1- MATTERS OF IMPORTANCE IN HOUSE BUILDING
When you are building a house, you must study what are the necessities for the health and
happiness of these who are to live in the house. Shelter, cleanliness, dryness, abundance of
air, plenty of light, a place to dispose of sewage, without any danger to health, and a good
water supply are all matters of first importance.
SHELTER
Three essential features of a good house are a firm foundation, and strong walls to support a
well-made roof. A tile roof might be economical and suitable for hot climates; the old-
fashioned thatched or mud roof may be quite good enough. It can be necessary to use mud
or pressed bricks for walls in one area, in another stone or concrete walls may not be too
expensive. The foundations walls should be built that they will stand firmly and support the
walls and roof for many years.
Double walls whether made of wood, brick, stone, or concrete, make a building cooler in hot
weather and warmer in cold weather. In one country the builder must think of protection from
fierce sunlight; in another there may be heavy rainstorms and strong winds to test the quality
of his workmanship; in still another his problem may be deep falls of snow or intense cold.
But whatever the climate may be the house should be built of materials that will endure.
