Mr Hiriam B. Otis was a Protestant pastor. He was from
America. He bought a big house in England. Its name was
Canterville Chase 1•
'There is a ghost in this house,' people said. 'Canterville
House is nota good place.'
It was Lord Canterville's house. He was a very
honourable man.
'The house has a ghost,' he said to Mr Otis. 'Now we
don't live in it. One day my great-aunt2 had a nervous
attack. She was in her bedroom and two skeleton hands
touched her. The servants didn't stay with us after this
incident. Lady Canterville also slept very badly. There
were mysterious noises in the corridor and the library. The
Reverend Augustus Dampier has seen it too.'
'A ghost is a very valuable thing,' said Mr Otis.
'America is a very rich country. We have everything that is
valuable. We have English actresses and actors but we
don't have your ghosts because ghosts don't exist. lf
ghosts existed, we would have them in our museums.'
'The ghost exists,' said Lord Canterville, smiling. 'lt
has existed for three centuries, since 1584. It always
appears before the death of a member of the family.'

Míster Hiriam B. Otis era un pastor protestante. Proce-
día de Estados Unidos. Compró una gran casa en Inglate-
rra. Se llamaba Canterville Chase.
- Hay un fantasma en la casa -decía la gente-, Canter-
ville Chase no es un buen lugar.
Se trataba de la mansión de lord Canterville, un hombre
muy honrado.
- En esa casa hay un fantasma - le dijo a míster Otis-.
Actualmente no vivimos alli. Un día mi tía abuela tuvo una
crisis nerviosa. Estaba en su habitación y la tocaron las dos
manos de un esqueleto. Después de aquel incidente, los
criados no se quisieron quedar con nosotros. Además, lady
Canterville dormía muy mal. Se escuchaban ruidos extra-
ños en el corredor y en la biblioteca. El reverendo Augus-
tus Dampier también lo ha visto.
- ¡Un fantasma es algo muy valioso! -exclamó míster
Otis-. Estados Unidos es un país muy rico. Tenemos todo
lo que se considera valioso. Tenemos actrices y actores
ingleses, pero no tenemos a sus fantasmas porque los fan-
tasmas no existen. Si existieran. los tendríamos en nues-
tros museos.
-El fantasma existe -dijo sonriendo lord Canterville-.
Y ha existido durante tres siglos, desde 1584. Siempre
aparece antes de la muerte de algún miembro de la familia.

'On these sad occasions,' replied Mr Otis, 'the family
doctor usually appears3 . Ghosts don't exist. The laws of
nature aren't different for the British aristocracy.'
'lf a ghost in the house is not a problem for you, that's
ali right, but remember 1 warned you.'
The Pastor's Family
Two weeks later, Mr Otis bought the house. Then his
family carne to live there. Mrs Otis was an attractive
woman. She had blue eyes and a lovely face. Sorne
American women think it is important to look ill in
Europe. They think it is more refined. This was not the
case with Mrs Otis. She had a wonderful constitution and a
lot of spirit. She was similar to the English. The English
have a lot in common with the Arnericans, except the
language, of course.
Her eldest son had the patriotic name of Washington but
he did not like this name. He was a fair, good-looking
young man. He was a diplomat and he danced very well.
He was very famous at the Newport casino in America and
he was also very popular in London. Washington liked
lords and gardenias4 . Apart from this, he was very normal.
His sister, Virginia, was fifteen years old. She was
pretty and had big blue eyes. She was a very good
horsewoman. She won a pony race against Lord Bilton.
This race went round the park twice. This impressed the

-En estas tristes ocasiones -replicó míster Otis-, quien
normalmente aparece es el médico de la familia. Los fan-
tasmas no existen; las leyes de la naturaleza no son distin-
tas para la aristocracia británica.
-Si tener un fantasma en casa no representa ningún pro-
blema para usted, a mí me parece bien, pero recuerde que
se lo advertí.
La familia del pastor
Dos semanas más tarde, míster Otis compró la casa y se
trasladó a vivir allí con su familia. La señora Otis era una
mujer atractiva. Tenía los ojos azules y una cara muy her-
mosa. Al~nas mujeres norteamericanas creen que en
Europa es importante tener aspecto de enfermas. Piensan
que es más distinguido. Este no era el caso de la señora
Otis, que tenía una constitución magnífica y un gran tem-
ple. Se parecía a las inglesas. Los ingleses tienen mucho
en común con los norteamericanos, a excepción claro
está, del idioma. '
Su hijo mayor tenía el patriótico nombre de Washing-
t~n, pero a él ~~ le ~ustaba._ Era un joven rubio y bien pare-
cido d~ profes1on d1plomáttco. Bailaba muy bien. Era muy
con~1do en el casino de Newport, en Estados Unidos, y
también gozaba de popularidad en Londres. A Washington
le gustaban los lores y las gardenias. Aparte de eso, era una
persona muy normal.
Su hermana Virginia tenía quince años. Era hermosa y
tenía los ojos azules y muy grandes. Además era una gran
amazona; había ganado a lord Bilton una carrera de ponis
que consistió en dar dos vueltas al parque. Aquello había

young Lord Cheshire very much. He wanted to marry her
immediately but bis guardians did not · like this. They
ordered him to retum to Eton5 School the same day. Lord
Cheshire was very sad and cried.
After Virginia there were two twins. Tbey were very
nice boys. They were similar to their father in character.
The Family Arrive at the House
Canterville Chase is seven miles from Ascot6, which is
the nearest station to the house. Mr Otis telegraphed for a
carriage to meet his family at the station. Tbe journey to
the house was very pleasant. It was a lovely June evening.
The air smelt of pinewoods. Sometimes they heard a
pigeon or saw a pheasant. Little squirrels looked at them
and when they passed rabbits ran away7 • But when they
entered the avenue of Canterville Chase, the sky became
cloudy. There was a strange atmosphere in the air. It
started to rain.
The Bloodstain
An old woman was standing on the steps of the house.
This was Mrs. Umney, the housekeeper. Lady Canterville
wanted her to continue in her job and Mrs Otis agreed.
'Welcome to Canterville Chase,' she said.

