Abstract
The presence of heavy metals and active pharmaceutical ingredients in wastewater irrigation systems is a concerning
problem. This work presents an analysis of the potential of wastewater bioremediation using granular activated charcoal
inoculated with microalga–cyanobacteria consortium (Desmodesemus maximus - Planktothrix pseudoagardhii) inside of a
fluidized bed photoreactor. The water quality was measured by the parameters BOD5, COD, N-NH4+, N-NO2-, N-NO3- y PO43-
; moreover, the remoting of paracetamol and ibuprofen as well as heavy metals (Cd, Cr, and Pb) from wastewater were
quantified. From the results, it can be inferred that activated charcoal inoculated with the consortium microalga –
cyanobacteria enhance removal of most water pollutants. The tests evidence that phycoremediation has the potential to be
applied as treatment of wastewater irrigation, reducing the mobility of heavy metals and active pharmaceutical ingredients to
crops without considerable changes in nitrogen and phosphorus concentration.
