the
said Verhältnis (of the “relation of what is subjective and what is objective
to each other”) among the other Ansichten Fichte refers to. The point is
that this particular Ansicht –my body– is such that it both recapitulates and
anticipates all the others.
266 | M. Jorge de Carvalho
other; for my body plays the said role in the realm of Stoff
precisely because it is equated with me – that is, because it is
my body.75
***
But this is not all. There are still two further points to take
into account.
The first has to do with finitude viz. with the fact that
my body is finite. As mentioned before, my body represents
a “bottleneck”, so to speak, in at least two senses. On the
one hand, the sphere of my articulated body (the “inner key-
board” of what Fichte terms the immediate “starting points”
of my action: the sphere of Stoff directly subject to my will) is
much narrower than the realm of my Zweckbegriffe – and
indeed of my will. On the other hand, the sphere of my artic-
ulated body (the part of the realm of Stoff that is directly sub-
ject to my will) is also immeasurably smaller than the whole
realm of Stoff. As a matter of fact, it comprises only a very
tiny portion of it.
Let us take a closer look at this.
On the one hand, the point is that the sphere of my
immediate action is limited: it does not extend throughout
75 In other words, Fichte puts his focus on the kind of centred multiplicity
Hierocles alludes to in his famous concentric circles (Stobaeus, Anthologium,
IV, ch. 27, sec. 23) – basically the very set of phenomena Heidegger later
termed das Umhafte. See notably Heidegger, M., Gesamtausgabe 61, 96 f.,
129; Gesamtausgabe 62, 91 ff.; Gesamtausgabe 63, 86, 102; Gesamtausgabe 64, 20
ff.; Gesamtausgabe 20, 230 f., 308 f.; SZ, 101 ff. On the connection between
Fichte’s views on this subject and Stoic oikeiosis, see Carvalho, M. J., “The
Concept of Drive in the Sittenlehre (1798) – Fundamental Aspects of Fichte’s
‘Doctrine of Oikeiosis’”, in Philosophy Today N° 52, 2008, pp. 298-310.
268 | M. Jorge de Carvalho
the whole realm of Stoff. The latter is divided in two, not only
because, as mentioned before, it comprises both what can
be changed and what cannot be changed,76 but also because
it falls into two parts: a) the realm of what is directly subject
to my will, and b) the realm of what is not directly subject to my
will.77And this is what Fichte’s characterization of the various
points my articulated body is made of –namely their charac-
terization as “starting points”– is all about: they are not only
points of intervention in the realm of Stoff, they leave room
for and give rise to further intervention or further action (further
transformation of the realm of Stoff). In other words, the
point is that there is no such thing as a sphere of direct inter-
vention as wide as the whole realm of Stoff: there is no such thing
as a total body. Or, as we can also put it: a significant part of the
realm of Stoff is not my body.78 But, on the other hand, this is
not all; for what characterizes my articulated body is not only
the fact that it is just a part of the realm of Stoff: it is rather the
fact that it represents only a very small part of the said realm.
And the question is: is this just a matter of fact or is there
something more to it? In Fichte’s view it is more than just a
matter of fact. The relative smallness of one’s body is intrinsi-
cally related to the possibility of further actions viz. of complex
actions. The greater the sphere of direct intervention (i.e. the
greater the sphere corresponding to my body), the smaller
the room left for the continuation of my action viz. for further
76 This equally holds true for my body: as Stoff, it includes both elements.
77 In the final analysis, this second division amounts, of course, to a
subdivision of the realm of what can be changed.
78 The fact that there is a sphere of direct intervention does not in itself mean
that this sphere must be finite. In this sense, my body could be infinite. And
the point is that it is not.

I. Wissen – knowing
that Fichte’s procedure consists in taking this hidden art as the very motor
of the conceptual genesis, including the categories, so that the aim of the
philosophical activity is to bring into light those hidden activities.
30 This treatment of the I, finite consciousness, as actually derived from a
certain force that is prior to the constitution of its own consciousness,
represents a remarkable conceptual innovation that Jean-Marie Vaysse

In this text, Fichte tries to deduce a priori from the nature
of human reason the necessary invention of language. He
advances the idea of an a priori history of language whose
Ariadne’s thread is the drive (Trieb) of unity with oneself that
pushes the human to constitute relations of communica-
tion when faced with signs of the existence of reason out-
side him; these relations of communication prompted by the
Trieb of unity always take more complex forms until result-
ing in concepts through which the human will, for the first
time, try to thematise his own conceptual activity – here is
the point where one encounters the fundamental problem
posed by philosophical language.
According to Fichte, this problem manifests itself in
a very striking way in the notion of the “I”. In effect, when
we try to reflect on the source of the operations through
which objectivity is constituted, we are led to the super-sen-
sible idea of a Soul or an I as something that could not itself
be an object; however, once we try to represent it, we put it
outside us, meaning that we “submit it to the laws accord-
ing to which objects are represented outside us, to the forms
of sensibility”, we are in that fashion, remarks Fichte, led to
“an evident contradiction […]: reason wants the I to be rep-
resented as incorporeal and imagination wants it to appear

2. La exposición de lo Absoluto
11 WL-1804-II, FSW X 98, GA II/8 21.

reconfigurarlo como voluntad común (GNR § 16, GA I/3 435; FDN 225-226),
caracterizada esencialmente como totalidad orgánica (GNR § 17 Cor., GA

material de cada uno de los ciudadanos (GNR § 18, GA I/4 22; FDN 275), y

I/4 91-92; FDN 349-350).
55 GGZ, FSW VII 7, 14; CEC 23-24, 28-29.