impresionado mucho al joven lord Cheshire, quien quiso
casarse de inmediato con ella, pero a sus tutores no les
gustó la idea y le hicieron regresar a Eton aquel mismo día.
Lord Cheshire se puso muy triste y lloró.
Después de Virginia venían dos gemelos. Eran unos
chicos encantadores y de un carácter parecido al de su
padre.
La familia llega a la casa
Canterville Chase está a siete millas de Ascot, la esta-
ción más próxima a la casa. Míster Otis telegrafió para
pedir un coche y poder encontrarse con su familia en la
estación. El viaje hasta la casa fue muy agradable. Era
una encantadora tarde de junio y se sentía en el aire el
olor de los pinos. De vez en cuando, se podía oír alguna
paloma o ver algún faisán. Las pequeñas ardillas los
miraban y los conejos huían a su paso. Pero cuando
entraron en la avenida que conduce a Canterville Chase,
el cielo se nubló. Se notaba un ambiente extraño en el
aire. Empezó a llover.
La mancha de sangre
Había uná mujer mayor de pie en los escalones de la
casa. Era la señora Umney, el ama de llaves. Lady Canter-
ville quiso que ella continuara desempeñando su trabajo
en la casa y la señora Otis estuvo de acuerdo.
- Bienvenidos a Canterville Chase -dijo.

They passed through the hall and went into the library. It
was a long room with a large stained-glass window. There
was tea on the table. Mrs Urnney served them the tea. They
observed the room.
Suddenly Mrs Otis saw a red stain on the floor next to
the fireplace. She did not know its significance8.
'There's a stain on the carpet,' she said to Mrs Umney.
'Yes, madam,' replied the old housekeeper, 'it is a bloodstain.'
'How horrible!' cried Mrs Otis. 'I don't like bloodstains
in a sitting-room. lt must be cleaned immediately.'
The old woman smiled and answered in a mysterious
voice, 'It is the blood of Lady Eleanor de Canterville\Her
husband, Sir Simon de Canterville, murdered her here ín
1575. He disappeared nine years later under very stran~e
circumstances. His body was never discovered. His spirit
is still in the house. Tourists and other people often admire
the stain. It can 't be cleaned.'
'Nonsense!' said Washington Otis. 'Pinkerton's Charnpion
Stain Remover and Paragon Detergent10 will clean it'
Immediately he started to clean the stain with sorne
black liquid. In a few moments the stain disappeared.
'You see!' he exclaimed.
Suddenly there was a flash of lightning and then
thunder. Everyone jumped and Mrs Umney fainted. 'What
a horrible climate!' said Mr Otis and started to smoke a
long cigar. 'There are a lot of people in this country and I

suppose there isn't enough good weather for everybody ,'
be joked. 'Emigration is the only solution for England.'

Pasaron por el vest:Jbulo y se dirigieron a la biblioteca Era
una habitación larga con una gran vidriera. El té estaba sobre la
mesa y la señora Umney lo sirvió. Observaron la habitación.
De repente, la señora Otis vio una mancha roja en el
suelo, cerca de la chimenea. No sabía qué significaba.
-Hay una mancha en la alfombra -dijo dirigiéndose a la
señora Umney.
-Sí, señora -replicó la anciana ama de llaves-, es una
mancha de sangre.
-¡Es horrible! -gritó la señora Otis-. No me gustan las
manchas de sangre en el salón. Hay que limpiarla inmedia-
tamente.
La anciana sonrió y contestó con tono misterioso:
-Es la sangre de lady Eleanor de Canterville. Su mari-
do, sir Simon de Canterville, la asesinó aquí en 1575 y
desapareció nueve años más tarde bajo extrañas circuns-
tancias. Su cuerpo nunca apareció y su espíritu aún ronda
por Ja casa. Con frecuencia vienen turistas y otras personas
a admirar la mancha. No se puede limpiar.
-¡Tonterías! -dijo Washington Otis-. Con el "Campeón
de los quitamanchas y detergente sin igual" de la casa Pin-
kerton se podrá limpiar.
Y comenzó de inmediato a limpiar la mancha con un
líquido negro. En unos instantes, la mancha había desapa-
recido.
-¿Lo ves? -exclamó.
De repente, se vio un destello de luz acompañado por
un trueno. Todos saltaron y la señora Umney se desmayó.
-¡Qué clima tan horrible! -dijo míster Otis encendien-
do un largo puro-. En este país hay mucha gente, y supon-
go que el buen tiempo no alcanza para todos -bromeó-. La
emigración es la única solución para Inglaterra.

'My dear Hiriam; exclaimed Mrs Otis, 'what can we do
with a woman who faints?'
'We can charge her,' answered the pastor 12 • 'She won't
faint after that.' Sure enough. in a few minutes Mrs Umney
recovered consciousness. However, she was very agitated.
'Please don't bring problems to Canterville Chase. 1
have seen sorne terrible things in this house; she said.
'Many nights 1 haven't slept.'
'We aren' t afraid of ghosts; said Mr Otis.
But under the circumstances he decided to incrcase her
salary. After that, Mrs Umney went to her bedroom.
II
The Stain Retums
There was a terrible storrn that night but nothing special
happened. The next morning, however, they carne down to
breakfast and found the terrible stain of blood on the floor
again.
'My Paragon Detergent is always effective,' said
Washington. 'lt must be the ghost.'
He used it again but on the second moming it appeared
agait1. On the third morning it was also there. Ali the
family were intrigued. Now they believed in ghosts.

-Querido Hiriam -exclamó la señora Otis-, ¿qué pode-
mos hacer con una mujer que se desmaya?
-Podemos cobrarle -respondió el pastor-. Así no se
volverá a desmayar. En efecto, la señora Umney volvió
en sí pasados unos minutos. Sin embargo, estaba muy
agitada.
-Por favor, no traigan problemas a Canterville Chase,
He visto cosas tembles en esta casa -dijo-, muchas
noches no he podido dormir.
-Nosotros no tememos a los fantasmas -dijo míster
Otis.
Pero, en aquellas circunstancias, decidió aumentarle el
sueldo. Después, la señora Umney se retiró a su habitación.

