geoglyphs designed over the Nasca desert. The Nasca lines were discovered
The Nasca lines were studied by several researchers and archaeologists over
time, who have given different theories about them, we have some of those
theories:
Julio Cesar Tello's most outstanding student and Toribio Mejia Xesspe is
considered the person who discovered the Nasca Lines. His theory says that
the lines are Sacred Roads or Seques (Religious Roads) that led us get to
ancient times, this area was the place of visiting of the aliens who were doing
interstellar trips, and the lines were built like runways for the aliens´ ships. The
ancient Nasca People made these lines thinking that these mysterious visitors
could come back again to this area but they never came back. Many

Mary Reiche`s Theory (1971), María Reiche was a scientist woman from
Germany who was born in 1903. Maria dedicated herself to the study of these
Nazca lines and everything that surrounds them, María Reiche's theory is about
the Astronomic Calendar, following Maria´s theory these Nazca lines are
actually the biggest calendar known in the history of the world. She studied the
measurements and the relation with the stars. This calendar theory affirms that
the Nazca culture used each figure and line to know the time of each season,
as well as the rainy season time and the best times for the harvests.
Masato Sakai`s Theory (2004), this theory explain that the straight lines that
are part of the famous drawings of the Nasca Desert, could be elaborated to
show existing links between villages in the region. Masato Sakai says that the
Nazca lines were roads to the ancient cities of Cahuachi. At that time, the
citadel of Cahuachi was a religious center, important and famous for its temples
and pyramids. According to this theory, the lines would be a road to the city or a
series of signs how to find the most important ceremonial center in the ancient
time.
The lines meant for the Nasca civilization like a great ceremonial center, a place
of pilgrimage to worship their divinities, these figures can be seen only from the
form or lifestyle. All these representations were related to the daily life of the
Nasca civilization and their magical and religious world which is also included in
their representations.
We can affirm that these lines and figures were a great ceremonial center due
to the evidences that have been found in this place, fragments of potteries
found in the geoglyphs and trapezoids, which indicates that it was a center of
such as the spider, the monkey, the hummingbird, the chaucato, etc. These
figures belonged or were made by the ancient Nasca civilization, which have a
The ancient Nasca people to make the geoglyphs had to remove the stones
from the entire surface, as we can see is a rocky area, this whole layer of
stones has been sedimented for a lot of years ago due to climatic factors, in this
case the rain that came down from the high Andean areas and cover practically
part of this area. In the place there are signs of droughts, old dry rivers that
have passed through there. All these stones have been brought by different
huaycos (avalanches) years ago and that`s why most of these area are rocky.
The technique used to design the lines and geoglyphs was the extracting
removing or extracting the dark stones in this way a clearer surface is created
when removing the stones, and lines that define the figures are formed. These
figures become grooves in low relief since they are not so deep, they have a
depth of 4 to 12 centimeters.
The ancient Nasca people used different materials that were essential to make
the lines and geoglyphs that exist in the Nasca desert. One of the main
materials they used to draw a line was the Huarango sticks which they placed at
different points accompanied by the ropes that were tied in the Huarango sticks,
these were used to draw a straight line from one point to another. Once this was
done, the Nascas proceeded to clean the part drawn with the rope by means of
the extracting technique, this way they designed the lines or figures on the flat
Another of the materials used are the mounds of stones that served as
important points when drawing a line or the design of a figure. Camelid leather
bags were also used to transport the stones from one place to another.
The conservation of the lines is due to various factors among them is that
Nasca is a very dry area and only small precipitations fall that are minimal and
do not affect in any way the figures designed in the surface. Another is that the
surface of this area has a layer with a high plaster content, which mixed with the
morning frost keeps the earth and the stones attached to the ground, preventing
them to be removed by the strong wind we have in this area. Also the strong
winds that we have in the area known as paracas, are those that help to clean
the lines and figures removing the little dust and sand accumulated over the
On the entire surface of the Nasca desert there are lines and trapezoids that
some hills or hills which were considered as divinities or sacred Apus (gods) for
the Nasca civilization. We can find different lines and at the same time
Converging lines are when two or more than two lines start from different points
and al of them join at the same point. The divergent lines are those lines that
start from the same point or place, and from there they expand, projecting
We have lines that are related to the solstices. Paul Kosok saw in these lines
a place from which many lines started watching the sunset on June 21, the day
of the winter solstice, finding that one of the lines coincided almost exactly from
its observation point with the place on the horizon where the sunset is. In
conclusion, they noted that these lines served to mark this dates and therefore
the other lines would have served to mark the movement of other stars. Another
fact fallowing this hypothesis is that the first stretch of each of the largest zig-
zag lines point to the place where we see the sunset on the day of the solstice.
Tracing the path of the stars not only has practical purposes, as in agriculture,
there could have also been a belief in the influence of these stars in the
The natural observatory was very important for the Nasca civilization because
from the top of the hill they could see the movement of the stars every year
which are related with the seasons of the year and they could identified the
good seasons of the year in which they could get good harvest talking about the