tations about the function and sense this concept had in his
inaugural Grundlage.
In this manner, since the turn of the century, from
his Wissenschaftslehre 1801/2 onwards, Fichte adopted a radi-
cally new conceptual framework, one that included not only
Wissen (knowing) as its central subject of interest, but also
absolutes Wissen (absolute knowing) and, as the most prob-
lematic instance, das Absolute (the Absolute) – with capital A.
Not sufficing, Fichte’s development of this discussion takes
a second, more striking conceptual transformation when,
at the private lectures in his own living room from 1804, his
philosophical discourse turns to the relation between Seyn
and Denken (Being and Thought), when not directly to the
concept of God. Even at first glance, regarding such con-
cepts,6 we could presume how this almost Hegelian vocabu-
lary might create interpretative problems to Fichte’s idealist
project. In fact, it is well known that a major part of the lit-
erature about Fichte’s late philosophy offers some kind of
metaphysical or ontological reading of it.
On the other hand, we find a radically different tone
in some of Fichte’s last contributions. Of course there is,
at the Berliner period, still a fichtean tentative of grasping
the connection between the Absolute and its image, taking
the incipient argument developed in 1801 to a much deeper
with the idea of the Absolute. Let’s see if there is a way out of
this labyrinth.

But the main question still remains: how can the Doctrine of
Science guarantee the correspondence of content between
our finite knowledge and the Absolute? How can knowl-
edge break into the absolute closure of Being without simply
assuming this correspondence? Is it enough to comprehend
knowledge as knowledge, the image as image, and from this
self-determination of knowledge as appearance only, as
non-subsistent, to define its manifested content as consti-
tutive of the Absolute itself? Would it be sufficient to fill the
gap of the hiatus irrationalis with an argument of analogy, or
using conceptual metaphors? In fact, for a strict transcen-
dental proof or deduction of this relation, as Fichte aims in
***
One thing is for sure: Fichte, in all his many and quite dis-
tinct versions of the Wissenschaftslehre, has the same pro-
found insight to reveal. If philosophy should explain, to
recover a platonic motif, the relation between the Absolute
and its manifestation, the relation of being or essence with
its ex-sistence, or the coming of diversity through unity,23 this
task must be realized from inside knowledge as the self-im-
aging of knowledge, from the live perspective of an I or
consciousness realizing knowledge, from the proper act of
knowing. In this sense, all paths from the labyrinth, be they
as hollow as our concepts, be they as obscure as our intu-
itions, lead to the same unifying point: the immanent per-
spective of Fichte’s Doctrine of Science, a perspective that he
more than once relates to “the freedom of inner intuition”.24

argue that „the absolute I”, “I am” and “the I originally posits its own
being” refer to different aspects of the first axiom, especially when taking
Fichte’s later works into account. As the nature of the foundation of the
Wissenschaftslehre is of minor importance for my argument though, I will
leave the subtleties of Fichte’s discussion aside.

25 Dating back to the earliest reception of the work by Maimon and Reinhold,
and continued in for instance Allison’s work, transcendental idealism has
commonly been identified with Kant’s theoretical philosophy. Although of
utmost importance for understanding the first part of the Critique of Pure
reason, I take it that this focus tends to overlook or even obscure the role
of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason within the broader framework of his entire
project. See on this thesis De Boer, Karin, “The Vicissitudes of Metaphysics

the Kantian plan, albeit with different results, bears the dan-
ger of blurring the individual characteristic of Kant’s notions
of a system and obscuring at the same time the originality of
Fichte’s work.
In order to highlight the difference between Fichte’s
and Kant’s notion of a metaphysical system with regard to
its idealistic nature, I will shortly summarize Kant’s posi-
tion here.
In the introduction to his first Critique, Kant famously
states that the Critique of Pure Reason, although containing
an architectonic to a metaphysical system, merely serves
as a “propaedeutic to a System of Pure Reason”.27 It is thus
clearly not the aim of the first critique to present a system,
but rather to prepare the latter. In what follows I will try to
elucidate Kant’s idea of a System of Pure Reason on the basis
of his elaboration of this issue in the first critique.
In his chapter on the Architectonic of Pure Reason,
Kant states that

Conclusion

cas poseen orden, profundidad y utilidad.

sobre [algo]) (GWL, GA I/2 409, FSW I 276), “Einfluß” (influjo o influencia)
(GWL, GA I/2 408-409, FSW I 276) y “Eindruck” (impresión) (GEWL, GA I/3
155, FSW I 344).
Ciencia (GWL, GA I/2 408, FSW I 275; GEWL, GA I/3 143-144, FSW I 331-332).
Abstract Realism”, op. cit., p. 101): “In reply to the charge, first raised by
Dieter Henrich and reiterated by Manfred Frank, that Fichte, even though
he was the first to successfully challenge the dyadic, reflective model of self-
consciousness, failed to remain true to this insight and again and again
fell back into the discredited position that separates the subject and object
of consciousness, the act of self-positing from the consciousness of this
act, and is therefore guilty of reifying the I as a quasi-substantial ‘ego’, one
might reply that it is not Fichte who is guilty of this dualism and reification
so much as it is the conscious I itself!”.

Wird nun dennoch fortgegangen, was,
neuer Anfang. So ist Fichtes absolutester, unbedingter Grundsatz: A

fundamental” (SCDC 15-16, UBWL, GA I/2 114).
13 SCDC 13, UBWL, GA I/2 112.
fundamento-raíz, Grund, roots y fundaciones”, Deleuze, Gilles y Guattari,

neue Realismus offenkundig alt.
gar sprachphilosophisch adoptierte postmoderne Konstruk-

Folgt man
nämlich den einschlägigen Re- und Dekonstruktionen der
neueren und neuesten Zeit, dann soll Descartes Schöpfer
eines merkwürdigen philosophischen Programms gewe-
sen.