La mancha aparece de nuevo
Aquella noche hubo una tormenta terrible, pero no
sucedió nada extraordinario. Sin embargo, a la mañana
siguiente, bajaron a desayunar y se encontraron con que
la horrible mancha de sangre había aparecido de nuevo
en el suelo.
-Mi "detergente sin igual" siempre resulta muy efecti-
vo -dijo Washington-. Tuvo que ser el fantasma.
Limpió otra vez la mancha, pero ésta apareció de nuevo
a la mañana del segundo día. A la tercera mañana también
estaba allí. Toda la familia estaba intrigada. Para entonces
ya creían en los fantasmas.

The Ghost Appears
The day was warm and sunny. In the evening the family
went for a drive. They did not return home until nine
o'clock and had a light supper13. They talked about
everythlng except ghosts. At eleven o'clock the family
wentto bed.
A short time after, Mr Otis woke up. He heard a strange
noise in the corridor, outside bis bedroom. It was the sound of
!Iletal. It was coming nearer every moment. He got up, lit14 a
match and looked at the time. It was exactly one o' clock.
He was quite calm and felt his pulse. lt was normal. The
strange noise still continued. Then he heard the sound of
footsteps. He put on his slippers, took a small bott1e from a
bag and opened the door. In front of him, in the moon1i.ght,
was an old man. He had a terrible appearance. His eyes
were red and bis long hair was grey. His clothes were dirty.
He had chains on bis hands and feet.
'My dear sir,' said Mr Otis, 'you really must oil those
chains. Please use my bottle of Tammany Rising Sun
Lubricator. It is very effective. I'll leave it here for you next
to the bedroom candles. I'll give you more ifyou need it.'
With these words, the pastor put the bottle on a marble
table. Then he closed the door and went back to bed.
For a moment the Canterville ghost did not move. He
was indignant. Then he broke the bottle on the floor. He ran
down the corridor groaning, emitting a horrible green light.
However, when he arrived at the top of the stairs a door
opened and two figures appeared. They were dressed in

Aparece el fantasma
Aquel era un día cálido y soleado. Por la tarde, la fami-
lia salió a dar un paseo en coche y no volvió hasta las
nueve. Tomaron una cena ligera y hablaron de todo menos
de fantasmas. A las once se fueron a la cama.
Un poco más tarde, míster Otis se despertó. Había oído
un extraño ruido en· el corredor, fuera de la habitación. Era
un sonido como de metal que se acercaba cada vez más. Se
levantó, encendió un fósforo y miró la hora. Era la una en
punto.
Estaba tranquilo y se tomó el pulso. Era normal. Aún se
oía el extraño ruido. Entonces oyó un ruido de pasos. Se
puso las zapatillas, sacó un pequeño frasco de una bolsa y
abrió la puerta. Frente a él, iluminado por la luz de la luna,
había un viejo. Tenía un aspecto sobrecogedor. Sus ojos
eran rojos y tenia el cabello largo y de color gris. Sus ropas
estaban sucias y llevaba cadenas en las manos y en los
pies.
-Distinguido señor -<lijo míster Otis -, tendría usted
que engrasar esas cadenas. Por favor, tome mi frasco de
lubricante Tammany Sol Naciente. Es muy eficaz. Se lo
dejaré aquí al lado de las velas de la habitación. Le daré
más si lo necesita.
Diciendo estas palabras, e] pastor colocó el frasco en
una mesa de mármol, cerró la puerta y volvió a la cama.
El fantasma de Canterville se quedó inmóvil durante
unos instantes. Estaba indignado. Rompió la botella contra
el suelo y huyó por el corredor, gruñendo y despidiendo
una horrible luz verde.
Sin embargo, cuando llegó a lo alto de la escalera, se
abrió una puerta y aparecieron dos figuras vestidas de

white 15• One of them threw a pillow at him. He had to
escape quickly. He adopted the Fourth Dimensiorr of
Space and disappeared through the wall.
In a small secret chamber in the left wing of the house he
recovered his breath. He started to consider his position. In
all his three hundred years, he had never been so insulted.
The Canterville Ghost's Greatest Moments
He remembered bis greatest moments. Once he
frightened the Duchess when she was standing in front of
the mirror. Then he thought of the four housemaids. He
had smiled at them 16 through the curtains of one of the
bedrooms and they became hysterical.
Then there was the case of the rector of the parish. One
night the rector was coming from the library. The ghost blew
out his candle and now he has problems with his nerves.
There was also the case of old Madame de Tremouillac.
She woke up one morning and saw a skeleton. It was sitting
in her armchair next to the fue, reading her diary. She stayed
in bed for six weeks after this with a fever. When she was
well again, she decided to reconcile herself with the Church
so she discontinued her relationship with the famous
Monsieur de Voltaire. He was a religious sceptic.
Then he remembered a terrible night. Lord Canterville
was found with a playing card in his throat. He had
cheated with this card and had won fifty thousand pounds

blanco. Una de ellas le lanzó una almohada y él tuvo que
huir rápidamente. Utilizando la cuarta dimensión del espa-

Recobró el aliento en una pequeña cámara secreta, en el
ala izquierda de la casa. Empezó a considerar su situación.
En sus trescientos años, nunca le habían insultado de aque-
lla manera.
Los mejores momentos del fantasma de Canterville
Recordó sus mejores momentos. Una vez había asusta-
do a la duquesa mientras ella se encontraba frente al espe-
jo. Después pensó en las cuatro doncellas. Él les había
sonreído a través de las cortinas de una de las habitaciones
y se pusieron histéricas.
Después estaba el caso del rector de la parroquia. Una
noche, cuando el rector volvía de la biblioteca, el fantasma
apagó de un soplo su vela y ahora tiene problemas de ner-
vios.
También estaba el caso de la vieja señora de Tre-
mouillac. Se levantó una mañana y vio un esqueleto. Esta-
ba sentado en su sillón, al lado del fuego, leyendo su dia-
rio. Después de aquel suceso la señora tuvo que permane-
cer en cama durante seis semanas, víctima de la fiebre.
Cuando se recuperó, decidió reconciliarse con la Iglesia,
de modo que rompió sus relaciones con el famoso mon-
sieur de Voltaire, un hombre escéptico en cuanto a los
temas religiosos.
Después recordó una noche terrible. Lord Canterville
fue hallado con un naipe en la garganta. Había hecho tram-
pa con aquella carta y así había ganado cincuenta mil

from Charles James Fox. Before he died he said the ghost
had made him swallow it.
Ali his great triumphs retumed to him. He thought of
the butler who saw a green hand at the kitchen window and
shot bimself. Then there was Lady Stutfield. She always
wore a black band around her neck. This covered the mark
of five fingers bumt on her skin. In the end she drowned
herself in the pond. Then there was the famous occasion
when he played skittles with bis bones on the lawn.
Now, after all this, sorne stupid Am~ricans have come
here. They have offered bim the Rising Sun Lubricator
and have thrown pillows at bim. Besides, no ghost in
bistory has ever been treated in this manner. He wanted
vengeance.

