EJERCICIO 1
Lea el texto detenidamente
Subraye os verbos que en él aparecen
Elabore un cuadro con cada verbo y su correspondiente equivalente en
castellano, así como el tiempo que se indica.
Ejemplo: He worked at the library the whole day
(Trabajó) simple past
Si por el contrario, erró en algunas de las repuestas, dé comienzo al estudio del material
propuesto para la presente unidad que sigue a continuación.
Las formas verbales que dan origen a los tiempos del verbo en inglés son:
Aquellas formas, tales como el “present participle” el “past” y “past participle” de los
verbos regulares, generalmente se omiten en los listados por formarse, el primero,
añadiendo la terminación “ING”, y los segundos, añadiendo la terminación “ED” a la forma
simple del verbo (infinitivo sin “TO”).
Se observará que los nombres que reciben estas formas se han mantenido en inglés,
pues en algunos casos no corresponden exactamente a lo que conocemos como
presente, pretérico, etc., en castellano.

TIEMPOS BÁSICOS
Entre las funciones que tienen los verbos está la de señalar el tiempo en
que una acción ocurre. En inglés hay cuatro tiempos básicos en la conjugación:
“present”, “past”, “future” y “conditional”. Estos tiempos, como veremos más
adelante se repiten en los diferentes grupos de tiempo que forman la conjugación.
EJERCICIO 3
En el siguiente ejercicio subraye los verbos y coloque en los espacios en blanco el
tiempo expresado por ellos, así mismo, dé sus correspondientes equivalentes en
castellano.

Lea el siguiente texto y realice el ejercicio que se le indica.
MAN AD GEOGRAPHY
If you examine (1) a population map, you will see (2) several densely populated
areas. You will find (3) other areas with very little population. What makes (4)
some places desirable to man? If you wanted to understand this, you would need
(5) to think about the necessities of man. What are these needs? First man needs

Realicemos ahora la siguiente actividad de manera que usted aplique la
información dada en el cuadro.

Cada uno de estos grupos incluye los tiempos básicos de que hemos hablado
“present”, “past”, “future” y “conditional”. A continuación veremos cómo estos
tiempos se organizan en los diferentes grupos y la manera de atribuirle sus
correspondientes equivalentes en castellano. Realicemos antes el siguiente
ejercicio para determinar su conocimiento previo sobre este punto.

13. Veamos ahora las oraciones del grupo 4. ¿Qué tiempos representan las
oraciones de este grupo?

16. ¿Cuántos tiempos comprende el grupo de “perfect progressive tenses”?
Menciónelos.
17. ¿Cómo se estructuran los tiempos del grupo de “perfect progressive tenses”?
progressive”. Estudiemos de cada grupo, los tiempos de mayor uso así como la
manera de atribuirle los correspondientes equivalentes en castellano. Este es un
aspecto muy importante de observan porque no siempre la forma usada en inglés
expresa los mismo del que se emplea en castellano. Comencemos.
SIMPLE PRESENT. Se usa para indicar acciones habituales, de ahí que los
“adverbios de frecuencia” sean comúnmente empleados en oraciones de este tipo.
Observe los ejemplos:
People in the United States always learn about what happens in their
communities by means of news media.
More tan two-thirds of all Americans get their national and intrnational
newes from televisión and radio evereday.
2. Los pronombres de las terceras personas del singular (he, she, it) usan la
misma forma simple a la cual se añade “s” o “es”. Ejemplos:
He Works in a laboratory.
She goes to Europe twice a year.
SIMPLE PAST. Ese tiempo se usa para indicar acciones que ocurrieron en un
tiempo determinado en el pasado. Al igual que las oraciones “simple present”
éstas pueden darse en:
a) Enunciativas
b) Interrogativas
c) Negativas
Los verbos regulares forma su “simple past” añadiendo al infinitivo sin “to”
(base form) la terminación “ed”.
Los verbos que no terminan en “ed” en el pasado son irregulares, de los
cuales hay que conocer sus diferentes formas, ya que como su nombre lo
indica forman su pasado de manera irregular.
Emplean DID al empezar una oración interrogativa y DID NOT entre el sujeto y
el verbo en la oración negativa, con todas las personas. El verbo viene en
“base form” (infinitivo sin “to”) Ejemplo:
o Did the students test the new instrument?
o The researcher did not write all the data
o Did she choose the most efficient procedure?

Este grupo se estructura con el presente, pasado, future y condicional del verbo
TO BE + el verbo principal ING. En cuanto a sus equivalencias en castellano es
de hacer notar que los “progressive tenses” no existente como tales en la
conjugación castellana, sino como la fase verbal ESTAR + GERUNDIO que
presenta las llamadas acciones durativas. Observe las correspondencias en las
siguientes oraciones.
PRESENT PROGRESSIVE
1. Scientists are developing a new economic commission to study the urgent
problem of food production.
PAST PROGRESSIVE
2. They were conducting the experiment while we were analyzing the data
(=(Ellos) REALIZABAN el experimento mientras nosotros ANALIZABAMOS los
datos).
Observe el “past progressive” tiene como equivalente en castellano:

1. The nurse was disinfecting the laboratory equipment when the surgeon arrived

Este grupo se estructura con el present, past, future y conditional del verbo TO
HAVE + el “past partiicple” del verbo principal. En cuanto a sus equivalentes
en castellano es de hacer notar que, los Perfect Tenses corresponden más o
menos a los tiempos compuestos en castellano. Sin embargo, observen las

(=El investigador se dió cuenta de su error después que HUBO REVISADO
los resultados
b) I had JUST received a telephone call when he arrived.
(=ACABABA DE RECIBIR una llamada telefónica cuando él llegó)
c) I had been there FOR 10 minutes when the doctor showed up.
(=HACÍA diez minutes QUE ESTABA allí cuando el doctor se presentó)
PRESENT PERFECT
a) Cuando indica la realización de una acción en un tiempo indefinido en el
pasado, su equivalente es el antepresente
PAST PERFECT
Ejemplo:
He had just begun t oread when the telephone rang
(=(él) ACABABA DE EMPEZAR a leer cuando el teléfono sonó).
Ejemplos:
Next September second, Dr. Baker will have worked here FOR thirty years
(=El próximo 2 de septiembre el Dr. Baker HARÁ 30 años QUE TRABAJA aquí)

Este grupo se estructura con el presente, pasado, futuro y condicional del verbo
TO HAVA + el past participle del verbo TO BE (BEEN) + el verbo principal – ING.
En cuanto a sus equivalentes en castellano es de hacer notar que los “perfect
progressive tenses” no existen en la conjugación castellana como tales, Es
importante por lo tanto que observe en las siguientes oraciones la manera de
atribuirle los equivalentes.
b) Fred has been working on his radio set SINCE 2 o ‘clock in the afternoon.
b) She had been working as a secretary FOR two years when she was
promoted.
(=HACÍA dos años QUE TRABAJABA / QUE ESTABA TRABAJANDO como
secretaria cuando fue promovida.