The Stain Changes Colour
The next morning, at breakfast, the Otis family talked
about the ghost. Mr Otis was naturally annoyed that the
ghost did not accept bis present.
'I don't want to hurt the ghost,' be said. 'It isn't polite to
throw pillows at bim.'
This was true but the twins started to laugh.
'On the other band,' he continued, 'if he decides not to
use the lubricator, we will have to take bis chains from
bim. It is impossible to sleep with all that noise outside the
bedrooms.'

estanque. También recordó aquella famosa ocasión en que

Después de todo aquello, habían llegado unos nortea-
mericanos estúpidos para ofrecerle lubricante Sol Naciente
y tirarle almohadas. Además, ningún fantasma había sido
tratado de aquella manera. Deseaba vengarse.
La mancha cambia de color
A la mañana siguiente, a la hora del desayuno, la fami-
lia Otis habló del fantasma. Míster Otis estaba, como era
natural, molesto porque el fantasma no había aceptado su
regalo.
-No quisiera ofender al fantasma -<lijo-, no es de
buena educación tirarle almohadas.
Aquello era justo, pero los gemelos se echaron a reír.
-Por otro lado -continuó-, si decide no usar el lubrican-
te, tendremos que quitarle las cadenas. Es imposible dormir
con todo ese ruido a la puerta de las habitaciones.

For the rest of the week they were not disturbed. The
only thing that happened was that the bloodstain continued
to retum to the library floor. This was certainly very strange
because Mrs Otis always locked 17 the door at night. The
stain also started to change colour. Sorne mornings it was
red and on other mornings it was purple. One day, when
they carne down for family prayers, it was emerald-green.
These changes amused the family very much. Every
evening they made bets on the colour for thé next day. The
only person who did not participate in the joke was little
Virginia. She was always sad when she saw the bloodstain.
She nearly cried18 when she saw the emerald-green one.
The Ghost Retun1s
The second appearance of the ghost was on Sunday
night. A short time after going to bed they heard a terrible
crash in the hall. They ran downstairs. A suit of armour
was on the floor and the Canterville ghost was sitting on a
chair. He was rubbing his knees with an expression of
agony on his face. The American pastor took out a revolver
and said 'Hands up!'
The ghost became very angry. He passed through them
like mist, blowing out19 Washinton Otis's candle. At the
top of the stairs he recovered himself. He decided to give
an example of his demoniacal laughter.
This had served him well on more than one occasion.
People say it turned Lord Raker's wig grey in one night

laughter. So he laughed his most horrible laugh and the
roof produced a terrible echo.
When the noise stopped Mrs Otis appeared in a blue"
dressing-gown.
'I am afraid you are not very well,' she said. 'Would you
like a bottle of Doctor Dobell's medicine? If you have
indigestion, it is an excellent remedy.'
The ghost looked at her angrily. He began to make
preparations to tum himself into a large black dog. This
was one of his more notorious feats. The family doctor
said that this had produced the madness of Lord
Canterville's uncle, the Honourable20 Thomas Horton.
However, the sound of footsteps made him change his
mind and he decided to become phosphorescent instead.
He vanished just as the twins carne towards him.
When he reached his room he became very agitated.
The twins' vulgarity and Mrs Otis's materialism were
very annoying. But what he was most angry about was
that he could not wear the suit of armour. He hoped tbat
even modero Americans would be frightened by a
ghost in armour. It was his own suit and he had worn it
at the Kenilworth toumament21 • Queen Elizabeth 1 had
complimented him on it.
But when he pul it on, he had fallen on the stone floor
because it was very heavy and he had hurt his knees and
hands.

Tbe Ghost lnvents a Plan
For sorne days after this he was quite ill and <lid not
leave his room except to look after the stain. However, he
recovered and decided to try to frighten the American
pastor and his family for the third time. He selected Friday,
the seventeenth of August, for his appearance. He spent
most of that day choosing what clothes to wear.
In the evening it started to rain very beavily and it was so
windy that the doors and windows made a terrible noise. In
fact, it was the weather he loved. His plan of action was to
go to Washington Otis's room first. There he would scream
at him from the foot of bis bed, and stab himself three times.
He particularly <lid not like Washington because he was the
one who always cleaned the famous Canterville bloodstain
with bis Pinkerton's Paragon Detergent.
After terrifying22 the young man, he planned to go to
the room occupied by the American pastor and bis wife.
Then he would puta cold hand on Mrs Otis's forehead and
whisper terrible things in her husband's ear.
He had not decided what to do in the case of Virginia.
She had never insulted him and was pretty and kind. A few
groans from the wardrobe would be more than sufficient.
But the twins were different; he wanted to teach them a
lesson. First, he wanted to sit on their chests. Then he
would stand between their beds in the form of a green
corpse until they became paralysed with fear. Then he
would walk around tbe room in the character of the
'Suicide's Skeleton'. This had been very effective on more
than one occasion.

The Ghost Has a Rival
At half past ten he heard the family going to becl. For sorne
reason the twins were laugbing and making a lot of noise
before going23 to becl. Bt,It at a quarter past eleven everything
was quiet and at midnight he decided to leave his room.
It was raining hard but he could hear Mr Otis snoring.
The ghost had an evil smile on his cruel mouth. When he
passed one of the great windows, the moon disappeared
behind a cloud. He moved like an evil shadow and even the
darkness seemed to hate him.
Once he thought he heard someone call, and stopped. But
it was only a dog from a farm so he went on24. He was holding
a dagger. Finally he reached the comer of the passage which
connected with Washington's room. He paused there for a
moment. The wind was blowing in his háir. He heard the
clock. It was a quarter past eleven. The time had come.
He laughed to hirnself and turned the comer. Suddenly
in front of him he saw a terrible ghost. Its head was bald
and its white face was round and fat. It had a sinister smile
and its eyes emitted rays of red light. Its mouth was full of
tire and it was wearing a white gannent like his. On its
chest there was a sign with strange writing in old letters. It
was probably a list of its crimes.
He was terribly frightened because he had never seen a
ghost before. He looked again at the phantom and then ran
back25 to his room. He was running so fast that he fell over and
dropped his dagger, which the butler found the next moming.
Once back in his room he got into bed and hid under the sheets.

After a time, however, the brave Canterville spirit
returned to him and he decided to speak to the new ghost the
next moming. So when the sun started to appear he returned
to the same place where he had seen it. He thought that two
ghosts were better than one and it could help him frighten
the twins. But when he arrived, he saw a terrible thing.
Something had happened to the ghost. The light had
disappeared from its eyes and it was standing in a very
uncomfortable manner against the wall. He took it in his
arms but, to his horror, its head fell on the floor. The body
had changed and he saw he was holding a curtain. On the
floor there was a sweeping-brush and a pumpkin. He did
not understand this curious transformation so he looked at
the sign and, in the grey morning light, read these words:

Now he understood. He had been tricked. The old
Canterville look carne to his eyes. He raised his arms
above his head and swore26 that when the cock had
crowed27 twice, terrible acts of blood would take place.
Suddenly he heard the cock and he laughed a long
laugh. Then he waited. He waited for hours, but for sorne
strange reason, the cock did not crow again. Finally at half
past seven he stopped waiting because the housemaids
were arriving. He went back to his room. He was very
confused. He consulted several books. They said that every

He then retired to his coffin, and stayed there until evening.
IV
Tbe Terrible 'I\vins
The next day the ghost was very weak. and tired. The
terrible excitement of the last four weeks was beginning to
have its effect. His nerves were in a terrible state. For five
days he stayed in his room and decided not to look after
the stain any more. lf the Otis family did not want it, they
did not deserve it. They were evidently inferior and could
not appreciate the symbolic value of these phenomena.
Apparitions and astral bodies, of course, were a different

His only obligation was to appear in the corridor once a
week and to scream28 from the great window on the first and
third Wednesdays of every month. He could not honourably

usual between midnight and seven o'clock. But he was
careful not to be heard or seen. He took off29 his boots and

Los terribles gemelos

sado. Las terribles emociones de las cuatro últimas sema-

los nervios. No salió de su habitación en cinco días y tomó
la determinación de no ocuparse más de la mancha. Si la
familia Otis no la quería, entonces no la merecía. Era evi-
bólico de aquellos fenómenos. Las apariciones y los cuer-
pos astrales eran, desde luego, otra cosa, y estaban fuera de
su control.
Su única obligación era aparecerse en el corredor una

Rising Sun Lubricator.
This was very difficult for him to do. However, one
night when the family were having dinner, he went into Mr
Otis's bedroom and took the bottle. At first he felt a little
humiliated but later he thought it was quite a good
invention. It also served its purpose.
In spite of all this, he still had problems with the twins.
They put strings across the corridor. The ghost did not see
them in the dark and fell over many times. One day they put
butter on the stairs and he hada terrible fall. He was very angry
after this. This was too much for him. He decided to make one
final effort to maintain his dignity and social position.
He decided to visit these insolent schoolboys in his
character of 'Crazy Rupert.' This was a lord without a
head. Seventy years ago he had frightened pretty Lady
Barbara Modish with this character. After this she decided
not to marry the grandfather of the present Lord
Canterville. She ran away with Jack Castletown. She did
not want to be part of a family that tolerated a ghost in their
house. Later Lord Canterville killed Jack Castletown in a
duel on Wandsworth Common30• A year later Lady
Barbara died of a broken heart. For the Canterville ghost
the episode had been a great success.
However, it was a very difficult character to create. lt
took him three hours to make his preparations.
At last everything was ready. He was very pJ~a~~d with
the result. His leather boots were a little too big and he
could only find one pistol. But he was satisfied.

Setenta años antes este personaje la había servido para
horrorizar a la bella lady Barbara Modish, quien tras aquel
incidente optó por no casarse con el abuelo del actual lord
Canterville y se fugó con Jack Castletown. No quería for-
mar parte de una familia que tolerase a un fantasma en su
casa. Pasado un tiempo, lord Canterville mató a Jack Cas-
tletown en un duelo en Wandsworth Common, y un año

At a quarter past one he carne out of his room and
walked down the corridors. He arrived at the twins'
bedroom. This bedroom had a special name, the Blue Bed
Chamber because the curtains were blue. The door was
open just a little. He opened the door very quickly to malee
a dramatic entrance. Suddenly a heavy jug of water fell on
him. He was covered in water. The twins were in bed
laughing at him.
This was a great shock to his nervous system. He ran
back to his room as fast as he could. The next day he
stayed in bed. He had a terrible cold. Fortunately, he had
not taken his head to the twins' bedroom. lf he had, you
can imagine the consequences. This was a small
consolation for the Canterville ghost.
Now the ghost did not think it was possible to frighten
the Otis family. He limited himself to walking along the
corridor in his slippers. He had a scarf around his neck to
protect himself from the cold. He also carried a fuearm in
case the twins attacked him.
He received his final humiliation on the nineteenth of
September when he went down to the hall. There he started
to malee comments about the photographs of the American
pastor and bis wife. These bad replaced the pictures of
the Canterville family. He was wearing a long shroud
and was carrying a small lantem. He was dressed for the
character of 'Thomas the Graveless'. This was one of
his most famous impersonations. It was also the origin
of a big argument between the Cantervilles and a
neighbour.
It was a quarter past two in the morning and the ghost
thought that everybody was in bed. He went to look at the
remains of the bloodstain. Suddenly two figures jumped

they screamed 'Boo31 ' in his ear.
The ghost was in a panic. He ran to the staircase but
Washington Otis was waiting for him. He had a big
watering can in his hand. The ghost had enemies on every
side. He disappeared into the stove. Fortunately it was not
lit. He returned to his room via the chimney32. When he
arrived he was very dirty. He was also very desperate.
After this he did not go out at night. The twins waited
for him on severa! occasions. They put nutshells in the
corridor. This made their parents and the servants very
angry. But the ghost did not appear.
So the family continued with their life. Mr Otis worked
on the history of the Democratic Party. Mrs Otis gave a
wonderful dinner party. This was good for her reputation.
The boys started to play national games like poker.
Virginia rode her pony accompanied by the young Duke of
Cheshire. He was spending the last week of his holidays at
Canterville Chase.
People thought the ghost had disappeared. However,
the ghost was still in the house. Now he was almost an
invalid but he wanted to continue with his work. He
discovered that the young Duke of Cheshire was still a
guest in the house. This was important for him. The Duke
of Cheshire's granduncle, Lord Francis Stilton, once made
a bet with Colonel Carbury for a hundred pounds.
'I will play dice with the Canterville ghost,' said the
Colonel.

The next moming he was found in the card-room in a
paralytic state. The only words he said were 'Double
sixes!'
A lot of people knew this story but the families tried to
keep it a secret. This story appears in the third volume of
Lord Tattle's 'Recollections of the Prince Regent and his
Friends'. The ghost wanted to show he still had influence
over the Stilton family. In fact there was a family
connection. The ghost's cousin had been married to
Sieur33 de Bulkeley and the Duk:e of Cheshire was a direct
descendant of this lineage.
He decided to appear to the Duke, Vrrginia's suitor, in his
impersonation of the 'Vampire Monk'. The last time he had
appeared in this role was on New Year's Eve in 1764. Lady
Startup saw it. She had an apoplexy and died in three days.
Before she died she disinherited ali the Cantervilles. She
gave all her money to charity.
However, the ghost was still afraid of the twins. At the
last moment he decided not to leave his room. The Duke of
Cheshire slept in peace and dreamed of Vrrginia.
The Ghost Meets Virginia
A few days after this, Vrrginia and the Duke went horse
riding. Virginia's clothes got dirty. When they returned to

She did not want anyone to see her dirty clothes.
On passing the Tapestry Chamber, she saw somebody
inside. Virginia thought it was the maid because
sometimes she worked in that room. She was surprised. It
was not the maid; it was the Canterville ghost. He was
sitting next to the window. He was looking at the leaves
dancing in the air.
He looked very depressed. He was very sad. At first,
Vrrginia wanted to go to her room and lock the door. But
then she wanted to console him. He did not know she was
in the room. She was very quiet34.
'I am sorry fot you,' she said, 'but my brothers are retuming
to school tomorrow. If you are good, nobody will bother you'.
'That's absurd. 1 can't be good,' he answered. He
looked at the pretty girl. 'Completely absurd. I must walk
the corridor at night. 1 must make terrible noises. lt is my
only reason for existing'.
'It's nota good reason. You have been very bad. Mrs.
Umney told us the first day ":"e arrived here that you killed
yourwife.'
'Well, 1 admit it,' said the ghost. ' But it was a family
problem. It did not concem other people.'
'lt is wrong to kili anyone,' said Vrrginia. Sometimes
she hada sweet Puritan morality.
'I bate abstract ethics. My wife wasn' t pretty. She didn 't
look after my clothes. She couldn't cook. And don' t forget
her brothers killed me. They didn't give me any food. 1
know 1 killed her but what they did wasn't very nice.'

'Stop! ' shouted Virginia. 'You are rude, horrible and
vulgar. You are dishonest, too. You took the paints from
my paint-box. First you took my reds so 1 couldn't paint
sunsets. Then you took my emerald-green and my yellow
so I only had white and blue. 1 could only paint
moonlight scenes. They are depressing and difficult to
paint. I never said anything to my family but they were
very angry. It was ridiculous. Emerald-green blood is
impossible.'
'Well,' said the ghost. What could 1 do? lt is difficult to
find real blood. Your brother started the provocation with
his Paragon Detergent, so 1 took your paints. Colours are
personal. The Cantervilles have blue blood, the bluest i_n
England. I know Americans don't like things of th1s
kind.'
'You know nothing. The best thing you can do is
emigrate. It will be a good experience. My father will pay
your voyage. In New York you could be a great success. A
lot of people would give a hundred thousand dollars to have
a grandfather, and much more to have a farnily ghost.'
'I don't think I would like America.'
'I suppose because we have no ruins and no curiosities,'
said Virginia.
'No ruins! No curiosities!' answered the ghost. 'You
have your navy and your manners.'
'Good night. I think the twins need another week's
holiday. 1will ask papa.'

Virginia's big blue eyes opened. She was very
surprised.
'I haven't slept for three hundred years,' he repeated.
'I'm very tired.'
Virginia was very serious. She went to him. She looked
at his old face.
'Poor, poor ghost,' she said. 'You have no place where
you can sleep.'
'There is a little garden with long grass far from here.
There are big white stars. There is a crystal moon. There is
a big old tree that protects you.'
Virginia cried. She put her face in her hands.
'The Garden of Death,' she said.
'Yes, Death. Death must be so beautiful. To be in the
earth with the grass above your head, and listen to silence.
To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to
forgive life, to be at peace. You can help me. You can open
the doors of Death's house. Love is always with you. Love
is stronger than Death.'
Virginia trembled. For a few moments there was
silence. It was like a dream. Then the ghost spoke again.
His voice was like the sound of the wind.

And a little girl gives away its tears,
Then shall all the house be still
And peace come to Canterville.

'They mean,' he said sadly, ' that you must cry with me for
my sins because 1 have no tears. You must pray with me for
my soul because I have no faith. If you have always been
sweet and good, the Angel of Death will come to me. You will
see terrible things in the darkness. Evil spirits will tell you
terrible things. But they can't affect the purity of a little child.'
Virginia did not answer. The ghost was desperate. He
looked at her.
Suddenly she stood up. She was pale and there was a
strange light in her eyes. 'I' m not afraid,' she said firmly,
'and I will ask the Angel to bring you peace.'
He got up from his chair. He gave a cry of joy. He took
her hand and kissed it. His fingers were as cold as ice. His
lips bumed like fire, but Virginia was not afraid. They
crossed the room together.

On the tapestry there were little huntsmen. They waved
their hancls.
'Go back! Little Vrrginía,' they cried, 'Go back!'
But the ghost took her hand more firmly. Virginia
closed her eyes. She did not want to see the huntsmen.
Horrible figures on the chimney said, 'Beware37 ! Little
Vrrginia, beware! Maybe we will never see you again.'
The ghost moved more quickly and Virginia did not listen.
When they reached the end of the room he stopped. He
said sorne words she could not understand. She opened her
eyes. She saw the wall disappearing like rnist. There was a
great black cavem in front of her. There was a cold wind.
Something touched her dress.
'Quick, quick,' cried the ghost, 'or it will be too late.'
In a moment the wall closed behind them and the
Tapestry Chamber was empty.
VI
Virginia Disappears
About ten minutes later the bell rang for tea. Virginia
did not come down so one of the servants went to tell her.
A short time later he retumed. He could not find her
anywhere.

Virginia often went to the garden in the evening to get
flowers so Mrs Otis was not alarmed. But at six o'clock
when Virginia did not appear she became very anxious.
The boys went out to look for her. Mr and Mrs Otis looked
in every room in the house.
At half past six the twins carne back. They could oot find
Vrrginia. They were all worried. They did not know what to
do. Suddenly Mr Otis remembered something. There were
sorne gypsies in the park. He had given them pennission to
camp a few days before. He went to see them'. His eldest38
son and two servants went with him. The Duke of Cheshire
was very worried. He wanted to go, too. Mr Otis said 'no'.
He did not want a confrontation with the gypsies.
When they arrived, the gypsies were not there. They
had left suddenly. The fire was still burning. There were
sorne plates on the grass, too. Washington and the two
servants searched the area.
. Mr Otis ran home. He sent telegrams to all the police
inspectors in the country. 'Gypsies have taken my little
girl. Please look for her,' he wrote.
Then he asked for his horse. He told his wife and the
three boys to have dinner. Then he started to ride along the
Ascot Road. Suddenly he heard someone galloping behind
him. He looked round and saw the Duke on bis pony. He
was very red and he wasn't wearing a hat.
'I'm very sorry Mr Otis,' said the boy. '1 can't eat dinner
while Virginia is lost. Please don't be angry with me. 1
don't want to go back!'
The pastor smiled. The Duke's devotion to Virginia
impressed him.

little Duke, laughing.
They galloped to the railway station.
'Have you seen a little girl on the platform?' Mr Otis
asked the stationrnaster.
He gave him a description of Virginia. Nobody knew
anything. The stationmaster informed the other stations on
the line.
Mr Otis bought a hat for the little Duke. Then they rode to
· Bexley, a village four miles away. Here there was a park where
a lot of gypsies went. Maybe Virginia was there. They talked to
the local policemen but they did not get any information. They
rode around the park but they did not see anything.
They retumed to Canterville Chase. They arrived at
about eleven o'clock. They were very tired and sad.
Washington and tbe twins were waiting for them. They
had lantems because the avenue was very dark. There was
no news39 of Virginia.
They had found the gypsies who were staying in the
park at Canterville Chase. Virginia was not with them. The
gypsies were worried about the girl, too. Four of them
decided to help find her.
They looked around all Canterville Chase but they
could not find her. Mr Otis and the boys were very
depressed. They walked to the house and the groom
followed with the horses.
The servants were in the hall. They were very afraid.
Mrs Otis was on the sofa. She was very worried. Mrs

Umney, the old housekeeper, was putting eau-de-cologne
on Mrs Otis's face.
'Eat something,' said Mr Otis.
He ordered dinner for everybody. It was a sad meal.
Nobody spoke. The twins were very quiet. They loved
their sister very much. After dinner Mr Otis spoke.
'Now everybody must go to bed. We can't do anything
more today. Tomorrow I'll telegraph Scotland Yard 40.
They' 11 send sorne detectives.'
They started to leave tbe dining room. Then they heard
the chimes of the clock. lt was midnight. The chimes
stopped. Suddenly there was a crash and a cry. There was
thunder and they could hear music. Then the wall at the top
of the staircase opened and Virginia appeared.
She was very pale. They all went to her. Her mother
took her in her arms. The Duke kissed her violently. The
twins started to dance.
'Good heavens, child, where have you been?' asked Mr
Otis angrily. 'She has been playing with us,' he thought.
'We have looked everywhere for you. Your mother has
been very frightened. You must never do anything like this
again,' continued her father.
'Darling4 1, you must never leave me again,' said Mrs
Otis. She kissed her and touched her hair.
'Papa42,' said Virginia quietly, 'I have been with the
ghost. The ghost is dead. You must come and see him. He
was a very bad person. He was sorry for what he did. He
gave me this box of beautiful jewels before he died.'
The family looked at her. They were very surprised.
Virginia was very serious. She tumed around and went

podemos hacer nada más. Mañana telegrafiaré a Scotland
Yard para que envíen algunos detectives.
Cuando empezaron a salir del comedor oyeron las cam-
panadas del reloj. Era medianoche. Cuando acabaron de
sonar las campanadas oyeron un crujido acompañado de
un grito. Sonó un trueno y se pudo oír una melodía. Enton-
ces se abrió la pared que se hallaba en lo alto de la escalera
y apareció Virginia.
Estaba muy pálida. Todos se precipitaron hacia ella. Su
madre Ja tomó en sus brazos y el duque la besó intensa-
mente. Los gemelos empezaron a bailar.
- ¡Santo cielo, hija mía!. ¿dónde te habías metido?-pre-
guntó míster Otis enfadado. "Ha estado jugando con noso-
tros", pensó-. Te hemos buscado por todas partes. Tu
madre ha estado muy asustada. No vuelvas a hacer nunca
algo así -continuó el padre.
-Querida, no nos volveremos a separar -dijo la señora
Otis besándola y acariciándole el cabello.
- Papá -dijo dulcemente Virginia-, he estado con el fan-
tasma. Ahora está muerto. Es preciso que vayan a verlo.
Fue muy malo, pero se arrepintió de lo que había hecho.
Antes de morir me dio esta caja de hermosas joyas.
Todos los miembros de la familia la miraron sorprendi-
dos. Virginia estaba muy seria. Se dio la vuelta y se dirigió

through the opening in the wall. They followed. They went
down a secret corridor. Finally, there was a big door.
Virginia touched it and it opened.
They were in a small room with a small window. In the
wall there was a ring with a skeleton chained to it. The
skeleton was on ·the floor. Near it there was an old water
jug, just out of reach.
Virginia began to pray next to the skeleton. The others
looked at the tragic scene. Suddenly they understood.
'Hey43 !' exclaimed one of the twins. He was looking
out of the window. 'The old almond tree has blossomed. I
can see the flowers in the moonlight.'
'He is at peace with God,' said Virginia. She got up. A
beautiful light illuminated her face.
'You are an angel,' cried the Duke and he put bis arms
around her.

Funeral for a Gbost
Four days after these curious incidents there was a
funeral. It started from Canterville Chase at about eleven
o' clock at night. There were eight horses pulling the hearse.
A purple cloth covered the coffin. It bad the Canterville
coat-of-arms on it. The servants walked next to the hearse.
They had torches. The procession was very impressive.

El funeral del fantasma
Cuatro días después de estos curiosos sucesos, se llevó
a cabo el funeral, que partió de Canterville Chase a eso de
las once de la noche. Ocho caballos tiraban del coche fúne-
bre. El ataúd estaba cubierto por un paño morado que lle-
vaba el escudo de armas de los Canterville. Los criados
marchaban al lado del ataúd llevando antorchas. Era una
procesión impresionante.

Lord Canterville was in the first carriage with little
Virginia. Mr Otis and his wife carne next. Then there was
Washington and the three boys. Mrs Umney was in the last
carriage.
The grave was in the cemetery next to an old yew tree.
The Reverend Augustus Dampier read the service in an
impressive manner.
When the service finished the servants put out44 their
torches. Then they put the coffin in the grave. Virginia put
sorne pink almond blossoms45 on the coffin. At the same
moment, the moon appeared. There were tears in her eyes.
They went back to the house in silence. · lágrimas. Volvieron a la casa en silencio.
The next morning Lord Canterville had an interview with
Mr. Otis about the jewels, the present the ghost had given to

very young and fortunately she isn't interested in these

are very valuable. Virginia can't have them. Maybe they're
necessary for the British aristocracy but not for austere
American Republicans. If possible, Virginia would like to
keep the box. It is a memento of your unhappy ancestor. It
is very old and maybe you don't need it. I'm surprised
Virginia is interested in medieval things. She was bom in
London; that could be the explanation.'
Lord Canterville listened to Mr Otis. He was touching
his moustache. Sometimes he smiled.

'My dear sir,' replied Lord Canterville, 'your
daughter did a great service for Sir Simon Canterville.
My family are very grateful. She is very courageous.
The jewels are clearly hers. If you give me the jewels,
Sir Simon will torment me terribly. The jewels are not
mentioned in any legal document. I didn't know about
them, they aren't mine. Virginia will like them when she
is older. You bought the house. Everything in it is
yours.'
Mr Otis was not happy with this decision but Lord
Canterville was very firm. The jewels belonged to
Virginia.
Virginia's Secret
In the spring of 1890 Virginia married the Duke of
Cheshire. Ata special party she met the Queen of England.
Everybody admired her jewels. Virginia and the Duke
were in love. Everybody was very happy except the old
Marchioness of Dumbleton. She wanted the Duke to
marry one of her daughters.
Mr Otis liked the Duke very much. However, he was
not happy about the negative influences of the British
aristocracy on a good American Republican. But, on
the day of the wedding he was the proudest man in
England.
After their honeymoon the Duke and Virginia, now the
Duchess, visited Canterville Chase. They decided to visit
Sir Simon's grave. His initials and the verse from the
library window were written on the tombstone. The
Duchess put sorne beautiful roses on the grave.

El secreto de Virginia

Then they walked to the ruins of an old abbey. Virginia
sat down next to a pillar. The Duke smoked a cigarette.
Suddenly the Duke took her hand.
' Virginia, a wife should have no secrets from her
husband,' said the Duke.
'Dear Cecil ! 1 have no secrets from you.'
'Yes, you have,' he answered, smiling. 'What happened
to you when you were locked up46 with the ghost?'
' I have never told anyone, Cecil,' said Virginia gravely.
' I know that, but tell me,' he insisted.
'Please don't ask me, Cecil. 1 can't tell you. Poor Sir
Simon! 1 owe him a lot. Don't laugh, Cecil! Now 1
understand what Life is and what Death signifies, and why
Love is stronger than both.'
The Duke got up and kissed his wife lovingly.
' You can have your secret ifl can have your heart, 'said
theDuke.
' You have always had that, Cecil,' she replied.
' Sorne day you will tell our children, won't you?'
Virginia blusbed.

Más tarde, fueron caminando hasta las ruinas de una
antigua abadía. Virginia se sentó al lado de una columna
mientras el duque se fumaba un cigarrillo. De pronto, el

marido -le dijo.
-Querido Cecil, yo no los tengo.
-Sí los tienes -respondió sonriendo-. ¿Qué te sucedió
mientras estuviste encerrada con el fantasma?
-Nunca se lo he contado a nadie -dijo Virginia grave-
mente.
-Ya lo sé, pero dímelo -insistió él.
-Te ruego que no me lo preguntes, Cecil, no te lo puedo
decir. ¡Pobre sir Simon! Le debo mucho. ¡No te rías, Cecil!
Ahora comprendo qué es la vida y qué significa la muerte,
y por qué el amor es más fuerte que ambas.
El duque se levantó y besó a su esposa con ternura.
-Puedes guardar tu secreto si yo poseo tu corazón
-dijo.
-Siempre lo tendrás, Cecil -replicó la chica.
-Se lo dirás algún día a nuestros hijos,¿verdad?
Virginia se ruborizó.
